Just wanted to state you on the whole WOW will never die.

Im not anti wow, just felt like saying it will prolly in its 6th year of running.

Everquest is over, and its been about 7 years, its still ther, they still make new things, but its dying.

You cant say its not gonna die, because it will.

PS - All mammals have nipples.

    Get over it already.

I just reinstalled World of Warcraft as I am thinking about playing it with a friend who hasn't played it much yet.  I've been playing Tabula Rasa and the first thing I noticed was how much fast Tabula Rasa's combat is it comparison.  I felt like I was going in slow motion playing WoW.  I'm not sure if I can go back to playing it again.

     In re: baseline...

at least for the time being; I believe that the newest games won't so much steal WoW's audience as they will appeal to players who for whichever reason are unsatisfied with Wow & the all-similar games...

they say history repeats; so I will risk repeating myself as well:

There was a situation for quite a while where D&D was THE RPG. it was the "common" language of games everyone had heard of; everyone had played; and almost always not only the FIRST they had played but the only one that in agiven group of people; Everyone had played (as I said; the common..)

TSR (D&D's original company) had the marketing and distribution...

But after playing D&D many players moved ON if they wanted a game that was more ______. There were loyalists of course but IN GENERAL mostly gamers would grow tired of D&D's foibles and find a game that offered something new or better.

In the 80's as TSR changed hands; they made a decision to try to expand their market by appealling to a larger demographic - a younger one(even moreso than in the "basic"set era)...The cartoon, new settings, the IMO mediocre and childish books...

A market reaction was other companies went after niches - the "mature" gamer niche in particular comes to mind...(white wolf stands out)...

AS I SEE IT... WoW is now that giant.  hell; i suspect most WoW players never even played D&D- but the point is; you either have to make a new market or compete.

since out-WoWing wow probably isn't feasible; they have to bring something new to the table - either in mechanics/gameplay or in content.

i suppose all this goes without saying - but to put a point on it; i beleieve we have echoed that previous situation where THE game is a sort of "gateway game" and other games will have to give jaded players a REASON to move on.

Just wait for the WoW movie and cartoon...

here is whats is ACTUALLY going on, WoW has what, 9 million + players? with that said, i bet only about 2 million of them have ever played another mmo, and only half of those have actually played a good mmo.  The reason why WoW does so good is because most the players are complete and utter noobs(no offense, its just fact, you may in fact be one of the ones who actually isnt a noob). Its like this, why does everyone at ur school wear an abercrombie shirt? or a hurley shirt? or the such? its simple, because that brand of clothing is plastered all over hollywood, tv, and magazines and is considered the "hype". WoW is also considered a "hype" as it is plastered all of websites, tv, and magazines, which is why so many people play it. Another way of looking at it is like this. You know people that play this game called WoW, you yourself have never played video games that much, you decide to try out this game named WoW. You decide it is fun and get all of ur friends to start playing it, THAT is how WoW got to be so big. I guess you could say that WoW is more for the person who really doesnt care about video games or wasting 15 bucks a month. For all of us that DO care about what the 15 bucks is going to, we prefer the more in depth games. ATM im playing lotro, but thats only cause i am lying in wait for WARHAMMER to come out. Not only do i believe that it will crush lotro(cause i know a LOT of ppl on that game that are waiting for WAR, and were UTTERLY sick of the crapiness of WoW) but i believe that it will SUBSTANTIALLY reduce the amount of players that play WoW, cause i believe that its going to become the new  "hype". I know im jumping from topic to topic, but i hope you get the gist of what i am trying to get at.

you're quite right. i played UO and AO before i got into SWG. but SWG was really my first MMO that i sunk time (and money) into that i loved. i befriended quite a few that i still talk to today. many fond memories were built around the SWG of old. after they got mounts and vehicles, but way before the CU. to me, SWG was my "first".

UO and AO don't make it on that list since i got into both due to ex boyfriends of mine.

i will forever compare other MMOs to SWG of old.

that being said, and trying to get back on topic, i don't feel any of the games listed will bump WoW out of the running. it's easy to get into and no steep learning curves. so i'm not entirely certain WoW will be "destroyed" instead it will just fade with time.

If by destroyed you mean player numbers, then nothing will overtake WoW in those terms next year unfortunately.

3 years on and WoW is still riding a hype wave LoL.

Listen... advertising (of which I see very little BTW) will get people to try the game.. but the game will make them stay and pay month after month.. if WoW was as crap as you say it then it would have a similar sub base as other MMOs such as EQ2 and EvE.

Hate WoW all you like but trying to take away its acheivements by saying only noobs "like you have the right to judge" play makes you look simple and jaded.

WoW has 8-9 million subs... FACT, other MMO's just dream of such numbers, and for those MMO's to get such numbers they need to produce a better game and not tailor the game to elites such as you.

WAR might indeed takes WoWs thunder... but we'll have to wait and see. the PvP vids i have seen are all too much "stand still my turn to hit you.. 5 secs.. wham... ok my turn... 4 secs... miss.... my go... 5 sec ..ouch!"

Umm... It would probably be more along the lines of 1-2 seconds between hits. You know, because a fight only lasts like 25 - 50 seconds on average (roughly). Oh and by the way, as a WoW supporter, that statement "makes you look simple and jaded" what with the hypocrisy and all.

