It's possible that the ACTUAL gameplay of Guild Wars 2 is as different from that trailer as Warhammer Online's gameplay was from the CGI trailers EAMythic released.

If that were the case, however, ANet's ruination at the hands of disgruntled fanboys would be displayed to the interwebs via 24-hour livestream directly from Cologne, Germany. I mean, it's possible. I just don't think that ANet is that delusional or career suicidal to insist that if they're talking about game mechanics, it means the mechanics are in-game, then open up 45 demo stations and stream the results to fans who have been chomping at the bit to see just that.

But hey, we'll find out in a week! Either way, it will be interesting.

The thing is, live demos on rigs specially designed for the job and showing scenarios that are specially designed for the show are not necessarily indicative of how the rest of the game will be on joe publics pc at launch.  However, at least the demo will give a little more insight into the game.

As an aside, one thing I've noticed about these videos is that Anet are heavily using a lot of "bloom" effects.  The point is, using such an effect is like putting vasceline (petrolium based clear lubricant) on a camera lens, it can hide a lot of imperfections in the subject matter.

Anet has admitted that they are spending months polishing those areas that players will see in the demo. Why? Because it's the first real impression of guild wars 2 for the world. People don't want to see a demo that's full of bugs, glitches, and graphical problems. Why do you think they aren't releasing open beta till close to release, if they even do open beta. Beta has now become the demo period for the mass. And the demos are meant to give us an insight into the gameplay of GW2, not whether it'll be able to run on joe shmos computer fom 2004(which i don't think it will). Anet said they are shooting for midrange computers from around 2009. Anyways, it's expect that the demo at Gamescom and PAX will be the best quality possible for the game. What would you rather see for the first real showing of the game? A demo on a midrange computer, without achieving the best graphics possible, or a demo showcasing the true potential of the game?

Guild Wars 1 uses a fair amount of bloom as well - I don't mind it, others do. *shrug*

The wonderful thing about moving goalposts beyond the release date is that you can remain critical of everything your eyes see past the point that it is relevant. That is, if a live demo (not the 15 staged 34-40 minute presentations that will be happening at Gamescom, rather the open computers that let you play the game from level 1 and level 47) isn't evidence of the quality of the game for people who demand to see gameplay, then there isn't really any point in discussing anything, is there, because if all information is suspect, there are no facts to discuss.

(Note: I am not taking anything ANet has said as fact thus far, but I do discuss the information we've seen and read and heard at face value because I find little point in dismissing the only source of information we actually have, especially since we have no counter facts to replace it with other than "nuh-uh!")

Ah- they SAID so, but how do you know it isn't a lie?! I think you should operate as though it's a lie and make up another set of specifications to take its place. *nods*

Wow. I know weve seen some of that footage in other various clips over the past couple months, but there was some stuff that I havent seen yet and Ive got to say that GW2 (IMO) has one of the most beautiful worlds and best artistic styles/designs ive ever seen in an MMO. Just watching that video alone (without taking into account all the features like the DES, Traits, personality, The Mists, etc theyre adding into it as well) makes me want to play the game so bad. Add the featureson top of that and it makes me want to fly my ass out to Germany to try the demo ASAP.

Hell, my own girlfriend who normally cant stand MMOs (has only ever tried one, and only for a couple days) and constantly talks crap about them has seen some of the earlier videos and has heard from me some of what theyre doing with the game, and even she wants to play it. Cant wait to show her this video too.

Btw... some of you might have skipped it at the very end of the clip (like last 5-10 seconds) but the underwater looks awesome. Was that some kind of whale? I think im going to be spending a lot of time exploring and enjoying the underwater content for stuff like that. Most other MMOs that have had underwater content generally have just small simple enemies/creatures swimming around, but having stuff like that whale swimming by you (and freaking you out if youre not paying attention to your surroundings) is going to make it so much more exciting.

Let me quote another example of why such an attempt to "market" the game could end up biting them in the proverbial ass.  Allegedly, Brad McQuaid admitted that they purposefully engineered the scenarios that they were showing at the shows to emphasise the game in the best possible light.  And whilst in theory that sounds all very well and good, it is also very dangerous for the reputation of both the product and the company.  Especially when in reality Vanguard ran like crap on even the high end rigs come launch day.  And what was Brads reasoning?  That Vanguard "had been designed for future rigs".

