-wonders how many million of those subs are gold farmers-
It's funny that you mentioned the gold farmers because, at least on Aion-CN, gold farmer spam is everywhere. I'm just trying to figure out if they are practicing their spam skills for the US/EU release. I mean most of the spam is in English.
So are the bots, personal shops, hackers and kill stealing.

they are not practising, they know which servers have the larger majority of NA/EU players and want to sell to them.

So every server I tried had the larger majority of NA/EU players?
Either way, their reasoning for gold selling spam doesn't matter to me. What does matter is the simple fact that if the problems I mentioned are not taken care of by NCSoft, the game will flop in the west.

Yes there are people spamming to sell gold, but I don't think there is anyone buying. Really is no reason to in AION, it's not really a gold based game like WoW is. Gold is very easy to come by. The game is based around lore and fun play, not accumilating things.

i played korea and i saw a lot of botter, my friends playing in chine and same problem. i hope nc soft can salve this problem. if not they can lost a lot of player. Aion realy good game. i am waiting more then 1,5 years. i hope we can play clear game. not importent playing population for me. i want just no botter, no dmg and speed hacker ( all in korean and chinesee version )
lol... i'm impressed, there is alot of talk in this discussion about "aion has this" and "aion has that" but how many of you have actually played the game and know exactly what aion does and doesnt have. i've been playing in CN retail and aion has some good features and bad features like every other MMO..
1. There is a fair few quests in the game world, but honestly, there is a massive grind for a couple of levels at a time because quests run out and you'll be too low to aquire the next set of quests.. so it's grind time.
2. The graphics are pretty awesome and you dont need an amazing system to run it on max
3. There is alot of gold farming / botting going on, but it's too be expected in any MMO really
4. Does it have the potential to surpass WoW... maybe, but end game is mainly PvP there isnt really any high end raids.. raids arent instanced so if the raid boss is killed, too bad you miss out, all high end items are through PvP bought / world EQ is pretty average
5. The game aint meant for solo play, no class really solos easily and it is a very group oriented game
6. the guild i game with is all in agreance that when US retail comes out, the quickest way to level is in groups of 5 grinding out, because questing is a very slow and tedious part of the game
7. flight is ok, gliding is fun, flight combat works well for what it is
8. network code probably needs some improvment as the game is fairly laggy to play "hopefully fixed by US release"
all in all it's not a bad MMO it's a good game, well designed alot of excellent features in it, will it kill WoW more then likely not, because apparently if it's made for a "casual" gamer, the eastern and western definition of "casual" is a very different thing, playing 2 weeks solid, might get you to level 25 - 30, end game, if you want decent EQ you're spending alot of time in the abyss accumulating points for EQ and honestly, it aint designed for a "casual" gamer. This is NOT the type of game you can dedicate 10 - 20 hours a week too and expect todo well, this game requires alot of time if you want to succeed.
this being said, my advice to everyone, is google the aion CN release tutorial to play it and try it out for yourselves, that all in all is the easiest way to see what kinda game it is, there is an english patch for the client that is pretty good, it shows you how to make an account, buy game time n everthing... 150 play hours costs about $9 US...

dont judge till you try something!
Having played the CN version of the game, I never ONCE had to grind levels , I just kept questing, so your sir havent played the game or played it completely the wrong way, i have 2 characters both around lvl 35 first was made completely solo all the way up, second was made when friends joined the server and I decided to start over with them, while you wont be able to solo some of the krall quests earlier on, you can once your toon evolves a bit more.
I could finish my krall group solo at level 25 by playing smart , using my skills efficiently and making as smaller pulls as possible, when I had to kill Kraka the Krall boss I was kindly invited by one of the CN groups doing it, so no problem there as well, with a group you can start doing krall at lvl 19.
While I agree that there a bit of a botting problem the game is no where near the "Korean Style Grind Game" your trying to make it be, laggy game, what did you expect if you did play it, you either did on CN or KR version its on the other side of the world, it does not need a fix, the server will be moved closer to you, ever wondered why games like WoW have EU and NA servers? Yes thats it, its because of latency.

