Would be nice to get a key but this game is pulling a lot interest so it's understandably hard to get a key.
Agreed, but I think I would prefer if you just put your name on a list and someone randomly give 100 keys instead of handling it like this, that has worked fine before.
It is a bit suspicious that so many people get it in the right time for their first post, a few is fine but many of us that spend a lot time at the forum never gets in on time and if so many new users do it seems like some people are manipulating the poll.
Let's hope it isn't a single guy who sells them.
True. But mmorpg.com, in this case, is not about community. It's about traffic, add-clicks. If the give-aways on mmorpg.com or rift.com were about community, they would treat it as such, but it's not about community; again, it's about traffic.
My BF and I both registered yesterday and got beta keys, but have been following Rift since mid 2009 and a member of the official Rift forum since the day it started if that makes you feel better. I haven't really visited this site too often in the past, but because of the promotion I have stuck around to see what it offers and will be sticking around to check it out from now on, although I probably still won't post much
Good luck for today and tomorrow for those of you still trying to get a copy!
You can always go to ebay and get your VIP pass for $50.
There is a guy here who registered, then subsequently deleted his account just to get keys to sell on ebay.
MikeB, is this the kind of new members you're looking for over your established member base that actually contributes to the site? If you want, I can PM you the user info so maybe you can prevent him from scamming more keys from people that actually want them to use rather than profit from them.

Rift isn't something that interested me so I didn't particularly care that the keys went so fast. But I am annoyed because of this thread. If what you guys are saying is true, then that's absolutely ridiculous. People that registered just recently with 1 post or so OBVIOUSLY did so just to get a key. That's completely unfair to people who actually actively participate.
There are other MMO forums that only give keys to people who have at least showed mild activity (100 posts or so). It's supposed to be a community, after all. I don't see why they couldn't do that, at least for the high-profile games like this where the amount of keys given out is so low.

not ready to buy one here, I mean you don't have to forget that the main goal is testing (even though is it still nowadays) and provide work and feedback as well. Even though it's much less demanding than single player tests and as much as I'd like to get my hands on rift, I suppose I'll just wait and hope other do the job and nag some of course about how I always arrive 1 minute late at any giveaway
Hell with it - I'll just buy a beta key somewhere for $5 like I've done before.
Edit - The only one on Ebay is $30!!!!!
I'm not allowed to post links or I would, but the particular person I am speaking of is selling his keys for $45 dollars actually and has(had) 3 left as of my previous post.
The funny part is if you want to pay for them, you can go join ten ton hammers premium services for $20USD and get a key, so essentially $20 for a key.
Einherjar_LC says: WTB the true successor to UO or Asheron's Call pst!
It's amusing how a fair share of users that are telling people to calm down or that they are overreacting are ones that have said they have keys or if they havent's aid anything, probably still do.
I don't see it as whether the contest was fair, as it was explicitly mentioned as being first come first serve. I do see it as a stab at those of us who actively participate in the forums or anywhere on the site both here at MMORPG.com and at the Official Rift Forums. I don't expect it to be a behind closed doors giveaway where only X number of posts vets get it or where you have to have a degree in computer programming and astrophysics, but I would expect some level of exclusiveness so that the privilege of being a part of a stress test isn't abused.
So while I am not going to moan about the contest itself conducted here, I am going to say that there were probably better alternatives.
I think the problem is that Betas are not Betas anymore... that was long... long ago, nowadays a beta is a free trial, a chance to try the game before it's out. How many of the "beta" testers still file bugreports, document how to reproduce a bug they found, or even actively participate on the forums? 70% of them install, try the game, and then uninstall cause "it's so buggy", and "it's gonna fail anyway". 20% test it until it goes live, and another 10% maybe actively do anything... It's just how it is, and MMORPG with their "100 first" jumps on the bandwaggon, turning a beta from a chance for the community to help improve a game to an event to get free trials...
This is why I'm not going to worry about getting one of these Rift VIP beta keys. I've been following this game since they renamed it Rift in April and I'd love to see it in action, but I'm not keen on these 'throwing the meat to the lions' competitions.
There's been so much of it on numerous sites from Trion and it has actually lowered my esteem of them somewhat. They do the odd good competition but there's far too much baiting.
I'll just wait for the good old thing called release.