Now, yes, of course we'd like to see the game in the best possible light (so to speak) but if the result of doing so ends up as a gross misrepresentation of how the game will actually play on an average customers pc which exceeds the minimum spec, then that isn't going to do the game or the company any favours come launch day.

The moral of all this is:  don't try to kid your customers with marketing BS, misdirection and other attempts to hide the issues with the game.  It will eventually bite you in the ass.

Then you have the 2nd stage of the demo, where you can step into L47 in a Charr area, the cannon fortress that is shown in the video, and this is where also the dragon shown in the video is lurking around.

Yup, "Shatterer" dragon. I am more impressed by those Earth Hands, I really hoped the vid would show the Purple Dragon corrupt all those heroes charging at it with it's special breathe attack... a missed opportunity!

I was impressed by both. The best part of the video was in the last minute. The other stuff I've seen before, such as in the skills videos. You can't tell me how awesome it would be in game for that dragon to come out of the clouds like that though. I think my character would be running away, not toward it like in that video.

The moral of all this is:  don't try to kid your customers.

And this is where careful watching and reading are going to come in. There is nothing I can say to counter that, because that is another "what if". Of course it could happen, it could happen to any company. This is where some of that good skepticism comes in. I'm not denying it's bad to be skeptical, in fact I think it's a very good thing. However, I don't think it's good to be completely pessimistic about it either. I mean, anything like that could happen. We are going to have to just trust that Anet knows what they are doing. I mean they truely are betting their entire company on Guild Wars 2. It's not like if it fails they can just fall back on Guild Wars 1 to cover their losses. I think they've got all the money they can get with guild wars 1. Which is why I don't think Anet will be stupid enough to pull something like that. There is nothing I can say, no proof I can provide other than Anet's word that they are aiming GW2 to be ran on today's midrange computers rather than the midrange of 2005.

When they show gw2 demo those guys will shut up! arenanet doesn't release anything that hasn't already been implemented in the game! Earlier trailers were based on concept art done by arenanet's artists. Now they do actual gameplay trailers!

Anybody remember that Aion 3.0 trailer? Yea, that's what I thought.... Until I see it in the game I don't believe it... They made aion look like this epic game in the trailer and when the game came out it wasn't half as good as the trailer. Just more hype here nothing more nothing less...

Yea, Aion was a good game, but certainly not the game from the aion 3.0 trailer they all wanted you to believe it was. Looks like more handy work from ncsoft.  Yea yea yea.. aranet my ass. Who's name is still on the box.

Who is developing a game matters far more than who is publishing it. Aion was developed in South Korea and was created as a traditional eastern grindfest. It was later hastily repackaged for a western audience. Arenanet is a western based developer that has already established a baseline of standards with Guild Wars. They have shown already that they are raising the bar for themselves by a large margin and have also stated that every bit of info they release is on something "already in the game".

I ask that you do a little bit of research before you attempt to troll. Although, being a troll, that may be too much to ask of you.

     Hahaha.....

You realize that the gw2 trailer is quite reminiscent of the aion 3.0 trailer?

Everyone on here is 0o0o0o0o0o aaaaahhhhhhh the trailer, but how will the actual game turn out?

They seen one trailer and all of a sudden this game is a WOW and every other MMO killer?

I highly doubt that. I think people will buy it becuase it is b2p and then will still be subbed to their other MMOs of choice.

If anything kills this game it will be itself. All this false hope and too high expectations for it. People think it will be the MMO killer. People think it has all this different stuff to offer to the MMO genre. Well, I hope it does. I must say, I enjoyed that video and was excited myself. But I am not gonna let a company with NCsoft on the title get my hopes up too high.  Regardless if they develope or publish the game.

Lol your talking like the aion 3.0 video was something they posted before the game lauched to get people to buy the game when it wasnt even released till like 3 months after the game was out, so not really the same thing.