lol sorry to dissapoint you, i'm from australia, my pings to several chinese located servers are around 200 - 300ms, Aion shouldnt be much higher but i get a fair amount more lag, and yes i do play it on central chinese server real jucleus.
There is many ways to fast track levels actually.. at level 9 if you go straight to your ascension quest with 0% exp into level 9 you automatically get fasttracked to level 10 by just doing that mini chain.
and as for "played" i continue to play, you're one exception. the majority of chinese i have grouped with arent even doing quests, rather running around killing random mobs for exp till level. i know about 30 people who play on the guild i'm in on the server who all agree there is alot of grinding. and if you really think the game isnt designed for group play.. what are you plain ignoring the bonuses on exp n such you get for being in a group. grouping is by far the most effective way to play the game.
level 1 - 10 straight forward, get to level 9 do ascension quest your level 10.. finish off quests in the starting area, you might get about half way to level 11... or just over depending how you've done them. After you finish in the newbie zone you'll head over to "pandemonium" and do your introduction.. then basically get sent over to altgard
level 10 - 20 generally you get enough quests to get you to about level 13 - 14. but at that point if you're new to the game or dont know the areas very well, you're gonna find yourself more then likely grinding till 15 to get the next lot of quests... from there you'll find you start getting alot more "group" quests with 4 or 5 dot mobs (for those of you who are unaware of the dot system, each mob is ranked by dots 1 dot trash mob, 2 dot slightly higher upto 5 dots.. then you get colored dots and for elites there status bar turns into a sword looking thing after you target them) now getting closer to level 20, from about 17ish onwards you pretty much ONLY start getting group quests... around now you can either try going over to morheim where the quests start at around 20... or get groups and do the group qests.. or grind out some levels
initial Morheim quests will generally take you to around 22, grind out about 2 levels for the next group of quests you can get and keep going..
the point is that, although you might not have had to grind at all.... most people will have to and there is alot of grinding that can be done, generally you'll hit a level have no quests around till the next level coming, grind out a level and keep going
not to mention you dont wanna die, because you lose exp for dying and you have to pay kinah (the gold of the world) to get some of your exp back, the amount of kinah you pay increases with each level...
now considering you completely misunderstood or just chose to ignore the point of my post. i'll just word it for you again..
EVERY MMO has GOOD and BAD points. Aion for most people will require a fair amount of grinding, not to mention i have no idea if you made elyos or asmodian, for anyone who has played WoW wether you want to admit it or not, alliance levels quicker then horde, i dont know if it's quest chains, the way they're structed, exp.. but alliance is alot quicker to level.
for all i know elyos might level faster or have better quest structure then asmodian which i have been playing, so next time dont u se my post to try and flame me... makes you look arrogant.
I just don't see it. The majority of subs are going to stay in Asia, this game won't hold 250k subs in the US.
That absolutely did not contribute at all to the discussion
Although, I have to say I agree - Aion is a bit too 'grindy' for Western gamers, so will hit max 2 mil amongst EU/USA combined
Divide that estimate by 10 and you might be nearer the mark. MMO's in the west seem to hit a plateau around 300-400k unless they go in to the stratesphere like WoW.
Guild Wars was the only one that broke that rule AFAIK.
I hope Aion does well personally, and I'll probably buy it, I but I don't think it will be the West's next 1mill+ selling MMO. Too Korean, too long to level cap, not following the familiar fantasy profile that everyone knows.

