Would you play a MMO with these Graphics?

JamesPJamesP Member UncommonPosts: 595

Back the start of the year I created a thread showing off some screenshots from a MMO I was making using Multiverse. Well now I am making my own engine for my MMO and I was wondering what people thought of the graphics so far. Please remember this engine is still being created and some of the models are just being used for testing such as the trees.

No thanks. It looks like a mix of Doom 1 and Darkfall. I mean, at least use the same texture details on all things so you get something homogenized. It looks way to weird with the high res texture on walls/ground and then the paint brushed tree/PC.

If the game is solid, I would definitely play it.  Not everyone will feel that way, just look at those who trashed Fallen Earth because of graphics.

Can you tell me a little more about the game?

Thanks for your reply. Like I said I haven't even started working on the MMO yet. So far I am just creating the engine and a little demo for the engine. The ninja model is not even close to what the player character models will look like since that depends on the type of game I decide to make using the engine. Also the trees I know suck. I wanted to add something in for trees but couldn't find any decent 3D tree models so I had those from a demo I had downloaded so I threw those in just for testing.

As much as I hate to admit it, that would be pretty awesome.

Is there a reason yo u're making your own 3d engine?  I would think there are plenty of engines out there that you could use, which would let you focus on the game, story, mechanics, contents etc.  Are you working alone?

If the game made me feel immersed and kept to a point where I couldn't wait till I could play again (like EQ once did) then yes, I would absolutely play with those graphics. But again, the game play would have to be pretty stellar. But that goes for just about any game, good graphics or not.

You made this? Nice work there m8. Gameplay and story are the most important things to me in an mmo, graphics are secondry. If its a good game I would play it.

i dont think it looks bad at all, considering the circumstances. i think you should keep up the good work, with the right game mechanics anything is possble. good luck mate!

I would give it a try, i don't base games on graphics because my computer isnt the best and i prefer a toned down look for smooth game play anyway. As long as it is fun and keeps me interested i would be down to try it.

if the gameplay is smooth and u have interesting, or at least, well done features why not? =D

    now: GW2 (11 80s).
    Dark Souls 2.
    future: Mount&Blade 2 BannerLord.

Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

You asked ,so i have to be honest,no i would not. There is a fine line between graphics and game play, you still need decent graphics.I would say a perfect example is FFXI,low poly graphics but with enough detail and effort ,it can still be playable.

Heck outside of the normal stuff we see in games, there is not that much difference.I doubt that even 1% of gamers pay attention to shadows and lighting effects.I doubt any care if shaders are used at all.

I do like hi res textures though, and a game world needs lots of detail.I do believe in zones,to break up the loading content.

For myself player animation is big,as well as mechanics,i care little of pre customization, because after you put the gear on,that part became a waste of time.Perhaps customization of the face and hair is about all that really matters.I point again to FFXI,that game was fine with it's 6 pre rendered races.

Basically,if you can pull off a game that equals FFXi's graphics,i am fine with that, anything less it starts to be painful.

    Hi,

well, making an MMO is a fairly ambitious task, I'd say. You do learn alot making your own engine of course, but the complexity of engine, networking code etc is a bit much for one person to handle if you also want to build a functioning, fun game.

    Here is a suggestion: https://www.garagegames.com/products/torque-3d/tgea

I think there is even an add-on that provides you with much of the code needed to turn the game into an MMO. If you consider the time it would take you just to get a half-way decent engine coded, I'd say it's worth the investment.

    Good luck!

Thanks every one for your replies. The reason I am making my own engine is because I have ideas but haven't found any engine that can help bring my ideas to reality. There are engines such as Big World that I would love to use but I don't have even close to the kind of budget needed for those engines. So I am stuck making my own but its been a fun experiance so far.

    The Engine uses:

    Ogre3D for rendering

Caelum for the sky (Ogre3D plugin)

    Raknet for networking

I was using Hydrax for water which is another Ogre3D plugin but had to remove it because it was killing the FPS

    OSI for input

Will be using either lua or python for scripting not sure which yet

Custom Time class for handeling time

Custom Server and Client side Weather Manager

Thats what is done or in the works at the moment.

