Vanguard- I was in beta and knew the game was far from ready and it would crash and burn, which was a shame because it should have been awesome. If only...

Warhammer online- This game should have been another great but going down to the 2 factions made it too lop sided and when player population started dropping it got worse.

Almost forgot another recent one, way more of a diappointment than Perpetuum...Mortal Online. Great cool sounding concept which appealed to my love of fps games and MMOPRG games. The actual game is huge and complete letdown, couldn't stand playing the release for more than a few days.

    SWG-NGE

An absolute horrid travesty of the MMO world. Anyone involved with that decision should be ashamed of themselves.

    Fail, NGE was fail.

EQ2 and Champions online equally but for opposite reasons.

EQ2 had a great world and an interesting lore and story, but the mechanics of that game drove me mad. Then they kept changing it over the years when I'd give it another go. My swashbuckler went from a utility riddled backstabber to a taunting aoe'er with no defense.

Champions Online on the other hand has a great combat system and progression system in my opinion, but man the world they built from such an epic IP is so .. 'safe' and predictable it's painful to look at.

Vanguard SoH on the top for sure, not cause the game was bad but cause the development was bad. Everything I ever wanted in a game and cause of asshats and their money they broke it and refused to fix it.

Second is WoW, didnt break my heart it broke my gaming enviroment by making Ikea gaming profitable they led other companies to cater to the dumbed down masses instead of the true gamers.

1.) SWG. It was never really Star Wars, but that aside we all know where this was flushed.

2.) DDO. Sigh. More like "Diablo" than "Dungeons & Dragons". This is potentially more of a let down than SWG.

3.) Aion to a lesser extent.

I just remember the game being announced and you would have swore it was the second coming of christ, everyone thought it was THE next big game, and then WHAM, sold out to SoE and it was a steep decline from there.

That game should have been so much more.

Actually SOE was the best thing to happen to Vanguard at the time. It really saddens me that SOE are such idiots that they are letting this game stagnate like it is. I, like you, was very dissapointed in Vanguard at release. Vanguard has really come a long way now if you would only try it now. Vanguard could easily be the top MMo on the market now that is has improved but like I said SOE , I guess doesn't want it to be so, to hard to program for or something, I am at a loss to explain it. Much easier to just call SOE idiots. The game is awesome right now and could be so much more! Really makes me sick. SOE is the only reason I am not playing it  right now cause I feel the heartbreak that is inevitable would be so much worse than the pain I have already experienced already and I am afraid to be hurt again....

    Tabula Rasa. qqq

Sure it had things that needed fixing, but no more than many other releases that got updated, patched, and are still around.

First was Legends of Kesmai. LOK for short. Good old days of Gamestorm. EA bought them out and closed Kasmai down for fear of online competition. This took out sooo many great online games.

Next was UO post Lord Blackthorn Revenge. Fucking elves and they added an element system, I remember when this game wasn't cookie cutter and a private eye type skills were useful.

Then Dark Ages of Came-a-lot made spell casting for me easy. No reagents. LOVED the RvRvR. back with 300vs300. It soon became Dark Ages of Cast-a-lot.  I still hate nearsight.

Next up on my list in UO2. Oh how sexy you looked back then. Fucking EA.

Planetside. Oh planetside. 3 packed servers and everyone remembers a 16 hour fight over a bridge on some cont with all three factions.  Nerf bat spam from SOE. Max suits useful lost abilites. And everyone got battlemechs.

Then came WoW. oh great Wow. beta version 2.6. Mages could turn invisible. Moutian King hero classes for a select handful to test.  Balanced masterys.

    2.7 WoW dies for me.

I have had many loves. All great untill that faithful day of retardation from corporate bullshit. I still hate EA. Mythic failed at Warhammer. And Age of Conan wasn't even worth mentioning. SWG was ashame. Final Fantasy was a bitch.

Vanguard is now an awesome playable game. With a total of 30 people.

Another game that really, really disapointed me was Star Trek Online. I am still in tears as to how Cryptic ruined the most awesome thing in my memory (and I am 50 yrs old) and have been sooo wanting a Star Trek game to play since I was like 13 yrs old. It almost made me quit playing MMO"s for good. Thankfully LotRO still gives me a bit of hope. But I don't know for how long. The MMO industry has really went downhill since WOW.

Well, no MMO has broken my heart or any game for that matter. I've been disappointed sure, but that's about the extent of it. The major disappointment would be SWG when the CU was introduced and as well as how it was introduced. The original combat revamp they were testing seemed decent enough, yet it was scrapped for the CU design (big mistake IMO). AT that point the game was struggling as it was people were leaving on a regular basis, it was obvious something needed to happen. The answer sure wasn't the CU or NGE that's for damn sure.

SWG when the NGE smothered it with a pillow.

    Congrats to the OP.

This is one of the most enticing threads in ages. It's interesting to read all the reasons why people looked forward to certain games and had their dreams dashed.

Sorry this is OP, but it's just nice to read a thread that hasn't become a slanging match.

It's amazing how many games could have been great if they'd actually been finished before release and delivered on their promises.

    Great question OP!

For me, it was SWG.  I just loved the pre-CU game, and was thrilled at what could have come of it.

It was the only game that I could sit in the cantina all night and just RP and chat with people.