FFXI doesn't count because it's a worldwide game right? It's got a little over 2 million subscribers.
Anyways. I've been playing the CN versiona from the eastern US and I can't say I've run in to too many lag problems. Unlike the AUS guy, I really am on the other side of the world. There's other things that can cause lag though (like bad routing or a crappy ISP).
Grind? What grind? I just made a gladiator last week (well, warrior first) and leveled it to 17 without a single instant of being without a quest. In fact, I still have a few I need to do that I just haven't gotten to.
For the people reading this, don't use a single post as evidence for and against the game. People say these same things about every other MMO too.
However, in my opinion, if you have to grind in this game you're probably doing something wrong.
again... i never said anything about the game being "bad" i currently play it and enjoy playing it, are you like trying to take something from my overview and use it out of context, as for bad ISP i got ADSL 2+ 24mb / 2mb that syncs at 19mb / 1.8mb and no other online mmo's i've played i've had any kind of lag issue with, infact the last maintenance Aion did on there chinese servers was to greatly improve the networking / hardware side of the servers because of the lag problem.
and the fact that you played to 17 and didnt have to grind, could be luck... i'm not saying it's a "massive grindfest" i said there is levels inbetween questing, where you may need to grind out a level.. maybe even half a level, but like i said you're at 17.. very shortly you're going to run into altgards group quests n you can see how fun that is...
the simple point i'm trying to make and by no means is this a bad game, i enjoy playing it i honestly do... but the honest reason WoW does so well where this may have it's downfall is "easy mode" WoW has been set to easy mode, where you can level a character to cap in no time, now with Bind on Account gear, that gives you 10% exp boosts etc... anyone who has a high level alt can cap out players in no time... and people want to be a part of the end game, why because WoW does have alot of content and end game content and they continue to add and will continue to add and improve as long as people play the game. Aion on the other hand for the casual gamer, is going to take alot of effort to get to cap.
Stop assuming i'm saying the game is bad, the game is fun... it's challenging (dont listen to the gladiator, it's what all the bots use for grinding on chinese servers) and most of all the best thing todo, try it out and make up your own mind... but dont judge something before playing it... Once again Aion IS a GOOD game and by NO means am I saying OTHERWISE. WoWkiller probably not because it is designed for the more hardcore gamer... not so much every 10yo+ with there parents credit card
and on a side note...
i've got a level 46 cleric, level 38 ranger and level 30 sorcerer... so i apparently have seen alot more of the game then you...
i'm speaking from experience, compare when you've almost hit cap

So 2 ppl already said they did not run out of quests while leveling one you said its one in a million chance the other your saying its luck wow, maybe the problem is you, maybe you just dont know where the quests are?
Again im not discussing whether you like the game or not nor do i care, just there is so much inconsistency in your arguments that it needs pointing out.

so both of you failed to mention if you made asmodian or elyos characters?
i havent played elyos, i can only talk about my experience from asmodian and there is no inconsistency in my arguments, i'm talking about my experience.. and the experience the others i have played with have had.

That's a pretty racist and stupid point of view.
It's not "Asian" companies that make great games. It's Japanese companies (like every single one you listed) that make great games.
The fact that you somehow assume Koreans and the Japanese are the same people implies you shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a computer.
I leveled 2 toons, both mages up to 32 and 43 respectively. I never ran out of quests and I did zero grinding. I just did quests and I also did no PVP on the 43 level toon. Plenty of quests. This by the way is with the 1.0 Chinese version. The 1.2 Korean version supposedly adds a bunch more quests.
By the way the 32 level toon I did a alot of PVP with and I also did a lot of collecting. I even managed to level 2 levels just by collecting things just to do it (I actually did about 2 and a half levels collecting but I ended up killing a few mobs I aggroed so I had to subtract out their XP. I also did a bunch of repeatable quests with the level 32 toon.

