Well let see you have your opinion which is in no way based in reality (VG a good game? The company went under in less then 6 months and had 5 years and 30+ million dollars to get it right.)
Well actually under those curcuimstances one could without hesitation say that player of VG actually think it is a good game. On the other as the OP asks, LOTRO playerbase where is that at? You see one after one seeking comnfirmation that they have chosen the game they like, It have been from 4million subscribers to 800k subribers and so forth.
You have seen post directly stating look at this good review now I now I have chosen the right game to play.
So what is it do people play LOTRO because of the famous IP. Do people let it go because it actually is not that good of a game in the end but it lives because of the IP.
yes one of the main points of this thread is endgame. Along with all the other junk I stated in the beginning of the post.
When it boils down to release, Vanguard beat LOTRO because Vanguard released a more grand, open next gen game, sadly doing something like this causes a lot of bugs, but when you look at the overall scale of vanguard, it blows LOTRO out of the water.
I was waiting for LOTRO, and actually I hated VG because it replaced Mythica.
LOTRO 7 classes, new skills end at the 40's in lvl, no real challenge, crafting is trash, economy is trash, raids are way too easy, replay sucks because only 4 starting zones and 4 races, which all goes together towards the 20s. and there are still tons of bugs (however, not nearly as much as Vanguards...why? because the word is so small and linear) . But LOTRO has Vanguard on pvp.
Vanguard has 15 classes, and offhand I think like 20 races? (sry if im wrong on race number) way more customization on races. you get about 10-15 new skills just for lvl 50 alone, more of a challenge, 5x better mounts, boats, way better housing and huge awesome guild halls. High level dungeons spanning across the three continents and a new gigantic raid coming soon. (on test they said the raid held 4 full raids all at the same time) and tons of unexplored content and hidden areas. Tons of starting zones and main citys (as compared to LOTRO's 4 starting zones, and like 2-3 "major" cities...that are quite small) Graphics and way more sharp and crisp. overall enviornment beats LOTRO's (although LOTROs is very nice). I could go on and on about diplomacy and how its going to be furthur implemented, or how the crafting allows people to create really amazing and unique items....
What does the scale of the world have to do with any of your points? you keep bringing it up as if its your keystone arguement.
LOTRO has tons of bugs? care to be specific? because no, frankly, it doesn't.
For starters, LOTRO only has 1/10 of the world currently available ingame, so no, Vanguard does not have anywhere near the expansive world that LOTRO will eventually have available.
LOTRO had one of, if not the, cleanest launches in the history of mmorpg's.
LOTRO has provided its customers with large, well developed content updates on a fairly regular basis, what has Vanguard given its customers since release (other than the obvious pain and suffering)?
LOTRO has the group game nailed shut, it couldn't be better, and the PvP Area limitations make random griefing a thing of the past. However, Vanguard, is a game known for PvP griefers that prey on low level characters due to lack of competition because of the drastically low population (it has been this way since release, to this day you can still find youtube vids of players that think they're awesome because they can one shot undergeared/underleveled noobs at a respawn point).
LOTRO provides a great crafting system, that is extremely beneficial to the players, and the gear crafted by it is extremely competitive with dungeon drops (if not better in alot of cases). Explain how Vanguards system is superior please?
If by "open" and "grand" you mean, large and underpopulated, with ridiculous travel times and a proposterously bad system for starting areas, then you are certainly dead on.
I won't even dare to touch on Character Customisation in VG because its just that bad, they don't even have displayable helmets yet ffs. SOE is still busy trying to clean up Sigil's mess, and will be for quite some time, until then the game has promise and potential, but is nowhere near as competitive as LOTRO for a spot among the markets top games.
I could go on and on about why LOTRO is vastly superior to Vanguard in every way, shape and form, but I'd be here for hours and I think my point has been proven with my above statements.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I can see your epitaph now, on the day you expire. It will read "Wasted Potential". ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
LOTRO is polished, beautiful, has depth etc - but everytime I play it - it feels like a really bad version of WoW. I dont think you can consider a game a success if after a few months your player base starts leaving in droves.
Vanguard on the other hand was a game with a lot of potential that was pretty much a turd on release. Players were leaving in droves during the beta.
What will determine which of these games will or even can become a long term success will be how easily these companies can lure back customers when new releases and updates come out. I know SOE is planning a re-release of Vanguard now that its actually semi-stable. There are some amazing things about Vanguard and it would be a shame to see it die prematurely.
I dont now what to say about LOTRO - faster releases? more endgame? more to do???? Or maybe just turn off your acct, wait for a new release, turn it on, play it for a couple months, and then turn it back off.
I am a casual gamer. I only have a coupe of hours two evenings a week to play. LOTRO is great game for me.
The following are reasons why I like it:
1) Lots of content for small groups an solo players. Even endgame you can always find things to do with people online. No waiting 4 hours to get a raid group together like some other MMOs.
2) Content added regularly. New content is added every couple of months. One thing I particularly appreciate is that they add low level content as well as endgame content. That means you can keep your high level toon and do new things, or alternatively, if you are creating a new character, you get a lot of new quests so you do not have to do all the same ones you previously did.
3) Story. The stroy is very entertaining. I find it good to have a story line running through the game. Some people like a huge vanguard style world with no real story- just heaps of quests. But I prefer a story that unfolds and I can be a part of. I enjoy the story unfolding as they release more and more content.
4) Mature players. Boy is their a difference in playing an MMO with mature people. People are always friendly to help with questing. Regional chat is not filled with immature drivel.
5) Many more reasons why I enjoy the game, but I am at work and must run.
So in response to the original post, I do not agree that LOTRO is a bigger failure than Vanguard. I enjoy it, the people I meet online enjoy it. We have a great time playing it. Thats my opinion and you are entitled to your own.

