Hey guys!

Ive been checking this game out slightly.. and I see there's a lot of hype (obviously) i'm no fan of star trek (tho i liked the new movie)

My question is:

Will this be a promising game, worth pre-ordering or what? I'm waiting for SWTOR atm so gotta have to something to play in mean time.. GW /WoW/AOC is boring..

Currently playing: Fallen Earth

Wants to play: Divergence, Earthrise, Final Fantasy XIV, Star Wars: The Old Republic and The Secret World

Have played these games: Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures, Aion, Cabal Online, EverQuest II, Guild Wars, Guild Wars Factions, Guild Wars Nightfall, Hellgate: London, Lord of the Rings Online, Runescape and World of Warcraft

All I want is an mmo to play for 1 year untill SWTOR is released (now dont argue with me if your SWTOR fan, yes it will release in 2011 or like Q3 2010...) so.. I just wondering if THIS is the game.

First, learn to use your and you're correctly. Second, unless you're from the future, you have no idea if SWTOR will come out next month or next year.

Don't waste your money with fileplanet beta, you get like 3 days closed beta access. Just wait till open beta starts on Janruary 11th to decide for yourself. It runs for 2 weeks so i'm sure that will be enough time to decide whether or not the game is for you. Not everyone is guaranteed a spot in open beta but I have a feeling it won't be incredibly difficult to get in.

STO is incredibly fun, so I say yes get it. (Although I'd like to play SWTOR too)

Edit: But I should add, as always, try the game out and make up your own mind, don't just do something because others tell you to.

I've been following this game for years and recently looked at videos/trailers and information, I have a very ballsy feeling that this game won't last too long after release, I've seen it happen before and the videos only gives me enough support to that negative feeling. I like Star Trek, but I'm very hesitant in paying $50 CDN for the game.

I'd go with what some of the others are saying, save your money.

First of all, you don't need to correct me on my grammar, and secondly I told NOT to argue, so please get out of my thread.

I'd recommend buying one of the preorder boxes from a store like Best Buy which will get you into the open beta next week and allow you to try it out for a minimal cost.

    Wilberg,

You need to read your post before you type wtf are you saying. Its only common sence that Star Wars wont be ready anytime soon. Don't be a ass to the guy.

    SylarX1,

I been playing Atlantica online. Its a pretty good game, free too.

There is a thread here that shows many videos from inside Beta. I'd recomend checking those out or trying to get in BETA yourself like others have suggested. I don't think you should ever buy a game unseen just to pass time until what you REALLY want comes out. We have know idea when TOR comes out. It could be next year or 6 months from now. Personally I'm checking it out because it appeals to me, but I have no idea what you're looking for in a game so I have no idea if this will appeal to you or not.

    To the op:

I wouldn't buy/preorder it yet. Unless you are one of those who have the aim to be the first on max level: wait two weeks or so after the release. Then the worst bugs should have been killed, the lag bearable, and some reviews around to give you more opinions of people.

To the us american complaining about foreigners not speaking english 100% correctly:

    shut up.

Let's play Fallen Earth (blind, 300 episodes)

Let's play Guild Wars 2 (blind, 45 episodes)

Although I'm a fan of Star Trek, STO just looks too much like CO re-skinned to me. And after playing CO for 3-4 months and experiencing it's technical difficulties, I'm just not going to bother picking this up until maybe 6 months after it launches. I just have a funny feeling that the technical problems from CO are just going to carry over to STO and I just can't be bothered to go through all that again.

No idea what you're going to play until TOR launches, maybe Lotro to just keep you busy ?

  • DrachasorDrachasor Member Posts: 2,678

In my mind this is a game you definitely should not buy at release.  Cryptic just released an MMO with major problems only a few months ago (CO), and they touted short development times as a strength for that one (like they do with STO).  Like STO there was a good amount of hype about how great CO would be, including many previews that said it was good.  There's plenty of reason to think this game is going to be pretty shallow, unbalanced, and have poor end-game content, so say nothing of the blatantly unfinished aspects like a half-implemented Klingon faction (Feds can do everything Klingons can AND more, and a Dev explicitly stated they didn't finish the Klingons because of time).  I'm going to keep tabs on STO for the first several months, but I don't expect anything that good from it.*  It had some strengths in the concept, but they just haven't taken the proper time to develop it, and this will probably end up with the same fate as other rushed MMOs.

