Personally I've never really payed attention to reviews. I've seen games get great reviews that I hate or feel are nothing new and the oposite as well of course. Some things you have to just find out for yourself. And, if you want to call me a FF fanboy I would like to note the last FF I really played was 10. I treid 11 and couldn't get past the UI and controls at all.
Althugh I know know 14 still is far from good I was still able to figure things out with out using google. And, I like the lower combat and in depth crafting system. Lag will be corrected.

It's a great argument on paper. This is why the GameStop reviewer is so confident when he speaks and writes it. However, in practice, it leads to games being prepackaged, easily digested... boring, I just don't like that.
Thats entirely missing the point. The review stated it quite clearly: The core of the problem is, that under all the clunkyness and grindy tedium there is an "suprisingly simple game". THAT'S why FF XIV is as bad as it is. It PRETENDS to be complex while in reality it's just an infinite grind devoid of meaningful content or real complexity. EVE for example is a game which is infinitly more difficult to get a grasp on than FF XIV. You literally have to spend days just to learn how the basics work and what possibilities there are in the game and that's when the real challenge hasn't even started yet. Thing is that EVE, which is difficult to grasp and not "handholding" at all, becomes very rewarding as soon as you realize how all the mechanisms amount to a greater goal. There's actual skill and brains involved to be good in it. That's one of the many key-elements that are missing in FF XIV.
All things considered FF XIV is bordering on scam in my book and is more akin to your average copy&paste F2P-MMO and nowhere near what should be expected from a AAA-Product. This is why people should be warned about this game before they pay the exceptionally high prices SE dares to demand for this. It's a scam really and should be called accordingly, which is exactly why the gamespot review is so harsh.
I have to agree with what some people have said here. FFXIV was no where near ready to be launched. Its sad that a company like SE couldn't see that. Lately we've seen a number of games go down the drain for not being given enough dev time before launch, Auto Assault, APB, Tabula Rasa... the list goes on. The point is when will devs realize that launching before core content is in the game will destroy their long term reputation with players.
Money is VERY tight for me right now. FFXIV was the last major game I was going to buy untill December and for it to be an unfinished project makes me not only made but want to cancel my subscription right now. The game is no where near complete and its seriously a massive grindfest right now. On the bright side Allods just patched and hey that game is F2P and its about 10x better when it comes to content.
They don't charge any more than most mmo's. it's 12.99 a month and $50 since a brand new game. Am i missing something here?
No but charging $50 and $12 per month is a steep price to ask for a game thats 1/4th complete. They have a small world with nothing in it. I don't think thats a good value.
For me, personally, the review was spot-on. I mean, as far as I had gotten anyway. As soon as the game started teleporting me back to where I started because it obviously didnt want me to go in a certain direction, I logged off. This was in beta, by the way, I kinda knew from then on I wouldn't be buying it anytime soon.
They don't charge any more than most mmo's. it's 12.99 a month and $50 since a brand new game. Am i missing something here?
Wasn't it like 9 bucks subscription for the game and then 3 bucks for each character slot? Meaning that if just playing with 1 character, you'd be paying 12 bucks, but 15 with 2 character slots?
Well, the reason why I thought that was I thought it was sort of funny when I looked down the GameSpot page it didn't show the review score on the main FFXIV page, on the aggregation site page, and I thought it was pretty wierd any official weviewer would write something like, "everything about the economy stinks" and "every aspect of the game is filled with dumb obstacles" because those are really unprofessional things for a real reviewer to write. Then I went into the actual reviewer's user page and looked down to the record of the things he reviewed and, oddly enough, FFXIV wasn't listed.

Okay, the video is a bit more convincing, despite the wierd conflicts to be seen throughout the rest of the site.
Having seen that video, I can see why it's fair enough he said everything he did. Though he exaggerates them a bit much, in my opinion.
I still like the game, though. It's a really wierd review, really, to hear him talking it's like the game is completely unplayable. That simply isn't true.
And you're probably correct, the game is playable for those willing to overlook some of the challenges of an odd interface and enjoy an MMORPG experience that isn't completely oriented around quest based content. These people are few however hence all the negativity around this title I think.
This was one man's review of a game, nothing more, and no more accurate than if you had done one and been a bit more favorable in it.
I compare this to EVE actually, some reviewers absolutely hate it (see Yahtzee for an example) yet in my book, he's completely off base as I quite enjoy the title.
Now perhaps the difference is that you can find quite a few reviewers who give EVE a thumbs up, so overall the trend is positive, whereas we'll have to see how FFXIV shakes out after more results come in.
In the end, doesn't really matter how many reviewers slam the game, or how badly its vilified here in these forums, a year down the road, how many subs do they still have, that's the real measure of success. EVE tanked in the beginning, but has grown and evolved to be a decent niche game.

We shoud not forget that we just get ONE Characterslot for that any other slot costs additional money per month which is ridiculous in my book. Sure, technically you don't need another character but there are many twinkaholics among the MMO-Community who sometimes just want a change of look or race to play with. Why SE is denying that is beyond me really. Perhaps they cba to manage the increased data volume and hassle which would go with it. If you want to change the server, you have to pay. All in all, it's ridiculously overprized for the little that is offered.

