It is just disappointing when people say WoW started the water downing of the genre they completely forget about everquest planes of power and beyond and Asherons call 2.
yes but those games didnt catch like wild fire, hell AC2 closed down.
WoW was the one everyone noticed so its to blame.
Is it fair to blame them? probably not blizzard just wants to make money.
You can't deny the fact that WoW was the first MMO to become popular with a casual, simplistic style that would turn the genre on its ear.
IF we are going to blame other companies for the failure of other companies lack of creating a good original game then we will always have this problem in this genre, until a company takes its own responsiblity and takes risk and creates something original, then this genre will be nothing but clones.

Well this is why we have games like Eve,Ryzom and DF and upcoming games like ER, FE and MO.
These games are trying to turn the clock back, but the god damn MMO community (80% play WoW) wont give a freaking MMO a chance to actually get better over time!
If a game doesnt release with 5+ years of content like WoW they blast the hell out of the game.
This is what I mean by lack of patience.
Look at Eve do you realize Eve took like two years to be a fluid game and not some empty stuttering mess?
They don't realize that these games need a chance because they're new to the genre.
A game like DF that will probably be as good as Eve in a Year or two will probably be dead by then because of impatient players in teh genre.

It's not enough to say people want a game like DF. They have to back it up with their money especially when it isn't a mainstream game. Money talks and if people really want the devs to start going their way they have to back it up with cash. If they are unwilling to back those games even if they are crap, then expect the devs to turn away from you.

Sandbox games take time to evolve. Alliances need to be formed and rules need to be laid down.
Ever see a Sov map from Eve? it didnt evolve into that overnight. Darkfall right now is crap I agree, but I also though Eve was crap back in '04.
I do agree Ryzom failed with the adverts but it is running today as a P2p game hell its probably one of the best games due to an incredibly tight knit community that I've ever played.
These player Driven games need time for the actual players to set the rules, develop the market in time DF will be good if players will support it, Ryzom is getting better and better and is a complete throw back to the old days and Eve is more popular then WAR.
I have no excuse for the themeparks that have been released in the last four years however, four years is long enough to get your shit together. AoC and WAR are improving but imo not fast enough.
I'd have to go with WAR I think , I was seriously stoked about this game and all the hype that surrounded it , so when it was finally released I dont think I've ever been so dissapointed over a game before. Was also dissapointed in Vanguard at launch but I checked back recently and its a totally different game now than it was at launch.
That being said I will still keep one eye on WAR to see what happens ... I have one thing to thank WAR for though, it did get me seriously interested in PVP , so I probably would not now be playing Darkfall and enjoying it so much if it was'nt for WAR.
Seriously stop blaming blizzard for the failures of other companies.
DAOC, EQ2, City of Heroes, SWG, etc all had lots of solo player content and could go from start to end with solo play. Everything about mmos was heading in that direction. Even in everquest people would just buy more computers and accounts so they could "solo" by playing all the characters in their small group. The trend was already well underway.
Now don't blame blizzard because they delivered a better product for what the market was seeking and other companies failed to see what players wanted.
As for blaming wow for dumbing down the genre, please! There have been numerous games that tried to do something different. Dark and light, Warhammer, Conan, Vanguard, Tabula Rasa, Darkfall, star wars nge, etc. They all had massive problems on release. The fault isn't for players "giving them time to get better" the failure is that companies keep releasing half finished games and expecting money from people for them.
I bet you would not talk the same way if you bought a new car that was in the same condition dark and light was in. What would you say "give the car company time, they will fix it and make it a good car someday". No you would demand your money back or something similar. There is no reason any of those companies could not have delivered a decent game with gameplay that was aimed at non-casual players, but they didn't do a good job on that did they?
They already had their chance to make a good game. People should not be expected to pay $50 for a game and then $15 a month so that a game has a chance to someday maybe become good. That is just idiotic.

It's a tie for me between Vanguard and Age of Conan.
Both of those games were immense dissappointments for me. If someone offered a college class on how to run or manage an mmorpg I swear Funcom should be used to show students how not to run or manage an mmo. That company had their heads so far up their asses when it came to AoC it was amazing.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

Every game releases unfinished and needing time to fill out months after release.

AoC, VG, WAR all came out with much hype, mostly community built. I was not suprised at all when I first logged on to these games, I had tried them and cut through the hype. All 3 are doing just fine now despite nay sayers. they have healthy populations to substain and grow a MMO. Some ppl like them, some don't. Some people even tried them before coming to conclusions, and even retried them later in release to see how they have grown. If you are still making judgments based on release from a game that is over 6 mo old, well I am sorry. Be thankful that your parents held out on judging your ugly ass till ya grew a lil bit. If you play a MMO on release then gripe, either you are a noob, or you can not learn from experiance. If I try a game at release ( i don't) and it is buggy, I know that it will be a different game in 3 months, 6 months, a year. All you that take snap shot of release and hold that as your judgement must have not played MMO's long, or just like being pig headed. I would recomend ya'll try these hyped games again, and maybe they have some thing you are looking for now.
When the NGE was released for SWG or CC for Planetside.
When both of my fave games were ruined it broke my heart. I was so close to both of these mmorpgs and I thought they were amazing and just so sad when they were ruined. I've been looking for something since 2005 and still havn't found anything.
world of warcraft let me down the hardest when they made it into the retarded mess it is now starting back right before burning crusade, pvp ranks GONE (i had a high warlord). challenging 40 man raiding GONE they made it 24 person cake walk mode and all the new level 61 greens were vastly superior in stats to your 60 epic raid set. blizzard knows how to fuck a game up like no other.
This... this is exactly what popped into my head when i saw this thread.
WoW is a HUGE let down ... i started at launch, and played for 4 years...WAY too long to what the game became.
I've said it before, I'll say it again. D&D Online. Turbine got their hands on a license with nearly limitless possiblities. Not only did they choose to not go with the more popular Forgotten Realms as the game's setting, but the entire game is half-assed. No not even half-assed, quarter-assed is more like it. The game has a measly number of pre-made classes and is even missing some of the core races of D&D. That isn't D&D, that's just a sorry attempt at a WoW clone in my opinion.

Turbine was forced to use the campaign setting by Wizards, which restricted classes and races. Secondly, if you are calling DDO a WoW clone, then you never played DDO, not even at launch, because it is NOTHING like a WoW clone.

Have to agree. DDO has plenty of problems, but being a WoW clone isn't anywhere close to being one of them. Hell, last time I tried it, it could have used a larger dose of solo-friendliness.

This... this is exactly what popped into my head when i saw this thread.
Wish online. Promised a ton of new stuff that would open up the genre, add new ideas and such. But died like 2 weeks into CB.

Peace is a lie, there is only passion.
Through passion, I gain strength.
Through strength, I gain power.
Through power, I gain victory.
Through victory, my chains are broken.
The Force shall free me.
99.9% of all MMORPG's released are nothing less than a complete letdown...
But if I had to pick just one, I'd have to go with the choice to NOT go with 40K when producing the Warhammer MMO.
I'll second Wish due to cancellation, and also Ultima X: Odyssey, due to cancellation.
