Well, you already mentioned AOC, which as far a si remember, one of the major reasons for it not being a huge success was its technical issues which largely revolved around game performance on mid range systems. Apparently theyve fixed a lot of the issues they had at launch, but the ba dlaunch hurt thema nd they will never see the number sthat they could have seen if launch had went well.
Along with AOC, there was WAR, which had lots of performance/slowdown issues, and Vanguard which had similar issues. Neither of those games was really amazing graphically, but they were pretty good in their time, yet they still couldnt run properly on many machines.
Btw theres a huge difference between upgrading a video card on a machine thats already capable of running that vid card and probably even better, vs not having that machine to begin with. Sure that vid card might have only cost you 40 (which isnt even the cost of it new), but what about the rest of the system? You can just pick up a high end video card and plug it into any old POS. As i wa strying to say, theyre trying to appeal to not just long time gamers, who most likely do already have systems capable of handling great graphics, but also to people who might not be experienced gamers. WoW will run on just about anything, which is 1 reason its as sucesful as it is, but if WoW had the best graphics out there, do you really think as many people would be playing it if it resulted in them having no choice but to upgrade or get a new system? Its a pretty big jump from $15 a month, to having the cash handy to go spend $1k-2k on a high end gaming rig.
Bioware isnt stupid, they know not everyone is going to be playing on a gaming rig, and theyre trying to make it accesible to everyone since theyve already got a fanbase of millions based on just the IP alone, not the fact that theyre gamers. Theyve also made enough succesful games to know that while great graphics work great for some games such as single player RPGs, and especially on consoles with only 1 piece of hardware instead of a million different types of systems, thos egraphics arent the biggest draw to their games. When making an MMO, youre not looking to ONLY get someones attention with graphics, but to keep them wanting to play with great gameplay. Cryptic learned that lesson the hard way by only worrying about how many box sales they could get, rather than player retention.
No matter how amazing graphics are, the "WOW!" factor wears off after youve been playing the game for a few days/weeks, and if the core of the game under the graphics sucks, then youre going to just quit playing it once you get over the graphics. Id much rather they focus on the core mechanics and gameplay than OMGWTFWEHAVBESTGFXEVAR!!!!
Indeed AoC had huge performance issues at the beginning but many people gave it another try after they've fixed it. The second wave of people leaving was due to many other things but not the graphic performance. I never played WAR or Vanguard but like AoC, if you release an unifinshed and unpolished game you will make a lot of people angry and lose subscriptions. This alone is not an excuse for impleneting under the standard graphics. Just finish the damn game before taking peoples money and everyone can forgive minor bugs at release if they are fixed within reasonable amount of time.
Retail price of the mentioned GPU is below $100. And, yes if you have an ancient PC at home you should probably get a better mobo and CPU and not neccessarily high end rig for 1k-2k bucks. What I am talking about is a low end rig by todays standards. AoC which has nice graphics can be run on such low specs (yes including cheap mobo and CPU) and such specs today might cost $400 - $500 tops but this is really a cheap PC in 2010.
And you can't compare WOW because it is 5 years old. You shouldn't be able to run TOR so many years later on what was considered low spec back then.
see , wow was cartoony but it felt right. it's hard to explain but the swtor models are really just disgusting looking. im glad im not the only one who feels that way and yah the lightsabers , if i play the game, i'll definately roll non human and non jedi.
A lot of people have complained about the huge shoulders, tiny waists and uniform heighs of the toons. The fanbois say 'Oh this is only Alpha, it will change before launch' but they don't have any evidence for that. Far more likely, the graphics are preset and will remain constant because A/. They tie in with the look of the awful 'Clone Wars' cartoons B/. They are easy to programme and will reduce the latency of the game in operation C/. They can be easily translated into those saleable action figures for which George Lucas has a hard on.

No.. the FANS (stop bashing them by calling them names please) say that you need to stop freaking out over the little stuff when its still in alpha stage. You did happen to notice that they changed the size of the lightsabers right? Its entirely possible that they will do the same to the pc's. So chill and stop trying to scare everyone please.
I've read quite a few comments on how bad the art looks but from what I've seen I don't have a problem with it as long as it dosn't have the horrible look of SOE models I'm fine with it.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....
I get so tired of flamers and trollers that dig in over a game they've NEVER seen. They make assumptions and form overarching opinions based on a single, in production, pre beta, video. People who try to throw premature opinions out as facts are starting to really irritate me. Its like, get a clue, wait until you play the game before you start thrashing out at it. If you don't it only makes you look like a jack*ss. There was no need to take a simple, premature opinion and turn it into a flame war. This community is becoming increasingly hostile for no good reason and it's driving a lot of sensible and good natured readers away. People who want to see real information and mature discussions.

It's not the whole picture, but it's not meaningless either.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

Thus why I said overarching. The comment is not meant to preclude opinions or not accomodate them. Its to caution against being overly hostile and making large assumptions and overarching opinions, and pushing them out there like they were true, without any real game play experience behind them. You stated yourself a snap judgement from a video is not a whole picture, which is the point. Don't push it as one. Don't troll around about it. Don't flame people over it.

You're right. But, I wouldn't say that you can't trash the game before you play it. If there's something on the video that looks bad, it's not wrong to comment about it. In the best case, developers will hear and change things for the better.

