Guild wars is basically a conglomerate of shards of instances- it is impossible for all players to be in the same area of the world at one time, it is also impossible, with instances, to allow players to change the world.

By your definition EQ2 is not an mmorpg as it has instanced zones.  Should they remove it from this site also?

From what i have read everyone has different opinions regarding Guild Wars. We should all take a step back and look at the big picture wich is that Guild Wars has more in common with a MMORPG than a MMOCRPG ore what ever. The fact that you get different groups standing in the same area without seeing each other is due to the fact that they are on a quest, on the Guild Wars forum they said that they created this system to help with the high latency and kill stealing that could lead to a failed quest.

Imagine it this way how would you like to lose a super duper item because someone killed your monster or because latency affected you so much that u can't defend your self and you get killed wich leads to a failed quest loss of experience and items that you could have got.

Let's look at this system as a positive thing because that is why it was created to improve gaming, for social meeting you can use the towns and the outposts Guild Wars does not eliminate the human interaction that you find in a MMORPG.

Maybe these diffrences make Guild Wars unique is a sign of progress in the MMORPG world because we should progress instead of sticking with whatever worked in the past.

Thats how i see the problem.

    Peace!

Every game that has character creation (class/skills/faces/clothes/avatar). It has some kind of LORE you can RP on and has 1000+ players on 1 server = mmorpg.  The only part that is not fully taken in GW is the LORE. There is LORE but I am not expecting much of RP with these game mechanics.

Do not know why you take on GW that is not mmorpg? Because you cant walk everywhere you want and get ganked by 99lvl ?! Because you do not need to grind 2 months to PvP? It is new kind of mmorpg and a fresh start for the whole genre. If you do not like it no one makes you buy it. WoW and EQ2 are alternatives and more fantasy games are coming.

"MMORPG: All players interact and exist in the same world"

Well then most of teh games on this site are not mmorpgs. In most games tehre are several servers and you can only interact with the people on your server. In a game like WoW any given character can only interact with a very small population of the overall playing population due to thre being so many servers.

In contrast guild wars only actually has one server and any given char can interact with any other char that exists in GW with no exceptions.

According to this criteria guild wars is more of an mmorpg than most of the "true" mmorpgs.

My opinion? MMORPG, CORPG, MOCRPG....Who gives a F*ck! If its not an mmorpg then its still the same general genre.

All of the questions since about the end of page 5 have already been answered and all of the statements have already been addressed. I refuse to repeat myself. The "MMORPG... hmm.. its massive, multiplayer, online, role playing, and its a game!' statement has already been addressed by me (in fact, it was posted on the first page by a player's post whom was deleted!) Ever since this has become a popular post, it seems we have began to have a large influx of players who have no idea whats going on and simply comment on a sliver of what has been discussed.

DO NOT POST STATEMENTS ON THE UNDERLYING DISCUSSION AT HAND UNLESS YOU HAVE READ THE ENTIRE POST. DO NOT COMMENT ON MERELY PARTS OF THE POST. I WILL ONLY DISCUSS NEW STATEMENTS, ITEMS, AND COMMENTS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN BROUGHT UP YET. NO REPITITION OF DISCUSSION.

I'm not going to go in circles with this argument- this is my final statement on the underlying discussion unless new comments are made. If you cannot find a direct answer for your question or infer an answer from my statements then you will never know because I refuse to answer or reply to things that have already been discussed.

It'd be nice if the Adminstrators could give out some type of word on this so we can stop getting non-constructive comments and questions that have already been asked, but that may be too Nazi to say what can and cannot be said like I am doing ;)- it gets annoying, though, when I try to carry-on a conversation and I am being pulled back by the same questions and comments that have already been answered over and over and over again.

Can't be arsed to read the entire thread but I do agree with what threadstarter Instago wrote, from what I've heard it's not a true MMORPG and a 3D chatroom doesn't make it one. But that doesn't really matter since Diablo2 was fun too even though it wouldn't fall into that category either. What I don't understand is why you daft fanboys have to bash him for that, undermine his opinion and so forth. People want to inform themselves on the game and all they get is your bloody hype and misleading information. Most of you will probably have moved on in a month or so anyway so what's it to you?

The big lesson here may be that labels suck and don't always work.

I personally only ever played Diablo/D2 solo, so the concept of that being a MMORPG doesn't work for me ...  for one thing it wasn't "massive" and it was pretty linear.

But for people who played it as a group experience ... I can see why that argument is coming up.

I do agree with the folks who think this is a dumb subject.  But it's still something to talk about.  It gets people riled up because once they've labeled something (or someone), it's hard as heck to get them to change their minds or be flexible about it anymore.

