Why would anyone be scared of a game that is just a generic copy of what we have seen for the last 6 years?

If you like it. have fun and play it and stop being so obsessed with other people not liking it.

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

But the truth is, all of them are living the same fear as you do. Would you dance ballet? Probably not, yet I'm sure it's a pretty damn athletic sport actually! But who cares, I don't want to learn ballet either.

Now, why can't people chose for themselves what is fun and what isin't? This is exactly why everyone has to try the game, and why they are making the beta so easy to reach for everybody.

Finaly, people who WRITE about why they will NOT buy the game, have you thought about why they're doing it? Right. They say: "I will not play THIS game, but I will play THAT game.". They think that by discarding a game, they can hype their favorite game even more! Therefore maybe everyone will hype and follow them to play their game. This is very 8 years old and yet it still works.

Think for yourself if you want to try or not a game just throw in the 15$ and enjoy it.

    Thank you!

    Actually it is the opposite.

Generally people do not listen to the bad player reviews and buy the game regardless, that's why developers do not make big efforts.

That's what happened with all the latest MMO flops, WAR, AoC, Aion, CO, STO, and now DC Online.

Those game sold well the first months because people wanted to try them regardless of the bad reviews.

People will buy Rift, don't worry.

The question is for how long will they keep the subscriptions?

Will it do better than the above mentioned MMOs?

    I doubt it.

That's why personally I criticise the game, it hasn't got the longevity factor and if I have to spend $50 bucks plus subscription to play a couple of months, I rater buy a good Console game instead.

But time will tell, everyone is free to do whatever they want with their money.

I recently had the epitome that i don't like current mmorpgs, which is why i only like guild wars 1 and by extension my only interest for 2012 is gw2.

However, i will say this: For those who've not become jaded at the standard MMO gameplay, rift will be very interesting for you and worth at least a month. I knew from playing it that i'd find it fun 2 years ago, but as it stands it not much different from the standard MMO layout. Not that it's bad to not innovate too much from the norm, as WoW continues to make more money annually than most african countries, But it won't drag you away from most other MMO's unless you're bored of your current MMO.

     Fixed that for ya.

You can work your way down a list of WAR's attributes, and Rift has all the same ones, implemented in nearly the exact same way. In a broader sense, it makes me angry that developers are getting away with it, and the people who are so ignorant as to be duped by such a project are the ones to blame. First we had Perpetuum, and now Rift. Stop playing this recycled shit, and maybe a developer will have a reason to make a new game.

Can you point out a few art assets taken from war? I don't recall seeing anything like that.

Eh, I cannot find it in a quick Google search, but there was a post that had screen caps of a few particular mobs that were identical to ones from WAR. I don't mean similar, I mean they were the SAME mobs. Some kind of death knight type mob was the one that really stuck in my head. I am not here to nitpick, if you don't see WAR when you play Rift, then you have either never played WAR, or need your eyes checked.

I have played war and I still don't see it. I have a level 40 character. Don't need my eyes checked.

I'll just keep an eye out for them though though if you are going to make a bold statement like that I think it's only reasonable to assume that someone is going to ask for "where".

So you come up with an answer to a question that you only you were asking. And then using words like 'OFFICIAL' and 'truth' to emphasize the answer. Its clear to me that you are in fear and need to be convinced.

Dont worry, we wont hold it against you if you decide to play Rift :p

First of all, your post here comes across as very arrogant.  Feigning to know what is good for anyone other than yourself is pretty grandiose thinking.  Not sure you realized that, so I'm letting you know.

    Number one:

I don't think you're a psychologist nor any other type of professional that would cause me to place any weight on your assessment of "whys."  For anything.  At all.

    Number two:

Perhaps people write about their negative views of a game because someone started a thread discussing it and they wanted to share their experiences and thoughts like everyone else?  Ya think?  Just because YOU obviously have nefarious motives in advertising your favorite game doesn't mean that everyone reviewing the game does. You're projecting your own issues on to others (see....I can play pretend shrink too).

    Number three:

MOST adults don't need to be told to try things. They try things that interest them. Or put another way: I'll spend my 15 bucks a month and game price WHERE I want to and WHEN I want to, thank you very much.

There are already too many threads pro and con about Rift.  Is there a need to rehash all that in another one, or did you just start this thread to chastise the people that don't agree with you?  That is not a rhetorical question, by the way.  I would really like to know.

The real problem is that after few months those games lost 70% if not more of their initial player base and that's because they all lacked longevity.

Most of the people who criticised those games looks more at the longevity of a MMO.

And generally who criticised the above mentioned MMOs they've been vindicated,  while everybody else who was saying that those games were fun, moved on to hype another game which rthey will play for another couple of months

People will buy Rift, don't worry.

The question is for how long will they keep the subscriptions?

Will it do better than the above mentioned MMs?

    I doubt it.

But time will tell, everyone is free to do whatever they want with their money.

Kind of a broad brush you're painting there.  Almost all of those games have an established IP.  Most had serious bugs and lack of content.  This was a major contributing factor to the games failing.

WAR released not ready.  Forced to come out by EA.  It's PvE was crap and PvP was good to okay at points.  PQs became abandoned carnival rides because they didn't do anything outside of the event area.

AoC just flat out lied on what they had in the game.  Fooled everyone with a great single player game at starting levels and had about nothing else at launch.  Seiges anyone?  Is that even in the game now?  What about the drunkin' fighting aspect?

