Ehh... I played Wow for more then 3 years and Bioware still has yet to show me how this isn't a solo game that they will charge me ~&15 a month if I don't finsh it fast enough.

I will not play a game with a cash shop ever again. A dev job should be to make the game better not make me pay so it sucks less.

I think, maybe, there is a shift happening in mmorpgs... or at least the definition of them.  A lot of these new mmos coming out are basically taking the concept of a console rpg or console action/adventure game and putting it in a persistent world with hundreds of players.

thats not an mmorpg.  its just your favorite console game online.  nothing wrong with that, theres some good stuff on the horizon that follows this formula.

but theyre def not mmoprgs, and a lot of ppl (myself included) are getting tired of having this type of content being passed as our favorite genre.

it needs a new sup-genre or something.  and ffs lets get some devs to make a real mmorpg sometime soon.

If you liked WoW, you'll love TOR.

I still think it's a pretty big stretch to directly compare and complain similarity SWTOR to WOW.

    You'll find out next year.

I didn't really hate WOW, I didn't particularly like it either.  I'm still looking forward to the continuation of the KOTOR story, more so than looking forward to playing TOR forever, unless it has decent PVP.        Yes space on rails is a huge insult, and its fanboys and console kids that are voting up the "Yes".

For the readers that are not familiar with the back history of space as requested by the TOR community, there was a thread with a poll in it that had to be restarted 3 times due to it filling up from so much activity. 3d dogfighter was most requested. Rail Shooter was least requested. http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=18061 and http://www.swtor.com/community/showthread.php?t=136283 . Now the second link Rail Shooter category had only 13 votes for 1.33% before the news hit. The fanboys since tried to vote it up some but its still blown away by the votes for 3d dogfighter categories.

Which highlights the reason this is such a big deal. There were polls in the forums showing what people who were interested in space wanted well before the Comic-Con reveal. And Bioware completely ignored that and took the easy way out.

The only way we can send a clear message to Bioware and EA is to not buy this game if they let the rail shooter environment stand. If we all buy the game even though we are unhappy, our voices will not be heard and it will send a clear message to developers, "hey its ok to ignore people and give them something they don't want. they'll still buy the game like good little fanboys".

If they remove the rail shooter environment and do a proper 3d dogfighter as a later expansion I will consider buying.

[mod edit - right Asmiroth20!] They are happy about getting a half assed feature in the game just because it's made by Bioware and because it's Star Wars. It's quite disgusting really, the fanbois that are happy with everything in this game are the same people that will make it fail by not voicing their opinions before it's released.

Never mind, you guys editted my post because I used retard in it, lol. For a minute I thought you guys thought I was Asmiroth.

It kind of depends why you dont like WoW, dont you think? Its also getting a little silly that ppl who are so eager to talk down on SW:TOR always use WoW as beating stick. With every single game.

For me being happy isnt about being a fan boy although i am a huge star wars fan ive read and own most of the novels and i own all the movies. that said I just am not into a sim type fighter games so being a rail shooter that has maybe a 2 pct impact on the overall game doesnt bother me.

My understanding is the rail shooter thing is a very small part of the experiance in swtor and most of it will be based around instances and questing like in most mmorpgs. Just u will be jedi and sith  instead of mage and warrior. Im hoping the story is worth it. I dont know if it will be or not or if i will get tired of it by the third quest i do .

The companion system the player houseing on shipts, The classes and thte class specific stories are what im interested in. I didnt want a tie fighter sim type game anyways. When they add a star fighter pilot as a class then complain about rail fighter system as of now that doesnt exist. I just think getting really upset over a 2 pct of game content is useless.

My understanding also is swtor is more about fighting on ground on planets like hoth and nar shadda and doing pvp on places like alderanna with class specific races. This all seems pretty cool to me . I will admit of allthe new mmorpg ive read up on swtor is only number 2 in interest for me . Tera seems like its gonna rock and im actually a bit drawn to it for some reason .

truth is ill stay a wow player and probably get into swtor because i am a fan boy . But make no mistake the gameplay and the stores are gonna keep me playing. IF those dont add up in the end ill just go back to wow. But the rail system fighter pilot stuff doesnt really bother me . Like i said its like a 2 pct of gameplay. If that.

I have read most of them and keep up with darth hater.  But when they mention group and friends in interviews they always enforce the point that they are just optional.   I have played games where groups are optional and soloing gives nearly the same exp/loot.  You know what happens in those games?  No one talks to each other let alone group and I play MMORPGs for the MMO parts as well as RPG parts.

To me adding a solo ONLY space mini-game not only insults the part of me that likes SW/sci/Space combat but only the part of me that likes to interact with people in an MMO.

I will not play a game with a cash shop ever again. A dev job should be to make the game better not make me pay so it sucks less.

I'm not sure if there is any real continuation to the KOTOR story. Although they share a similar setting, the two games are 300 years apart.

BioWare claims that TOR will be KOTOR 3, 4, 5, 6... etc. and I think that this is where a lot of people get confused. They are talking about the scope of the game as far as content, not the actual continuation of the story.