Guild Wars is a great game.  World of Warcraft is a great game.  They are more similar than they are different (I mean you know, when compared to other games like SWAT or Leisure Suit Larry or Baldur's Gate) ... but the bottom line is that they're both just fun games to play.

So I hereby label Guild Wars as AFGTP.  A fun game to play.

  • RadiationStormRadiationStorm Member Posts: 120

That does sound good, but someone else said it does in fact have similarities to Baldurs Gate, not sure what to believe now. That's what's so annoying about this game because withouth undermining your or any other person's opinion it's really hard to get a straight picture. We need a demo I think...

To answer your first question- it concerns me because it is listed on a website of MMORPGs while it is not an mmorpg- if Starcraft, Age of Empires, Counter-strike, or Diablo 2 was listed on a website that is all about MMORPGs, what would you do? Likewise- if a RTS is listed on www.superduperfpsgames.com (not a real website, using this as an example) what would you do?
    [/b][/quote]

This site is for Online Roleplaying games, and Guild Wars is just that.

This genre is undergoing alot of changes, but all games are still known as MMORPG's for now until more games that are very different come out.

Amen.  The only reason it's slapped with the "MMO" label is because it's convenient for people that care about labels.  I, for one, care about having fun.  This game is fun.  Getting hung up on labels and categorization isn't.

Guild Wars is still an MMO.

Ya, for real, I don't understand what the big argument is about. Who cares if Guild Wars is technically a MMORPG or not? Its a great game, and that's enough for me. I really don't get what the big hang up is over...could someone explain it to me maybe?
  • VontroxVontrox Member Posts: 12

I agree with Polar, who cares....it is fun and i enjoy it. It isn't EQ2 or any other online RPG. it is free and it is fun.

  • VodalusVodalus Member Posts: 103

Yeh....uh...quit being such total nerds guys. What difference does it make? Are you in soem sort of "we only play MMORPGs" cult?

This thread is getting oldimage...the argument of MMORPG or not has been overworked. Who cares....seriously...the game is good and thats all that really counts. The MAIN facted that it's on this site is because you can play and ONLY PLAY ONLINE(unlike D2).The best way to categorize this game is:

    category: MMORPG

sub-category:CORPG(which we might see more of in the near futur)image

    GW---> (Ranger/Mesmer)Dark Raziel

  • U know d2 isnt exactly like this game. The game almost same as gw is neverwinter nights. U attack use skills can have pets, cap 20 lvl, skills place in skill bar hmmp... lol and its 3d ahahahhaa

Its an online game only. Since it can host many players, its rpg, mmorpg is prbably its best classification to it.

  • RadiationStormRadiationStorm Member Posts: 120

I didn't like NWN for some reason. I don't think the arguement is if it's a MMORPG or not it's on what people come to expect when it's categorized like that. Yes, it's online, it's a game, has some reoleplaying even if not traditional but massively, hm single parties aren't really massive. That is somewhat misleading, if one wants to be nitpicky. But otherwise agree it's a useless debate.

Instago... through a couple of your posts I can tell you have not played Guild Wars.  You say that an mmorpg involves making wide sweeping changes to a game world.  There is no game out there that does this.  How would you like to get into a game 3 months after everyone and have everything finished so you cant do anythin?  You wouldnt, nor would anyone else.  Yet with guild wars I go through a particular area and I complete x, y, and z quests that make vast changes to the instances that were spawned with me.  I then later go through the same area with a couple other players.  They will see that the charr have been driven back and no longer spawn in an area because of the changes that I wrought upon the game world etc.  Then if they want to go and drive back the charr themselves they can without me as their instance will be different.

There is no way to make a true mmorpg.  Most of those that are out there dont even have RP as part of the game and are nothing more than Massively Multiplayer TreadMills that have a crappy veneer of a story slapped on top as a means to get you to pay x amount of dollars per month to come back and continue doing the same thing over and over again.

The one thing that makes Guild Wars really shine is that numb nut pale basement dwelling leet dweebs arent the end all be all because it doesnt matter so much what phat lewt you sat there camping for several hundred hours to get you will get your ass handed to you by a more skillful player.  And that player may have 1/100th of the time invested than the jobless scum that infest most of these games.

Is guild wars perfect, no far from it.  But it is a step ahead whereas most of the games released have been nothing but clones made by lazy dev teams that are driven more by the dollar then the coders of old who were there to tell a story.  Go back to your Everquests and WoWs your opinions are biased and your logic is faulty.

No game out there can live up to your definition of what an mmo should be so, to follow your argument, this site should be shut down.  Just because if you come through where I am grinding on beasties and you see that I killed a goblin does not make for a change to the entire game world.  I can go and kill the mother of all goblins but 10 or 15 minutes later she'll be back.   Go think about it and the holes in your argument if you want to have a discussion.  Otherwise you are a troll.  Good day.
