you lost all credibility when you said AOC isn't that bad. AOC is just WoW with password protected special abilities btw. There is very little groundbreaking about it. Certainly less than WAR with the PQs, war banners, non instanced keep raids, city sieges, trophies etc.
you haven't played AoC... and you have no idea what you're talking about.
Noone said AoC was completely groundbreaking... but even an idiot would know and see that the combat is actually much more interactive than other MMOs... and that can only be a good thing....
I know this is the WAR forum but it doesn't hurt to be open-minded about other games as well

I m starting to get the impression you didn t come to the WAR forums to even discuss WAR at all just a round about way to bash it and put a plug in for AOC. I answered your questions, yet you comment on an AOC comment. Leave that for the other forum unless you want to start a why is AOC so bad chat mid post.
But you're simply saying, I don't like RvR, I don't like fantasy games. Ok, fine.
This is what pisses me off... just because elves and goblins is the most common theme for a fantasy based world, it doesn't mean they are the only.. in fact, some of the best aren't elves and golbins worlds....

Yes I have played it and no it isn't groundbreaking. Look in WAR you have an auto attack timer and you spam a special ability every 1.5 seconds or so. In AOC you have no auto attack and you spam a button every 1 second only for every special ability you want to use at high level you have to press 5 different buttons to make it fire off. The shielding system plays a pretty small role in combat because they shift around too much, it might make you switch the order of combos you use but that is about it. Active dodging/blocking is semi neat but not groundbreaking.
AOC combat seems a lot more in depth until you play a melee to level 80 and then you see it is just smoke and mirrors. I pick a special, I press 5 keys in order (something a 4 year old could do so it isn't hard) and then the combo goes off. There is no more thought or depth to the system than any other.

Actually some of the responses here have persuaded me to actually try the game.. when I was having second thoughts...

Well there' s more though to choosing which attack to hit with and where to hit and which combo to use depending on how long it will take to resolve etc etc than just hitting a damn ability like most other MMOs....
Funcom have made a lovely combat mechanic but sadly it isn't implemented to it's full extent...
It's got a lot of potential... maybe in some future game someone will re-use it properly.

Now that I can agree with. The idea behind the combat system is ok and I applaud them for trying something different. The implementation for me at least actually made melee combat more boring than in WoW/WAR type games which is unfortunate.
Even WAR looks very similar to WoW its not. In contrast to WoW where do not have complete conception but just different independent things to do, in WAR everything is around the RvR war: quests, public quests, RvR zones, scenarios. The feeling and atmosphere is great. You really feel the war, compared to WoW where you really do not know why you fight opposing faction (just because you can? ), what is purpose of BG ( just to get next item?), what is purpose of Arena (just to get your team up in the rank and again get better items?)... In contrast to WoW, WAR have complete MMO conception...
yup I agree... the feeling that you belong to a faction is there.. but still.... guild relations can offer that to you in any game... the rest of the game still has to offer you something more.....
See here's where you slightly miss the point to RvR...games that are all about ME or all about "guild" are only about 'the guild' or only about 'me' meaning anyone else is left out...cut off...sectioned out. RvR games are about your whole entire Realm..even GUILDS work with in the realm and for the realm but in non RvR games like WoW they only work for themselves. They could careless if they see some brothern horde members getting slaughtered its not their business, because it affects nothing. In RvR its important to fight off the otherside (unless said player is a dick then he deserves to be ignored) because it affects the game world. It affects Realm Control and it affects who gets to Siege on who's capital.
You can't look at RvR games in the same mindset as PvE games like LotRo and WoW. They have similiarities no doubt but beneath it all their fundamental arrangement of how the gameplay is centered is entirely different. WoW is centered entirely on the whole Arena / Dungeon PvE mindset. There's no 'war' between the two factions they just severly dislike each other. In WoW your in constant competition within your own Faction to be the 'top guild' or the top 'geared'.
WAR is a different mindset. Yes there's PvE but every lil peice of it adds to RvR and realm control. There's dungeons but every one of them is public like the PQ's except for the end boss and it counts towards RvR. Even the storyline behind the reason to go to the dungeons (read the bastion stair) is about the War effort. Add in the Open War fare and the Scenario PvP (for casuals or people who want a quick fight) and everything is centered around the utter hate for the otherside, the utter will to destroy them out right. And every bit of it counts towards realm control (open counts the most). Its an eternal game of tug o war with the players on each side changing out daily or even hourly ... very few games have this. Most games are about you or your guild and it never ever affects the gameworld.
To you the combat may seem 'stale' but honestly all games especially mmo...their combat system is pretty damn the same sometimes button B does soemthing in Game A then C but its still the same point click run around etc. Its always been up to the Players to make the game atleast video wise not seem 'stale'. How the abilities work and if there's CD swaps it up a bit but if your looking for a game where you suddenly have to strap on a helmet to control your character through Mind Controls well...you'll just have to wait another 50 years. I don't know how people expect things to change I mean look at FPS games people play and love those to death but how you physically play the game as far as controls is pretty much the same between every single game and the game play is the same. The world and the players you compete against and the weapons / vehicles change it up but if you watch a video it all feels and looks the same in my opinion.
I'm not saying your opinion isn't valid. I'm in the Beta too and my opinion of the feel of the game is entirely different than yours and when the NDA lifts I can't wait to say how.