And if you did buy aion a few months after release after seeing that trailer and are butt hurt becasue it wasnt like that then i say thats your fault for not doing any research, becasue it was stated by ncsoft in alot of places that that wasnt what the game is like now and it was more a "this is what we would like aion to be by the time we get to 3.0" and at the time they where on 1.9, so years away.

Anyway nice trailer, looks like im gonna need a new computer if i want to play this game.

First off, that is not what I said. I showed a variety of trailers. That one was just one of the latest trailers.  In all those aion game play trailers none of the combat actually looks as good as it does in the actual game, and that wont change no matter how many updates or expansions they bring out... I was talking about how they beefed up the combat to make it look more than what it is in the game.   That isn't gonna change when 3.0 hits if it ever does go live.

Now , those trailers look an awful lot like the same people are behind them.  Maybe , maybe not, but I doubt the game play is gonna look like anything from this trailer...

I am not even hating on the game it is just a fact from all previous experience with these game trailers.  They are made to look alot more appealing to attract alot more customers.

I definately am going to buy Guild wars 2...  but I am not going to let all this hype and talk cloud my judgement and raise my expectations. If it is this great , well all good. But I will have to see it to believe it.

No that's a shark, not a whale. It's also the pet of that sylvari we see right before that gigantic lizard dragon thing appears. So yes you can have a shark as a pet. You are allowed 3 pets at a time as a ranger. Some pets can go both in the water and on land, while there are some water only pets and land only pets. There are also some pets that normally shouldn't be able to go into both but can (wolf I believe). This is where the "but i wanna take my *enter animal name here* underwater with me" comes it.

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

“It's unwise to pay too much, but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money - that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do. The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot - it can't be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

That didn't really look like any sort of shark, and i highly doubt thats any form of pet, its just way too bog, the face alone is bigger than the entire body of that Sylvari, thats why i assume its like some form of whale (though it could be a giant shark of some sort i suppose, but not a pet that players will be taking around with them it's just too big). I dont know if we're taking about the same part of the video or not, this is the last few seconds of the video starting at about 5:30

I'm talking about that thing off in the distance in the underwater scene at the end. That thing off in the distance is a shark. I was wrong about it being the pet of the sylvari, it's the pet of another player/character apparently. You see a shark like creature in the lower left corner before the giant head appears. The giant head is a dragon, but not an elder dragon. No info on that dragon, other than it's not an elder.

    Wicked Awsome :)

I'm starting to gain some interest in this game. Anyone have an ETL? I checked the official site but the FAQ section was down...

... I can tell that more than half of the doubters here will probably end up playing GW2 and actually liking it...

Then again, they probably won't admit it.

Wrong, Aion 3.0 is a  trailer as where the devs want to bring Aion in the future (thats why it was called vision trailer), even said so in the trailer, they also stated that not everything will make it in the game either, GW2 trailer on the other hand is ingame footage thats actually in the game.

I played GW1 and all expansion and i never caught Anet on advertising something that was not in the game.

Either way it was a part of the hype machine.... And for the guy that keeps telling me to look up stuff about the game. I have been following this game alot.    What I don't like seeing is all the hype "MMO KILLER" bullshit.

Yea , this game looks good, it feels good, and hopefully it will deliver. But to say this will kill or change the MMO genre is just misplaced pessimism.

I don't think that word means what you think it means.

I believe I meant to say optomism , so yea, you're right that is not what I meant to say, but I do know what the word means.

When you have a negative outlook on something is pessimism. I meant to have a positive outlook

That's the thing with a few people (hopefully not most).  They will play a game or watch a movie that they clame to hate and end up liking it, but they are too ignorant to admit that it is indeed a good game, movie, book, etc. because they can't publicly handle the fact that they are wrong.

That of course, is true cowardice.

Will this game be amazing, I certainly think so. Will it be the end all, be all of MMORPGs? Not likely, and that is because it is only one genre and everyone is looking for something catered to them.  Guild Wars 2 will cater to a LOT of people (millions more then likely) but there will always be those out there that GENUINELY do not like the game.  To those I say, "okay, at least your honest."  To the ones that just like hating on games, even though they themselves play it and for the most part enjoy it, well then...grow up.

