SWTOR PVP will be no more than instanced battlegrounds scenarios. Kind of like WAR scenarios or WOW battlegrounds.
Kind of sad news for people that expected free roaming non instanced PVP/RVR world areas...
You know this how? Oh thats right they have discussed in depth just exactly how pvp will work in the game.
They announced battlegrounds are in the game and that is pretty much it , no place did they say this was it for pvp. How about we get a bit closer to launch when we have a better idea about pvp before flying off the handle. Good grief all the forums are full of this crap this morning they announce one feature out of many that are unknown and people assume that is the end.
It's exactly what I expect from WoW in space (except there will be no space too heh)
What a missed oportunity .
Star Wars has a perfect setting for full blown MMORPG with epic PVE, PVP,RvR, sandbox, theme park and everything else MMO but game designers just cant make it happen.
Sad.
I care about your gaming 'problems' and teenage anxieties, just not today.
not that im against "warzones" but there is no new link that says they are instanced or only instanced rather. Also there is no link that says its te only pvp style. There are more questions to be answered before you start making the "cats out the bag threads"

Agreed...but still hoping for some miracle (but Im giving myself few hopes..)
I think I actually spent way more time reading and theorycrafting about MMOs than playing them
The masses never played a good Open world PvP game, so the masses don't know if they would like it or not?
The success of Eve shows that the masses could like a system like that, most people that try it get hooked.
But then Bioware is not the company aiming at an open world PvP scenario game with all their story telling, i never expected anything else then announced at E3...

Oh for heaven's sake. They said nothing of the sort, and this is a really lame attempt at a thread. Lobotomist, you can do much better than this.
All that has been said is that there are war zones where PvP will occur, and that one of these zones (the first of them) will be on the planet Alderaan. This more or less ties in with the cinematic trailer released.
The reference to WAR scenarios and WoW battlegrounds is just Jon Wood at mmorpg.com (i.e. NOT Bioware) trying to make sense of the very little that Bioware revealed.

The mere existence of Battlegrounds generally means they are likely to be the primary vehicle favored by the development team and odds are good that the best rewards for PVP will be obtained through them.
More and more it seems that this team has taken the safe route, looking carefully at what was successful in WOW (and other games) and is just going to provide their own interpretation of these mechanics.
Considering their investment it makes sense in a way, but also does seem there won't be a whole lot that is original or different as they try hard to cater to the 2M Sub market that they must have to succeed.

Well, this was hardly a news. They have confirmed battlegrounds long time ago.
"We have a deep story, but you can do a lot of things outside of the story. There is exploration, combat and crafting along with other things you see in traditional MMO's. There are guilds, raids and battlegrounds and things like that. So there are definitely things in our game that you would see in traditional MMO's." - Rich Vogel, Bioware, 2009 (emphasis added)

That leaves some place for optimism. Lets wait one more day. I think tommorow they will finally talk about this in detail.

Be that as it may we still know next to nothing about the pvp mechanics.
This is what we know so far.
Open world pvp will exist.
Battlegrounds will exist
PVPing has a reward system
PvE and PvP server rulesets are being explored
That is pretty much it so anything beyond that is pure asumption and speculation. Best case we are 11ish months from launch in that time there are a ton of gaps to fill in. I am going to hold my cat out of the bag this is the end of SWtoR comments until i have a bit more information to base my assumptions.

I agree. The "traditional" elements do make a good launch foundation. However, Bioware have the opportunity to not just stay with the format they launch with.
What makes me wonder is why the concept of CONSENSUAL openworld pvp isn't explored more. SWG did it to great effect. Just like any other PVP platform, it would need incentives and goals, but those wouldn't be much different to any other PVP platform. In actual fact, consensual openworld pvp brings much more to the game than battlegrounds / arenas do. Even for those who don't participate, the mere act of dynamic battles taking place randomly can add more to immersion. And may even entice such people to join in.
There's nothing stopping Bioware from having Battlegrounds, arenas AND openworld consensual pvp. Each can have their incentives and each could be linked in a complete PVP progression system (ranks, badges, items, etc).
Yes, it is another great IP that has to do with massive wars throughout galaxies, planets and their people fighting for freedom but they fight inside small scale arenas... I am so mind boggled as to why they hell game developers destroy great IP's like this. From Lord of the rings online, Star Trek online and so on, it makes me very sad. When I hear about these sugar coated MMO's, it makes me lose taste for the TV shows, movies I grew up with and loved.
No hiding it now, SWTOR is just a WOW copy cat with a star wars theme, AKA a game for infants that have no brain.
U HEARD IT FIRST FROM ME FOLKS!
First from you? Seriously, i hope its the last we hear from you too if you are going to make an assertion that cannot be backed up with evidence. It makes sense to take elements from other games and refine them, but that doesn't for one minute suggest anything like you are implying.
Using your argument, why not just call all land based MMO's made in the last 10 years EQ copycats while you're at it, because they've got a functioning UI, quests, pvp, pve and every other element that people enjoy in an MMO? Why not? Because such a generalisation doesn't actually provide a concise and accurate description of the product under scrutiny.
And where do you get the idea that its a game for infants? Given the information we have, how exactly have you reached that conclusion? Perhaps you think a game like Eve is for mature adults because of its heavy PVP theme? Yes, I can certainly appreciate how griefing and ganking can be considered mature.
I am a free-roam, open PVP, risk - reward MMORPG'er and pre-cu SWG vet and i still think this game is going to be great. Then again, i eagerly anticipated Star Trek Online and was seriously disappointed. We'll see. I don't think instanced PvP will be that bad in SWTOR, unless it really is like WOW's 8 vs 8 crappy Arena's. If it resembles more WAR's scenario's, i will be happy with that.

I am also hoping that since Mythic is part of the same company that SWToR would take the parts of WAR that worked and incorporate those. The scenario's in WAR were fun.

The number of successful games that didn't copy some elements/innovations from other games is actually rather small.
The truly unique games that managed to do so has actually become the statistical dark horse.
For a game with production costs this high, it's expceted that they would make use of formats proven successful in other games while providing their own twists to those formats.
For what it's worth, with the innovations WAR brought to the table in instanced pvp gameplay this should be fairly decent, IMO.
Some of the comments in this thread are rather funny as it appears some posters were expecting an MMO juggernaut to attempt forced open-world pvp.
it's sad, as people have said, star wars wow again (swg).....it'll have an interesting story which im sure i can read on wookieepeedia or something...unless there is no player bounty system im not going to be playing this

Has it been confirmed they are instances, all I have seen so far is that it will be batlegrounds. This could be WAR style RvR lakes?

Open world PvP is not appealing to the masses.
Gladly there's enogh indy-developers, who don't think about competing with the millions of subscribers of WoW etc.

Once again people jumping to conclusions without adequate information...
Let's wait for them to actually explain the entire PvP system before saying its all battlegrounds please. Thanks!