ok hardcore fanboys... just so we're clear... i wasnt flaming the game. i wasnt saying it's bad. i was giving an unbiased review on my experiences and others i have played with experiences in the game... one again being neglected was the question i have already asked twice
so here it is again
On the chinese server you play on. Did you play as Elyos or Asmodian.
after the discussion last night, i decided to go and make an Elyos toon... and for all those people playing chinese server Elyos has a more structed quest pattern then Asmodian i have found.
and if the korean 1.2 patch adds more quests, thats great, hopefully they're too Asmodian to balance out the amount of quests a little
well there you go, our experience has been from an asmodian perspective.. and comparing it to WoW where alliance is quicker to level then horde, i dare say that is where the "inconsistencies" arise
i'm sure they say that about WoW aswell, but alliance is significantly quicker to level
i've played both sides now and knowing nothing about the elyos areas, i managed to get to level 13 quicker then i did with my asmodian... you can say what you want.. but plain and simple, thats been mine and friends experience in the game.
No, I have never played Chinese Aion, haven't ever even considered getting it..... what use could I possilby have when i have Korean Aion?
I too played Asmodian. I havent gotten any characters above 22 yet since I want to save all those expieriences for English version. HOWEVER, from leveling a Gladiator, a Spiritmaster and a Ranger, i have found there to be little grind. In fact, the only grind I had was as a scout, i found that the abilities I had made it difficult to solo level 6-9 quests and I spent the majority of those levels grinding mobs because i couldnt kill the more powerful ones for the quests and I dont speak Korean so i couldnt group.
I suppose your wondering "Well if you can't speak Korean, how the hell do you do ANY quests whatsoever?!" The answer is simple. Aion has an amazingly streamlined and easy to use quest system. In addition to organizing your quest list in an accessable and simple format, it also allows you to pinpoint areas on the map for your specific quest utilizing button links-IE... If your quest is to gather baskets of fruit, click the word for 'baskets of fruit" in the quest description and it will give you a pinpoint location to where you can find said baskets, not only that but you can also use the same system to locate the original quest giver. I was able to complete 90% of the quests without understanding a word of Korean.
Now, one thing that may skew my view on the grind, is that I found the combat to be so entertaining that I would literally kill mobs just for fun as I moved on to quest objectives.
It's very exciting to get to your skill level and play around with your exciting new abilities. I'm really looking forward to english to see what a rank 2 fire elemental is like.
As for endgame, i never got to it, but it looks very promising. Take a look at this
More quests? As if there weren't enough already.... lol.
NCsoft has already released two MASSIVE patches for the game(1.1 and 1.2), each with new features including dungeons, more armor, customization options and new zones. I would also like to note, that there is a new patch(smaller one, usually with balancing issues or bug fixes) almost every week . Gotta hand it to NCsoft for trying.
There are several higher level dungeons in place already, including the Fire Temple and Secret Laboratory, asside from which i know there are more, but Pez doesnt care so much for PvE so he hasnt paid them much attention.
I think that if any game has the potential to be a WoW killer, it is Aion. People here might say the art style is too asian, or anime. Truth is, that Anime is more popular in the west then you may realize, people have loved and still do love games like Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem or even Dynasty Warriors. Kids in this generation in particular, with shows like Bakugan or Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh or Digimon. I grew up with Ranma 1/2 and Pokemon as an everyday thing, and i loved them (still love Ranma).
If anything else, that style will make it MORE popular. I've actually shown it to some of my younger cousins already. After letting them play on my account for several hours their parents had to literally pry them out of my chair.
It's certainly not a game for everyone, no game can be. However, the kind of game it is, will appeal to both casual players, to hardcore PvPers and even raiders. It's wonderful graphics which although styalized are nonetheless stunning accompanied with incredible scaling means that even mediocre computers can play Aion with max graphics. Lag issues have been minimal for me even living in the US, in fact, I notice a framerate drop of maybe 2-3 when i enter Pandaemonium(capital city of the asmodians), and from what i've read and seen(youtube videos) the massive siege battles are also very doable in terms of both lag and computer reqs.
It's almost 2010, and I am just not wiling to tolerate clunky graphics while being told that "gameplay is more important than graphics". That excuse won't wash with me any more. I expect my games to have both good graphics and good gameplay. -Quote Isoke(VN boards)
i have my doubts about aion NA/EU hitting the 3.5 mil subs in a year even. my reason? population. China blows the US and EU population. And then you have the RMT's to count several thousand accounts there, and then you have the people in NA contributing to the china SUB list. I have already seen RMT sites advertising Aion gold. So to sum it all up, i dont believe the 3.5 mil subs number.
Believe what you like but China has close to 200 servers by now and I'm not sure how many Korea has.
i dont doubt they are making alot of money. i only doubt the number of real subscribers.
Real subscribers is of little relevance if you compare with other mmo's , we are talking about active and payed for accounts, thats what they are, and wether it are RMT'ers, farmers your brother or my grandma, does not matter.
WoW also has bots, farmers, multiple accounts for 1 person, etc.
Perhaps we should be more clear when we talk about these numbers, subscriptions do not equal subscribers, and these numbers are indeed subscriptions, not subscribers.
Fact is that Aion has 3,5 million Asian subscriptions vs WoW 6,5 million, it is the 1st real threat towards WoW in Asia, and now that WoW is down for more than a month, Aion might cash in their momentum.
It may not be a WoW killer, but it is the 1st serious contender. ( Subscription wise ). I am eagerly awaiting next quarterly results from NCSoft and also the new numbers from WoW after the downtime.

