Tera gameplay looks bad

bastionixbastionix Member Posts: 547

The first videos of the boss fights were impressive. But as usual it was set up to look really good, in actuality the gameplay seems like any other MMO, and a pretty bad one at that. This video show what looks like very unresponsive and amateuristic combat scenes:

As opposed to what? Tab target and auto attack? I think this looks amazing.

I don't know what video you're watching, I think it looks awesome.

It doesn't look amazing if you're honest with yourself. It looks like any other MMO out there. Tera was supposed to bring "revolutionary combat" to the table and it's a run of the mill slow and unresponsive action game. I don't need to sugar coat this, it kinda speaks for itself.

I've got to agree.  This video is rather underwhelming.  I think eliminating tab targeting is a great idea and a step forward for mmos, but outside of that this looks exactly the same as what we have been doing for years.  That could be because it's just the run of the mill pve part of the game, but I was hoping for more.

HOLY CRAP BALLS! This just makes me want to say screw SW:TOR and play this NOW!

I think I might actually try playing 2 MMOs at once now lol... but in the very least I will have at least something new to pick up.

I have been watching this game pretty closely since I found out about it and everything I keep seeing is just making more and more sense to me. I cannot wait to see what PvP is going to look like in this game :D

I don't see what your getting at. "very unresponsive and amateuristic combat scenes:" I didn't see any unresponsiveness. Amateuristic? What do you expect a sorcerer to do? He stands and casts spells and that is what he was doing. The phase about it looking like any other MMO, well, it will look like an MMO cause it is. Though I don't know many full world MMOs with a non-targeting action combat system. If you missed the point in that then please leave and spare us your ignorance.

PvE in most games looks pretty much the same.... why? Because of the god damn AI... I think the true test to this combat system will really come into play with the PvP... but at least in this game there is total collision and not just "Hey let me walk through this guy... or hey let this boss just one shot me through the group/raid...."

One person running around solo wont give any game much credit >.>

The mobs are very unresponsive in my eyes. A good AI system notices when a player is in aggro range, these mobs just stand there next to him without movement until he attacks.

The amateur comment is directed at the crosshair, in newer combat games with controllers (like Tera boasts) the crosshair moves and isn't stationary. The fact that they never mentioned the 'non-target' system is just = crosshair is kinda shady, allt he previous videos disguised the crosshair.

Pure speculation here, but if you look at how much damage he's doing in the video, I see some 80 points of dmg here and some 34 points of dmg there. Looks like this is very early on in the game and not many games have crazy fast paced combat that early in the game.

Yeah watching that video gave me flashbacks from Asheron's call 1, that looked like clearly dodgeable projectiles with a very fluid movement system.

I was originally not caring about this game, this made me interested.

They said im pretty sure in the last video released at E3 that spells and objects as well as melee attacks were going to be dodge able not just when the player missed his target.... Complete step up in the realm of playing a caster in this game... heck I might even play one for a change lol

Pretty decent in general after watching the vid: BUT, hate to say this, doesnt look very far off from another "WoW-clone" except with up-to-date graphics engine.

Well, this proves you never played the game then. Maybe you should at least try it before you knock on it. I have played in the FGT and TERA has the most monster responsiveness I have seen in any MMO to date.  Also, the crosshairs are only there for ranged classes.

  • TazlorTazlor Member UncommonPosts: 864

hard to tell.  i think a melee class would have been a better pick for the vid if you're trying to show off the game.  the charcter movement looked terrible though...

Well, no kidding Sherlock, considering the only place you can try this game is at places like Comic-con and highly exclusive events, chances are you're the only one in this thread to have played it. Doesn't stop me from speculating, I'm not claiming to be 100% right.

Also it looked like the Mobs he was attacking were green named to him... in most MMOs arent the red ones that only attack you when you are in aggro range? lol... the crab in the E3 video did look like it had a fairly small aggro range but wont really know until still even more info...(vids) are released!

You were much too nice about it. I do not even like TERA at all and can definitley argue for it this time. Probably should not waste my time on this guy.

You could say that about any game. Are you slow or something? Just because it is a fantasy game and an MMO does not mean it is WoW. WoW is not the be all end all.

Please explain why it is a WoW clone. Because it has combat? Because it is a fantasy game? Because it has a map and chat box?

    You sound like an idiot.

Led Zeppelin is a clone of Pink Floyd. They both use guitars, drums, bass, and keyboards therefore Led Zeppelin is a clone and didn't do anything original. That's the common thought process I see around here.

I said its not far off, just gave me that feel from first impressions at the graphics/mobs/interface layout. And yes many games give me that same feel, so, yes i could almost say that about most of the current/just-launched mmos. I am hoping for something new, or prolly like a break-thru in the mmo genre. That being said, it still looks generally decent, but nothing to jump around and get excited about.

Ya I dont agree with the OP either, about the only thing i agree with is the agro range so far is pretty bad, but that can easily be changed.

The combat seems like it could be fun and much different, im sure it wont anything too much like WoW

I am pretty excited to see the finished product of Tera

Im still trying to figure out what people mean but breakthrough in the MMO genre.... I mean AoC didnt have much of a UI... I dont remember people being like zomg so different and then bailed on it and still put it down because it was a bit rushed and had a slow start.

what do you want them to do?  how can they make a MMO that's completely different than WoW?  every fricken game is a WoW clone because people want it to be COMPLETELY different.  how are they supposed to do that?

To be very frank, i dont even know what i'm looking for myself. I'm not a game designer, i'm a player. But when that mmo comes along that introduces all new/refreshing concepts, and i feel like i'm playing something new for once, i'll know it.
