I am beyond tired of constantly hearing the WoW to RIFT comparisons. Why can't WoW heads just let it go? Don't play the game, don't bash the game, just go away.
What you call a "Gimmick" It's actually a system which is very interesting and fun. Yes rifts are fun and people are loving them.
In regard of the soul system I think is too bad you minimize it like that. The beauty of soul system is choices. In fact is very deep and flexible. And you can be as specialized as you want. Or you can be a jack of all trades if you want, but It's your choice. Or even better you can have a specialized build and then another less specialized and swith over when needed. The system is brilliant.
I think you didn't dig enough and came to rushed conclusions because your so mad this game is similar to other games.
I don't have a problem with similarities, but I do take issue the the massive number of shortcuts Trion has taken. I'm a believer in the philosophy that if you can't improve on what exists, don't waste the time, resources, or emotion on what you're doing. Rift's design is the well-worn boxes within boxes concept. You are once again funneled through a chute to get from one stage of the game to the next. No deviation. The rifts are a side distraction, but little more and after you've played through a few of them you begin to see the sameness. After a while, you're saying, "Oh look, another water rift," as you pass by on your way to the next quest hub.
The souls system is pretty much an exploded version of the WoW specialization swapping system, You're not creating a character, you're developing a collection of specs that you can flip through on the fly. Personally, I had trouble figuring out what to do when I switched souls. You become a little good at everything and skilled at nothing.
The races are lackluster and playing them doesn't change that. I usually develop an attachment to the characters I play, even in beta testing. In Rift, as in the latest incarnation of WoW, I found myself playing a "toon" in a world that I found hard to care about.
why do car companies feel the need to make a 2009, a 2010, a 2011, a 2012 all of the same car?
Taking something that works perfectly fine, a tweaking it, improving it, and putting your own spin on it is what this world is about.
As for PVP being PVE related? I have played plenty of pvp/pve games, where world pvp is very limited, putting objectives in the world to encourage world pvp is a great idea
In this most recent beta 5, I played extensively trying to go through as many different aspects as possible. After all those hours, I've realized this: RIFT tries so hard to be WoW and tries to capitalize on its few mistakes. Even things that seem illogically placed, or seem to bear no function, or just seem to not work are undoubtedly there because WoW had it. Consider:
Tangible/irrefutable/undeniable FACTS:
- RIFT's user interface is a twin/siamese brother (/or even a conjoined fetus) of World of Warcrafts UI. Floating numbers, group window, target's target windows, casting bars, health/mana/energy bars, bar colors, character portraits, maps, minimaps, loot boxes, loot icons, mouse over icons, icon placement, text color, text font, font size, etc etc. I've mentioned this to other players and the response is usually "WoW did not invent these things." My rebuttal is please point to a game pre exisiting WoW that has a UI as similar.
- Various mechanics are identical to WoW. Rogues use a 100 point energy system. The regen rate might be exactly identical to that of WoWs, idk. A combo point system is also in place (with those little shiny bubbles building up, looking exactly the same, ho ho!)
- There is global cooldown system (What reasonable argument is there to have this in place, other than WoW has it? What reason is there when there already exists weapon speed and casting speed?)
- There is renown / honor (though named differently, to exercise originality!), and you can buy gear with this form of currency.
- Warfronts, ala battlegrounds with leaderboards.
No critique is well built without compliments. The good:
- The soul system. Many variations of classes. It is actually addicting to try and figure out which class you want to level as because there are so many choices.
- Roles. Disables the need to roll a new class. You'd have to level at most 4 characters (one for each race) to the max level and you could try every class, unless you wanted a BG twink or something.
The main 'gimmick' of this game is as the title suggests: RIFTS. A rift is a random PvE encounter that spawns throughout areas. Therefore, the game's main interest is to cater to PvE folk. You can see this because pretty much all PvP related things involve PvE. In Port Scion, RIFTs will randomly spawn. Devs say that this will draw players to each other. There are also things called wardstones that players can fight over; one faction tries to destroy it, the other tries to save it. It's like, they try to draw players into fighting each other over PvE related crap. That's just my opinion though. The only thing that keeps my interest is if there will be a FFA server at launch. I doubt that will happen though, because WoW does not have such a server.
This sounds great! Very similar to WoW in gameplay and better graphics? Win/WIn.
Thank you for this unbiased review! Pre-ordering now!
To be honest I jsut read the title. I just wish the OP could walk in dev's shoes and maybe wouldn't be so quick to bash people working very hard on a game. If you want to critique the game, fine. But bashing dev's who created a pretty solid game is ignorant.
How come WoW addicts have to go around saying that any game and every game ever created is a WoW clone? I almost feel as if when we state that EQ came first, DAoC came next, followed by every other game, they'd respond with some story of traveling to the future to steal and clone WoW.
Seriously, every single mmo made, graphical anyways, is a clone of MUD's, or Multi-user Dungeons. All MUD's were clones of tabletop games like Warhammer and Dungeons and Dragons, and all tabletop games were clones of original fantasy works by people such as JRR Tolkein, Robert E Howard, etc.
WoW is only number 1 because many of the people who play it had never played an MMO before, and as gamers we tend to stick to our original games for a lot longer than any other. I started graphical MMO's with DAoC and was with the game for 9 years before venturing out to try other games, and I don't think anyone has even come close to meeting my expectations, more often than not, solely based off of pvp. For all those WoW fruits who think that WoW came out with battlegrounds first, you are sadly mistaken. Any DAoC player remembers having to buy the necklace that would get you to the battlegrounds in the game for RvR.
Seriously, stop referring to every game that has ever been or ever will be as a clone of WoW. WoW cloned just as much stuff from other games and still do, as every other game on the market. Don't believe me? Here's a small list just off the top off my head:
(If I state a game such as DAoC or Warhammer Online, and it was in EQ please let me know as I never was able to get into EQ for some reason, and therefore don't have much experience with what was available in the game, please forgive me XD )
Warhammer online introduced the lorebook which tracked deeds and accomplishments in game and awarded prizes for them. Soon after Warhammer was released, blizzard released their achievements. CLONE!
Plenty of games introduced a way to search for groups for quests and dungeons, blizzard CLONED it with the dungeon finder, and made modifications to it.
Warhammer online when released had guilds which would level up with player xp, and allowed them to gain certain perks like increased vault storage, guild recalls, tokens, banners, etc. WoW CLONED it with their version of the guild leveling system.
EQ and DaoC had mounts, long before blizzard came out, so, I guess you'd have to say that wow CLONED it.
You gain xp in WoW and gain levels...hrmm..CLONED!
You get to buy skills for your class in WoW, CLONED!
You go around killing stuff for xp in WoW...CLONED!
You do quests in WoW for xp and rewards...CLONED!
You do dungeons in WoW for xp and gear...CLONED!
It's a pixelated graphical game where multiple people can log on and play with each other and form guilds and groups in WoW..CLONED!
So, the next time you want to spout off at the mouth about how everyone clones WoW, just realize that WoW wouldn't have ever been made without taking and modifying existing properties of the MMO's that were around during that time. So all in all..WoW..is a...CLONE!
- There is global cooldown system (What reasonable argument is there to have this in place, other than WoW has it? What reason is there when there already exists weapon speed and casting speed?)
I didn't see anyone respond to this with the real reason it exists. a global cooldown in games with thousands of client connections to a single server exist as a buffer to counteract the latency that exists between the client and server machines. With thousands of people connected to a single server performance is a huge issue. Even if the speed of the connection between the server and 1 client is fast the server still has to respond to millions of requests. Without a global cooldown system to act as a buffer there would be very noticable lag between an action and it's effect especialy in PvP combat.