I feel ya. I've already been hyped about GW2 for a long time, and I've been following it since they started releasing info...but nothing they've released before this video has gotten me nearly as hyped as the video has. Like you said, This video has killed my interest in other MMO's. I'm currently playing AoC, and I have no desire to play that or any other MMO that I can think of till GW2 comes out.

    Hey everyone,

Well I absoluely looved the video! I never played the first one so I have a couple questions.

1.) They said it's an MMO but no monthly fee?

2.) Is this game all PvP or can I log in when I have the time and play PvE on my own til end game?

I really enjoy MMO's but my RL schedule is quite hectic so I log in and play when I can. I'm hoping I don't have to PvP in this and can log in at any random time and just jump in game for some PvE quests.

Thanks a bunch everyone and awesome video!!

really good video, loved the cities and event destructions. If information keeps coming this way i might preorder actually but i have my doubts on some concepts they have.

first grind; they say there wont be grind and i partly believe them, i think what they meant is there wont be forced grind, you'll get highest stat armor easily but the obsidian/mitril/whatever-cool-looking-same-stat armor will be hard and grindy to get. nothings wrong with this, anything thats scarce is more valuable and is scarce for a reason, just to be clear about "no grind"

second the chain effects; although it seems superb right now, lets say you want the reward from bad red dragons attack on city. there will be things proceeding this event but there was preceding events also. If the ones preceding dont happen dragon wont attack and you wont get the reward. This will cause global chat go like "dont kill the centaurs attacking village, we need that to happen for dragon attack", "dont blow the bridge pls" etc. I'm curious how they'll address this, if they ever.

ps. if everything turns out to be great and like they said; how will the other companies justify the money they want from us? were we suckers? lol

    I need more vespene gas.

    1) Yes that's right no monthly fee
    2) PvP is completely seperate to PvE, the main map is all about PvE while PvP is mini games and one vast instance called The Mists which is World vs World (world = server)

Check the link in my sig for more info

Though not a lot has been revealed, I think I can answer your questions.

    1. Yes it will be fully persistent MMO with no subscription fee. Part of this is due to there business model of releasing new campaigns and/or expansions every so often... maybe once a year or what not. The other part is due to the fact that MMO's don't actually require a million players to pay $15 a month to keep their servers up. If the past comes to pass again, then the cash shop in GW2 should be very limited. Everything from the first game was unlockable in-game except make-overs, sex changes, and character slots.

    2. PvP can be skipped entirely. The game has a very in-depth story, drawn from the first game. The world is claimed to be very immersive, and beyond the story there are still events and dungeons to explore. Note that you can also play strictly PvP. You can achieve the same character status in PvP as with PvE.

    3. The last part is hard to answer. BUT! I will try. Firstly, there is no grind. There is no need to log on and kill the same creatures for hours. Secondly, there are events happening around the world, in that I mean, there aren't quests in the GW2. No matter how many times you participate in an event, you can always play it through again, even if it is at a different point in the event. And thirdly, the city activites. Each main capital has fun game activites to play. These range from shooting gallery, to bar fights, so snowball fights, even playing instruments for others to hear. These were designed specifically to "relax" from combat game-play. It was stated that these activities gave rewards, but not currently known at the moment.

But in short, you cannot log on and play quests, for there are none. Only "dynamic events." :D

Well, they could make the best rewards harder to get without making them grindier to get.  Kill the toughest boss in the game, for example.  They say they are placing artificial limits on how much time you can spend on the same content before you've gotten everything you can from it, so it would only be consistent to continue that philosophy in the endgame.  Also keep in mind that the GW franchise has de-emphasized gear for stat purposes thus far.

They can give equal rewards for either branch in the chain events, so people wouldn't have any reason to ask for one outcome or another other than to see the content.  Also, you don't go to the town expecting an event to happen, you roam around and run into events that could be at any stage of progress.  That way, you're always doing something, usually something new, and you're always being rewarded.  You'd probably only show up at that village expecting a dragon attack if people had just completed the precursor quests leading to that and announced it to people, or you unlocked it yourself.
