Space Invaders! The only game to ever cause an international crisis by causing a Yen shortage in Japan! Almost all of the country's currency was in Space Invaders machine's coin boxes. They actually had to call an emergency meeting in Tokyo to print more Yen as the shortage was affecting world markets. Now that's legendary!
Gawd, I think I am gonna install some emulators and virtual machines now ...

But no mater what, some KEWL DEWD will come in here and say any game that most people agree on sucks badly, just because he is that kewl dewd. And lord knows there are a lot of them on this forum.
While I love Bubble Bobble I don't think it was that popular.
Another old school NES game I'd like to throw out there that everybody loves for its extreme difficulty... Ghosts 'n Goblins.

A little experiment I want to conduct...I believe that there isn't a game out there that everyone can unanimously agree that was good or half way decent with out some player claiming that it sucked.
Just noticed this thread - been playing not blogging. I doubt there is such a game, not every game fills everyone's list of desires. Some like grouping games, some solo oriented some like sandbox some themepark, etc. There will always be someone who doesn't like each specific game. I hated WoW for example, easily the most popular of games. Many hated Age of Conan - I played the trial and didn't hate it, it just left me feeling bleh so i did not subscribe. You can't please all the people all the time and in MMO's you don't seem to be able to please all of the people ANY of the time.
MMORPGs no - people play them too long, get burned out and forget what they liked about them in the first place so there's always haters even if everyone that played liked it for the first 50-250 hours. But even then people will flake out early for things like "crappy toons" or "killing 20 rats is boring" or "damn I ran into a bug, bye!". That said, it's hard to hate CoH back in its heyday - for the first 20-30 levels anyways - that game was and in some ways still is quite ahead of its time.

Diablo 2. Good luck disputing that game on its own merits.

I dont think you'll get people to agree on an MMORPG, but thats a nice thing about the genre.
You got the people who love EQ/UO/DAOC then the WOW children.
Single player game: whole Myst serie (with Riven at the top). Absolutely awesome.

What's wrong with you people?
Half Life and HL2 were great games
MMO's are much tougher, always folks who love/hate them for various reasons based on their gameplay.

FF VII. That has to be the greatest game EVER.
Though the Ghosts 'n Goblins series is also bad-ass, both in fun gameplay and how difficult it was.
Edit Part: I forgot to mention this. The Armored Core series is the best robot fighting action game series of all.
DIABLO 2: LORD OF DESTRUCTION!!! sorry but no one can top that....