Also if any one has a fairly high end PC I would love to have you test the client out and see what kind of FPS your getting. I am developing it on a low end PC at the moment and I am getting about 30 to 40 FPS.

The trees could use some work.  I recommend jumping into an MMORPG that fits a similar style to what you want in your game, and picking up some tricks for how they create/texture their trees.  Walk around MMORPGs and just take a ton of pictures, and it'll be a useful reference for the way they achieve their visual style.

The cathedral is great, but the way the light reflects off it in the one picture is pretty brutal.  Makes it look like reflective metal when it should be stone (ideally with bump-mapping to vary how light interacts with it.)

The ninja's shoulders just need to be smoothed to look more like cloth.  Quite polygonal at this point.

Good work overall, and don't take my criticism too harshly - it's meant to be constructive.

You gotta start somewhere, so as to if I would play a game with these graphics, I probably would if certain things are improved on.

    1. Can anti-aliasing be enabled to smooth out the edges?  That will make things look 100x better.

    2. Grass on the ground, it will cover up the bland ground graphics.  Not the whole ground but enough to make it look not so bland.

    3. Smoother character graphics so they don't look like AC1 character models.  I'm sure this can be improved on once you put armor on your characters.

Overall it isn't a bad start of an engine.  If you make the environment feel alive, with help of sound such as bugs and ocean waves, make the sky look more alive with changing weather, and put more npc's in there, it can be playable and enjoyable.

Anti-aliasing can be turned on or off on a per computer basis. I had it off but turning it on does improve the ninja some even though I am not to concerned with the ninja because I am only using that because its what I had available at the start of the project. The ninja will NOT be used in the MMO it is just for testing right now.

There is already Sound and the start of changing Weather. I am a huge weather person and So I will be spending alot of time trying to get the weather just right. So far on the server side the weather gets updated every hour. When the server decides what type of weather should be displayed it takes into account the current in world temp, time of day, season, and other factors. The Based on all those factors it picks a type of weather, distance, Wind Speed, Direction the storm is moving, the speed the storm is moving, and a few other things and packs it all into a structure and is sent as a packet to the client. Once the client gets the packet then it sends the structure over to the client side weather manager which will then deal with displaying the weather.

For sound there is full 3D sound. The further away you are from the sound source the softer it is and the closer you are the louder it is. Right now though I only have basic background music playing but it sets the mode pretty nicely.

James don't let anyone tell you you cannot do something and just keep on going.    By the way graphics are not everything, it is game play that matters.   There are some games out there with awesome graphics but the game play totally blows.   What 3D model maker are you using to create the objects in your game BTW?

Oh and you said you might use Python for scripting.   Good choice.  It is very flexible and easy to work with.   :)

    lol...really

This is what you came up with?

    Darkfall and Doom 1?

As to the OP's main point?

    Maybe.

There's a lot of MMO's out now using tools like that you are using. And you are on par with about 50% of them. So good job. Keep goin and it will only get better.

There are lots of people who think that the graphics have to be atleast average.

Same goes for me, if I try out a mmo or any other game and I find the graphics to be below average, then I immediately delete it from my computer.

And I wouldn´t play this game, graphics are way too low.

If the graphics become better then perhaps.

IMO you have no idea about whats an FPS too. You should also ask others "whats an FPS" ?

FPS sands for (F)irst (P)erson (P)erspective and has nothing to do with a game is sandbox or not.

On scale where 0 is absolutely horrible and 100 is graphical masterpiece I give your game -5

Thanks. Yeah I like using Python for scripting. Before I started making my own engine I was using the Torque MMO Kit and that uses Python for scripting. I loved how easy it was to script quests, items, npcs, and things with it but I found it was very limited in what it could do (The MMO Kit not Python)  so I started creating my own engine.

The Models are some models I got in a pack of models for Torque. The came with the dts models for torque and the original .obj or .fbx models. I imported the models into 3DS Max and exported them as .mesh for Ogre3D. These models will not be used in the MMO but they are just being used in this demo for testing.
