To the author:  I was quite worried when the early news from the Germans came out.  Then soon after I saw the PC Gamer scans and even saw the mag itself.

Simply put, the news is a devastating blow for me in considering TOR for purchase.  I know why they're doing it:  Keeping it "simple" for the masses.  But the extent BioWare is doing it is, as Dark Helmet puts it:  Ludicrous.

I'm deeply disappointed that BioWare isn't even willing to try to provide a proper space combat experience for TOR.

I'm swallowing pride when I say this because I dislike SOE.  But SOE's space efforts with SWG's "Jump To Lightspeed" in 2004 already surpasses anything BioWare will do with their space game in TOR.  They're committed to their Rails now.  The cat's out of the bag, and they've poured resources into it already.

I mean... A rail shooter?  In 2010-2011?  The space games from even the 90s already surpassed that.  X-Wing.  TIE Fighter.  X-Wing vs TIE Fighter.  X-Wing Alliance.  Freespace 1 & 2.  And all the expansion packs that each of those 90s games received.  And all top the experience that TORs rail shooter could ever possibly provide.  SWG's JTL provided the ability to customize the equipment of your ship that affected every key facet on your ship.

The big spoiling factor with those older space combat games in contrast to something new like TOR's rail shooter is this.  They provide freedom to the player / pilot.  What course you'll fly.  What maneuvers you will execute.  Weapon selection and usage.  How much into offense or defense you commit to.  Using space features to your advantage (weaving around ships, asteroids, etc. to throw off pursuers, or whatever).  All done when YOU want.

A rail shooter restricts the freedom you get.  You fly what the devs want, nothing more.

"I have only two out of my company and 20 out of some other company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." this makes me angry.  i was one of the people trying to find info on the space combat and hoping they would add it into launch. i played JTL and other star wars games that had space combat/exploration, played EVE. i love space games, part of the cool/fun factor is the freedom to explore! yeah shooting shit is fun to but starfox was cool for only so long until it became boring and repetative.

for a game that is as hyped and expensive as swtor i would of thought bioware, of all companies, would realize the importance of space.  yeah kotor had no space shit except for turret cut battles and a few cgi cut scenes.  but that was back then and this is now, and its a fucking MMO!

for all you people saying at least they added something! or i dont care about the space part anyways! well great job.. now look at what we are all stuck with.

this is STAR WARS, not future land battles with shiney swords.

with 100 million dollars we should expect some awesome mind blowing shit, not this same crap reworked.  i was one of the biggest fanboys of this game in the beginning because im a massive star wars fanatic.  but with how this game is turning out to be i wont be buying this and i hope bioware crashes and burns for what they are trying to do.

which is make you all think this is an mmo when its just a very very elaborate and expensive single player game with the ability to group with a few friends and do battle grounds.

I won't touch this thing with a ten foot pole.  I generally stay away from anything that doesn't seem to be too innovative with dull gameplay.  For MMORPGs I tend to only play virtual world games, not small group no consequence monthly fee games.  It's much more likely that I'll be playing Guild Wars 2.

For myself and only myself-the one major flaw that i used to make is jumping on the text bandwagon. I am going to wait and see what the space combat is like.  I just might enjoy it. I am not happy or sad with what I have read but at this point after 10 years of MMORPG's it really is no big deal to me. I think what BioWare is trying to do is keep space simple and then build from there. It also seems like they are trying to not make anything too complicated and accessible. I want to see some footage first. Trust me if it sucks I will post it sucks! LOL!!! But for BioWares past history I want to see what they have produced first.

This is just starting to convince me more that large IPs should not be translated into MMORPGs. Large IPs are large because they are great and it seems very hard to make a great MMORPGs these days.

Everything seems to be something over-hyped and half-assed in an attempt to get a piece of WoWs 12 million subscriber pie. And so far I have not heard or seen anything about this game that could not might as well be a single player or multiplayer lobby game.

jesus christ you people are ridiculous.

How many games give you any kind of alternate combats? I'd also imagine the space combat is something that would occur in transit. How many games just instantly teleport you to where you're going. (wow's zeppelins and boats)

You know right now this is the only MMO capable of toppling WoW. FFXIV wont do it, it's garbage. And no other MMO is close enough to release. Go back to playing your fag WoW is you think this little bit of info is just going to ruin the game.

This is really kind of troubling.

I'm starting to think that no one on this site has ever played KOTOR.

Or at least that's what it looks like.

    Prove me wrong people.

After reading this article, seems the longer this game is in developement, the more convoluted it becomes.

It's like none of you have played Knights of the Old Republic before. Yes there was space combat. Yes there was space combat on rails. Yes it wasn't fun.

You are in space and there is combat. Bioware in no way have stated they are trying to make an MMOSpaceSim game.

Yes, maybe they shouldn't of bothered with this "half-assed rail shooter" and dedicated more development to the core of the game.