I would actually agree with everything you just said. I am also in the closed beta and cannot wait until the NDA is lifted so I can go into why I agree.

Man, everybody and his aunt was saying that AoC was groundbreaking.
I wasn't. And many other people weren't as well.
Come on, it started smelling fishy 6 months before release. It was quite obvious they are doing a linear level-based grindfest from the moment they started giving out some more info on the game (single starting area 20 levels long.. wtf?!?). Their introduction of supposedly non-linear content later on without really explaining how they're going to merge the two was ominous to say the least.
Anyone who didn't get overwhelmed with a burning desire to see WoW toppled could have seen that there is something wrong about this game. "DX 10 and tits doth not a next-gen make." Sound familiar?
The only real surprise was that the game was so buggy at launch (and still is). Personally I expected broken core game which would lead to massive boredom and leaving of the game. However I couldn't have even dreamed of it happening even BEFORE the majority of players burned 1-way through the content.
In WAR, at least, everything is on the table and it's been discussed to the death. I'm 100% sure the core game design is sound. However I cannot guarantee for its polish at release. It may still turn out to be buggy and crappy in execution but at least the foundation is there.

Okay I have been keeping quiet since the 3rd page but I gotta answer this one
All FC did with the combat mate is to split it up and anybody with a gaming keyboard can put it back together again and in doing so gain a large advantage over others in PvP. Let's see, a combo when you have to press right, up, right, left or whatever just gets programmed to macro key 1 so instead of clicking on four arrows in sequence you now just press one key. Next combo to macro key two, next to macro key three etc. etc. you get the picture. When I was playing AoC all my combos were programmed to my macro keys and my double taps were programmed to my extra mouse buttons. In this way I had a huge advantage over anyone using a standard mouse and keyboard so all FC did was give more power to those gamers that could afford the extra hardware.
I've read/watched this game quite a bit... and I'm really trying to get excited about it.... but I can't... I know there's plenty of fanbois on this forum and I'll probably get crucified for my opinions... but WAR just seems like the same stale gameplay to me... I'm struggling to find something new... but all I see is another elf/goblin world with the same gameplay elements as other games...
The RvR which is the game's main selling point, is just zerg-battles... no matter how much you try to polish it. If you want a game for the graphics/action/blood/carnage... play AoC (No.. it's not as bad as people say... but it needs A LOT work yet) If you want a game for it's lore and character/world depth, play LOTRO (which is unparalleled in these areas) and if you want a game that's got a lot of things to do then play WoW (...i'm not a fanboi... i hate it' for what it has become)
So why play yet another game that offers you the same things as countless other games?....
Sure you might play it for a change of scenery, but how long will that last?.... Anyway... I'd like to hear some constructive posts... please don't flame me... just expressing my opinions and i'm not fanboi of any games.. (other than the Fallout series )
edit: fixed for NDA...(I hope)
No need to flame you at all but some of your comparissons are very poor and i'll informed. Most people have played the above games and guess what they held their attention for very little time so thats why we want something else.
Difficult to reply in a constructive way as your post has a lot of elements that border on trolling in this forumn and trying to get a reaction, no need for you to be here.
Sadly I agree with you though just realised i'm in the wrong forumn - come over have a look at fallen earth.
Generally speaking I tend to agree that WAR is very much like many of the MMORPGs out there. That being said Id like to point out some things I liked in the beta which are public knowledge. Which is simply so I dont break NDA.
1. Questing draws people together without them having to look for groups. The PQs are brilliant in my opinion because when you enter a area you just enter into a group with a matter of a click and away you go. No asking for group, no worrying about balance. Just join the fight and have fun.
2. Interesting locations with interactive elements. I like how there are easter eggs all over the place in WAR. I literally spend most of my time trying to find that odd little trinket or the awesome ruin which makes the world more interesting. Lotro did this to a extent but WAR did it better for me.
3. Humour! There is so much dirty, raunchy, plain flat hilarous humor in the War style that its spewing out of my brain! I cant tell you what Ive seen but Ive seen things which would make you cry your laughing so hard.
4. Thematic Armours- I love how well all the sets of armour fit together. Whether its a level 1 set of a 5, it will match.
5. Great artistic background! With your Anti-Alias turned up the game is just as good as LOTRO if not better and I cant even turn the graphics past medium as Paul said in a interview.
so on so forth Ive found a lot of reasons to love this game and think it portrays the elf and goblin world very well