Vanguard was and is the biggest pile of steaming crap ive played in a long time.I hope it takes its rightful place alongside matrix online and auto assault in the MMO hall of shame.
I do feel bad for the OP. He really likes Vanguard and has misdirected anger at LoTRO because it didn't flop the way that Vanguard did. I hope the game does make a turnaround and the game gets better. MMO history is not kind to games that do not launch well. EQ2 is probably the only sucess story I can think of and luckily that is an SOE game that is working on Vanguard now.
Well it is good to see you finally put some examples to your often changed point in this thread.
What I will say to you is that Vanguard is not a next gen game. Nothing about it is next generation. The game doesn't even have anti alias so everything has a jagged look to it. The combat is standard fare. Quests are the basic kill X and deliver. Housing, boats and flying mounts have been in many games already. Even the crafting has been seen before in several games. There are a few great ideas through out the game and it does have potential to be fun for former EQ players, but it is nothing next gen. If anything Vanguard is just a EQ2 clone.
Lotro has a slightly superior skill system than Vanguard in my opinion. When you get new skills they are something fresh and new and it isn't just a new skill here and there to spice up getting 12 versions of fireball or slash for 50 levels. Plus the way you can slot skills with traits and such adds more depth. It is a nice twist on most MMOs.
I do love the Vanguard classes even if there is some imbalance sprinkled around, but there is nothing wrong with the LOTRO classes. They are all diverse with different skill sets and functions. It is every bit as good as VG only not as many classes. All of them can solo effectively too as the game seems balanced overall.
I prefer large explorable worlds like you seem to also, but Vanguard was barren. Who cares if the world is gigantic if there isn't anything in it for large areas. That is just wasted resources.
The end point is while LOTRO is introducing content, story lines, zones and quests. Turbine is advancing the game and expanding already. Vanguard is firing developers and still struggling with fundamental game issues like basic content and performance. Just because LOTRO doesn't appeal to our inner EQ child doesn't make it a failure. The odds of us ever seeing another EQ style "hardcore" game are slim to none and you can thank Vanguard for pretty much sealing that deal.
yeah but there are some who agree with me...I must admit I did play LOTRO all the way through and enjoyed aspects of the game. I think a big thing about my feelings for lotro is the lack of depth like I wanted.
oh well I do hope this post has gotten VG some deserved attention, for the good thing about it.
since new patch my FPS has gone up, and my alienware is three years old. Playing it on high graphics without too much lag. Still plenty of bugs there though, I think at the end of update 3 it should improve more.
That is the major problem of your post. You think you are doing good trying to attract people to Vanguard by tearing down LOTRO. The truth is the MMO industry need more quality launches like turbine did with lotro and less like vanguard.
If you feel that you need to market for SOE then by all means make a post about what you like about the game. Don't trash LOTRO and make accusations that it was rushed and incomplete because it is not your style of game.
Vanguard doesn't DESERVE anything. In fact it needs to go a very long way to PROVE that it should be given a second chance.