*I will keep tabs to test my hypothesis, of course.

I honestly don't think this is going to be a very popular game. I postulate that within 6 months after launch this game will mostly be populated by die hard trekkies. I hate to be negative but I just don't feel like Cryptic tried very hard on this one. The game looks like a reskinned and modified CO.

I love it when people start complaining about not having end game content when the game hasn't even released yet. I really don't think I would put that high on the worry list at this moment.

You really are way to jaded on the entire klingon faction thing, but I guess I can understand it if you really was planning on playing a klingon from start.

And not to knock you, but I have a better feeling now, and think the game is going to do ok for itself. Is it going to have bugs? Sure. Is it going to have balance problems? You betcha. But I will say this, I have never played an MMO that didn't have those problems at the start (including ones that took 4 or 5 years to make), and I have played a ton of them. I will say though, if your heart is set on playing klingons, I would definitely wait a few weeks or even a month or two after release, but if you want to play federation, jump right in.

Jaded on the Klingon faction thing?  Hardly.  You think it is a good or neutral sign if a two faction MMO comes out with only one faction fully implemented?  It's a BAD sign that they had to severely cut corners on the product.  The idea that because other games have bugs, balance problems, and the like means all such problems are equal is not logical.  STO looks like it will have significant balance problems (Cryptic has never been good at balance in any game for one, and with a very rushed game and beta process this is even less likely to happen).  It will likely also have significant bugs and other problems.  Not the small things a well-polished game like WoW might have had at release, but much more significant...like Champions Online (a game made by Cryptic) had at release and there are large problems that have still not been resolved in that game -- content is still one of the major ones, both while leveling and end-game, and I don't expect STO to big much different in that regard judging by what information is available.  If you want to ignore all the classic signs of a rushed game that's not going to do well, then that's your call.  I was only giving my perceptions on the matter.

MMOs are never complete on release, so to state that as a shortcoming is simply ... pre-school silliness.

Most of the people who are whining about STO being broken or inadequate or "whatever" are the same as those who whined about "LOTRO" and pointed at DDO and what a failure that was...so naturally, LOTRO will be a failure too since Turbine created both of those. Oh, and look AC2 was a complete farce and blah blah blah. Meanwhile, LOTRO has gone on to be one of the most successful MMOs ever released in North America.

Buy the game or don't. Either way, Cryptic will make their money back on this one and more. Whether they merit making their money back, that's another story. But if it's anything like CoH/CoV, then they'll do very well indeed.

    I'm optimistic.

Yeah, because WAR, CO, and other games that obviously were rushed on release didn't suffer at all and are really great and wonderful and no worse than games like WoW, FFXI, and other games that were released in a much more polished state.

FFXI was released to the NA over a YEAR.. A YEAR and HALF to be exact, after the original launch in japan.  The original launch had level exploits, gold exploits, and it was utterly horrible, almost unplayable.  It suvived out of SHEER fans of the final fantasy IP.  Thats it.  That is the only reason it survied.  Fans who loved and wanted the IP to survive in the form a mmorpg stuck around and kept it going.

I cannot fathom that you included in your polished release pretty much the worst mmorpg launch GLOBALLY.  Holy crap.  Research your debate material.

Warhammer sucked not cause the game was bad at launch.  It was because that game had the FFA pvp audience.  They failed the main target audience.  That is why it crashed and burned.

WoW was very successful because of IP AND... and... that so many were tired of playing EQ, AC, and DAoC for 3-5 years.  They wanted a new game.  EQ2's graphic engine and difficult as heck content, and total lack of soloing, is why most went to WoW which was the opposite.  WoW's team was smart, but they had an almost perfect timing of launch, not a perfect launch.
