We all know a huge number of WoW players are asian players. Do you know how much asian players play Aion? Aion IS the next big MMO in all places the game was released.
WoW has 5 million subscribers in Asia. Wow hasn't released numbers for a while already. This could have been changed considering how Wotlk got delayed, China has been playing the last expansion for like a year, and now they are changing publishers.
The latest numbers for Aion report 1 million subscribers. The 1M number is from China, in Korea it already has around 800k subscribers, and it's about to release in Japan and Taiwan.
WoW is still the big MMO in the places where Aion has been released. "The next big MMO" hasn't come along yet.
The next Big MMO doesn't need to unseat WoW... It just needs have high Subs, like your 300k to 500k mark. I'd Say that would make it the next big MMO.
Face it WoW is the 1st and only MMO that has got or will get 11 million subs.... No MMO after it will get that high, just won't happen. I just played Aion for about 10-15 minutes. It's a very pretty game.... and I mean very very pretty.
Hate the control style... The right click on target and you automaticly run over and attack. Never cared for that style, but I'm not going to let that ruin the game for me. I still think it going to do well, here in the US, but SW:TOR is going to do better.
Pardon, but it is VERY hard for me to believe you actually played Aion after comments like these. Unless you played at PAX, have a Korean retail or chinese beta account, there is no other way you played it recently. Chinese beta has long ques and you would have had to register to get in via lotto months ago. Korean retail would have required you to either use a korean players account, or purchase your own via 3rd party site ringing you up for around $60 USD. For 10-15 mins play time, I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY doubt you went through the effort to
1. Download the client
2. Apply for the lotto (and get in which, was a pain in the ass if i remeber correctly)
3. Pay for your account
4. Call up your Korean buddy and get him to give you his username and password
I should throw out there, it is calculated that Aion has already achieved 1mil, if not more, subs in Korea alone, only 5 months after release.
I should also add that contrary to what many people have stated here, Aion has little to no hype here in the US, if you were to go onto WoW trade chat and ask "Who here is going to play Aion?" You will get responses like "WTF is Aion?" "Is that a raid in the next patch?" "Never heard of it, is it a shooter?" or "GTFO scrub nobody knows or cares".( believe me, I've done it)
The only hype you get is on places where it is already talked about, where it is hyped by a vocal and actually decent sized community. NCsoft has done little to no marketing outside of Korea China and Japan.
BTW: I have a Korean retail Account
How I miss this before...
I'm playing the Chinese retail with english patch, which Synthetick had a thread on how to sign up with, before NCsoft had him pull the thread. I bought 51 units of play time (that's about 106 hours).
tho I still don't like the "right click run over and attack thing", I'm liking the game.
Here's a screenshot of my pretty little Assassin at level 10 just after she got her wings.
For the record, both click-to-move and auto-follow-on-attack can be disabled in options. I'm at work right now so I can't pinpoint the setting, but its in there for those of us who prefer fuller control. ^^

