I honestly dont see what the problem is. They are simply taking sections of games which were fun in their own right and combining them into their own product. I believe that this addition will make TOR better then the sum of its parts and add to the immersion value, who cares if there is no exploration, it simply means that Bioware will simply have to put out all the polish it can on te screens it does show us, keep in mind that Bioware is only showing us the beta footage, I am willing to believe what they have shown us lacks the polish the space combat in the actual game will have.  I will stay this if TORs minigame of Space Combat is half as fun as Rebel Assault 2 then Bioware will have succeeded in bringing flavor to its game and making TOR a true legend in the MMO circuit.

    I disagree...

    Quality is better than quantity...

Who cares if they add a million crappy little mini games how does that add anything to the game other than trying to distract you from a crappy main game..

  • HighMarshalHighMarshal Member UncommonPosts: 415

You people do realize that the game is being true to the movies?

Every time in the movies they are in space they are mostly traveling to another planet. This is in the game.

Everytime there is a space battle there is an objective and they fly straight for it. This video shows that. Escape from Hoth, attack the Death Star and so forth are all rail game movie moments.

The vid looks great, however vids can bee misleading.  I sure hope its something similar to the space combat in swg, it kind of looks like it.

GOOD GRIEF... did anyone see that guys' shoulderpads? How horrible. Welcome to WOW 2.0 with all expansions, given the enourmous size of them. *shuggers*

As to space... I dunno. Never was something I cared much one way or the other; but it seems highly symbolic for TOR that the player is put on rails.

Shame for Bioware, real shame. This could have been ultimate deep RPG MMO. Something Bioware would be proud , like Baldurs Gate.

Instead its a casual simplified game aimed at ADD audience.

Someone will say. Yes. But that is what brings the money.

Unfortunately , the failures of recent MMOs prove just the opposite: MMO players want complex , and deep gameplay.

SWTOR is just a wasted opportunity

TOR's space combat part costed indeed 150 mil. And Bioware clearly stated that it will be the games main focus. When players wan't a break from space they can land on one of the 12 planets and experience the games side feature. You know, level a class, experience the story, pvp, raid, craft stuff.

If you wan't to troll at least do it in a semi intellect way.

lolz you my friend, amuse me.

When Star Wars hit the cinemas in the 70's it was a huge success, mostly because they intermingled several kinds of movies into one seamless massive world... it had Spave Battles, it has weapons shooting, it has Sword Duels, it had Romance and Drama... it was many things in one single package (which wasn't usualy done at the time).

I recal reading that they even had to create inovative technologies and filming methods just to do the Space Battles part, since it was, lets face it, dismal at the 70's. Infact it can be said that SW was the pioneer of space battles (that nowdays seems to be all CGI and still not looking as real as the Light and Magic ship models they used).

Putting only 1 aspect of the massive SW world kinda shortens the immersion factor for many ppl... and putting an "Star Fox Clone" (which was obviously an aborted and shelved normal game after someone realized that the game's concept was too outdated to sell in the stores) as a separated mini-game, in what is an blatant last-ditch manouver to try appeasing the "space lovers" before launch, kinda makes me wonder...

It's probably just me but this MMO title seem... whats the better word... hurmm... diminished, perhaps, in it's true magnificence.

Oh well... it's another MMO title to join the rest.

    Silly is very appropriate.

That video sure was underwhelming.  Single-player-style asteroids-like space game-play will appeal to some, but at $15/month?

That, and I can't help but notice that this heavily, heavily instanced game is actually a cleverly designed single-player game with lobbies.

Im going to try it, but cant conceptually get excited about:

    1. No dynamic, player-emphasized, massively multiplayer centric Star Wars space combat, in a Star Wars IP.

    2. Heavily instanced game-play whereby I feel like a rat in a box.

    3. WoW-type battlegrounds that is nothing more than something akin to a single-player, massively-multiplayer lacking game-play.

    4. No death penalty to which I feel as though my game-play, participation, and rewards for winning over losing is meaningful, as opposed to welfare gaming where I win for being a loser and play against suicide gamers that aren’t penalized for losing; no meaningful consequences.

    5. Not a dynamic pve world in which computer controlled pixels are tethered to a leash and just huddled around an encampment time after time; essentially walking up on a whack-a-mole table.

    6. No player-centric, massively-multiplayer important non-combat character emphasis.

    7. Generally, no massively-multiplayer player-driven ecosystem.

    8. No player construction of ships, space-stations, clothing, gear, weapons, tools, items, resourcing or merchandising whereby the player-base and their craftings aren’t more prevalent, sought after, and valued versus a pistol dropping off a rat.

No, thats not a troll, thats how I really feel.

You see, I enjoy action based gameplay,  I like to actually get in there and do something,  dodge and weave through the battle, not clicking around for a half hour just to get something done.

Theres a place for more in depth simulated gameplay,  but that isn't what we saw in Star Wars.

Indeed. I don't see myself playing it at all. It (space) looks clunky and low detail. It looks absolutely awful.

And yet, you're defending an "on rails" shooter where you can't dodge and weave through the battle.

You can dodge and weave in a rail shooter, as you can move up&down as well as left&right.

Turning around or going into a different direction is not possible however.

But would you pay 15$ a month to play the rest of the game? You know, the MMO part? The other 149 million dollar part?

Also, they've stated that only the flashpoints and space-shooter mini-game are instanced; the rest of the world is open.

Actually, come to think of it, your entire post is speculation.

Nah. It does look more fun than EvE. The graphics are better, the combat is faster paced. It looks like fun, especially if there are ways of getting ship upgrades by doing it. But comparing the two is like comparing apples to oranges. EvE is about a power struggle in space between huge corporations. It's about strategy and long term planning. This part of SW:TOR is more like an arcade game. It's just for fun, and it's tacked on just so that the people complaining about no space combat can have it. I'd say it looks pretty representitive of the actual space combat that happened in the movies.

That said however, I am really disappointed by how terrible that fat Sith's outfit looked. Pointy shoulder pads? Are you serious? Not only that but the rest of his outfit was just blah... And your response to him giving you the ship, which didn't seem to have a choice wheel attached to it, makes you seem like a spoiled brat. Any intelligent Sith treats his master with respect until the opportunity arrives to stab them in the back. They don't act like petulant children who expect everything handed to them. I hope this isn't a sign of how all Sith interaction is going to go.

I hate that outfit as well, it looks plain ridiculous :p

The response didn't really strike me as something special, the wheel was probably hidden for the purposes of the vid and you'll have multiple choices.

As a Sith Warrior you basically start out as a member of the higher castes, something like a noble; while as the Sith Inquisitor, you'll be a lowly slave.

It looks absolutely gorgeous, without a doubt. I can't emphasize that enough. It also looks incredibly accessible, like anyone with even a modicum of hand-eye coordination should be able to enjoy this.

That said, it also appears very, very shallow. Not to detract from what may very well be a wonderfully fun side-component of SWTOR's gameplay, but I can't imagine those of us who've been drooling for a revival of the old, Larry Holland X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter genre will find this anywhere near as immersive as we'd hoped.

I shouldn't say I'm disappointed, as this already exceeds my expectations… but yeah, I'm disappointed.
