I do not feel that Darkfall is vaporware using the definition that the game basically does not exist in any form - I think it is being actively developed. I do feel, however, that people are going to be disappointed if they believe in this game and what it claims it will deliver. Forget about beta, have they ever even let people (like press) play a demo? Even something simple, like swinging a sword, killing an enemy, and calling it a day? As far as I know, no. This is a major problem when it comes to people taking your product seriously. The developer has massive plans, and they sure do sound grand, but there has been no proof that any of this exists, at all. Some screenshots and short movies are something, but not enough to constitute proof, especially after such a long development cycle. The developer also has never released anything previously, and certainly not an MMOG, and even more certainly not a AAA MMORPG. This is a cause for concern - people expect them to succeed on a grand scale with absolutely no proven track record. After 6+ years of development they have shown nothing that indicates they have finished even 1/100 of what the game is supposed to be. Naval battles, totally free PvP, epic warfare...that is a lot to promise when you cannot even show something basic. Anyway, I am glad this game is exciting people, and I genuinely do hope it delivers everything it claims and is a smashing success - it sounds like a game I'd enjoy. However, I doubt this will happen and must marvel at the people who firmly believe it will. There is a fine line between faith and being hopelessly gullible, and I think the hardcore Darkfall believers fall into the latter category. Then again, I suppose we all want something to believe in, and after so many MMORPG disappointments, grasping at an impossible dream might make sense. Unfortunately, I think this will end in a nightmarish flop, if it even comes to market at all, something I doubt considering no publisher is yet secured.
Actually yes, they have let various people play a demo. If you read up on the developer updates, they even have the Readme posted online that describes the demo they have let various news groups / moderators / testers play.
I'm sure if you do your research you will even find sites that posted interviews with DF devs that got to play the demo.
And I don't know what you mean show something basic....there are enough videos/pics to show the game functions. I just don't think a lot of people research DF before posting, which seems to be the problem here and with other posters in this thread.
Actually according to one of the mods over on the DF forums they have publishing they are just trying to find the right host for the game to go ahead with beta. They are saying that to beta properly the server side should be running on the finalized hardware which makes sense. They just haven't found one with the Bandwidth/services that would best support the game and the expected traffic it will produce. I personally think that they are looking at world wide distribution so this could mean servers located in several countries which would not be easy to find based on the fact that this is a MMO and not just a page selling cook books or something like that. This means that beta may be closer than everyone suspects it will be.

It is indeed a healthy attitude towards any games including AoC, WAR, TR etc. I'm here to support skillbased, sand box games. If it's vaporware, fine...perchance some other developers sit up and take notice.

Also from what is shown they've tried their best to stay true to the community and so what if they were wrong they are only human. Does it make AoC devs liars because they pushed back development? Does it make ANY development team a liar if they are wrong about a date? NO. While there is a possibility that they have lied it seems to me more likely that they realized how incomplete their game was and continued developing.
Continually adding content and at the same time fixing bugs while ALSO trying to support beta players AND trying to fund themselves through some extra work(because beta's dont bring in money) is an extremely hard balance to maintain which is something that you dont seem to understand. Of course there other problems that can be added I'm sure such as server problems, ect.
If i was in that position i would to decide to post-pone beta too.

In 2005, they said the game was ready for beta, and beta was going to start immediately. That was a lie. There is no other way to describe it.
When a game is ready for beta it does not mean its complete and at the time the game WAS NOT complete but they decided that it was best for them to wait till the have more in the game which is something i consider a smart move.
