Best advice you'll ever get; don't be shy.
Not speaking or participating in the drama of your faction means you miss out on the best the game has to offer. To get an idea, check my last posts in the FoM section of this site. Should say a lot.
Also faction means a lot. Going vortex inc (shipping) or GoM (mediators) means you *will* be crafting all the time or generally bored at the lack of action. Atm there is a massive war between the cops (LED), military (FDC) and mining co-op (CMG) - vs - the drug cartel (BoS), a manufacturer (EC) and sometimes mercs (MotB), but that faction is divided into cells that can have their own politics. Mercs are fighting each other in this war, and outside of it since they can't get along either way. If you want good PvP like you never seen before, get into this beef going on currently.
I'd have to relate it's playstyle to Planetside, even though I never actually played that.

Eve or Darkfall. If you like PvP but hate losing items... Aion.
Eve is tactical in nature. Darkfall is more twitch based combat. Both require a serious amount of time to be effective in solo combat, neither require a great deal of time to be effective in team based combat.
Eve is a much more "flushed out" game. With lots of things to do. In Darkfall, PvP is pretty much the only thing it does well(and it does it very well, probably better than Eve).. but its PvE and Economy aspects are definitely improving with time. You should try both and see which you prefer.

Thats a tough one. It is definetely not Eve, even though I am currently playing it, because in that game there are more people that avoids PvP than actually engage in it. Asherons Call Darktide server used to be the best one, several years ago, but now its just too old. So I cant say really, dont think there is any MMORPG that provides a rich open world PvP experience. Maybe Darkfall, if it has improved significantly from the mess it was at release.
^^^ Don't listen to this guy. There have been battles so huge in eVE its topped over 300+ people (especially in the war for Delve). If you can't find your way into a major battle in EVE something is dead wrong....
A bunch of us answered you in this thread already concerning this same matter. I guess the advice of people that has played EVE online for years means nothing
Shadowbane. End of story. Anyone who disagrees either never played it or pussied out before really getting into it.

Wintergrasp is now instanced, and you have to queue for it to enter. Sure you can go there before there is a battle and run around by yourself. If you're lucky you might be able to gank somone farming elements, but if you don't queue for the battle (even if you are already in the zone) you don't get to play.
The most ironic thing to me is that it was turned into an instanced battle because it was so popular. A lot of players liked having open world imbalanced conflicts and Blizzard kind of ruined that in my opinion. I know it's partially because their servers can't handle over 100 players in a zone, but comon, how much money do they make every month now?
Vault-Tec analysts have concluded that the odds of worldwide nuclear armaggeddon this decade are 17,143,762... to 1.
Darkfall. Yesterday I got to participate in my first city defence, and HELL WAS IT AWESOME. Considering its not instanced, and people can attack at any time, I would consider it the best open world PvP. It also takes more tactics, even though it happens at random, you better adapt to the situation and have something up your sleeve if you want to win.
Open World PVP means you can kill anyone at anytime any place in the world. In EVE Online, you can attack anyone at anytime. Same with Darkfall.
WoW does not have this. Having just one zone doesn't qualify an MMO to have open world pvp. If this were the case, then even City of Heroes would qualify
Those that can think a bit beyond peer pressure to hate WoW answer this, why would anyone on a pvp server call wintergrasp zoned? If you recall you can enter via teleport, mount or summon. You can go there anytime and leave anytime. You can kill a person there just as easy as doing dailies in hodir areas or anywhere for that matter. This brings me to believe they either didn't play the game and if they did they played a pve server. I know Magtheridon US has pvp all over. There is plenty of people, go kill a few.
Best world pvp will go to MAG when it comes out. 256 players on a single map with tactical team play is full of win.
Lake wintergrasp is laggy. Way too Laggy. Not even fun to do. World PvP is non-existant in WoW im sorry. No one does it anymore, and im on a pvp server. You missed out on world pvp. It was thebest in Vanilla WoW. I think Cataclysm will revive the World pvp though. Since we're going back to old world.

Never played on a PvP server ? )) I see.
And Lake Wintergrasp was doing a lot of things right for the first ime in world PvP.
It is CENTRAL, it is being played MASSIVELY (as shown in my link above) and it is CONCENTRATED in the end game.
It's control also gives access to 3 unique Raid bosses that drop PvP gear (4 soon) and has an important PvP vendor.
Something that was missed in TBC.
CAT will have another open world PvP zone with more spread out objectives.
We will see. I still think open world PvP is a poor unbalanced child anyway.
Are you asking did I play on a WoW PVP Server before? Yes of course. This is how I know 100% it is not open world pvp.
War and PvP should be about conflict, not the ability to kill. Any idiot with a sword can kill something. This is what I like about WoW's PvP server. PvP is available at anytime, anywhere and anyplace. The exceptions are opposite faction's cannot harm players in their starting cities, newbie zones (1 for each race) or any area up to level 15(1 per faction). But if a player is foolish enough to attack someone of the opposite faction while within these areas, they are flagged for PvP immediately. This has brought a level of rational PvP to contested areas (anything above level 15). You still can be killed if you're below 15 and you venture in these areas, but for the most part you're good to go until you have a few levels under your belt.
And what I have seen from 5 years of on and off living on a PvP server in WoW is less trigger happy PvPing and more focused killing/killing sprees/PvPing. This is good in general because it trains players to expect to be kill, but don't think too much about it to hinder your ability to advance.
Take Red Ridge Mountains( level 15+ zone), it was known in the pass as gank central. But over the years it has morphed into a area where 1 or 2 murderous horde may show up to hassle players. Usually a defensive call goes out and players will head for the hills to hide. After that the menace will usually head to Duskwood (level 19+ zone) to finish off their gryphon master and prevent those few in town from escaping. Then others arrive to fight the threat off and send them running. This type of spontaneous PvP I can understand because it's non-scripted, random and restriction-free.
"Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas."
Isn't Wintergrasp instanced as in it can only have 100 or 200 players total? You queue to get in, and then you may get in (or not, I don't know if there are instance limits for this) for a battle every 2 or more hours (not sure on the exact hour interval), with a principle like in any other BG, being this the only one that defines territory control over Wintergrasp for the following hours (not sure if one battle is enough to switch control or it takes a few).
So it's not Open World PvP, because in it there is no cap on players participating.
The server will crash if there's 300+ or 400+ players in a same area, research a bit on athene's "events" which turned more like a way to crash servers.
And since the current focus are instances, battlegrounds and arenas, there's not many people available to world PvP with in PvP servers. Instances by nature are a counter to world PvP, especially when they concentrate most of the PvP content (if not all).
Maybe Cataclysm will fix this lack of open content (this game is screaming for non-instanced content).