Agree. IF you think VG is good tell us how good. We need not agree with you, but that is the whole point of MMORPG.com. We come to discuss exchange information and views and go back to our own games, or try our your new game.
By bashing Lotro without justification, you simply make yourself looks bad, and destroys all chance you have in gaining faith in what you are saying. Adding to this, your brilliant title makes you look like a typical troll.
VG might have a lot of potential at start, but as it stands now, VG is struggling for survival financially, and struggling for a bug free functional core. Lotro is selling well, with lots of funds to keep rolling out free new content. SoE is trying to fix an endless list of bugs and missing features, Turbine is busy delivering new content, with 90% of the middle map still available for new release. As it stands now, Lotro is flying and VG is drowning.
As for your open world argument, that was about the only feature of VG that works. You have a big world to run around, with no one to talk to except a few NPCs which are rooted to the ground. Apart from beasts to grind for xp, there is nothing in the vast world to seriously enjoy. Middle earth is really too small, but at least there is a lore to follow, with mobs and quests that tunes in with the chapters and books. What lore does VG offer? Last time I checked, the lore chapter are not yet complete.
Last but possibly most important of all, Lotro makes me happy when I log on, and when I finish my Lotro tour I have blissful memories. What about VG? Endless frustration and anger. I do not pay for a box and and then monthly only to stare at a huge potential delivered in a fiasco. I do not care if VG will beat all other games 40 years from now. When I pay, I want a decent service now, and right NOW, VG does not meet that minimum expectation.
Vanguard is the failure. The company was dissolved and it's staff terminated.
Lord of the Rings Online is the second most successful American MMO on the market.
The OP can only build up the failure of Vanguard by trying to tare down LotRO. Doing this sort of thing in the LotRO forum is nothing but trolling for a flame war.
*Childish.
*I can say childish because I have children of my own that are older than the OP, and I've seen this type of behavior before.

Comparing WoW to LOTRO? It's as much a WoW clone as EQ2 and the rest of them.

Blah blah, actually the LOTRO community has only increased since launch, steadily I might add. www.mmogdata.com
WoW wasn't the first MMORPG, it's just the one with the largest base, thats why so many people compare things to it. If you look hard enough you can compare anything to WoW. If you really look deeply though you'll see WoW took just as much stuff from the trendsetters before them, such as EQ1. People can compare however they want, just understand that these games have become progressively LESS variant in gameplay since the day WoW launched.

Yeah but uh, how was it with these server queues some months back are they still there. Have Turbine added any servers yet. If not why don't they do that with a game that has server queues and an increasing population?
... But LOTRO is less deep, less size, less classes, races, customization..the list goes on! ...
But LOTRO is less deep, less size, less classes, races, customization..the list goes on!
Time to get out of the tutorial area then? Especially the customization is quite huge in LotRO (deeds and traits).
And you said you are a Tolkien fan.. but you want more races? Good luck finding more races then!
Less size?... I Don't know what kidn of size you mean, but the world of LotRO is huge, and it keeps on getting bigger, and i think you should imagine it going to Mordor. (will take a while if they keep on doing it at this speed, but they'll get there... hopefully)
I'm looking forward on reading the rest of your list, since this part really amused me!

Vanguard needed to much time to get something done,
and Lotro was more of a themepark & less imersiv.
If people would ask me today what to start
i would tell em to try vanguard cause it just gives you more interesting stuff for the bugs..LOTRO
is the handygame in comparison. Its good its fun
but its simple.
edit.: oh an yes i dont regret my Lotro lifetime sup
but also at lvl 35 youll run out of solo quests

disappointed in LOTRO's endgame and overall content. Very impressed by Vanguards

Care to provide a link where it states that LOTRO's playerbase is leaving in droves?
Most people will post when they leave a game, but that has nothing to do with how many people are still playing it.

I have one thing to say: PC game of the year!!!!! :P

Yeah but uh, how was it with these server queues some months back are they still there. Have Turbine added any servers yet. If not why don't they do that with a game that has server queues and an increasing population?
I'm so broke. I can't even pay attention.
"You have the right not to be killed"
You know it, the best way to realize your dreams is waking up and start moving, never lose hope and always keep up.
Vanguard is just more fascinating for me
and i played both to lvl 30..strange
at that time i left both games for eq2.