I will have to agree with Cold here, you have on multiple occasions attacked posters who didn't agree with your opinion on the game with nothing more than to force your opinion as gospel and paint everyone else as heretics. And most often than not it was an unprovoked attack, sort of like a preemptive strike against naysayers.
Find me an example. I think your memory is highly selective in this regard.
In this thread you make the statement that all Japanese people are polite and "gaijins" are offensive. Does that mean the rapes and murders that happen in the polite Japanese society are less offensive than the ones that happen in gaijin society? Are you implying that anything gaijin is automatically offensive? What leads you to this conclusion?
You paraphrased the ideas of what you learned in your community college to turn your nose up and label your targetted user base as impatient morons. A look into your history shows a chunk of posts defending the unnecessarily complicated game interface by stating that those who can stick through it with you are on a completely different intellectual level than those who can't and wont. What makes you believe that is so?

I suspect the same will hold true for FFXIV
All very true .... but 1 significant difference.
Eve did not have a whole lot of competition during that period you are talking about.
FFXIV has some serious competitors lurking round the corner ...
Not many games charge 15$ and those that do (EVE) are well worth it. On a side note: if you are good enough in EVE you can pay for your entire subscription fee with ingame-money.
And, unlike most games you really only need character to play every aspect of the game.
Says who? What if i want to play more than one race? What if i'm a powergamer who could switch to another character as soon as the dreaded fatigue-system sets in? What if i find that a "jack of all trades, master of none" approach results in a lack of identification with my toon for meand i want to have, say, a crafting and a battle-character?
The point is you aren't suppose to have to "get over" things. I understand no mmos will match your ideals 100%, but having to get over things sounds like you're giving them part of yourself. Don't forget that we're the consumers who give them money. A lot of people agree with what he said in the review...whether or not someone agrees with the final score, what was said is repeated in several reviews across several sites. This level of unpolished, incomplete garbage has been called out. Now it's time for Square Enix to react and overcome.
The thing is, I don't like this argument. Because it's the argument of casual friendliness.

I never listen to reviews and find out if I like things for myself, and IMO thats the way everyone should go about it. I personally don't find the UI to be all that bad, its different but I don't think its as bad as the reviewer made it out to be. Call me a fanboy or whatever I really don't care, I like the game. People just should accept the fact that people have have different standards and like different things. Just because you don't like the game and think its complete shite doesn't make it true.
I do feel that this review and most others are accurately scoring FFXIV for what it is. Its hard to argue that the game is good when most reviews(and players) are calling out all the same issues...which again are consistent in the reviews. I think this review was very accurate
You're not wrong for liking it. You're wrong for going to posts about "Should I buy this game?" and posting everything that's good about the game, but omitting the much larger list of things that aren't good, or at least could be subjective to the player. I've seen you do it many times in these boards. If you want to come in and say "I like it, here's why, but other's don't like it because....", then no one will have a problem with it. As it stands, you're actively trying to pull people into this game without giving them the full story.
You wrong me, sir. In fact, when I saw the "should I play this game" thread, I chose to butt out. It wasn't because I didn't think I could give an unbiased opinion. Rather, it was because I saw that the player was a World of Warcraft player and thought to myself that he may not have been in the appropriate niche, or maybe he was in the appropriate niche despite liking World of Warcraft. I take game recommendations very seriously, and there just wasn't enough information to go on.
I am, however, deeply polarized as a fanboy of the game specifically because I find focusing on the game's general GUI ponderousness, lack of direction, technical issues, or the subjective thing of "fun," to be overexaggeratory.
Pre-judging and dismissing someone simply based on a game they happen to be playing. Wow.
Do the words "book" and "cover" mean anything to you?
I've played FFXI, Shadowbane, Anarchy Online, Asheron's Call, and a wack of other old-school games that are, by far, not "easy mode". I've also played WoW. So, if my more recent gaming involved playing WoW and I came into a forum to ask a question about this game... you would dismiss me outright because you saw WoW associated with me, assuming "I don't fit the niche this game was made for". You'd possibly assume "he wants everything easy mode, wants everything handed to him and doesn't have enough patience"... and you would be 100% wrong.
That post of yours, alone, says more about you than I think you realize. Suffice to say, seems to me you have no right to be criticizing anyone else for their views.

Man that was a rough read. I haven't read a review that bad in some time. I can't believe they called it a step backwards for the entire genre lol.
It's True man i played the game in july i tried to warn people that it was bad even if it was beta just simple stuff was drawn out for no reason i go with ign most of the time for my reviews but gamespot is right on this one. I have been playing mmorpg since 2001 and i knew back when they first announced it was coming out in sept that the game was no where near finished. First the game was announced at E3 2009 by the time it was E3 2010 they barely had any info out on the game and alpha was having problem now you tell me your going to release a mmorpg in 4-5 months and it's suppose to be finish yea right. SE let lot of these fans down people who dislike this game like be probably was rooting for it when they first heard about it i damn sure know i was looks like Rift planes of telara is next on my list all ready looking great in alpha testing.
I wonder why people confuse a User-Interface that overcomplicates simple tasks with "the game is hardcore" (Or rather it not being "easymode" or "holding your hand")?
I do understand that the next person might not be bothered as much with it as much as I was. But this is the year 2010. Things have changed, innovations have been made. Why ignore these things?