It's not silly at all. It's a known fact that BioWare is trying to emulate WoW. They've pretty much said so themselves. Also, the reason people use WoW in conparisson to TOR is because WoW is a game known by most MMO gamers.

Sad to say but the fans on the original site seems to mainly consist of World of Warcraft washouts.

Every Bioware game to date: Awesome.

    Star Fox: Awesome.

    Combined: Awesome x2.

    I rest my case.

  • With Jump to Lightspeed being an entire expansion with the only thing being added being space I hope that Bioware does not solely focus on space as an expansion like SOE did. I think that SOE did a lot of right with SWG and I think they did a lot of wrong. I enjoyed space combat, but in no way was it my entire game. I'd of played Eve if I wanted super in depth space. I think however SWG original class design was brilliant, and I give credit where credit is due. Each MMo company has some learning time, and for the fact that they are including a space combat component at all in the game is pretty amazing to me. I am pretty stoked at everything they have mentioned so far, and I can't say this was upsetting at all and made me look forward to the game even more.

This is a bit from the article I posted ealier on storytelling in TOR:

Players of Knights of the Old Republic will remember the series of events that occurred several hundred years later, surrounding two Jedi known as Revan and Malak. “There are a lot of unanswered questions that fans had there,” Erickson says. “One of the big ones is, after Knights II, it’s made clear that Revan went back into deep space to address the issues of whatever had turned him and made things go bad in the first place. But they’re kind of vague about it. So we picked that up, and took it, and said that we’re going to answer that question.” In the first KoTOR Revan and Malak defied the orders of the Jedi Council, and entered into war against the Mandalorians. This triggered a series of events that would send Revan and Malak off into deep space. What players of those first games don’t know is what happened while they were away.

During their exile, they met the Sith and their dangerous emperor, who turned them to the dark side. The two former Jedi were sent back to the Republic to rediscover the ancient Star Forge, a powerful weapon created by the lost civilization of the Rakata. With the powerful weapon, the Sith emperor would be able to accelerate his plans to return and strike down the Republic. “They were supposed to be the forward scouts that set everything up for the emperor,” Erickson explains. “But, being Sith, they did what they normally do, and warred with each other. Messed everything up.” Malak betrayed and murdered Revan. Or so he thought. Revan was wounded, but not killed. In a controversial move, the Jedi council erased Revan’s memory, retrained him, and sent him out to defeat Malak. Malak was defeated, the Star Forge destroyed, and Revan proclaimed a hero. However, Revan had dark memories of the true evil facing the Republic, and he departed once again into deep space, seeking the Sith Emperor, and was never heard from again. So, will we find out Revan’s fate, along with the fate of the Exile from KoTOR II that followed him? “All of your KoTOR 1 and 2 questions will be answered,” Erickson promises.

This is a part of the world story arc, not your class story arc. But I am sure if you are sith or even jedi, you will learn much of this in your class story arc. And as far as group quests. The world story arc quests will be group required. Flaspoints may or may not scale to your party. Not sure about flaspoints. The info on the main site is mixed a bit.

Frankly, this is a huge dissapointment. After all this is "STAR WARS". Space combat is a large part of "STAR WARS", So a on rails shooter seems very offensive to me. It's like a sick joke. Why don't they just rename the game to "Ground wars"...

  • WaterairSpirWaterairSpir Member Posts: 1

    Hi,,

Unfortunately as far as I can remember the Star wars game (except X wing and Tie fighter) were craps regarding the possibility of the star wars history.

It's time to break up the industrial logic on game and came back to creativity.

    Yes.

I can't believe that space is single player.  For all the emphasis I and many others put on trying to show that this game is going to be a normal MMO, this is just making us and Bioware look silly.

A single player rail shooter. Oh boy....

Did you notice that all Bioware does - ever since KOTOR is to take the same game and put different skin on it ?

There is ZERO innovation , zero risk taking. Its the "Bioware formula"

I honestly suspect SWTOR will be train wreck. 150 million dollars. Limonade. Having to compete with WOW Cataclysm + Guildwars 2

They stand no chance. Perhaps only if they make it F2P

You mean like how Guild Wars is failing?

Maybe you don't realise this mr. Bitton, but a lot of people following this game don't give a crap about space combat in the first place, maybe you could accept that.

I voted "need more information"... Why? Because I do care about space combat, I'd like to have seen it be some fully fledged space sim (while I knew it wouldn't be), or having more freedom.

BUT the thing is: I've haven't seen the darn thing in action yet, and maybe yes, it might be a fun and cinematically relevant addition to the game, which can be build on in the future. So sure I'm disappointed, but I need to know more.

Together with Massively releasing an actual article based on leaked beta screenshots today and this piece of unmotivated opinion, I hope this does not mark a trend in Journalistic expression when it comes to this game.

Feel free to use my referral link for SW:TOR if you want to test out the game. You'll get some special unlocks!

I am indifferent because space combat was never really my focus or reason for picking up this game. If they add more space combat fine, otherwise i would be more than satisfied playing the rich story driven experience that Bioware has to offer. A lot of SWTOR fans do not care about space combat as it has been proven by poll results on official forums.
