Pre 11-15-2005 I was KatanOmega of Corbantis.  I was a Swordsman to be feared.  Many Imperials fell to my Power Hammer.  Post 11-15-2005 I was just another Bounty Hunter in the crowd.  Thats what SOE didn't understand and never will.  Before the NGE our toons were extensions of ourselves, built from scratch to be our vessels in a wide open digital world.  After the NGE, we were just clones.

Veterans, Gamers, members of the Correspondent program: yesterday, November 15th, 2005 - a date which will live in infamy - the MMORPG Star Wars Galaxies was suddenly and deliberately attacked by development and marketing forces of the Empire of SOE.

The playerbase was at peace with that company, and, at the solicitation of SOE, was still in conversation with its developers and its management looking toward the maintenance of peace in the game. Indeed, one hour after SOE moderators had commenced bombing in the offical forums, the SOE Ambassador to the playerbase and his colleagues delivered to the community a formal reply to a recent rumor of changes. And while this reply stated that it seemed useless to continue the existing diplomatic negotiations, it contained no threat or hint of war or of armed attack.

It will be recorded that the distance of the NGE from the release of ToOW makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the SOE management has deliberately sought to deceive the playerbase by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the core game has caused severe damage to players spirits and subscription numbers. I regret to tell you that very many Veterans lives have been lost. In addition players accomplishments have been reported torpedoed on the servers between Ahazi and Wanderhome.

Yesterday the SOE management also launched an attack against Tatooine and Lok.

Last night SOE forces attacked Naboo and Rori.

Last night SOE forces attacked Corellia and Talus

Last night SOE forces attacked Dantooine and Kashyyyk.

Last night SOE attacked Dathomir and Yavin.

And this morning SOE attacked Endor and Mustafar.

SOE has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Galaxy. The facts of yesterday and today speak for themselves. The players of Star Wars Galaxies have already formed their opinions and well understand the implications to the very life and safety of our beloved game.

As a fellow Veteran, I have directed that all measures be taken for our defense.

But always will our entire community remember the character of the onslaught against us. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the Galaxies Veterans in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory.

I believe that I interpret the will of the Veterans and of the playerbase when I assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make it very certain that this form of treachery shall never again endanger us.

Hostilities exist. There is no blinking at the fact that our community, our game and our accomplishments are in grave danger.

With confidence in our Vocal Majority - with the unbounding determination of our Veterans - we will gain the inevitable triumph - so help us God.

I ask that the SWG community declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by SOE on Tuesday, November 15th, 2005, a state of war has existed between the players of SWG and the SOE Empire.

And I'm willing to bet that 100% of those that are crying for the Pre-CU to come back were the ones that would flood the SWG forums with whines on how broken the game was in the Pre-CU days.  It's time to take off those rose tinted glasses because Pre-CU was a broken mess.

Anyone remember losing items when crossing zone lines?  Rubber banding when just trying to travel across a planet?  Or the myriad of broken classes or broken quests?  Yeah, lets bring back the buggy, broken POS that was Pre-CU.

A lot of what you're saying is STILL in SWG right now. Apparently you don't understand what it is the vets want. The vets wanted Pre CU to be FIXED!! not ripped apart and turned into the NGE, which is a joke by comparison.

I guess what you don't realize is that the reason why they did the NGE was because they couldn't fix the Pre-CU game.   They would fix one thing and it would cause other things to break.  They couldn't add new things because it would break the game, etc.  Pre-CU SWG was an unfixable POS.  Take off those rose tinted glasses, it's about time you and the others did.

    Fuhyo

    You are sadley misinformed.

They did have a fix for it. The had a balance system in process. It was called the CURB, they had been working on it for months before they scrapped it for the CU. They could have made the game much better and more stable, HOWEVER, they saw the money WoW was pulling in and decided that their game wasnt easy enough to get new players into. Hence the NGE came about. Dont believe me? Read some of the interviews with Smed and the Dev crew...they have all said it or made reference to it. Get your facts straight before you start trying to discredit other people.

Yes, someone is misinformed and it's not me.

The reason why CURB was dumped for the most part (the combat upgrade was Phase I of CURB) was that it would have been too costly and it wouldn't have really fixed anything without basically re-wrting the game from scratch.  NGE was the less costly option and it allowed them to keep the core game without having to radically change it like CURB would have.  LucasArts and SOE didn't want to spend that kind of man power or money and both companies also misjudged the player base by thinking they wanted more of a "Battlefront" type of game.  Yes, one of the options was to make SWG just like Battlefront but was nixed as a bad idea.

How do I know?  I was a CSR from the time of launch until I moved on to GM another game at SOE shortly after NGE launch.   Those of you that used to grind in the Singing Mountain Caves on Bloodfin might remember some of my raids there to clear the place out.

