WoW is probably the best in the action MMORPG category. However, I would still rate EVE a lot higher in overall MMORPG category due to both gameplay design and mechanics. It is probably one of the few truly Massively Multiplayer games out there. Also, it beats any other game in classical RPG sense, as allows you to truly roleplay your character - you can aim to be anything from lonely a cargo hauler to a fleet admiral, or from small- time corp CEO to an emperor of a mighty interstellar alliance and anything in between. You can actually be all those thing in a real sense.
Popularity simply is not a great measure for how good something is.

They see what worked well in other games and they implement it in their own game minus the annoyances of the original system. Sorry, but some people don't consider immersion and rewarding gameplay as an annoyance. But I guess it is to some. Some people that love Wii sports would consider playing regular games annoying.
I'm gonna disagree with these points here. WoW did have something that was immersive and that was the quests. Sure there are still quests that uses the same old Kill X, gather X. In WoTLK, there were plenty of quests that used many diverse mechanics such as controlling a vehicle. Sorry,, but I'm going to jump in here and say cough cough.. I had 2 friends when I played in wow that where horrible vehicle drivers. I'm not a fan of phasing because it seperates players that are on a different timeline.. There were times in WoTLK I could not help my friends with their phasing quest.. So much so I had to actually log on to their accounts and do it for them.. I can think of plenty of quest and areas that are treated as "done and gone", and gives you no ability to help friends.. One major example is what I call the "peeing" quest in Icecrown.. You are told to add fluid to a cauldron every 20 seconds or so.. but the cooldown on the vile was 40 seconds or longer.. so it's IMPOSSIBLE to do the quest solo.. Once you do the quest you lose the vile and unable to help anyone else that hasnt' done it.. This is a class example of piss poor thinking.. I reported this a few times to Bliz, but at the time I left WoW it was still not fixed..
Have you seen the Death Knight Starting area? It was one of the best starting area ever developed by Blizzard. The environment changed as you progressed through the zones and the final battle at Light's Hope Citadel. And don't get me started on the Wrath gate cinematics and the Battle of the Undercity that followed it. There are a lot more examples that I could name.
Everyone who doesn't agree just bashes wow for one or another thing, but noone says which game is better then. If you say no then give us a list which games are better and then we could compare.
2) Where is a true robust player crafting economy.. (note I said crafting, because most that is bought and sold in AH aren't crafted end products, but resources for people to grind alts)
3) Where is the open social raid game? Open, meaning that NO one is sent home because of some lame "hard cap"..
4) Where are the EPIC quest like EQ1 did almost 10 years ago? To this date those epic quest lines are far superior then anything Bliz has come up with..
5) Where is the guild leveling and housing? like what EQ2 has done..
6) Where is the robust open world contested PvP? Aion has their asses whooped in that area..
Do I need to continue, or do you get the idea?

In my opinion, at this precise moment in time, EQ2 is the best MMORPG. And yes....I played WoW for years. I much, much prefer EQ2 for myriads of reasons.
Ask this question again after GW2, Rift, and The Secret World are out...and I'll re-evaluate my answer then. However, I can't promise my opinion will change, even then.
I voted that some other game is better out of 10% knowledge and 90% ignorance.
For many particular features of WoW it is likely possible to find another game where that feature is better. That is not to say that the whole game is better. In fact even if some game was second best at everything it would likely be by far the best game.
Having said that, I played the trial versions of WoW and EQ2 back in 2006 and chose EQ2 tp play, as would have many, for various reasons. So it seems that I (and they) would vote accordingly. After that I chose LOTRO hands down. EQ2 was definitely the better game of the two.
Having played EQ2 for about 5 months and forcing myself to stick with LOTRO for about 13 months, and quitting both out of boredom, I never even considering trying out WoW again, I guess I wonder how long that one would have kept me interested and if that experience would have changed my vote.
I would guess that the real best game was probably one of the ones that was mortally wounded early in its existence and was never able to recover. So sad. Or that its already lurking out there but we can't find it.
(I do not understand the mentality of the players who stick to one game for years.)
nah. Maybe some peoples had a point in the past about the quality of games in the market. But nowadays the quality has improved to make it more as an above poster said more about opinion than anything.
That being said- theres a secondary point people make with these threads that we could be missing something in the current crop of mmorpgs due to being all the same formula essentially. And that is valid, that it would be good to see a well-done mmorpg that has stepped away from the 'formula' offering something different, and tapping right into its format of being a massively multiplayer online game. The potential is still there, to do something with that, its just finding that, and more importantly making that popularly accessible.
Er.. what ? Graphics have improved, internet connections are better, that's about it. Gameplay has been taking jet flights back further and further to more and more primitive days. The number of things you can do in modern MMOs is so very sad compared to the sheer number of things you could do in older ones. Why should we be moving backwards? Ah yes its called "refining" and "polishing"
Wow is the best at what it does and that is gear grinding and raiding. I have no idea if that makes it the best MMO or not.
Update: I assume this takes in to account the quality and quantity of the game. Wow has a great UI, Character Control, Graphic Artwork, and many more things I could list.
Wow is the best at what it does and that is gear grinding and raiding. I have no idea if that makes it the best MMO or not.
Eh, not even that. EverQuest and Final Fantasy, and most Asian MMOs have that market cornered. Like its been said, WoW is the master of nothing.
I lost all faith in your reply when you said EQ. When the person said best MMO I would assume this means UI, Animations, Character Control, etc.... The interface alone in EQ makes it a epic fail.
It's all relative. Different strokes for different folks. Generally speaking, yes WoW is the best currently.
Funny thing is that 75% of all the WoW haters never even play WoW. They're just anti-trendy. Nevermind how much of a trend that is itself .
PS. I see one kid in here really trying to make his point why WoW isn't the best. He goes on to point out omg Aion's world PvP is better, EQ1's quest lines were better, EQ2 had housing, this and that.
Do you realize that you're picking the best parts of EVERY game and comparing it to 1 single game? I think you just proved the point that WoW is the best by having to resort to picking out the best parts of each game to compare to 1 single game.
WoW isn't the best because it has the best quests. The best PvP. Maybe not even the best PvE. It's the best because it has enough of ALL of these. Sure Aion has better world PvP, but WoW has better everything else (except graphics).
WoW's community is probably its worst point. However, even then I find it 100x better than Eve's community where being a complete doosher is not only accepted, but praised and rewarded. In WoW you can simply put people on ignore...
I really don't know why I feel like I should even reply to this forum topic... Guess Im a Masocistic Man with a tendancy to gear towards impossible to answer questions.

