Wasn't Jett Lucas the kid in Ep2 that got ganked by the troopers on order 66?

I'd compare LA/SOE relying on Jett's judgement of the game to George Bush relying on Ronald Rumsfeld for the security of USA and their army, ah wait... Rumsfeld left. :) Anyways Rumsfeld was an idiot and didn't know wtf he was doing or saying- get my drift?

    Apparently LA/SOE thinks Jett Lucas > 250K subs, but that's wrong. :P

So you are telling me that because the SOE developers told you that Bioware isn't making a Star Wars MMO it is a credible source?  Yet the CEO of EA tells you they are, and it isn't a credible source?

    Funny stuff.

Of course the SOE developers are going to tell you that SWG isn't going away, IF IT GOES AWAY THEY DON'T HAVE A JOB.  Same old, same old.  Smedley promises an expansion in 2006, the developers promise collision detection in 2006, capital ships were promised after the NGE, and oh...  We were told by SOE that the CU was here to stay!

Yep, SOE is sure a credible source!  *rollseyes*

Don't be too proud of this technological terror SOE has constructed. The ability to amaze a handfull of fanbois is insignificant next to the power of the Veterans.

You mean the veterans who have been oh-so-successful in shutting down SWG? Oh, wait ...

Earth to JestorFrodo ... you have no power.

So I started to walk into the water. I won't lie to you boys...I was terrified. But I pressed on, and as I made my way past the breakers, a strange calm came over me. I don't know if it was divine intervention or the kinship of all living things, but I tell you, Jerry, at that moment ... I was a marine biologist.

    Sorry vets, this game rocks.

The Hoth Battle does have potential, however the end result or implementation tends to not be as exciting as when first presented, due to cut in features, simplified game rules and bugs.  The Battle is a good theme park ride, but it does not offer anything else besides that.  As mentioned before, Star Wars Battle Front is good enough (maybe even better, a personal preference), has multi-player capability (I would believe just as much or more than the Instance), PvP, and does not cost $15/mo.

Now IF the Hoth Battle had some kind of influence with the rest of the game world, then that becomes a completely different issue and has tremendous value.  And that should not stop with Hoth either...

Such an implementation could actually make SWG into a great game and bring back veterans.  Really, no joke.  Imagine, if there were other planets that had such wars with vehicles as with the Hoth Battle.  That each battlefield determined the control of the planet or region.  Kind of similar to Planetside you could say.  Effectively the long time promised Galactic Civil War.

If such a feature were to be added, then I would believe that the subscriber count in SWG would go up.

However, given past history and management practices, I think such a Golden Egg will be missed.

The reason Hoth is not a planet and is a instance is because LEC does not want to advance the timeline of the game.

That makes NO sense...  It's in the game therefore the game timeline has been advanced.

The reason that Hoth is an instance and not a planet is because the SWG developers don't have the technical prowess to add anything meaningful to the game.  Instancing is about as lame as it gets.

it is also instanced like that as there is nothing on hoth but a battle and a snow beast according to the story, and imho it would be better instanced as a batlle than a an open snowy tundra with snow yettis all over the place.

It's another reason why SWG is not going away, two different products.

This doesn't even come close to qualifying as a rumor.

"This guy that I met and only know through the internet told me that he talked to a game developer that works in the same city as Bioware, and that developer told him that the top secret Star Wars game his competitor is developing isn't actually a MMO that will compete with and perhaps even lead to the shutdown of his MMO, but is just a multiplayer game... so you should keep on playing his game and pumping money into it."

    1) Frankly, your guildy just isn't anything like a reliable source.

    2) Even if Blix siad it, *he* isn't anything like a reliable source.

And that is another reason why SWG will not be great.

Players cannot impact the story arc.

Why can't SWG be of the Alternate Star War's Universe?  What if the Rebels held out at Echo Base and defeated the Empire or what if Darth Vader was *gasp* slain by a player?

Why not allow for such possibilities?

After all SWG does not mirror the movies of Episodes 4 and 5.

lol battle of Hoth, in and around Echo base but it's nothing to do with ESB, no sireeeeee the timeline hasn't advanced, nope.