True, but take it for what it is, not what it isn't. Its a tiny tidbit to peak your interest in coming back for more,. NOTHING MORE. So making a snap judgement on a tiny tidbit is uninformed, uneducated, and even a bit foolish.
Just to give you an example although its not quite the same thing...
I'm a notoriously picky eater. It used to drive my mother absolutely crazy.
When I first moved to New Orleans, hubby and I were in the French Quarter and he saw a place selling alligator sausage. Just looking at it made my skin crawl. "Gross. Disgusting. How could anyone put something like that in their mouth?"
But he kept needling me about it just a little for a while. So to please him, I said I'd take one very small bite. I did and loved it. Now I recommend that anyone that comes to New Orleans at least TRY the alligator sausage because its really really good.
I thought it would be gross because it looked gross and was made of something I considered gross. But it was good.
Same thing. Stop making early snap judgements based on early visuals when you know nothing about the game play.

But you can still say "the sausage LOOKS ugly", can't you?
That's not so important (gameplay is), but still, that's one kind of conclusion you could make out of the videos you see.
Would you care if someone said "the videos look so good!" because that's basically the same thing.
Either nobody should say anything about the videos, or both kind of comments should be tolerated.
It's just as bad when people think "wow everything about this game will be so good" after they saw a tiny tidbit.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
We saw mobs taking cover behind boxes and walls, and they appeared to be working together semi-intelligently. When encountering a group of two or three mobs, one mob would come running up to our Trooper to melee it with a sword-type weapon, and we'd have to use the Stock Strike ability to knock him back or CC him in order to focus on the mobs shooting at us from range.
Some mobs we thought we killed would pop back up again and start shooting at us. There was a subtle difference in their death animation, and eventually we figured out which ones would pop back up again. We'd finish them off quickly with a few shots, and then move on. The pathing is significantly improved, as the AI walked around objects, and we didn't see any mobs running through walls or boxes. They also intelligently used cover: a mob would run away when engaging a group, and then a bit later when you least expected it, he would sneak up behind you and attack.
After seeing graphics in the newer games like GW2 and Rift it makes me seriously wonder how anyone can look at the SW:ToR characters and think they look good. Also the combat in SW:ToR looks so underwhelming - very stagnate, very stiff and very cluncky. Compared to say WoW's or DAoC's or even AoC's(all of which are much more fluid), SW:ToR's seems almost forced - no pun intended.

Yes, it still looks ugly. But so do the character graphics for EQ2 but the game play is so good that its the only online game I've continue to play after 6 months and have now been a member of for over 5 years. In fact, I'm very excited about the Halas release in May. Test server shows housing so incredibly jaw droppingly beautiful that I intend on having all my characters move there as soon as its released. I've even stopped decorating their old houses in anticipation.
See... the problem is that we don't see comments (or rather, we see very few of them), about how good the game play is. And any time someone does post about how good it looks to be, they're chased out.
And frankly, most of the OTHER people on here NOT determined to hate the game in advance are saying "wait and see to give it a chance" NOT "its going to be the best thing since sliced bread".
Its the "wait and see" thats the reasonable attitude.

I also wouldn't dare to say "my group is the reasonable one, others are just trolls". I see every kind of poster around here.

The game is aimed at the casual audiance, they NEED 1 million+ subs to break even, pushing out older computers is a huge no no, they need to be able to please every type of customer, hense the cartoony graphics, Clone Wars is what Star Wars is all about and that is the direction Bioware needed to go to attract all the new fans, they dont relate to the older movies.

No but if people even bothered to read things from events like gdc, where groups like darth hater got hands on experience with the game, then you could judge gameplay from that. However that would of course ruin someone's talking point and we all know how ruining a talking point is a no no.

Ok.... so let me ask you this... Remember Lord of the Rings? What if you had seen Gollum during the creation process where the graphics were lacking because they weren't finished yet? So... even though the rest of the scene was good, because the gollum graphics were lacking when you saw them when they weren't completed, you decided that the whole movie was going to suck.
AND you were going around telling everyone you knew every chance you got how much the movies were going to suck even though they're some of the best series of movies ever released.
Does that sound reasonable to you? You guys are doing the exact same thing but with a game. You are seeing the partially completed game and taking it as though this is the way its going to be from start to finish for the whole thing.
Can't make the game on a console, no way... instead let's limit the game even further so that older rigs can run it... as long as we don't need to release it on a console...
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

Why would that be a good thing?
Pretty much. Alpha this, alpha that, but at the core it's not going to change.
A game can look good for an alpha, or bad for an alpha. Just because it's in an alpha doesn't mean they can get away with just about anything.
Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".
Im 32 as well and I grew up on star wars too. I think the graphics are fine. I think it will make sense when the game is live. If you want smooth battles you have to sacrifice something. I loved the combat video.
When the game comes out ,buy it. If you don't like it then do not play it anymore, like you probably have done with many games before it. Why spend even a moment of your very short life worrying about it. Is $50 worth the amount of time you have invested in worrying about it?

So... even though the rest of the scene was good, because the gollum graphics were lacking when you saw them when they weren't completed, you decided that the whole movie was going to suck.
Why would that be a good thing?
Can't make the game on a console, no way... instead let's limit the game even further so that older rigs can run it... as long as we don't need to release it on a console...
Pretty much. Alpha this, alpha that, but at the core it's not going to change.
A game can look good for an alpha, or bad for an alpha. Just because it's in an alpha doesn't mean they can get away with just about anything.