If I just started playing WoW I'd say yes hands down.
After playing the game from like 2004-2008 I have to say no because it's too "middle of the road" and the end game has become an extremely add-on intensive community. However, the middle of the road thing is probably very good for a new player. People hate on it because they desperately want the genre to do some more original things. As long as we keep having games come out that are WoW-lite the genre moves in baby steps.
It also struck an addiction nerve which is why people defend it has wildly as those that hate it. If you shut down WoW right now you'd probably have more nerd rage and cases of depression than you could count.

I see we are in agreement then, WOW is the best at being an "Average" MMO in terms of game play features, yet when taken as a full package which is well polished you get the high sub numbers.
But for some folks, we really enjoy playing games that deliver the "best" experience in one or two areas, regardless of the rest of the package.

I think WoW is not really "Average" but amazing at being a great game for most people. I personally want more complexity, more details, more customization, better (more complex) crafting, etc... In fact I want a game that takes time to learn and even more time to master. I don't want to feel like I have mastered the game, but that there is always something MORE...
Unfortunately because of WoW's huge slice of the pie, the rest of the MMO market is shrunk and it leaves the rest of the developers unwilling to spend money on a game that has a chance of failure. They create sub pair games, that only become GREAT when they are already out of date.
What I am seeing is that some of these games are begin revisited. Not with Sequels, but with entire engine and graphic's overhauls. Eve is an example of this, and the upcoming Anarchy Online switch to the Conan's engine will make these seasoned and great games become very viable games in todays market place.
I cant WAIT till Anarchy Onlines graphic's are updated. This game is definitely not for new MMO's, and even seasoned MMO players will find the learning curve to be a constant challenge.
These games have already had their ups and downs and are therefor mature and well setup. I wish I could log onto AO and start playing, but the current graphics engine is horrible.

I didn't say those games were the best MMOs, I said those games were the biggest grinds and the most hardcore raiding games.
WoW really doesn't do anything better than any other MMO, and its still lacking so many features that were commonplace 8 years ago by much smaller dev teams.
I feel that WoW has stopped being a MMORPG. Thank about it most players login, sit in the major city, get in a PUG, and repeat that ALLLLL DAY. I played form open bata it up until just before WotLK. Now it is more like an Xbox 360 or PS3 game not a real MMORPG, at lease not to me.
WoW (World of Warcraft), has too many features to name and is popularly played. But, is it the best game currently running?
My vote was no because it is not my personal favorite but it is the standard by which all mmo's should be created, BIG. WOW is and has always been full of content much more so than just about any other mmo I've played since or before the game world is huge and the instances are also numerous and many of them fun to play. MMO devs often copy the most easy things to copy in WOW while ignoring that it is so widely played because they just gave so much to he players.
but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

It was hardly a real MMORPG when it launched and has become less so with every patch. Almost all the content is focused on the solo player or small groups. Now with the dungeon finder, its almost like playing Diablo with a monthly fee. WoW is more of an arcade game than a real virtual world MMO, and I am tired of people comparing this new wave of mini game compilations to the truly MASSIVE games of the past.
Also, someone saying "WoW has too many features to name"... seriously? Its such a one dimensional game, its missing so many features. It has the bare minimum.

LOL very true, but player still needed to explore the world back then and there was not as much fast travel then as well, and for the high end players there where still places to go and see and a few open world bosses.

Theres more than that. You look at melee classes in WoW and compare them to EQ. I mean EQ was more my cup of tea, but when you look at say WoW theres no doubt it has a better quality production I guess I'm trying to say than the previous iterations of mmorpgs. But yeah you're right theres some core appeals lost with that.