This game is being marketed as an RPG not a Flight Sim. If anything the unhappy people should be pleased there is any space combat in it at all.

I completely agree. Those who are "disappointed" have only yourselves to blame. I would've been happy with something similar to KOTOR during the space sequences.

Could they have waited and brought in something better for space flight? Yeah. And maybe they should have. But space, believe it or not, is only about 25% of any Star Wars lore. Anyone who says otherwise needs to delve into the canon, and that includes Mike B.

Star Wars is, generally, a political odyssey, primarily between two super powers. This backbone affords the storytellers the ability to pretty much go wild with the story. The Yuuzhan Vong storylines are probably the only ones you'll find space combat surpassing planetary combat, and that's only by 5% or so.

Am I a fanboy? Of MMOs, yes. But I've learned, also, not to get my hopes up on ANY MMO that I have yet to play a released version of. Anything other than the announced is speculation. And speculation tends to ruin MMOs.

And? To have several different storylines thrown into one game... what is there to complain about here, folks? If anything, this game will be an awesome RPG, and that's just from the info that's been released thus far. I see this being a really good MMO. I think they spent too much money on voice, but other than that, this game should do great.

    Enough with the bitchy bullcrap.

I dont think this news is very surprising.  The space combat in KOTOR was the same kind of shooter.  I dont know why peope expect this to be a vastly diffrent game than the console versions were.  Everyone wanting WoW in space is going to be very dissapointed; and everyone hoping for KOTOR with an online option is going to be very happy.  Do yourself a favor: play the two console games first.  If you like that style of story telling and squad based combat then youll like TOR; if not, keep looking for another game.  And on a side note, even if you see the space combat as a tack-on mini-game, so was monster play in Lord Of The Rings when everyone started complaining about lack of pvp.  Monster play ended up being supposedly, a very successful element of that game.  Dont see any reason that this couldnt be either.  Personally I really liekd the speeder racing mini games, hope they included a version of that too.

They probly haven't. My guess is they are all SWG fanbois who got pissy about the NGE or CU and never got over it. They continue to moan and complain it isn't an SOE SWG clone and when Bioware does something no one expected IE space combat people get all preachy and moan all over the place even though it is an absolutely amazing addition to the game. You are correct that the author of this article is clueless and not played the KOTOR series as it is obvious by his writing (Dare I guess he has played no Bioware games before). In the end the game isn't meant for everyone, and those looking for space as a core mechanic will enjoy Eve or Jumpgate Evolution when it arrives.

ive tried out the kotor stuff. That said space combat on rails is much better for me then a true sim. I have tried to play true sim flying games on my xbos 360 and i suck at them So as ive posted before the space combat on rails thing doesnt bother me.

Especially since its like 2 pct of the game. Im much more interested in the class system and how that will play out . Just read about the jedi knight class roles and they look  kinda cool. EVerything i read about this game gets me more excited for it.

Being a star wars fan boy not a star wars game fanboy really havent played many of them Im looking forward to a star wars mmo where i can have a jedi or sith in a persistent world . It will be so cool to tank as  a jedi gaurdian or a sith warrior. or heal as a jedi coulsolur or sith inquisitor.

We dont know much about end game but id assume theyd have some end game stuff like wow raids in it. till then im just looking forward to playing a star wars mmo. ps i never heard of star wars galaxies till like 3 months ago and by then it was a game that had crashed and burned. Im really hoping the story is worth it . Im not that concerned with space combat on rails though

Firstoff, his writing obviously got him a spot writing for this website. Secondly, can you guess what your "writing" obviously says?

Hi, I havn't even seen the game mechanic in action much less played it, but I am very upset and I will now throw an internet fit because I am a complete idiot.

*oh its so horrible, im so disapointed, this is the worst game ever created and I can tell just from a single feature and a picture of another game QQ and RAGE*

    /sarcasm

The original knights of the old republic games featured a silly little rail shooter minigame.  The knights of the old republic mmo will feature a silly little rail shooter minigame.

If you are surprised by this "shocking developmnet" please dont breed.  We don't need your dumbspawn pulling us back down the evolutionary lader.

Good article, from the sounds of things it doesent look like ill be buying this game as soon as its released. Im gonna wait and see how things work out for the game. It sounds like SOE's space combat for SW galaxies will be better than this.

Maybe if for some strange reason you can only enjoy star wars games focused on space, or =for some reason cant grasp the fact that this game isnt meant to be focused on space.

Look at space combat on rail this way: what would you think if you can't control your speed nor brake on a swoop racing minigame?

Is that what they are calling it these days, breathing room? I've got a whole list of games for you that has some "breathing room" for you. APB, AoC, Warhammer... lots of early sales of course, and plenty of breathing room shortly after release.

parrotpholk-Because we all know the miracle patch fairy shows up the night before release and sprinkles magic dust on the server to make it allllll better.
