MMORPG.com columnist Bill Murphy has spent some time with Rift. Bill gives our readers a look at the game and offers a few thoughts about his experiences in Telara. Check them out and then let us know what you think in the comments section below.
I spent my time with Rift playing a Defiant of the Rogue archetype. My first soul choice was that of the Nightblade. I’d spent some time with that soul at E3 and it really is a nice take on the rogue using a combo point system that is similar to what we see in World of Warcraft. No matter which type of rogue you choose to play as (Assassin, Saboteur, Ranger, etc.) you’ll be using this combo point mechanic which allows you to unleash extremely powerful attacks depending on how many combo points you’ve stacked on an enemy (maximum of five). Anyone who is familiar with MMOs will quickly find themselves at home in Rift.

Objective, honest and critical.
This article is not.
What cause he didn't agree with you? It was a good article displaying the pro's and con's of his beta experience.
I agree on the soul system and ROLES wil be the WIN for this game.
I started a warrior Champion(dps), then got a Warlord(support/tank) soul (yeah, weird combination), when hit lvl 20 people went screaming for tank, and none aroud, what i did? when to npc, spend some gold (wich would be silver in wow) and ban!!!, now im a tank, run the group through the instance then *click* im dps again, no need so spend ridiculous amount of money to re-spec, no need to go to npc change your role, u buy, u click and thats it XD

How come the rift gift aren't worth it? If you pass around all the Rifts you see, it's normal you can't get the items... Anyway, I can just say I had more than enough of the other currency and I can only say that I got some shinny items drop from the rifts too...

In my opinion, this game does NOT have the "it" factor. No where near even close to having it. It's far too shallow.
That all depends of the players... For me it had it and now I am stuck waiting and can't play anything

Yeah usually when the writer doesn't confirm to your likes and dislikes he or she is never objective or honest. Tell us something new.
Who could have thought that WOW could bring super power like USA to its knees?

Im picking on WoW btw because its the beast that made all of this possible
UI responsiveness - At times is horrific, feels more clunky than not. Best similarity would be WAR upon release.
Soul trees - Feel little more than WoWs talent tress, there is a bit more them I won't deny that, but to say this is anything new is stretching the truth.
Classes feel very 'samey'.
Rifts - If you have seen WARs PQ system the rifts will feel very simialr. Very.
Immersion - You are lead by the hand from quest hub 1 to 2 to 3. Never once did I feel like I was in a living world, though I did think I was in a singleplayer game several times. The quest system feels even more linear and on the rails than WoWs and that is an achievement. Never once did I forget I was playing a game, and an eerily familiar one despite the new locales and different graphics.
Some people will love the game, good for them and I hope that the game does well, but this whole article felt like it was hyping and selling the game rather than previewing it.
Now some things may change before release, but as things are improved my opinion will change, I won't smudge the truth in the faith that it will be all sorted by release.
-Delete this post if you feel it infringes on the NDA-
as it is now rift is nothing more than a singleplayer RPG (and have yet to enjoy the weird over fed quest system of MMOs - too many, too shallow and too easy to complete) with the rifts ontop.....
rifts themself being very generic - fun at first but gets old very soon, and that word complex make me wonder what game they played, nothing complex about it....or rather no mystery to make it feel complex....everything in the beta is grabbing you by the nose and pull you to where you are supposed to be - the evolved rifts is the only fun in rifts to me
well its in "advertise beta" but they could still improve the game - as is now I d not even think of buying it tho, no way I d promote a MMO that doesnt provide a MMO experience, but a trivial version of what singleplayer RPGs can provide.
Howdy all,
We screwed up on the NDA Drop date and will re-post this article tomorrow morning. We've taken it down for now. Sorry about that!

so there dropping the nda? thats kind of really soon
How do you re-launch or newly launch, having a new brand with a differnet name, homoginized milk as the new and improved milk, when, well, it's homoginized milk?
"...so that as long as a player reads the quest-text they’ll find themselves rather engaged with what they’re doing."
Here's the thing. There's absolutely no need to read the quest text. At all.
I found myself clicking on the !, looking at the quest helper which tells you exactly where to go with a big lit circle on the map, killing '10 of xyz' of which I found were the majority of quests/tasks, then going back to generic NPC no. 14. Questing is dull. There's one quest on Defiant side - and testers will know which one - that is the bright spot.
This game is strictly on rails aside from the Rifts as a side-diversion. The map is linear, the story, NPCs generic, the 'quests' - should be re-labelled as chores - so easy that they should be marked for 4 years old and above.
The game is polished, smooth, mostly bug free. It's just so very uninspired.
NDA is over, yes. Go nuts.
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
my sum up: nice game, not perfect, nothing really new, just very polished so far probally at launch will be even better. Now just need to try the pvp.