Nope, I can see at least one possible NDA breach at frst glance.
You have signed a confidentiality agreement, check the terms of that agreement. You may not discuss the beta at all, all you may say is "Im in the beta" and thats about it.
Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy

Conan?.... Cthulhu?....what else?
We are forgetting one word when talking about this "fantasy" game. Its HIGH fantasy and games based on high fantasy are generally based around orcs/goblins/elves. However Sgel is completely right other than Conan. Elves/goblins/orcs are not the only high fantasy options out there. Asherons Call is high fantasy and there are no elves, orc, or goblins to be found. The high fantasy games without the typical races are out there, they are just far and few between so no, he isnt saying he doesnt like fantasy games. I also fail to see how thinking the WAR gameplay is Dull is saying he doesnt like fantasy games or RvR.

I did the exact same thing. I felt cheap after logging off though, but still. The combat system is BS. I tried it without macros and it did feel refreshing at the time, untill I remembered I have a G15 keyboard. That's when things started to get ugly. It instantly became the WoW-combat system and I had a very strong feeling I wasn't the only one doing it like that.
Again, it felt cheap, but it could be done, and Funcom can't do anything about it.

Exactly, there is nothing innovative about AoC's combat system whatsoever. It's like smoking I suppose, most mmo's have the ready mades that you just take out the pack and light, AoC wants you to roll your own and those with the fast rolling machine come out on top

I dont care too much about graphics or gore.. although WAR has decent graphics..
I dont care much for lore.. although WAR has a LOT of lore.
Lots of things to do are nice.. and I hear WAR has plenty of stuff to do.
but, what I really want is a game that has open world warfare, where co-ordinating your entire factions efforts in keep sieges across a range of battlefronts is the main focus of the game.
I don't want set X vs X PvP battles.. I want a dynamic ever changing battle landscape where the tide of battle ebbs and flows.. sometimes in your favour.. and other times not, where you have to grimly defend a keep for as long as possible knowing defeat is almost a certainty, hoping for relief from reinforcements.
I want a game where I can fight for something other than my own personal prestige and wealth. Something that others are fighting for too.
So..
Since DAoC is now a bit dated, perhaps you could tell me which games satisfy these requirements?
I think it all comes down to what we are after in a game. I enjoyed WoW, but all it lacked was RvR. If you have played DAoC, you'd know that zerging is common, but it is hardly all that RvR is about. Most times it is much more fun and tactical than that.
Sounds like what you really after is something more like the Total war games rather than a MMO
I have to say that personally, basing my opinion of the game on various fora and what little is released by Mythic, the game hasn't been able to convince me either. The two most talked about features, Realm versus Realm (RvR) and Public Quests (PQs), sadly don't seem too ground-breaking. When people talk about RvR they are raving about large-scale battles, which, based on the videos you can see e.g. on YouTube, do remind me quite a bit from every single bout I have ever taken in an MMO. The more there is people the messier it gets, but that hardly is an earth-shaking revelation one should just admire in awe.
The PQs then again are rather limitedly informed on the sources I could reach. For example I find it funny that I can read from a number of different quests there are but can't find anything from their functioning from the offical homepage of the game. From what I have gathered it will be a form of quest that you can do in an area together with others. Hmm, now then where have I heard this revolutionary idea before...That's right, about every game and their niece since the dawn of time. The ravenous ramblings of the innovative features and hyping them seems to be the forte of every upcoming MMO. That is why I can't understand when any attempts of even remotely constructive criticism towards any given game is met with a rock-solid opposition of fanboism. (And this is the very reason I appear confrontational with this message, just using the very same means these games are supported with.)
For the aforementioned reasons I would very much like to hear genuine opinions from the game itself, not these pointless ramblings where it is compared to a product X. Are the game mechanics really that interesting? Will the gameplay hold you on its firm wary grip? Is the balance actually taking a right track now that the number of choices has been limited? These and many other are the questions you would like to get answered before you choose to play or not. The more I hear overhype based on class B YouTube -videos the more reluctant I become to this game. I guess it is just me growing tired with classless releases that have been the name of the game for MMO-industry too many years now.

