I want to buy an ati x800 and i was wondering when installing that video card, do i just simply insert the video card into the APG slot and thats it? because i read somewhere that you have to do something with the power voltage or something like that, can anyone tell me how the installation goes?

Also i was wondering if i wanted to replace my processor, as in take the old one out and put in a new one, is that possible?

Hey everyone, I have a GeForce FX 5600 256mb currently, which isnt a bad card in my opinion, but it just dosent keep up with some of the newer games out there.  Any suggestions on what card to get and reasons why?

Also whats a good site to get a deal on it?  I've been using pricegrabber.

I have a friend who loves ATI, that's what I've been looking to get.  Newegg.com has a ATI RADEON 9800PRO Video Card, 128MB DDR, 256-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP on it's site for $233.  It's so pretty.  *sigh*  Anywhoo, as my friend said, and the reviewers on the site, it's a great card, ATI's are pretty reliable, a lot lower on the skipping.  Someone who reviewed said they had the GeForce FX 5200, and it's (the 9800 card, that is) a ton better.

I'm thinking hard about getting it myself, I just have to scrape together my pennies, or find a sugar daddy.  image

aye, I have the 9800 XT

the problem are the drivers..it crashes too much

if I could, I would trade it in for an equally strong Nvidia card.

    just for the stable drivers

Hehe, no, no mixup, I know, it's so much much better, I was just giving it as a point of reference for the other video card, so if they wanted to see how it paired up, they would have it to compare against.  The 9800 is very pretty.  The 5200....not so pretty. image

are there any replacement drivers instead of this catalyst crap?

it's getting real annoying during eqii with crappy drivers.

I heard something a while ago about a site just making replacement drivers for ati cards

    anyone know anything?

Hey I had a question I was hoping somebody could help me with. I'm realitively new to computers and I'm looking to get a better system. As of now I have a Delll 2400, 2.4ghz, Intel celeron processor (ugh!), 512mb ram, and nvidia geforce fx 5200 video card. Not a very nice gaming rig!

So, what is my best option? Buying a new rig, builiding a totally new one, or doing a mass upgrade on my current sysytem. One of the big problems for my current computer is the motherboard only has a PCI slot so that kills my video card options.

My first choice would be to do a huge upgrade like a new mobo, processor, memory, video card, etc. Could someone tell me all the things I would need to do an upgrade? Is what I listed all I would need to do this? Or is it even possible to make such an upgrade with a dell 2400? As you can see I'm kinda lost. Buying a new rig is not out of the question, but I would rather upgrade if possible.

I want to have a pretty top notch rig and money isn't a huge issue but I don't want to spend a HUGE amount eithier. I'm thinking somehwere in the $800 to $1,600 for buying a new one and whatever the cost is for upgrading my current system. I'm assuming upgrading is less exspensive but it takes more work which isn't a problem eithier.

Ant help would be greatly appreiciated. Thanks!!!

I would go with a new mobo and power supply, then videocard, ram, then processor.

Take note of the power supply. Dell uses a proprietary Power Supply that has a special connector, for their proprietary mobo, that looks normal, but isn't.

If you buy a socket 478 board (that supports the 800Mhz fsb Prescotts) you can use the same celeron until you get a faster processor and Ram. If you want to go all out you could go for the new LGA 775 socket for intel, with support for DDR 2. Or you could go for the better performing AMD 64, or better yet the AMD Athlon 64-FX on Nvidia Nforce 4 http://www.nvidia.com/page/nforce4_sli.html .

When you're upgrading on this scale, you basically end up with 2 PCs and one case. Somtimes its worth it just to buy a whole system.

Thanks AntiJohnny. If I get all these parts, would I be able to put them in without alot of trouble, or would it be a alot of modification to make them fit? Thanks again!

As long as you have a mid-size or full-size tower you should be fine. To make sure, measure the parts you have in the case right now and note if they are snug or if there is room. Then double check the specs of the hardware you are buying. It shouldn't be a big deal, but every once and a while you get an oddball size part.

cool thanks man. I'll think about what my best options are. Thanks again for all your help!

Anyone know if this upgrade will work in a dell 2400 case: (also if you have any suggestions on different products that would be appreciated as well)

Asus P5GD-1 VM Intel Socket 775 MOBO, Suppotrs PCI express

    Intel P4 530 3.0 Ghz, 1mb cache,socket 775

PCMCIS 480- watt ATX power supply

    Ultra 1024MB PC3200 DDR 400Mhz Memory

Chaintech GeForce 6600 256MB DDR PCI Express video card.

Will these parts fit in a dell 2400 case? Like I said any product suggestions would help as well. Thanks!

  • SerienSerien Member CommonPosts: 8,460

well see, the last time I opened up a dell, (lone time ago)

i remember this big mofo green stuff in there, thus, causing it hard to upgrade

I'm sure it can be changed..but I would have to say you're better off spending the 50 more and getting a new chassis.

Thanks for the help Mirt. I was kinda thinking it would be better to just get a new case as well. Will i be able to transfer all my drives to a new case? Im assuming I can.

  • SerienSerien Member CommonPosts: 8,460

oh yea, they just slip out *with regular cases, I'm not sure with dell though*

just slip em all out, unscrew the motherboard...well you're changing the motherboard anyway

pull out fans, pull out the psu, and your case is stripped bare!

Coool thanks again for your help Murt. To be honest i am getting a little tired of seeing this old dell case so a change of pace would be nice.

I don't know how well the 9800 performs but I am running the G-force 5200 and I have never had any probs at all, I can even run DOOM3 with no skips.it may not be the best card but it will do the job if your strapped for cash.image