    Fuhyo

    From Tigg's final post

Let me first point out that the CU that did go live that you all call CU 1 is actually CU 2. There was another version of the CU prior to what you saw that IMHO was MUCH better, but for some reason or another they took it upon themselves to redo the CU before it even went live.

But the CU 1 that I was shown was the game I wanted.

So according to Tigg's it was done or at least in the process of and i know who us vet's are going to believe.

Yeah, I miss the good times of Pre-CU. For all the haters who spam "It was just a game!' and "Get over it, move on!" maybe it is just some of our in-game experiences were better than yours, and it's as simple as that.

I was a first month vet of SWG. I played a primary and an alt, a combat primary and a crafter alt, like many back then. I had a blast doing everything, and never found it hard to find stuff to do, although organized "content" was sorely lacking back then, after the the first "Cries of Alderaan" story arc ended (yeah, there were supposed to be more of those, one of the uncountable promises made and broken by SOE.). I was never a power-gaming type, never really played a FOTM template, as some of historical revisionist haters seem to think everyone did. Pre-CU was world (albeit a buggy one) to play in, not a game or even a sandbox. Losing that is what we a lot of Vets are still PO'd about.

Good things I will always remember from my SWG time:

Starting off as a noob and getting help from people I didn't even know, we were all basically noobs then dropped in world with a melon and a knife. Took me a couple days to get enough credits to be able to get to a different planet. The community really was the best.

Meeting RL friends in-game and starting a guild. Meeting new, in-game friends to come and join, and we had people from age 12-58 for most of the time.

Figuring out what profs did what, and what mixes of skills were good with what. Best part of the game was the 250 skill point system and the ability to learn/unlearn skills on the fly. No levels, no fixed path, no power-leveling. Plus there were 40 or so different types of xp, so xp wasn't generic xp. I played a MBH in the oldest days, when you needed all of Scout and Marksman to get BH. I was one of the first MBHs on my server, and back then, it took some doing, BH xp was killer to get and the BH missions were bugged something fierce.

Our guild crafters got together and decided to "brand" all the products we put out, and put the guild name before the item name on everything we made. We collectively put out so many products, that people thought we took our guildname from items that were in game, like Kuat or Cygnis later in the game after JTL.

My crafter was an AS/Arch. Played Architect for the guild and AS for the challenge. I crafted a set of 100% resistance composite armor boots, using a set of 3 42% nightsister shards. This was back before the devs knew they needed to put a 90% cap on armor stats. I have the screenshot somewhere.  Best bit of crafting I ever did. That and the city hall I made on Founders Day, Nov 13, 2003, the day player cities and mounts went live. We got our city hall down JUST in time to be under the planet cap.

I remember all the guild hunts, resource digs, and faction PvP battles that raged for hours. Back in the days when 200 vs 200 battles around Anchorhead/Bestine happened all the time. I made good composite free for all the guildies, in our custom guild color-scheme, so everyone could ID their guildmates and fight as a unit. Good times those.

I remember the day I unlocked Jedi under the old pre-9 system. Did it more or less by accident. I was helping a friend who was REALLY trying to grind out the profs to unlock, and was grinding a few myself just to keep him motivated and help him with the AP. Before I even started this with him, I had mastered 12 or 13 profs just learning the game, and before anyone knew that was the path to Jedi. The first holocron I used, that he gave me, didn't do anything, and I figured it must be a bug or something. A couple days later when we both finished Entertainer, I got "The Music".  Unlocked. Man, was my friend pissed. He had to do 31 profs before he finally got it.

I remember playing my baby Jedi and how weak I was . Unlike other profs and post-9 Jedi, you could not take any non-jedi skills back then, so for a long time I couldn't use 200+ skill points worth of skills, because I hadn't earned them yet. I remember having to sit down and rest because I had to wait for the pathetic 150 force points I had to regenerate. I remember going out hunting grouped with guild bodyguards, because I was too damn weak to defend myself if BHs or griefers or even some spawns. These were the permadeath days. I remember finishing the Padawan box right before patch 9 hit, that was a big deal back then, took me 3 months to get through all the Initiate trees.

These are just a very few examples things a lot of we Vets miss about Pre-CU and why we are still pissed at SOE for being a bunch of unethical WoW epeen-envying wannabes. SOE took that game away from us, twice over. Why are many of us still pissed? Because there's nothing like Pre-CU before or since. We miss the "Greatest Story Ever TOld... Yours."  Yes, we know (maybe better than the haters) that Pre-CU was buggy as hell and far from perfect. But it was a buggy World then and not the buggy WoW clone it is now.

That is why we remember November 15.

It was a game for the love of god..a game you paid to use nothing more and nothing less did anyone die becuase of the CU/NGE? no they didnt

I have mates from my SWG days and we still keep in touch thats what made SWG special the community not the game,if anything it hindered the chat that used to go on when i was grinding.

