This is directed to people thinking about buying the game.
I'm an ex UO player and had high hopes for Darkfall as being the spiritual successor to UO. I bought the game on March 10 and unless a miracle happens I'm not going to resub.
I consider myself a balanced adult. I have a wife, kids and a job. The only thing in my basement is junk and I like open worlds that truly reflect the real words in "mmorpg". I guess in Darkfallese that makes me a carebear because I dont want to sit around ganking people all day but would rather play a mmo while doing it.
Darkfall is not a MMORPG. Its a massive multiplayer online first person shooter. That is pretty cool actaully idea, but its not what the publishers said would be. They said they would build the space shuttle, I expected a BMW and we got a Chevette. I dont pay a monthly fee to frag people.
The (vocal) community is made up of people I simply don't want to associate with.
"did you see what he wrote? only a fucking loser would write shit like that"
"Agreed, but since WoW attracted all the idiots to the mmorpg games there's not much you can do, "OMG I GOTZ 100 WEAPONZ SKILLZ AND LOST, YOU HAXXOR!!1!"... bullshit..."
I'm not going to quote anymore but I will leave it at the notion that the hardcore masochist, immature, hate mongering , pvp is cool everything else isnt, pea brained vocal minority is not the minority at all in this game. It has lead me to suspect that there is some percentage greater than I care to imagine of people I simply don't want to share my time with.....this is their game!
The company bit off way more than they can chew. Their communication has improved but we are launch date + 1 month and they have very little characteristics of a company running a mmorpg.....characteristics that are both expected and necessary in a modern mmo.
Still no website, still staggered sales, still no indication on when the game is going to be finished. There is far less implemented in game than whats mentioned on their site.....I sense unprofessionalsim to the nth degree.
Don't buy this game unless you enjoy living in a hate infested childish community because I think everytime someone said go back to WoW noob- 10 players who dont live in mom's basement playing Quake III did.
Based on AV's track record I think they are either:
a> trying to dupe me out of my cash
b> Hard working folks who dont have the resources to do what they said / thought they would do and instead are catering to their main bread and butter which is not your typical mmorpg gamer.
The community is really no help here because anytime anyone with anything to say about the game suggests that something be improved that reduces the ganking/grief anti social play aspects, or anytime someone suggests that maybe they should add some actual PvE the community responds en masse with quotes like above.
Save your money I think the game is full of punk ass kids who need lessons in living in a community of other human beings and I dont see ANYTHING on the radar that is going to change that.

I agree.
But im having the time of my life, and i hate PvP. I do RP and explore the world instead.
If they can implement more PvE and balance the game off with more mentally stable folk maybe i'll look at it again but I dont see taht happening since they can't even build a website.
subs will force AV to rethink...then there is MO around the corner. And if that turns out crap, there is always the unnanounced MMO Blizzard is making, that should be a combo of sandbox and classic MMO...
But think of the positives, most every a$$hat gamer you've never wanted to play with is enjoying Darkfall, keeps them out of your favorite game. Every time I meet one I strongly recommend they give DF a try.
Heck, I may pay for their subs for a month. Naw, you can't buy the game anyways.
Have to laugh though, people are always saying WOW has a bad player community.
Right.... there is worse, and it resides in Darkfall it would appear.
Yeah, I know, "shut-up carebear, you aren't leet enough to play DF, go back to WOW"

More PvE wont help you OP. There is no point with PvE if other players wont allow you to get to the mobs. You need to take control of a area. Fight everyone else, then you can do all the PvE thats already in : )
there is definately a balance to be struck between ultra theme park WoW and Hardcore FPS games......a balance not yet achieved. Based on one thing alone I now have my sites set on another game......but I will be playing Vanguard now for a while.
Playing Darkfall then playing Vanguard is like eating Chinese food at two different resturants.
I Think the OP summed up my exact stance and feelings on darkfall. Its even more worrying when people actually use L33t speak over ventrillo like its just an everyday language.
Its not really much of an rpg, you progress very slow along a huge grind. I know its good that 2 or 3 new players can kill a well kitted out vet if they have skill but i think id rather play an rpg than an fps. I have other fps for that that dont have a grind eg quake cod4 cs blah blah.
Shut up carebear! you arent l33t enough to play DF! Go back t... oh
Respect, walk

Hmm, this is the first review that has altered my wish to play DF right now. I think I will wait until MO comes out....and then I will play DF

