Surprized no one mentioned Pirates of the Burning Sea.
If its as good as it looks imo it will be the closest to killing wow, but it wont. The success of Pirates of the Caribean movies has helped to make pirates very big in pop culture right now and apart from a few crappy free mmos there is no other mmo that directly competes with it.
Why ? Because it's silly to have a notion that a mature established game will be destroyed simply because of new UNTESTED games coming in the market. Remember WoW has over 9 million users worldwide as of this writing, even if the whole North American market were to NOT play WoW that would only be 2 million less players and they still have 7 million players from all over the world that still plays it. What ever you WoW haters would wish/fantasized for, WoW will be here to stay at least until WoW 2 or World of Starcraft/Diablo comes along.
lol. Its funny how a lot of people are saying that this MMO or that MMO will be the one when the truth is they think its a kewl game and probably gunna play it when its released. Its also rather funny to see the WoW fans deny it like the game cures cancer and that it will last forever. Most of the MMO's coming out are very kewl games, iv been following them for awhile like a lot of you have. But that doesnt mean any of them are going to challenge WoW. Im not a WoW fan, nor do i hate it. Iv played it for awhile and moved on. If any of these games are going to be the destruction of WoW its most likely going to be all of them combined. 2008 is going to see A LOT of MMO releases, the big ones being AoC and WAR. Now those two in my opinion will cause WoW to lose many, many subscribers but it will still be a strong game. But with the addition of games like Spellborn, PotBS, Darkfall, Huxley, and Tabula Rasa (just to name a few ) the game will start to hurt but still be a game played by the fans. Do i think WoW will be destroyed? No. Not in 2008. Not in 2009. 2010? Its very well possible. Now just because WoW wont be "destroyed" by any of these games doesnt mean it will still be the leading MMO. I have a strong feeling that WoW will lose its spotlight at the end of 2008 and one of these games will be the leader in subscriptions. But again this is all just my opinion.
something you gotta understand is that you dont need a game to be a WoW killer......simply if you get a game with a good base /pvp/quest system....PooF the number one competitor to the best most well rounded game made in a long long time<WoW>
WoW can co-exists with the new game that simply can hold hard core gamers/pvpers entertained for longer as WoW cant wich is why i believe it is so hated on websites like this simply because we are not content with the level of game programing/options/pvp options/WHATEVER of the games out there or guess what you wouldnt be on this site making posts like this...guess where your ip would be logged to.....the game.
Who cares if WoW fails i think at this point WoW will never be considered a failure and they have made a crapton of cash off it.......
Let it be around for years to come WHO CARES.
BTW soccer moms and jr high kids need games to play to so without WoW they would be all over the new games like AoC and WAR and frankly i dont want soccer moms kickin about goin afk every 10 mins to do dishes while in parties and that kinda crap in the few promising games comming out and why would you? <no offence to any jr high soccer moms > or even jr high kids and or soccer moms
Hello Kitty Online Adventure, or whatever else happens to be as mind numbingly simple to play as WoW is. Who knows, maybe a new version of MSN messenger will come out where you level by spending time online and swoop away the WoW fanbase.
There won't be a WoW killer. WoW is currently too popular to suddenly lose a significant amount of their players. WoW might not gain subscribers as fast and only over time will they have a decline in subscribers. And this won't happen over a short course of 1 year.
No I'm not, but since that post was directly after mine and you don't seem to have a habit of quoting the person who you are talking to then it's hard for me to tell whether or not it was directed at me.
Age of Conan looks great, and Tabula Rasa should be interesting.
I played WOW during the beta, and tried it again recently at the behest of a friend, but I just don't get it. Nothing about World of Warcraft makes me want to play it. It's just boring and dull, the same old stuff over and over, just like any other fantasy MMORPG. It's not a bad game, there just isn't anything exceptional about it at all. The auction house is a lot more conveniant than comparable systems in other games, but that's about the only thing I'd like to see from WoW in other games. It'd be great if older games could implement such a system, as it might make them a lot more accessible to some people.
And personally I do kind of wish WoW would die a bit. Not only has it sapped population from other games, but frankly I'm just sick of hearing about it, whether it's here on the internet or from unhealthily obsessed friends...
Easy. When Blizzard decides to make a Starcraft MMO since it is actually more popular than Warcraft I believe. So how about we quit making these pointless polls or even worry about it. Who really cares if/when anything takes out WoW's player base? Play what you enjoy and let others play what they enjoy. It's as simple as that. It's juvenile to worry about this.
Time will kill WoW just like it bleeds all the life out of every game. The graphics are already old and with the new generation of graphics cards Wow will fade away to a nominal existance just like all the great games have. UO is still around, but realistically it is dead. EQ is still there, but it is in hospice. Asheron's Call (The best MMORPG to date) still has a heart beat, but it is so faint you need to get the stethocope in just the right spot to hear it. Wow has already past middle age and is in decline. It will muddle through its later years into its twilight and finally give up the ghost.
Personally I am looking forward to Star Trek Online... I have had it with trolls and orges and all that stuff in the dirty, smoke choked, thatched roof worlds.
I want to be clean, in a bright shiney new uniform, learning how to "Give the Captain More Power!" Anything, anything at all that comes out over the next few years will interest me that doesn't have a sword in it.
Have fun

But if the while I think on thee, dear friend, All losses are restor'd, and sorrows end.

I think WAR will cost WOW greatly, but it will still sit on the throne for at least until 2009/2010.
WOW is a decend game, but its 100% overhyped and overvalued.

I vote for fallen earth and huxley, I dont even see why tabula rasa is on the list since it went WoW style... its bound to fail.
NONE OF THE ABOVE

The re-released Vanguard.
(ducking and hoping that the Vanbois pick up the fight, so I can watch the fireworks.)
I dont think theres any vanbois left...
vanguard sucked imho. wow is still great, thinking AoC will be also.

WoW is where old gamers go to retire
AION
WoW's got a good 5 years left in it. Probably 10.
No idea what will be the next bestseller after WoW.
I'm not excited by any in your list.
I'll try Huxley, and run through any WoW expansion. Other than that I'm not planning on any further MMO action for the forseable future.
Where is the button for None ? with a next expansion coming WOW will continue to rule the MMO world ...
WoW will die as soon as developers stop trying to clone it and start innovating....however....that could be 5 years down the road.

YES!!
(thats directed at the first part)
When to the sessions of sweet silent thought
summon up remembrance of things past,
sigh the lack of many a thing I sought,
And with old woes new wail my dear time's waste:
Then can I drown an eye, unus'd to flow,
For precious friends hid in death's dateless night,
And weep afresh love's long since cancell'd woe,
And moan th' expense of many a vanish'd sight;
Then can I grieve at grievances foregone,
And heavily from woe to woe tell o'er
The sad account of fore-bemoaned moan,
Which I new pay as if not paid before.
But if the while I think on thee, dear friend,
All losses are restor'd, and sorrows end.
who really cares?
