Honestly, I'm bored as hell with these MMO's. I have a subscription to LOTRO and don't even feel like loggin in. Not one game on the list interests me. Except UO, if only they had a classic server.
MMO's are plain horrible right now. I suggest finding something else to play if your thinking about playing an MMO for your 1st time.
I don't think AoC is bad to the point of not playing it, but it's definately a disappointment insofar as where it was when released and where it is right now. I'm playing it, (66 Dark Teemplar), and it's just okay. If it didn't have stunning graphics, I would not be playing it at all. The game is not horrible by any means, but it's quite lackluster overall.
That being said, to the OP: There's nothing out there right now thats full-public yet, IMO, thats worth playing. I mean, yeah, there's a truckload of f2p games, maybe you could play one of those interim till something better comes out thats p2p. Personally, I'm waiting for Aion, Atlantica, and The Chronicles of Spellborn. I actually got a beta key for Atlantica from here, and I'll be actively playing on the 18th, if all goes well.
My tough part is I don't want to play something low to mid tech on the graphics side. Aion and Cronicles seem to be visually pleasing, (Chronicles I think s using the Unreal engine).
Best advice? If you MUST play something, goof with the f2p games. Don't bother dumping cash into something that you're gonna be playing interim. You did that with AoC, (as I did, so I'm not mocking you).
Requiem: Bloodymareis a really promising game and it has huge potential to become one of the best. Its korean but its not the typical mega korean grinders out there like flyff, ragnarok, knight online, mu online, etc. the english in this game blows flyff and knight online to sh*t! it actually plays quite a bit like WoW, you gain exp through quests (which come in forms of monster hunts, deliveries, and conversations. Theres already alotta people playing and its only been out for like a month and it keeps growing and it has a share of asian, euro, and american players, tons of ex-WoW people too.
since the game is pretty new, there are still some issues with the mechanics of the game. such as the classes being unbalanced and unfair, some of the monsters are unbalanced, wrong quest descriptions, minor bugs, etc. and there are a few dungeons (around 10-15) that are still under construction and unopened, so the end game is nowhere to be found, YET!
the pvp is like battlegrounds in WoW, which is appropriately called Battlefield, and it can go up to 10v10, 16v16, and 32v32.
so yeah this game is still loads of fun, the characters do look a little anime, but its a korean mmo, what do you expect, but it does feel very little like its korean counterparts. and plus it has gore! like everybody in requiem says, just wait a few months and this game will be great.

I bought The Witcher, but I couldnt really get into it because the controls were a bit funky to me.
The Witcher is everything AoC promised to be, in single-player form.
I'm currently waiting for the following mmorpg's:
1) Mortal Online - mortalonline.com (They promise it will be a sandbox mmorpg with FFA first person PVP combat. Allot of good things announced)
2)Fallen Earth - fallenearth.com
3)Ryzom - ryzom.com
And well that's it.
Cheers,
