well, the review i have to say is comprehensive and obviously well researched, its clear to see the guy knows what he's talking about.  Given some of the other information thats been leaked to the forums im kind of surprised, as you kind of expect a FF game to be a reasonable success given that the genre itself is quite popular - at least the single player games are, and that they already have an MMO out thats been out for a few years now, and should have given them a fair amount of experience in the developing/running MMO's ... surprisingly they seem to have created an MMO that is in fact, not as good as the one they did earlier... very odd...image

Hmmm... this was disappointing, to say the least. Still, shouldn't have succumbed to the hype; Fantasy Earth Zero and FFXII are both examples of Square trying to make an MMO. Hell, both Tomonobu Itakagi and Keiji Inafune have said that the Japanese game industry's in a sorry state; Square's new IP (Nier) was reviewed poorly; its sequels have also gotten worse (I liked FFXIII, but the first ten hours were pathetic. Front Mission Evolved looks mediocre). Its only consistently good games of late (Kane and Lynch 2, Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light) come from its Eidos arm.

Just saying, we should've been expecting this. Square was the stuff of legends before, but Eidos is the one making great games at the moment.

    This review is spot.

The sad thig is we were saying all this  problems all along the the beta phrases!

Still SE never lissen. The UI tread alone was 2000+ replays long. Still nothing is changed! O_O

This game had such a huge potentional. What a waste.

Kane and Lynch 2 was pretty much universally bombed.  Not sure why you call it a good game...I remember one reviewer calling it, "The same as the original, except not as good" which is pretty searing, considering how badly the first was recieved.

Anyway, I like the game...and I've accepted I'm going to be in the minority.

I'll take it a step further and say the entire slide started the minute Squaresoft got into bed with Enix in the first place.  I played both Enix and Squaresoft and have always been partial to Squares games Enix a clear number two, all of a sudden they merge and can't release a decent mainstream game to save there lives.  I haven't even been compelled to try out any of the FF console games since this merger which for me has been the creative equavilent of AOL merging with Time Warner, total fail.

As far as this mmo goes there are certainly some puzzling decisions made such as the mystery surrounding what you are supposed to be doing in the game, am I the only one who can see how much money they save by deciding not to tell anyone how to play the game, not having an in depth tutorial?  And am I the only who figures that may be the biggest reason (other than they just did not have any of that ready) to dump your entire player base into the game and not tell them what to do?

For the life of me I can't remember one person saying "I want to play a game where I have absolutely no clue what I'm supposed to be doing for atleast ten hours or so, a stepp learning curve is one thing but when people can't get started five minutes in unless by sheer luck that is just plain foolish.

To my knowledge companies don't unmerge so I am fairly certain that my love affair with Final Fantasy is a thing of the past.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Most of the things in this game makes no sense anyways; it is as if programmers were on crack while making FFXIV. Even crafting the most fun part seems like a sick joke. You need to kill a lvl 50 raptor to make a lvl 15 belt. You need a lvl 25 black smith and lvl 25 armorer to make lvl 7 tools? i mean really? for the item which needs lvl 1 carpenter to make you first need mats from other crafting skills which are atleast lvl 15 or above... there is no thought no balance in anything. And the market ward mess only makes it worse to find materials that you need.

This game has a long way to go before it can be fixed. Sometimes FFXIV feels like a sick joke to me, conceived and unleashed on masses just to see them get frustrated and quit in rage.

I've never run into any of the things you've mentioned...most of my crafting has been fairly mundane up to this point.  I'm thinking you are making up stories again.

First of all, GAMESTOP and GAMESPOT is not the same thing.

And secondly, the review couldn't be any more accurate, everyone thinking of obtaining the game should atleast check this review before handing them your hard earned money!

the video review by the same guy..

    http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/finalfantasy14/video/6281074/final-fantasy-xiv-online-video-review

take your rose colored glasses off before viewing.

Okay, the video is a bit more convincing, despite the wierd conflicts to be seen throughout the rest of the site.

Having seen that video, I can see why it's fair enough he said everything he did.  Though he exaggerates them a bit much, in my opinion.

I still like the game, though.  It's a really wierd review, really, to hear him talking it's like the game is completely unplayable.  That simply isn't true.

Honestly I as an objective voice of reason one who has neither been burned by paying for this game and an account nor as a person who played and enjoyed the game can say that the reviewer does a good job of pointing out the flaws I've seen people attribute to this game since the beta launched.  I'm looking for what in the review gave you the sense that the reviewer was trying to make the game seem completely unplayable?

I even recall a line where he says the things you do in the first five hours are what you'll be doing twelve hours in doesn't sound like anything to do with being unplayable just not fun.

    @Tsukieu
Do you even play the game or what? maybe spend less time here and play more to know wtf i am talking about?
    http://ffxiv.yg.com/recipe/dodoskin-field-belt?id=1340
Lvl 50 raptors have the best drop rate to make raptor snew cord used for making lvl 15 belt.

    http://ffxiv.yg.com/item/undyed-canvas?id=10005010
Undyed canvas which need weaver lvl 21 and yes it is made for LVL 7 black smiths tool. Not only that you also need Black Smith 11 to make bronze hammer head, where as to put everything together you only need Black Smith rank 1. Does this recepie even make sense?

And there are many other examples i can give you if you like. Please go play FFXIV first so that we can have a proper discussion.

4/10 is pretty generious. or maybe just about on the mark.

"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words."

Yeah, they even gave it a 4.0. And I don't know how much it would affect SE's reputation.

SE's rep is already in the gutter, it started soon as Ps2 hit.

The problem with this is lag and the server being in japan mainly, isin't much they can really do. I still think they should have had some USA hosted servers for the NA players.

Agree there's no reason to have an unlocalized server for a game of this magnitude.

Well a review is a review nothing to say against this, just being amused how selective people are in general, like a positive review ist stated to be relyable by all  people that dislike the game and and the ones that are negative like this one are not taken serious that like the game. Like me that personally still like the game.

But I guess some people need it for compensation to know blow up the trhead for 18 pages and drooling on the floor by finding a review that fits their opinion.

I have nothing against the review but it is kind of sick how some people here are drooling on the floor it is just disgusting.

I made alot of positive posts about this game on this forum.

But I take it all back,  This Gamestop reviewer was 100% spot on.   I dont log in to ff14 anymore because it feels like a choir.

I happen to think the game is fun, daily quests, grinding, gathering, crafting, and all.  Where does that leave us?

It leaves me questioning your judgement. Yet again :)

Sorry.  It really sucks when you realize you spent good money on snake oil.  You can take solace in the fact you aren't alone.  A couple more weeks and you can add "empty" to the list of things people will complain about.

Heh, yes, I agree and I noticed it too.

Well, I'm pretty neutral in that I try to read positive as well as negative reviews in a proper perspective and without prejudice as much as possible. But I admit that I have a natural dislike towards people who can be gleeful about bad reviews and who are determined to convince other gamers that if they're enjoying a game then that it's wrong, merely because they themselves didn't enjoy the game.

    Ironic. Intriguing to watch though.

Yeah, I noticed it too. XFire has gotten worse lately. I understood that it was taken over recently and the new owners are still getting up to speed, meaning new entries are slower added.

Anyway, I hear more and more people talk about Raptr, too bad raptr doesn't have measuring like Xfire does.