So Aion has almost two million, and WoW may have somewhere less than five million? That's still a long way to go. Wake me up when Aion doubles its subscription numbers, and has the same success in the West.
For the record, both click-to-move and auto-follow-on-attack can be disabled in options. I'm at work right now so I can't pinpoint the setting, but its in there for those of us who prefer fuller control. ^^
I found Disable click to move, but not the auto follow on attack or right click.
I do kinda like it for when flying tho. Destorying the 3 pieces for Abyss debris above the city would have been annoying otherwise.
@ Zorn, didn't AoC and War clear 500k units sold at launch? But failed to sustain the scrips due to many, many problems and straight out quality control issues such as LAG and BOREDOM?
@ Lornphoenix, Thanks for the ss, the game and your toon look great!
@ Zorn again, RoM is a horrible wow-rippoff/cashshop scam. I dropped that game like a bad habit, however after playing it through CB to launch. I thought it had promise and it was free, but I don't want to turn this into a RoM bashing session, there are threads for that.
Aion .... is that the name of a new bicycle or electricity company? Sorry you've never heard of the game before. Listen folks... BIG mmo ? If Middle Earth, Conan lore or Warhammer couldn't get a stable 300+ K subs after the initial launch, how could this game ever become big ??? (as in 500 K subs) in the EU/US??? Simple, LotrO was too cookie cutter and people expected a less linear world and progression, WAR can't be bothered with quality PvE so it can't be huge not to mention their initial bugs, Conan's PvP wasn't too great and wasn't ironed out, missing PvE content and lots of initial bugs; not acceptable in today's western market. Aion will have ALL those things under control at release. I am standing in awe every time how people can think 500.000 players would be paying 15 dollars a month just to be able to play one game.. with absolutely NO name recognition beyond the fact it is an ... mmorpg with quests.... Name recognition? Guild Wars, City of Heroes and Lineage stand for nothing? Hell, I am surprised most of these games even get 100.000 subscriptions... Bet noted ;P Take a look at RoM: a complete FREE to play game and look... it is already losing players after 2 weeks.... If all you do is read mmorpg.com I can see how you would get that impression but my server is currently more populated then it was at open beta... o.o
I will bet you 10.000 dollars Aion will not even come close to 500 K subscriptions in the west after 6 month launch.
And GW is played by about 300-400K active players (see Xfire stats) and it is .... FREE with no subscription rates.
So most people have NO idea what 500 K western subscriptions for ONE game mean today.
Proof is very clear for LOTRO, WAr and AoC.
And Aion is not even known lore.
As for ROM: just look at the DOWN trend on Xfire. FREE and losing players and UNDER PAID games like LOTRO and WAR.
In Germany ROM dropped from place 3 to 20+ on amazon.de in ONE week time. No big interest for a FREE to play game...
BTW XFire is a sample of .... 200.000 players constantly on line: believe me Aion will not even be able to have 200K players after its initial 3 months launch.
www.xfire.com shows exactly what is being played most in the west.
Compare the Wow numbers with the 5.000.000 western players of Wow and you get the picture of how many subs are in those other games.
No use to argue. Because their figures could always later be confirmed by official sub numbers of such games like Wow, Eve, War, Lotro, Aoc.
Most succesful MMO's stay around the 200K mark. The others are WAY below 100K.
200.000 PC players being sampled 24/24 hours says it all for on line games !!!!!!
In the last 3 years --- Hype ---- was always defeated by the real numbers shown by Xfire.
Perhaps a game like KOTOR could gather around 1 million players at launch and it depends just how good it will be if it can hold on to that number.
But a not well known mmorpg with NO broader name recognition at all is heading right to the SUB 200 K branche after 3 months. No doubt at all.
You want to bet me $10,000 that Aion won't hit 500,000 subs in the West in its first 6 months?
Hell, Im a cynic about this game... I see it it as yet another designed by commitee BS commercial montage of crap worn out ideas, but even I know the general mmorpg public is stupid enought to buy into that because it has nice promo movies.
@Zorndorf dude your gonna lose big time because i can see those numbers being reached. If Aion releases as smooth as it has in the other countries then i do see many people subscribing to a fun game, not everyone that plays looks for innovative gameplay, most just look for a fun and different game than what WOW, War, AoC and LotRO bring.
I will bet you 10.000 dollars Aion will not even come close to 500 K subscriptions in the west after 6 month launch. And GW is played by about 300-400K active players (see Xfire stats) and it is .... You should be very thankful that most people find you too laughable to even consider taking you up on that bet, becuase otherwise you'd be sitting around wondering why you bet six months worth of flipping your fries in an eRage tantrum on the intarweb.
I say this not because I feel either way on the 500k number but on your horribly flawed basis for your position.

If they fix Chanter, Ranger, and Spirit Master maybe I'll give it another try but from what I saw in the chinese beta, Aion isn't the game for me.
I agree that the classes need work, but lets think back to almost every other MMO at its launch.
Melee DPS and Tanks are over powered, utility and the unusual DPS classes are under powered.
Oh and normally the economy is out of whack, but I'm not sure if that is true for Aion.
Just sayin, I'm thinking they will have a lot of these issues balanced out a lot better by the time of US release, keep in mind Chinese beta didn't have the most up to date version either.
If they fix Chanter, Ranger, and Spirit Master maybe I'll give it another try but from what I saw in the chinese beta, Aion isn't the game for me.
There is nothing wrong with the Spiritmaster... and that comes from someone that plays high lv SM on china server.
Made my 2th Spiritmaster now, old one was around lv 35 new one i roled on region 2 on the oposite side is doing very good to.
I would say most of the ppl say SMs are Op rather than broken.... l2p m8. Sm is one of few clases if not the only one that can solo elites easy, pvp is tricky but what is not ? I certianly cant say that this class is broken neither chinise SMs i was talking with.
Right now class that suffers most in endgame 1 on 1 pvp is gladiator. Free kill. Group fights are a difrent story tho.
Get your facts straight before you say something lol.
PS: Economy is doing fine in Aion, definitly beter than most mmos at start. There is decent amount of items wanted on the AH and prety much everything that is not misc crapp to vendor can be sold decently at the AH. Aion is good mmo for crafters to. Maybe not the most complicated system but one that promotes dedicated crafters in meny ways.
As for beta, it was 0.95 ver retial now is 1.0 next patch is 1.1 there is extensive info about it on meny sites so i wont go into details and i think korean ver got 1.2ver. By the time it hits western stores we will have 1.3 or even 1.4 ver. I would not worry much about it. Aion is doing much beter at the start than most mmos did in the past. Wich is actualy quite a suprize.