Runner up could be STO.  I was so excited about what I "thought" it would be.  Then I played the game.  Ouch.

SWG PRE and Post NGE for its lack of content and star wars feel.

  • SWG in the early days is the day where you feel like exploring a world, and interacting with ppl like a human being, not a hunter not a warrior.

DAoC is the game where we feel like a realm, marching out when the keeps come under fire, or we want to steal a keep or 2.

Nothing else comes close so far.

Haha I get that SOE messed up in alot of people's eyes, I guess my issue is that it was 5 years ago and people took it / still take it so personally. SOE was just trying to make their game appeal to more people...granted they didn't exactly do it in a gracious manner but it's done, over, and gone. It's not even this thread that angers me, it's how people find ways to stick the 'Big Screwup' issue into a conversation about rocks.

I'm sorry to the people who were wronged but seriously, get over it...

    /endRant

you know this is what sets most people off, telling them to get over it because it happend years ago,  a few posts back Terranah said it best " What bothers me the most is it's the one mmo in my mind I keep wanting to go back too, but it doesn't exist anymore.  So even if I am seeing SWG through rose tinted glasses, I'll never be able to reconcile my memory with current gameplay.  My memories will always be of hanging out in the cantina with my guildies, hunting parties gathering resources, mining, crafting, decorating, my pets, etc. " thats what eats at us, usually the only way you cant go back to a game is if it gets canceled, and at least that we can live with, its final. But when a game gets gutted and turned into a shadow of what it was and doesnt go away, its like a slap in the face. To say get over it because its just a game is ignorant, and no im not calling you that. I met some of my closest friends from inside SWG, and I'm still in touch with em every day. Frankly the only time I even bring up SWG is when another game is in danger of repeating the same mistake or someone is telling someone else to get over it. thats my 2 cents.

Well I'm always deep involed in the "chosen" game but never ever can a game break my heart usually thats my gf's job j/k.

The one which disapointed me beyond good well:

    V a n g u a r d

I've been following the game since the early leaked out, read interviews about the vision, watched countless videos and posted lots on stuff on the Sigil forums. Probably been one of the first testers who signed up for the beta, though chosen for Beta 2 access...I can honestly tell you the forums were as great as it gets: meeting sooo much ex Everquest 1, Daoc, UO and even AC players again it was like "wow this is going to be our home for a long time" absolutely loved the oldschool community, Brad McQuaid's Vision.

Some morning I woke up, after having a really stressful day at the college came home and read about the bullshit that Soe is now going to publish Vanguard. Don't know about the other but it was like a dp'ed trap in ultima online for me. Read the article over and over again, looked at the day and no it wasn't the first of April yet, so I became extremely pissed.

Went to the forums and it was what you would expect from a great community, which has been plagued with Soe labeled games alot. Altough I expected an incredible outrage it still blasted me away, hundreds of petitions, thousands of sites all claiming the same thing: get rid off Soe

Sigil didn't listen, so the former great community broke up. Many people decided its not worth it, others were sticking around cause they loved the game. At this point the game was doomed....we all knew how this would turn out and it began slowly: Soe devs were now doing work for Vanguard and the dumb down took place (avatars, more quest xp, and a wowlike combat system).

Needless to say I became more and more pissed about the fiasco...Time gone by again and well history repeated itself Sigil was forced into bankrupt by a doomed release and Soe took over - this was the darkest day in my whole MMO "career". At this point I became pissed at Brad wanted him to shut it down before seeing the game dumbed down for a bunch of wowboys.

We need a MMORPG Cataclysm asap, finish the dark age of MMORPGS now!

"Everything you're bitching about is wrong. People don't have the time to invest in corpse runs, impossible zones, or long winded quests. Sometimes, they just want to pop on and play."
"Then maybe MMORPGs aren't for you."

SWG - best crafting and community. Great sandbox.

WOW - would have broken my heart if it wasnt already slowly smothering me. Game went form playable to ez-mode to ridiculuously comical. At least I still ahve some RL from friends that I made in game.

Gaming since Avalon Hill was making board games.

Played SWG, EVE, Fallen Earth, LOTRO, Rift, Vanguard, WoW, SWTOR, TSW, Tera
Tried Aoc, Aion, EQII, RoM, Vindictus, Darkfail, DDO, GW, PotBS

    Talk about a layup...

I LOVED the CU version of SWG...I barely played Pre-CU and liked it as well...But for some reason, probably because My entire Guild seemed to love the CU version, I was in My glory...I had 18 weeks into the Village which means I had My 6 Base boxes open and I had filled 16 of the 24 boxes necessary to unlock the final Village Quest...That was a TON of XP already, and I had 8 more boxes to fill...I know some did it a lot faster, like they had all their XP when their 18 weeks were up, but I felt like I busted my ass to get the 16 filled...And I had a blast along the way...8 man hunting groups every night...SO much fun...

Then...well...You know...And it was all gone like that...Broken heart?...More like someone reached in and yanked my heart out then spit in my face...twice...I stayed around like an idiot off and on for the next couple of years...But I doubt any Game can disappoint me like that again...I was robbed I tell ya...image

SWG by a mile.  It was a dream game and I was planning to play for years, but SOE being the tools they are did what they did.
