Any new game feature other than get to 85 then grind gear?

chriselchrisel Member UncommonPosts: 990

I am not interested in the same old same old World of Warcraft, so my question is simple; Are there any new game features? Or is this game still all about grinding gear? My sub runs out tomorrow, maybe someone here could tell me theres something for me in it now with it's Cataclysm release, cause I am not interested in playing the game just to get to level 85 then start (again) grind gear.

Maybe it now could offer:

-Politics?

-Housings?

-World PvP that matter?

-Player cities?

-etc etc

Make us care MORE about our faction & world pvp!

It's the same game. This is just a xpack. It makes the game a bit better but not different.

Having logged in briefly, I can confirm that it is still a themepark MMO and that shockingly they didn't rewrite the entire game to a free world sandbox MMO in the last year.

You want any of these? Well, WoW never had them and never will for obvious reasons. Just curious, you trolling or something? :D

Wolrd PvP that mattter - I always love this. Makes me all fuzzy inside. Sounds like gank more, gank more and have consequences, aka lets loot the victim's corpse and make them lose a few months worth of progress.

He doesn't mean this. He means World PvP with objectives, something that would drive people to do it.

WoW could implement most of the features listed by the OP, it's not funny at all...

World PvP with objectives (like a poster mentioned above), dynamic horde/alliance events for controlling certain areas? GM controlled alliance/horde boss mobs with guards, escorting important characters to places, delivering resources to places... I'm sure more could be added/done

Player houses, instanced most likely for WoW but easily done just like the old PvP rewards place in SW. Customise your house, interact with your house, earn trophies to place there? All would be a nice touch.

Player cities probably not for WoW with it's set lore and areas. Sieging down NPC cities in faction war zones as dynamic events / war efforts? Perhapes. Rebuilding afterwards ofc.

Politics could be done in the form of advancing an exisiting factions agenda through quests/grinding/objectives. Guilds could obtain political clought for server firsts or high PvP scores? What it would lead to is to be considered though.

WoW doesn't have these features because they're impossible to add, it's simply because they have a fine working game with a huge memberbase they don't need to innovate their game. More of the same keeps WoW players content and paying. Why risk upsetting that balance / making an effort.

Why not? why would Blizzard would make it different? everything is working fine isn't it? why to make unnecessary radical changes?

Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible

Super Mario Bros. was also working just fine. Should have ended it there.

Comparing MMO to a single player console game? really?

I agree. Why make the game a different game. They have a devoted following of a sizeable amount of people.

It's a quest game with raids and battleground pvp with some open world pvp for those who want it.

I dont' understand the "grind for gear" mentality. I have never ground for gear in WoW. JJust logged in, did soem quests, logged off.

Perhaps if people apporoached the game differently they would enjoy it more and feel less like they have to keep up with the joneses.

Any game for that matter. People can take from these games what they want (within the content offered) they don't have to just say "ok, top gear is x so I will do y in order to get it" and then stand in the town square showing it offf for all the world.

Tell me why it doesn't apply?

Gaming is a part of the experience industry. People are looking for experiences. Repeating the same game for 5 years is not an experience after the 100th time you've done it. New and different experiences keeps it fresh.

Why does Blizzard keep releasing raids with different bosses and objectives? They were working just fine, why change anything?

I'm saying an expansion pack should take it much further. Otherwise the game just becomes stale. Just like playing the same Super Mario Bros. in different environment becomes stale after the 10th incarnation.

People don't seem to understand this simple concept.

Thats the big failing with WOW, as a fairly casual guild (ex leader) we used to go raidin, make slow but steady progress, get towards getting the instance complete and ready for more regular farming.... and blizzard would come along and allow us to get the same level gear as we worked hard for, by running 0 challenge h.eroics repeatedly.

To confirm, i went back for 7 days free from blizzard, my paladin was standing in nax 10/25 gear and blues... i ran 10 random heroics in less than 2 hours, i ended up replacing half my gear with level 245+ items. my 2/3 months in nax negated in a few hours. And because of hte gear bypass im never, ever going ot be bale to experience ulduar etc at the difficulty it was intended.

Everythign in WOW is disposable, even legendary items which by all means should be bale to be used to show of oyur achievement, but no, they go in the bank or are vendored or whatever.

You sure you understand the simple concept behind WOW's success? everything works. that is the simplest explanation. If Blizzard was bleeding subs or incurring losses i would understand their need to make some radical changes to game to attract more customers. As far as being stale, we have been hearing this since BC expansion. But over the years the subs have only gone up not down.

Players who love WOW want same of more. As long as the quality and polish is there it doesn't matter to them. You can't blame Blizzard for playing safe. like i said when they are raking in so much money with what they got, why to take unnecessary risks?

Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

As far as player housing goes, I remember it was at first an idea tossed around, but slowly got delayed until it was scrapped completely (as with several things that were in the plans in classic WoW).  The determination came that it was just not worth the effort to do instanced housing.  non-instanced housing would not work as there simply is no room.  player cities are the same.

For world PvP, I think it would be awesome for WoW to find some way to incorporate more open world pvp, but the non-instanced part of WoW is created as a PvE story-driven landscape-which is what it was in classic and has been furthered with phasing in wrath and cata.

I don't know if I'm going to be playing Cata for a while as I just am not eager to grind heroics/raids for gear again.  I'm sure ill play it eventually because WoW owns a controlling interest in my soul, but it is looking like mostly more of the same general play (which isn't a bad thing since the game is good, so don't hate me for saying that).

I'm not blaming them, but "it's just an xpack" excuse doesn't fly. I am also going to criticise them for not taking "unnecessary risks" even if I understand why, because that's what's killing this industry, especially this part of the industry.

Also, as far as I remember they had new ideas for this xpack, then they scrapped them. What the hell!

There are few factors leading to it.

    • News websites dedicated to WoW give a lot of coverage to achievements or server firsts. Let's wait and see who's going to be the world first level 85.

    • Up to now, Blizzard has spent most of its time working on a new tier or a new expansion pack. Little to no attention is given to everything before. Worse, they trivialize older content to make it easier for their customer to reach the latest tier.

    • Most social aspects of the game are dominated by End Game.

I also suspect those able to log in, do quests and enjoy their journey are not likely to follow any news websites such as this one ;-)

Hah yeah I just saw that. Well that makes it easy. Just look at how 'big' is this news, and how so many readers are going to that thread. Stuff like that is responsible for the death of the journey in MMOs, in my opinion.

Wow really lacks any endgame so to speak, you raid for gear, juat to do a higher raid for more gear adinfinitum, but what else does the gear really do for you besides letting you into higher raids? nothing. I'd like some forced world pvp endgame. something else to do other than some pve craps over and over.

"An MMORPG could be completely diffirent from WoW. Just look at games like Dofus, Wizard101 or EVE. But as it is, most of the Western MMOs are trying to succeed by out-WoWing WoW. It's like an army of 10 sports games made about same sports, and barely none about other sports. WoW clone is an accurate description of those games, it manages to convey much information with only two words."