What about chanter? I've not played one myself only been on my templar... I've heard that Chanter is very broken right now T.T
I mean some of the specifics of his post were fuzzy but the point is kinda accurate, the game does need balancing but I don't think its nearly as bad as when WoW released.
No. I'd say that your typical WoW-player got no idea of, and find no interest in, what other MMORPGs are being made: they already got WoW, and they think it's perfect, why should they care? Aion may attract a lot of players but beating WoW - no. I'd also like to point out that Guild War and CoH/CoV are all successful, just not as successful as WoW.
wow fans are like zombies. They wont leave -- because they cant leave. It really is that simple.
If they fix Chanter, Ranger, and Spirit Master maybe I'll give it another try but from what I saw in the chinese beta, Aion isn't the game for me.

Im afraid chanter is doing so so in endgame. Problem is he is to big of a hybrid atm. Yes he can stay alive almost as good as cleric but he doont have the offensive power or enough tricks in his hat to take the enemy down in usualy open pvp fights.
I would not worry to much tho, from what i heard meny changes and balance updates come in future patches, still wating for 1.1 and 1.2 from Korea to be applyed ti china servers.
1 Thing is sure, Aion would definietly won award for most polished mmo at the retial. Stelar performance, all basic mechanics, grand art, great storyline, tons of content, interesting crafting if not in some ways innovative, flying combat wich adds another dimention to the pvp and more. To make thing more interesting there is so much more to come on the horizon.
What is relay impresive is ITEMIZATION! Yes simple but very much forgotten thing most of the time when games are just relised. In aion you got tons of armor sets, every armor looks unique there are not 3 type of armor sets till max lv like in most mmos this days, ppl dont look like clones. After lv 30 you can use special merchant to customize your look anyway you want. You have difrent sets every 2-3 lv + special items from quests or dungeons. Tons of fluff content.
Most interesting thing is that lots of nice features are showing only after you get to cerian lv and they are introduced as you gain levelsm like access to abbys at lv 25 and fights past the rifts, lv 30 customization merchant etc.
Remeber this game was just relised in asia not even here and it have more implemented and WORKING prety well than most recent mmo hits after 1-2 years after they got relised. Sad but true. Thats the reality.
Personally I think it will do well in the West. It will be the next 'big' MMO. Certainly not the 'WoW-Killer' though.
I'm hoping for L2 (at launch) levels of success, if not more. It is a tried, tested product and has proven VERY successful in the East. A lot of westerners have certainly given this game a positive review after playing in Eastern betas. Additionally the product already has PLENTY of content available.
Its about as Fresh as current gen MMOs are going to get and offers unparallelled customisation. This is the only MMO in the near future I'm looking forward to.
Currently waiting for the MMO industry to put out something good.
Well did you ever think that there might be so much more ppl that dont care about xfire at all ? I dont.
No one in my guild either. No one in any guild i played or made ever used xfire. And i play mmos for over 15 years.
Now think again before you say something... maybe most ppl that use xfire just dont play mmo...
PS: Aion got over 1mil subs in china in 3 days. By now its probably twice as much. Think again realy realy hard. This game did not even hit the stores in the world. Its only China.

Chanter with Daumnir instance gear= epic
Been seeing them rock sorcerers and assassins like a knife through butter, the attack speed bonuses are really good for chanters.
I haven't really paid attention to gladiators gear, but I've seen a templar 3 hitting me, guess a gladiator with such gear could do the same.