Mythic isn't trying to make a revolutionary next gen MMO...they just wanna make a fun game. Anyone who thinks it's going to revolutionize the MMO industry is sadly mistaken.
If you want revolutionary...wait for Darkfall.

(And this is the very reason I appear confrontational with this message, just using the very same means these games are supported with.) For the aforementioned reasons I would very much like to hear genuine opinions from the game itself, not these pointless ramblings where it is compared to a product X.
As Capn said, WAR isn't trying to be revolutionary. My best suggestion for you is to truly judge it at launch, but if you want to form interest before launch then wait until the NDA lift. You'll see hundreds of videos coming out of actual beta and testers will finally say what they have to say about the game - you can read their accounts and form a more accurate opinion. The more you want a revolutionary game, the more you'll be disappointed when it's not revolutionary. Honestly if you're tired of the way things are, may I suggest the RTS genre? Maybe FPS if you like more speed - but the Total War games are very fun.
Also, for PQs, the key difference is you don't have to sit in the zone saying "LFG _______" for 20 minutes. PQs don't require a group so you can charge in there and have all the fun you want. Rewards are based on participation so the more you help the better reward you will recieve. PQs constantly reset so if you make it to the end of one, all you have to do is wait 5 minutes until it restarts. Then you can do it from the beginning and recieve the full rewards. That's not revolutionary but it's a damn good idea.
-------------------------------------- A human and an Elf get captured by Skaven. The rat-men are getting ready to shoot the first hostage with Dwarf-made guns when he yells, "Earthquake!" The naturally nervous Skaven run and hide from the imaginary threat. He escapes. The Skaven regroup and bring out the Elf. Being very smart, the Elf has figured out what to do. When the Skaven get ready to shoot, the Elf, in order to scare them, yells, "Fire!"

Correctamundo.
Like with any other innovation, the changes come in piecemeal. WAR should be been as potentially being a nice step in that direction, but not the destination. They're not aiming to be the revolution, just do a certain formula better.
Ironically, a revolutionary game would probably be too unfamiliar to attract the attention and subscribers needed to convince other developers to copy them.
well if war not a game for you .. then don't play it because warhammer based on the big fun fights . thats the big thing about it were not going to grab hold of you and suck you in.. but if it's not enjoyable go back too wow because warhammer will still do fine.. but im telling you warhammer like the Obama .. while wow is like the mccain but Hell I would love to play a game were it feels like 2 armys crashing shield agaist shield slaughtering the shit outa each other and bodies everywere
I don't play Wow... read my post.
I don't want you to suck me in... I want the game to suck me in...
As for big armies slaughtering each other... erm.. you can allready find that in many games?
I'm just looking for the reasons surround all this hype... what are all these new things that people are hyping this game about?
Ummm, ok just off the top of my head:
- The siege system is pretty new and innovative, with their siege weapons and the like
- How about public quests, I've never seen those in any MMO before
- RvR - By definition, it's a Mythic brand thing. WAR will evolve the RvR system created for DaoC
- Capital cities / living sities - more quests, dungeons and things to do in yuour standard MMO city
- They have a pretty cool map system that I haven't seen before.
- The Tome of Knowledge, which similar to the book in LotRO, expands on that particular idea.
These are just ideas off the top of my head. I'm not even a fan of the game, but I am someone who watches the industry as a whole pretty closely. If you don't like the look of the game and it isn't for you, that's cool. Making your point by insinuating that thsi game doesn't bring anything new or innovative to the table is just kinda silly.
but, what I really want is a game that has open world warfare, where co-ordinating your entire factions efforts in keep sieges across a range of battlefronts is the main focus of the game.

Eve online.
You do realize that what you described is pretty much the premise of WAR right? RvR?

I m starting to get the impression you didn t come to the WAR forums to even discuss WAR at all just a round about way to bash it and put a plug in for AOC. I answered your questions, yet you comment on an AOC comment. Leave that for the other forum unless you want to start a why is AOC so bad chat mid post.
This is what pisses me off... just because elves and goblins is the most common theme for a fantasy based world, it doesn't mean they are the only.. in fact, some of the best aren't elves and golbins worlds....
Conan?.... Cthulhu?....what else?
..Cake..

Comparisons with other games are inevitable
..Cake..

The implementation for me at least actually made melee combat more boring than in WoW/WAR type games which is unfortunate.
yup I agree... the feeling that you belong to a faction is there.. but still.... guild relations can offer that to you in any game... the rest of the game still has to offer you something more.....

Guys! I'm hopelessly lost in a mountain of mole hills! Them damn moles!

Eve online.
You do realize that what you described is pretty much the premise of WAR right? RvR?