LOL,...you dont mean "nuts"....dont tease this community
the rifts themself is completely identical at this point, you have 5 stages with a mix of solo and multi target rounds on the fifth round the named spawn - gets old very soon, there is no touch of suprise to them, and since personally hate the generic and boring solo quests dont feel any reason to sweat over closing them, and doubt the kind of players that will like RIFT, will find the rifts and especially invasions that great, since they kill quest givers, and cant be closed solo, think they are meant to be killed by 1 group - 5 players at this point - the rifts themself you can, bet tho this will get nerfed once enough whining people on the forums ruin the only aspect that is somewhat intresting in this game.
soultree´s well they have done some good changes for the combat system, even if by far good yet....but way way better than in beta 1, so got some faith in they will make the soultree´s more diverse and more intresting over all.
over all as it stands now its a game focused toward solo players, with afew good invasions - that you may like if you are into the overall gameplay, the test massive invasion, were the only time throughout the entire 2 weekends of beta that I found great....due to them really being MASSIVE.
this is not a MMO for what I think of when saying the words, but a terrible boring singleplayer RPG, where other players is more of an annoyence than an asset, in the pursuit for updates - and mind that is even if people were in general good to group up, and updates for most parts respawning fast.
*thumb down* I ll be buying EQ2s next expansion while waiting for GW2- if you like WoW and just want a new setting, I d believe you would like it, even tho they dont have the new things like phasing, people have compared it alot to WAR, havent played that one at all so couldnt compare.
I disliked WoW immensely but really enjoyed the first two betas of Rift. You don't have to group in Rift but I found myself grouping a lot to fight Rifts and for the one instance that was in each beta. There was a nice xp bonus for grouping that encouraged it also. There are enough differences from Wow that people besides Wow lovers will like it. It is a themepark MMO with a twist though so if you're looking for a sandbox, this is not it. It also is not a harsh MMO like FFXI or EQ1 but you will die a lot. The random Rift invaders will put a smackin on your arse if you're not paying attention.
All in all, I like the game and will be buying it. I like the high fantasy setting and the soul system twist. PVP is not that important to me, so if that sucks it won't be that big of a deal. There are some issues with the game, none game breaking, but Trion seems to be fixing things really fast. There were two - three patches delivered each beta weekend based on player feed back.
거북이는 목을 내밀 때 안 움직입니다
I am hoping that they keep the current difficulty levelf of RIFTS. I got my ass kicked even in groups and i love it. The best part was when fire and life rifts emerged over eachother. While invaders from both rifts were attacking eachother i picked them off one by one.

Ok now that we have hard confirm that the NDA was lifted on the rift forums i feel OK to post.
Lets get ready to rumble !!!
(1) I liked defiant more than I did guardian. Defiant quests seam to flow better for some reason, Guardian quests just seamed meh.
(2) Combat Well I only got a handful of skills to use on my hot bar mostly 3 main attacks then when I got other souls the three that came with them. So I had room on my bar for all my attacks and healing pots
(3) Combat seamed fun to me, leveling was easier as a defiant not as easy as a guardian, have not quite figured out why, possible because of the quests. I actually like combat in this game
(4) Graphics, well being a hard core eq2 person I was disappointed with graphics, I was expecting more. the graphics kind of reminded me of wow, yes I got to say I was expecting more as far as character creation, and as far as how toons would look geared up and what not. So graphics is a big one, this is where I feel the game could do much better. I was only getting about 20-25 framers per second and that was after the fix. Lag was non existent due to the frame rate problems so you could not tell
(4) Overall game play and the way the first 2 weeks felt, really is not enough for me to make a good review off of. I need more time for the game. Right now would it replace me eq2 that answer is no! However it will replace other backup games that I do have, those include lotro, Fallen earth and DCUO.
So far I give this a 7/10. So would I pay 15 bucks a month, I'm not sure ATM. The reason being is it looked wow like with tads of warmhammer, eq2, and aoc mixed together.
Like I said only 2 week ends of testing is really not enough to give a good review but that's how I felt so far.
I actually enjoyed my time playing thru BETA 2. I felt the game flowed very well, I didn't stand around scratching my head about where to go next... The quests are a nice blend of kill x or collect y but also a fair imput of environment interaction quests, for example I had to enter a garden maze litered with evil faeries to release caged foresters, once I was in there I noticed a poor fello trapped, and had to escort this npc thru the maze. So although there is the kill x, there is that spice to spruce things up to make things a bit more interesting, the Rifts were also interesting, despite cleric's getting a smack in the jaw with rewards (as heals didnt add to the reward meter) I really enjoyed slaughtering invaders with my ranger and the issue has been addressed to the team as well and I have confidence it will be fixed... almost bug free...flowed nicely...monsters are your average fantasy kinda mobs...but I like the invading system.
Guess the NDA has been lifted.