The game was on its arse if it was doing so well it would still have been here in more or less its then current form but subs had dropped epmty servers told that story the game was flawed from the off but people  here dont seem to relaise this, they mourn a product..thats in case you've forgotten is what SWG a game,a product nothing more its time to get a grip on your lives and ask yourselves what the hell am i moaning about this game for??? is my life that empty i have to mourn a paiece of computer software?

If you come to the conclusion you must continue to mourn this product then seek medical help becuase honeslty you all need it.

No doubt the flames will come about me be a troll/fanboy etc but hey no i come to these forums trying to have sensible conversations with you all and on the most part we discuss the generic state of the MMO market and i enjoy the chat, but when i see threads like this well its time to say something...

Come on chaps its time to put this nonsense to bed and start to look for other games titles that surely must be around the corner or are indeed in the shops, not keep rehashing the same stale tired old sentiments of a dead game.

Well Fozzie, I don't thnk many here will argue the fact that the game we want is dead. However what is so wrong about discussing it? How does it impact your life so terribly that people choose to remember an amazing gaming experience?

The way I choose to look at it is this, if any gaming developers just happen to pay attention to sites and forums like these then maybe we can have an impact on future development of MMO's. I personally want to see more "sandbox" games. How is the industry going to know what people like me want if we don't talk abou it?

I've never been confronted by an MMO marketting team and nor have I heard of anyone else, so I'd have to believe that the industry is only guessing at what we want. I'd rather they not guess, and start paying attention to consumers.

    /rant over

And that was part of my point, at the beginning. Maybe it was one of many games to you, and maybe you found it easy to move and not harbor the hate of SOE. Some people liked it more. Many of my SWG friends, RL and otherwise, do keep in touch but most don't play MMOs much, because nothing measures up to that game. And that was most of my point. Many of us believe that SOE should be punished, PR wise, for gutting a game people spent hundreds of dollars playing, for me, $30/mo for 2+ years. I have bought played many games for ~$50 and if one those that are bad, I don't feel cheated.

But many of us thought old school SWG WAS a good game and then was ruined in the quest for the mythical millions that would leave WoW to play NGE. According to Smed.

So, it is not just the what, but the how and the why of it. And, no, it was not the cure for cancer, but it was a very good game that people spent a lot of time and money on, and now it isn't.

Maybe you don't hold SOE responsible, or don't feel they need to be held responsible for very poor treatment of customers.

    Many of us do.

I miss my friends from the original SWG... lost them after the NGE. But I will always have the memories. Oh sweet memories.

/salute to the best game community I ever have played in/with. Hope some day we will rise to our former glory again in some other game.

"With the NGE, I'm sorry about the mistake we made. We screwed up and didn't listen to the fans when we should have, and it's not a mistake we're going to make again. The mistake was to not just think we know the right direction without bringing the fans into the mix. We made the cardinal sin of not listening, but assuming and we were wrong." - John Smedley

From what i recall the player base had all but buggered off to play WOW when the NGE hit very poetic but as ever in this forum a very rose tinted post

lol, very poetic indeed, but I cant take credit for anything besides the starwarsy edits, as thats just F.D.R.'s "Infamy" speech, given the day after the Pearl Harbor attack of WWII.  (didnt pay attention in history class did we?)

All I basically did was switch out a few words here and there, like "December 7th 1941" became "November 15th 2005", "Japan" became "SOE", "San Francisco to Honolulu" became "Ahazi to Wanderhome", and so on and so forth, until presto, ya got a nice never-forget-the-nge speech, lol.

Sorry, I know it probably flew over the heads of most folk, but I majored in history at college, so this kinda thing is probably stuck in my memory a little bit more than the average joe, as Im basically the exact opposite of the "too much reading" target audience I was sold down the river for on Nov 15th 2005.

How you got the "WoW" thing, and "rose tinted" etc, reply of yours after reading that I still cant figure out though, it must've been in the "How to Flame a SOE Hater in 1 Sentence or Less" handbook given out at the annual Forum Troll convention (held in San Diego for the last 2 years if I remember right)

We're fine. We're all fine here now, thank you. How are you?"

I just love it when Smed brings out his employees and fanbois to try and put a damper on our party. If you dont like what we have to say simply stfu and gtfo of the veterans forum. We are not going to shut up just because you think we should.

And i tend to go from september 1939 when the second world war kicked off being british i was never learnt to much to my shame i may add about pearl harbour though i'm bloody grateful that terrible act did happen god alone knows what would have happened without the USA's involment in the war.

But comparing the 2 events even if jest is offensive to say the least to war vets to say the least

Working in an institution where I meet many WWII vets I'd say I haven't met one yet that didn't have an incredible sense of humor.

I'd be very surprised if they took offense to that, particularily when there was nothing derogatory to them specifically.

Hey, I just had a thought.

Maybe next year we should all create a trial account and meet up in Coronet.

It might actually be kinda fun.

We better pick a deserted server so it doesn't crash! :)