It's pitiful.
You are wrong. But I'm not going to tell you why since you already have your mind made up.
Just going to tell you one thing.
MMO devloping have come a long way, devs don't need every tester to contribute they have meassures to do so passively, even though if a tester does not report one simple thing he contribute by playing the content.

I'm not seeing this out of the point of view of the company though, I am quite aware a games debug mode and the typical stress test offers a good amount of information, but to say it as ArenaNet does (taken from Wikipedia, as they took the original statement down)
ArenaNet considered that player expectations for open beta tests of MMORPG had changed, and the beta was no longer used to test the game but to trial a nearly finished game prior to purchase
Thus the reason why GW2 will have a "betatest" very close to the full release, and it will be considered a trial for them, so they said. It's the point of view of the so called betatesters that is pitiful, I remember, being a betatester for APB (and trying my damn best to make that game worthwile... and obviously failing) how the community treated the newly arrived Fileplanet-Betatesters... I don't think I have to detail that here, as you can probably quite imagine.
And seeing how the Rift community is treated, and how VIP-beta-accounts for all beta-states (which is already an odd phenomenon, seeing that you would have beta-accounts that download the software yet only play in very limited timeframes) are handed out like precious fan-packages, I simply feel like we should stop calling these things Beta. Or our understanding of the word has to change. Please feel free to correct me on that point of view, I know some share it, I know some don't... But I think we can all agree that ignoring the active community, the active forum members and everyone who is interested in the game, and handing codes out to those that hammer the fastest on F5 is wrong.

You are completely right. I have sent emails to certain people working here at MMORPG.com and I still get the same almost autmated BS excuses of how things are done. The right way would have been to have the first 100 work this way , and reserve the other 400 to active members, not just one day wonder F5 mashing people that have all the time in the world to sit here. Hell I wonder if many of them wore Depends to make it through the time they waited. Most people have lives and can t commit this time to that, but they don t give a crap at all.

I think it's funny though, the one day that the working people have time to do this, they don't do it. They only do it on "working" days, so those taking the typical 9 to 5 job have no chance. Just hate that decision.

Yep, it was a piss poor decision. I m still waiting to see what they re going to do for us long time users as they said they ll see what they can do. I m guessing piss all, but we ll see I guess.
This whole Beta thing really has givin me a bad taste in my mouth for Rift. The way there using it is very silly and who's ever idea it is showing they have no idea what there doing.
I just hope whoever gets the keys really uses there Beta key like there supposed to and not for the reason of playing a free game for a while.
Even if they did reserve the beta for just members there would be people saying they deserve it more b/c they have an earlier signup date. A guy from 04 is probably going to complain that the guy who has been on the site for 8 months got a key over him..

Doesn't really matter. The Alpha has long been in place in Rift. They invited the people they really wanted to test their game months ago. All this stuff coming up is basically a stress test.
So the only thing I got out of this entire thread, from beginnign to end, was, its not about how long/loyal people have been in this thread, or who got a key, and who didnt, its just a complaint about fairness.
So why, going through this whole thread again, from beginning to end, less than 1/2 way through this thread does it get turned into "I have been here since such an such a yr, and I got nothing, I want to be compensated for being a member, I want the key that was to be mine".
I mean seriously, you can go back and see where it turns into what everyone was argueing what this thread WASNT about.
No i didnt apply for a key and got one to write this, I didnt apply period, i rarely ever apply for contests, I just like the good reads now and then, but you can clearly see what this thread is really about:
"I have been here before you, and you, and you, and I should have been handed a key personally, and now im pissed"
You guys look like tools turning into children for having stood as low as you all have in fighting about how deep down you are angry you got beat out by anyone else period for a key for rift.
A game is just that... a game, not an emotional crutch.

No keys are being given out today, it resumes tomorrow.
Now you can spend your day doing something else besides spamming F5 to beat out the one post wonder scammers.

Nope, no keys today.
Contest will resume tomorrow at a mystery time.
You have a whole day to hone your F5 skills in preparation for tomorrow.