What I find amazing is that the game isn't even out a year I believe and it has more subs than probably LOTRO, AOC and Warhammer combined and Aion still has to release in Taiwan,NA/EU and Australia I believe.
This is exactly what I am saying. I think you can combine the subs of every western mmo other than WoW and still wont come up with 3.5 Million.
Thats a bit over the top, but I get your point

It's funny that you mentioned the gold farmers because, at least on Aion-CN, gold farmer spam is everywhere. I'm just trying to figure out if they are practicing their spam skills for the US/EU release. I mean most of the spam is in English.
So are the bots, personal shops, hackers and kill stealing.

Aion for most people will require a fair amount of grinding, not to mention i have no idea if you made elyos or asmodian, for anyone who has played WoW wether you want to admit it or not, alliance levels quicker then horde, i dont know if it's quest chains, the way they're structed, exp.. but alliance is alot quicker to level.
for all i know elyos might level faster or have better quest structure then asmodian which i have been playing, so next time dont u se my post to try and flame me... makes you look arrogant.
again.. test a game before you judge it!

You can walk the walk but can you talk the talk?
Which Final Fantasy Character Are You?
Final Fantasy 7
again... i never said anything about the game being "bad" i currently play it and enjoy playing it, are you like trying to take something from my overview and use it out of context, as for bad ISP i got ADSL 2+ 24mb / 2mb that syncs at 19mb / 1.8mb and no other online mmo's i've played i've had any kind of lag issue with, infact the last maintenance Aion did on there chinese servers was to greatly improve the networking / hardware side of the servers because of the lag problem.
and the fact that you played to 17 and didnt have to grind, could be luck... i'm not saying it's a "massive grindfest" i said there is levels inbetween questing, where you may need to grind out a level.. maybe even half a level, but like i said you're at 17.. very shortly you're going to run into altgards group quests n you can see how fun that is...
the simple point i'm trying to make and by no means is this a bad game, i enjoy playing it i honestly do... but the honest reason WoW does so well where this may have it's downfall is "easy mode" WoW has been set to easy mode, where you can level a character to cap in no time, now with Bind on Account gear, that gives you 10% exp boosts etc... anyone who has a high level alt can cap out players in no time... and people want to be a part of the end game, why because WoW does have alot of content and end game content and they continue to add and will continue to add and improve as long as people play the game.
Again im not discussing whether you like the game or not nor do i care, just there is so much inconsistency in your arguments that it needs pointing out.

i havent played elyos, i can only talk about my experience from asmodian and there is no inconsistency in my arguments, i'm talking about my experience.. and the experience the others i have played with have had.

Did you play as Elyos or Asmodian.
after the discussion last night, i decided to go and make an Elyos toon... and for all those people playing chinese server Elyos has a more structed quest pattern then Asmodian i have found.
and if the korean 1.2 patch adds more quests, thats great, hopefully they're too Asmodian to balance out the amount of quests a little
Elyos
I would never play Asmodian. Asmodian's mothers are hampsters and their fathers smell like elderberries.

well there you go, our experience has been from an asmodian perspective.. and comparing it to WoW where alliance is quicker to level then horde, i dare say that is where the "inconsistencies" arise
The two sides both have equal experience from quests. They each have a counterpart of the same quest so no side is easier to level then the other.
i'm sure they say that about WoW aswell, but alliance is significantly quicker to level
i've played both sides now and knowing nothing about the elyos areas, i managed to get to level 13 quicker then i did with my asmodian... you can say what you want.. but plain and simple, thats been mine and friends experience in the game.

PvP Dungeons? WTF SICK PWNAGE BUTTRAPE SPAGGHETTI!!
