A Nice performing computer that I built for my bro was this based on A64 socket 754 if he would of gone to the Athlon XP's and such or sempron there woudn't beem much more of a saving maybe $100(( or not even that much cause if you factor in the price to get some better memory to OC a XP mobile 2500+ to 3200+ speed then you kinda loose some of the savings)) but then the socket A will be less upgradable and the 754 can go up to the 3700+ at least, and the A642800+ performs on par with a AthlonXP3200+ so an A643000+ is more than enough
$147AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (-$11 less//$136 you can get a A642800+) $93EPoX "EP-8KDA3J" nForce3-250Gb $68Western Digital 80GB 7200RPM SATA 8MBcache (-22less//$46WD Caviar 80GB 7200RPM ATA/100) $76Corsair Value Select 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 Cas2.5 (-$16less//$60-Generic1X512) $40Case with 430W PSU $200(oem version got it at fry's elec.)AIW RADEON 9800 PRO 128MB (-$100less//$100 9600 Pro 128MB) $84 Microsoft Windows XP Pro (student version i knew school would be good for something soon)
Total $708 //$608with9600pro//$559(if use all alternatives)
He already had a monitor a 17" and keyboard mouse(cost him around $20) & and a CD drive52X ($10)
One more thing I forgot to mention AMD is now Shipping (939socket) Winchester Core A64's 3000+ 3200+ and 3500+ on the 90nm process not the 130nm they will cost about the same as the the 754 socket parts but since its new it costs a little more at the moment if you wait a little bit then just get the 939 90nm winchester core ones and it will be more future proof since that is the current top of the line socket line for AMD and will be able to upgrade way past the 4000+ and FX chips and they are just releasing the PCIe version boards pretty soon if you want that also shouldnt be long since they already reviewed the VIA K8T890 chipset reference boards and you can get a 6600GT PCIe then for the $199 instead of 9800pro and it performs better than the 9800pro so basically around same performance or better but with new tech.
What you all think ?? case sucks but he plans to change than soon he just wanted to get the computer build and not worry about minor stuff ( he didnt want to wait ) .....
I would stick with the Corsair RAM and no go cheap on that. Stick with the 9800, you'll be a lot happier that you did. Other then that it's a nice rig. Cheaper then mine...
Yeah you are right it is best if you dont get some crappy ram it wont be as reliable and might have problems with it including maybe compatibility or whatever plus this ram turned out to be quite good i mean for a Value ram it has Cas 2.5 (bro's ran at 2,3,3 timings luck of the draw) anyway i managed to OC it to 220 mhz so the proc. is now running at the same speed as the 3200+ not bad i guess now its my turn to save some cash up so i can update my rig but it must be faster than my younger bro's
I have OCZ performance ram in my rig and it makes such a difference over standard ram.I had 1gig unbranded RAM before and it ran Ok, but when i put my OCZ babies in my machine absolutly flies. I have the running on dual channel.
Ok, Ok, ill post what im getting again. Im selling my current pc next week and then ill finally have the cash reserves to buy my super rig ^^
Because im selling my PC i have to get new keyboard, mouse etc. So it give me the chance to really make my pc look great.

This lot is going to cost me $2,315 (£1280), which is pretty good considering im getting a LCD screen etc too. Anyway, pick at my choices all you like... they aint changing
Nah, LCDs arent as bad as they used to be, in fact they are alot better aslong as you get one with a pretty swift response time they're fine. This one has a response time of 16ms, which for most newer games will run absolutly fine without ghosting. But if i put Q3 arena in i probably would get ghosting with q3 running at 250fps () thats obveosus. However, im not going to be playing Q3 or many older games on it, why would i buy such a l337 rig if i was
You may see this as expensive for american prices but remember we have high tax on everything over here. 17.5% of the value of the product is added on as tax, so its pretty cheap for the uk.
What about RAM? And you should really look into getting a HDD with at least 8Mb cache... for a HDD that big, you really want nothing less.
I have a 60Gb with 8Mb cache and it's really really fast.
The PSU is good too. Antec also makes really good PSUs.
And I would get a Tornado 92mm fan or something in those lines and a better heatsink. That CPU cooling system looks like junk...
I would look into a Thermalright. I got myself a SLK-900A and couldn't be happier with the block of copper I bought. And you should also pick some Actic Silver 5 up too.
need advice on which cases i should be considering.....read alot of good things about thermaltake and was considering their line with much thought...however should i get one with a built in power supply and so forth

DualDDR really does make a huge difference. Plus like Coraith said, having better RAM mean better timings... which leads to faster everything.
Right now I have my RAM at 2-2-2-4? If I remember correctly. That's very nice timings.

Its a good job i copied this, or i would have lost the lot. oh wait, i still lost the lot ._.
I did post my new pc specs, but now i cant be bothered. Will dual channel memory work on a 754 socket mobo?
Yup, DDR works fine on the A64 (754 socket) even if its just designed to operate on Single channel mode
where are those new pc specs ?

definatly go with that heatsink/fan. Thermaltake is well known for their cooling and its worth every penny in the longrun. 5500 rpm's really help
You can also get one of each.
I spent a good $45 just on my heat sink. So, depending on what type of cooling you want to get, depends on how much you want to spend.
For someone like me, my whole system is overclocked... so I need the best cooling.
