Hmm, is that saying you can download the game for free, play it for free as well but to open up certain area's and other things you have to use the item mall? Which could cost you 1 hell of a lot more a month than a simple monthly subscription?
One thing that gets me is most players carnt afford too much, especially if there is more than 1 player in a household. So if a game comes out at £8.99 a month and offers value for that and a game comes out at £12.50 a mth which one is going to lose? even if that higher priced game is on par. I can tell you right now the lower priced one will win out.

No.
You need to purchase the game, pay the premium price of $15 a month and if you want access to some new loot and facilities (such as new housing, speeders, etc.) you can either hope to get this from a set of cards you receive free of charge every month or increase your chances buy buying them.
How much your chances will increase? No one knows...
So who of you is looking forward to SW:Tor ??? To end a somewhat surprisingly eventful day for the RMT and microtrasaction model, EA has announced that Star Wars: The Old Republic will not be subscription-based. Instead, the title will be gain revenue from a microtransactional model. Shacknews reports this surprising tidbit from a conference call held by the mega-publisher earlier today. Said CEO John Riccitiello, "The Star Wars online MMO [is a] mid-session game, microtransaction-based. You'll be hearing more about those in the February [conference] call." According to the game news site, "Mid-session" is a term that EA uses synonymously with microtransaction-supported titles. This fits effortlessly into EA's portfolio alongside games like Warhammer Online and the DICE title Battlefield Online. http://www.massively.com/2008/12/09/star-wars-the-old-republic-to-be-microtransaction-based/ orignal post > http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/56292
Heh, was about to post that. SOE is still the evil one though, right?
Oh certainly, seeing as Bioware has been honest and up front about how their game is going to work. SOE just drastically changes it whenever they feel like it, while promising the opposite. The fact that you can't tell the difference is appaling.
Don't let the post I made be leading, for now........................ it's a RUMOR............... ( though at the time of posting didn't know it was a rumor) http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=9553

The CEO of EA made the statement on an investor confernce call. Do you really think he was lying when he stated that and if he was do you think the FTC wouldn't eat him alive for lying to investors given the current economic malestrom?
The community statement was not a denial and certainly didn't provide any further information. TOR will have microtransactions and probably alot of them;

Or at the very least they may give an option for microtransactions based on what server you join.

True...that could be an option.
I really dont see how this will work. microtransactions affect gameplay, and as such they will have to monitor two different systems which affect loot-tables, items, access to areas, or whatever they decide it will have an impact upon.
It could probably be done, but I find it very unlikely.

Sony Online Entertainment has partnered with Live Gamer to provide Vanguard: Saga of Heroes customers with the same exchange system that our EverQuest II customers on The Bazaar and Vox servers enjoy. Live Gamer exchange provides the security and transparency needed to trade virtual items with confidence, and with the Live Gamer system, participants will be able to both auction and purchase virtual assets (characters, coin, and items) securely and safely and without the risk of the fraudulent activities that plague 3rd party websites that are not authorized by SOE to provide these services.
Participation in Live Gamer exchange is not mandatory or required, but those wishing to participate in this new service must first register an account with www.livegamer.com. Once registered, you can then utilize the in-game system to upload virtual assets to your Live Gamer account and auction them to others. You can also use your Live Gamer account to bid on and purchase virtual assets and to send them to your in-game characters / accounts.
Live Gamer is offering an in-game incentive for trying the system out. Customers that register with Live Gamer within the first two weeks will receive a jewelry box which when opened will offer a choice between one of three items, each targeted towards one of the three key professions. For more information about this offer, please visit www.livegamer.com after the service has launched.
We will append this post with availability dates for the new service as soon as possible.
Dont have any problems with micro transations in this or any other game. they already existed even if cloaked under the gize of "gold selling" or "power leveling" among several games.
It also reflects current society where almost anything can be subject of transaction. if x player is willing to waste the money on a pixelized item... then so be it. but at least make the process open.
let's be honest here, how many rank 14 players in wow got the items associated with the rank fair and square and how many paid to have some people farming honor 24/24 for months to reach that goal-- in my book that is a form of cloaked micro transaction,
isn't blizzard also offering some forms of microtransactions (granted they are cosmetic ones, so without any real effect on gameplay.. at least for me, i dont care if the tank is an elf male or female....)
thats the next bussiness model with mmorpgs. and this is just the debut stage. live with it.
There's one thing about 3rd party sellers, their website is often littered with malware which grabs your CC or login info, this is how accounts in WoW and Lineage and such gets hijacked. Only a small percentage of people actually buy ingame money or power leveling services by the Chinese/Korean farmers or whatnot, and if they're stupid enough to it then they deserve to get their accounts hijacked.
It's kind of humorous to see a comment stating that SOE wants to compete and drive the 3rd party MT organizations out of business. In most games those 3rd party guys spam emails, tells or broadcast a general area every 2 minutes to get some customers then rinse and repeat with a new account once they get reported and banned (and many companies find ways to prevent that, usually by restricting trial accounts). The microtransation model isn't exactly popular among game communities, especially when it's being added to a pay to play game.
And I have to agree with a previous poster, it's dead clear that SOE are desprate for extra cash.
SWG has been used as a testbed so many times by SOE that it ought to be piece of furniture at the Mustang Ranch. That being said, outside of the TCG, is there anything that the players consider worthy paying extra for anymore?
well...they are calling the city update a content publish when in reality it is a bunch of bug fixes that should have been addressed long ago.
SOE will always be trying to ring as much cash as possible out of games such as SWG. Due to the franchise, there will always be fans of Star Wars looking to get their fix out the game. That was the reason I kept going back to SWG.
But the SOE business plan has never been to have an adequate income that could keep the game going whilst also keeping customers happy. It has always been, and always will be, 'squeeze as much money as we can out of customers for the time they stick around'.
This new addition seems pretty pointless for SWG though since the economy is totally busted and there isn't anything worth buying in the game anyway.

Yep...it certainly looks that they are trying to milk the subs and use the NGE as a RMT testbed.