RoFL... im 27 years old ofc i have played DaOC, as well as EQ1/2, AC, EvE etc.. does that help? I was playing MMO's while you we're still wetting the bed

    EQ1 = 1.5 year (it was new)

EQ2 = 1 hour LOL (PC not up to the task)

AC = 1 month (fun but not worth a sub)

    AO = 1 year (lasers)

DDO = 3 months (fun for a while but - not enough to warrant a sub)

DaOC = 1 week (slow game play - no story)

EvE = 2 hours (tutorial sent me too sleep)

GW = 6 months (PvP got old after a while - cookie cutter classes dispite the number of skills)

LoTRO = 1 month (beta - WoW with LOTRO skin)

WoW = 2.5 years (by far the best MMO  IMHO)

Now have I passed your test? can I now post on this forum?

No game will unseat WoW, period. The only thing that will kill it is time as it does to all games. Gameloading, Torak and numerous others have hit the nail pretty much on the head as far as WoW goes. The majority of WoW players will most likely never play another MMO. Why you ask? Because in their minds they are not playing an MMO, they are playing multi-player Warcraft. These players that WoW brought into this genre are not MMO fans, they are Blizzard and Warcraft fans. The only thing that might have a chance of grabbing some of these people out of WoW is a Starcraft or Diablo MMO because they are also Blizzard IPs. I'm just hoping that it won't take too much longer for other MMO companies to realize that the WoW player base is a brass ring that they simply will never be able to reach. Only after this happens will they start making MMOs for MMO fans again and the evolution of the genre will continue.

you could have the best and greatest game, the best graphics and the best gameplay, etc but these don't even compare to the power of a well known name brand.

There is one very powerful tool World of Warcraft has, and it's in its title, that tool is the word Warcraft

Warcraft is the PERFECT series to base an mmorpg off of because it's fans are all PC users, not just PC users, but GAMERS!.

LOTR, Starwars, Harry Potter, Warhammer and pretty much everything else I can think of has TONS, and I mean TONS of fans, but most of their fans read books, play table top games or use another medium that isn't based on the computer. Their fans are not computer users.

The only thing that will topple WoW is WoW2

i'm guessing that's just poor wording on your part, but there are a lot of computer users that are into the other things you've mentioned.

i enjoy Star Wars, Harry Potter, LOTR and Warhammer. i read a lot and dork out with table top gaming (Cyberpunk) on a monthly basis. i'm also a social individual that enjoys a good party (and not the kind in an MMO. :P) this doesn't mean that i'm not a computer user, because i am a gamer and avid computer user on top of everything else.

i could go on, but i'd start to sound like a personal ad in a newspaper. ;P

So far 2008 will be a good year for MMO's, with a couple of interesting titles coming out.  But no matter what, WoW will keep going.  WoW is a very solid game, with lots of content to keep it running for years.  It definitely won't be destroyed by anything coming out.

PC gaming is already a niche market, but I have no doubt there are fans of series such as harry potter, war hammer or any other major series such as yourself that have computers capable of modern gaming. It's just I doubt there is anywhere near enough of these fans to come even close to unseating WoW.

Maybe they could get some fans of these series on consoles, they're decently priced. Even then I strongly doubt they'd crack the 500k mark with any other IP.

Although Star Wars managed to get 300k subs with an unfinished game, maybe they could get a mil with a complete one...

I registered just to talk in this thread. I was delighted to see that Harry Potter was *already* brought up and would like to refute the notion that there are not enough fans to support a great MMORPG for it. That particular fanbase is VERY reliant and consistently active on the internet. Its where a large percentage of them became attracted to the series, and most importantly where they all went in between books and afterwards.

The last book came out this year ( I didn't like it personally), and fans are desperate for SOMETHING Harry Potter related that will provide them with the experience they had with the books. The only thing that will ever do that besides another book is an MMORPG. Think about it, a large part of the experience was going online and talking about the world. The laws, abilties, and what would happen next. It is like the money is just literally sitting there waiting for someone to pick it up.

Universal Studios is already cashing in on their desperation, they are building a Harry Potter theme park/island. WB can and does put whatever quality movie based on Harry Potter out because fans will buy it ( much to my dismay). So yeah, I think that a MMORPG based on Harry Potter would be one hell of a contender in the MMORPG market.

edit: Oh and no, I am not just some sort of crazy fangirl talking out of her behind. I used to be until the last book, which I was very angry about. However I would just like to see ONE really good MMORPG to actually come out besides WoW, and a HP MMO would be developed by EA.

A Harry Potter MMO would only work if it has FFA pvp.  Well, maybe not, but man that would be fun to make some ugly toothless wizard kid and just beat the shit outa some Harry Potter looking kids.

WHy do people think WoW will be the one that dies, if anything LOTRO and EQ2 will die way before WoW dies. 2008 will be the nail in the coffin for EQ2

This is another reason why I think a Harry Potter mmorpg would do well against the likes of WoW and EQ2, the PvE and PvP is already there in the world. Unlike D@D and most notably LotRo, Harry Potter can make the transition to such a virtual world without losing much of the literary one. The literary one does not have a very solid law of what magic can and can't (this is what made me dislike the last book) do so the fans would not have anything to complain about.

The happy atmosphere, fantasy setting, and built in fan base make it alike but different enough from WoW to attract players.

    The Chronicles of spellborn

Just because its different, and has a whole other feeling then all previously released games, its not a EQ or WoW clone but its own game.

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