Aion failed in the west due to the time sinks that Korean MMOs generally have because people pay by the hour there.  That game's problem came from the e-peen community over medals and the grind you HAD to do to get high end gear.  I have no problem with grind, but Aion's was substantial - even by the hardcore grinding mentality.

CO was just a crap game in my opinion.  Just really sucked for me.  I suppose others might of liked it, not for me.  Should of known when they lost the Marvel IP, that troubled waters were ahead.

STO was basically CO in space.  Some I'm sure enjoyed it, but I don't love Star Trek enough to look past all the flaws in that game.

For DCUO the game JUST came out, so saying it failed is a little premature.  I didn't like the game from Beta, so I'm not playing; but who knows how many actually like that game.

Guessing you like the game and that's fine for you. But lest be honest here this game is sooooo flipping easy, I bet 9 out of 10 people will leave within 3 months apart from the wow players because it's just up their street. There is no death penalty and the only mobs which are difficult are the raid mobs which wonder about in beta near the end when they thow in a few events.

Let me give you an example, beta1 ran for 3 days and I took three characters to lvl 20 and also did crafting on one of each and maxed that too. Okay they made it easy for Beta but ffs I've had hader dumps...

This game will never see my cash sorry, I've been playing MMO's since UO and this is by far the easiest I've ever tested, even Stevie Wonder could play this game.

I actually think this post is a joke.  The art style is closer to EQ.  Because it's a fantasy MMORPG about war, it must be like WAR.  Or maybe it's because the art style is similar to High Fantasy Games.  Which all come from Dungeons and Dragons, which comes from Tolkein.  BTW- Warhammer is inspired from Dungeon and Dragons.  Look into Games Workshop history and read up on how they did some work for TSR's product line, then transitioned into Warhammer.

WoW is the one who ripped off War.  They just went with a more cartoony version of it.

Good advice in general but I'm not so sure I get the connection to Rift.  I think of it as a pretty obscure game and have little interest in it myself but I still don't see where people are "afraid" to try it.

but yeah, to call this game Fantastic is like calling Twilight the Godfather of vampire movies....

Not a DCUO player just don't see how you can make that stretch of what the game is going to sum up as in such a short time.

People are afraid because Rift does almost nothing new yet is a fucking good game and is recieving quite a bit of praise ATM. If a game like Rift catches on it could mean 10 more years of the same old EQ/Wow formula.

LOL! fail.  You have no interest in the game, yet keep posting in a forum about Rift.  And then go on with you green equals I am right font and takes a strong stance with all caps at the end.  Yep you have no interest.  That's how people who don't even care about a game respond.  Oh wait, they wouldn't because they have no interest so they wouldn't be here in the first place.  :)

I really have to clap my hands at someone who really noticed the imposture of half the people who post in this thread ;)

Look at my old posts in short you will find out that I said:

    - WAR was boring and repetitive and the PvP/RvR meaningless

    - AoC was broken and released too early (still had potential)

    - Aion a Korean grinder (I called it Lineage 2 reloaded)

    - CO, STO, and DCU fall in the same category. They are not real MMORPG but Multiplayer games with extended Massively function

    - Rift is Warhammer reloaded, not so much in design (although it has lot in common) but in the fact that it feels souless and boring

The point is almost everyone was raving about them before release, while people like me who played most of those beta extensively said exactly what the problems with those game were well in advance.

Which is the point of this thread.

People won't listen to others, they will try anyway, this thread is redundant.

Hmm... yeah totally a lack of choices. By the way, I am being sarcastic. Here's my prediction, a large portion of Rift's population after lauch will leave due to boredom at the dreaded 3 month mark, and another large chunk around 5-6 months.

Not a DCUO player just don't see how you can make that stretch of what the game is going to sum up as in such a short time.

Because I played it and I am good at predicting, read my post above.

Had a horrible dream a long time ago that i dropped an apple from my mums kitched fruit bowl on the floor, well there was a banana in the bowl and it got real pissed of at me hurting the apple. IT jumped up, had these small little arms on its side and eyes, but what scared me the most was its grin, it had this horrible mouth, looks just so evil. Anyway, it jumped accross the other side of the kitched, grabbed a BIG knife and came after me.....not kidding it tryed to kill me, i ran like hell, but for some reason all the doors were locked to get out side, i was trapped alone inside the house with a killer banana.......eveer since i hate the things. Sometimes when im drunk I get a odd flash back from that dream.

I beleive the fear of Rift has scarred me for life and is influencing my dreams.

Actually my bet is at the 6 month mark. Since everyone and their mother is going to try and get that 9.99 founders monthly fee. 6 months after release is when we could Gage if Rift was a success or not.

But given those answers why would I listen to you?

War was not boring and mmo's are generally repetitive. If I listened to you I wouldn't have played warhammer. But I did and enjoyed it.

AoC had it's issues, don't know if it was broken because I was able to play it just fine. It was creaky though and it does have its bugs. Broken? I just think that's a bit much.

Aion a korean grinder? Please. You've never played a Korean grinder then or I find it hard to believe you have. And besides I really liked Aion, so again, If I were to listen to you and I didn't know much about what a korean grinder actually is, then I would never have played it.

As far as the other games, who cares? I found STO and CO kind of fun for the time I played it. Could I play them long term?  suppose but I generally stick to fantasy games for whatever reason.

So "no" I don't want to listen to others who make claims as if they are gospel truth and who might be keeping me from something I might find fun.

In the end we should be using our own little filters and realize that many people have their own likes, dislikes and "yes" agendas and would like nothing better than to talk us into or against playing a game.

We should be taking the info at hand and using our own common sense, not allowing others to make decisions for us.