I think that we'd get the same responses-behavior if UO had chat channels back in the 1997. And what went wrong and UO turned into 2 different worlds? The lack of gank and immaturity? I don't think so.
Try a mature clan. Paragus has a good one.
I stayed in Tram until my guy was built up and I rarely met immature people. Well I was like 14 so I was probably the immature one, but I remember staying on my best behavior because so many people I ran into had high levels of respect for one another. When I PKed in Fel, yeah, ganking and immaturity was quite high but I did not have to subject myself to it unless I was in the mood.
Hrm, I could PvE freely and PvP freely in UO... hrm, maybe DF will notice? Probably not.
He's just mad because you can't solo every mob in this game. You have to have groups to do any good PvE
This
and what makes it gold is the fact that the message under his avatar completely negates his 1st post.
irony or may i dare say its somthing else.
Im going to sell you a dream.
I hear what your saying, however what else is out there? A lot of crappy games, that's what. The game is still young and crafting and other things may be tweaked.
After playing this game, never again will I goto a level based system. I love it too much. Being able to head in any direction with any clan mate. Being in a clan you effectively remove the need for a LFG channel. That's how good it is. The level system is flawed. You grind your way to max level, gear up and have it all taken away with a patch or expansion and you have to do it all again.
For me, games now have to be about more than gear and levels. I want to build cities and ships. I want to conquer cities. I want to climb that mountain that isn't an invisible wall. I want the fear of losing everything to go along with the exhileration of getting everything. Darkfall offers all of this. It isn't perfect but it is the best game out there by a longshot.
You grind your way to max skill in Darkfall.
BTW. Your name reeks of fanboism and, really, if you want some good discussion I'd suggest creating a new username (again).
He who keeps his cool best wins.
I can appreciate your point, but to be honest I am beyond surprised that people thought this game would be something more than 100% pvp. Ever since I heard of it and ever since I saw the reaction of the community I knew it would be more of a mmo fps pvp game. It just seemed so blatantly obvious.

At least UO has always had the impression of being a 'fair game'. I can't tell you how many times I sat naked, cold and dead at the bottom of a dungeon because of a PK that out did me.
The thing is though, in that game the agressor took some type of penality for their actions. Darkfall's alignment system is another half assed implementation that screams incomplete and amature.
I can't support a company that doesn't really believe in fair play. Their anti macro system is non existient.....that sends a message to me. Yes, they have a macroing problem now but where the hell did they catch this in their design ?
I'm kinda wandering right now but the point is there is no balance in this game, there is no sense of fair play. Its like I said initially, one big open gank fest that they expect me to pay for each month.
As for the community, it speaks for itself, just look at the first 3 pages of the DFO general discussion forums at any given time.

I am a fan. Not blind, but a huge fan. As to your statement: You grind your way to max skill in Darkfall...that is just wrong. You can, but then you just have the WoW mindset. It's instilled into you. Having max skill does not make you a god. Having max skill means nothing if you swing your weapon at me and you miss.
AV has had over a month to say what will be improved. They have released one set of patch notes saying this and that was 'tweaked'.
In terms of how I view lvl based games: Playing Darkfall has had the opposite effect on me. I have come to a better appreciation of the level of polish that comes with a mmorpg. The first time I logged back into Vanguard after playing DF the logon server went down 5 minutes later. 2 minutes later SOE had an outage notification.
Has anyone read the posts about spells and skills scaling like shit? They didnt think we needed modern chat systems? /msg insanelylongElvishSoundingFirstName with insanelyLongLastName hi
the skills aren't anywhere near tuned, the itemization is crap amd there's nothing on the radar i see except clan fixes.
I have also come to realize exactly why FPS twitch play may not be suitable in a mmo for me. All of a sudden ping is an issue. Playing a character who swings a sword in Darkfall is not all its cracked up to be let me tell you......its just a click fest. I think I'd take targeted MMO style over the twitch play just to sav emy wrists i swear!
At least with professional titles you get patch notes and some indication as to where the company is headed with the title.
Its a great experiement but I don't really consider this anywhere near a professional title atm. It feels more like a pure Indy title made by some guys in their basement........I think they're laughing at all of us.

There are only 4 levels to a skill in darkfall.

For the most part I agree with what your saying. It definitely needs to be smoothed out.
However, don't you like the lack of a tab targeting system in the fps view? You can hide when you break LOS. You can sneak up on someone using terrain and the shadows.