If LEC approve this shit for implementation in the game without allowing an advance of the timeline it's almost as bad as them allowing a dozen Jedi to be duelling outside Mos Eisley SP.

I have not idea what you are talking about but as far as this instance only  cutscreen side show of SOE's it is putting their best face forward.  Later with the hands on demo of this instance - it was super buggy and rubberbandy.  Yes,  SOE  knows how to market their successes and shadow their shame.

I'd be curious to know if Blixtev is speculating like everyone else or does he have some inside information? What I mean to say is he only commenting on his interperatation of the interview with the EA president or does he infact have more information?

I for one cannot imagine a developer making a game that is not an MMO anymore, or at least one that does not use a business model of continued payment over time. Anything less then a real MMO seems like it's going to be a step backwards and a let down for a whole lot of people. I really feel that a SW game (particularily one using the PC as a platform) needs to be an MMO to reach the massive audience developers are looking to.

But regarding the videos I have to admit they do look impressive, but I certainly agree with pdxgeek in that they look like cutscenes rather then actual gameplay. It looks like they showed you just enough to imply things that may not even be up to people's expectations.

We'll just have to wait and see, but experience has taught me not to get overly excited.

Well, you have to consider that LucasArts is contractually obligated to SOE as much as SOE is to LA. So LA would more than likely have to disclose whether any new Star Wars mmos are indeed coming out. So it is indeed possible for Blixtev to have that info.

This speculation might just be accurate. Sounds lots like Fable 2. You can bring people into your own personal world. You have a huge effect on your own world this way as everyones world is unique.

Whatever bioware is doing I feel The Old Republic is going to rock.

Hmm.. Looks like crap tbh. Lets wait and see if this is worth even trying on free-trial.

  • ThunderousThunderous Member Posts: 1,152

Just a cookie-cutter instance on top of a bad combat engine.  This is still the SWG development team we are talking about here so I don't expect much.  I will try it when the next vet trial rolls around.

Would have been a heck of a lot cooler if Hoth was an actual planet one could explore and there was a constant batlefield taking place.  It would have given a lot more meaning to the GCW.  But these guys are only capable of these cookie-cutter instances, so it seems.

It won't be enough to keep subs because the core elements of the game are still busted;  combat, economy, painfully dull professions, and an aweful grind.  But it will give all the fanbois something to tell us about for a month or so until they are bored of it.

Hehe take it all with a grain of salt at this point I never ever say anything until its actually up and I play with it, but that clip looked like a re-enactment of the speeders taking the AT'-AT's down in the movie so yeah you did :)

My only hope is that this is just not an instance that you fight from beginning to end  and that people can jump into it without being in a group just faction and the load of the hoth instance determines your ability to enter

Hopefuly its more of the playground that it appears to be instead of just the dungeon.   Its already been stated that the hoth area has a dungeon as part of it.   So to me this means I can go in there and fart around just with a friend which would be awesome.  If this is the case then the statement they made about it being more of an expansion awhile back is in fact true.    We shall see, but from what I am seeing and the reason I started playing this game again was that is suddenly one day when i logged in showed progress and promise and I wasn't forced into FPS again.

I"m sure this next sentace will get flamed from ehre to kingdom come, but to me it looks like sony has learned from its passed mistakes and that they are being given the leway to fix what needs to be fixed and license to add the stuff that was on the drawing board awhile back now.    I just wish they would fix the ugly HUD ...

If this is so I wont be going anywhere for awhile yet and still be playing this game.  The addition of halloween content and revival of the life day stuff shows that something has happened and for the better.

umm which version of empire strikes back where u watching as i'm pretty certain that 1 speeder couldn't take down six AT-AT's  in a row in the version i saw

this vid is either just something that was put together to promote the instance and has nothing really to actually do with the instance they are going to introduce and SOE are just lying again

or it isn't a realistic representation of the battle for echo base and the 'we went and copied the film to the detail' posts/interviews etc are just SOE lying again

I too would have like this to be a fun instance but from other posts it looks to be just the same as all the other instances they've introduced recently only this time u are going to need to find 7 other people of the same faction as u to do this one