Ya I forgot, they cloned the art and graphics from wow. they clone the collision from wow. They cloned rifts. They cloned wow's game engine. They cloned wow's story. They cloned an entire game. Yep, they just took wow's source code and added the name rift to it. Yep thats what they did.

Way to show everyone who these game makers are.
Yes that means I get to roll an Undead Shaman w/ purple hair, hell yea
Has anyone else noticed that people no longer play games as gamers anymore but instead as reviewers. I've been critical of this game because of the bad experiences had in other releases and the marketing of those turds. After playing it for myself from beta 1-5(and yes I mean playing, there have been no real issues I've had to report) I preordered for no other reason than I'm having fun without unfinished content and bug ridden code I'm actually having fun in an MMO.
Personally I think everyone is over-analyzing the game. Rift is setup to be the first solid relase the genre has seen in quite a while. So it's pretty simple do you enjoy playing it or not?

No more ignorant than this. Statements like yours are why developers think they have a pass when it comes to putting out content. There's no point saying, "Oh, we'll understand" because when it comes down to plunking down hard cash (unless someone else pays for it for you), developers have to deliver. Right now, everybody can afford to be a starry-eyed fan if they want to. Unless you were silly enough to pay for a digital download in advance so you could get a beta spot, you haven't spent a nickel on Rift. But when release has come and gone, others have reached level cap and are bored, and the new has rubbed off, people who spout sentiments like yours are off down the road in search of their next "true love".
This has happened over and over so many times since the release of World of Warcraft, that it's almost comical to see so many offer up blind faith in another group of devs (who may actually have worked on the last failed title) and another shiny new pastime offering a "next generation" experience. Get your head out of the clouds and hold these developers' feet to the fire and just maybe we'll eventually wind up with a game that's decent enough that people will support it after the free month is gone.

also, 99% of all the supposed "cloning" is on basic mechanics and movements. There are tons of other games in other genres that do the same thing. I dont see everyone bashing COD because its basic mechanics are the same as BF.

I pre-ordered the collectors edition and a 6 month sub, and im happy about it. Why because its a good solid game that im having FUN in and to say that its all copy pasted from WoW is just stupid. What the pets follow you thats just like WoW, what the game rewards you for doing pvp thats just like WoW. No youre wrong its not from WoW its from the mmo genre. You do realize that what made WoW so popular is that they took the good things about the MMOs before its time and put it in their game? Not only that but took devs and gms from other games to work on theirs? ....
Hey, heres a little job for you. If you were to be the project leader for RIFT, have the same concept but totally original mechanics that *NO ONE* else thought and still have a fun game. I think we'd love to hear your ideas....

You can't honestly blame the Dev teams from various MMORPGs on how this whole genre has developed, 50% of the blame must lie on the shoulders of the players with their expectations and preferences. Why do you think there are next to nothing in terms of titles that are "sandbox" but rather a mammoth load of "theme park" titles?
The genre has shifted and my gosh I have seen it shift. Gone are the days, and I must say this correctly, where the MMORPG genre was new and people didn't know how hard or easy to set a MMORPG at. EQ to a lot of people nowadays may see it as a grind rather than a challenge. People expect too much for too little input from their end.
You already know I'm sure the answer to your question of why the devs of MMORPGS seem to go the safe route. Who are the people at the end of the day who are going to pay for the MMORPG to be made, distributed, marketed, and maintained...even to sniff at some profit?

Gdemami - Informing people about your thoughts and impressions is not a review, it's a blog.
The OP's post is a poorly done clone of many other complaining posts that have come before it with some words moved around to try and seem original. The main gimmick of the post is to try and seem like any of this hasn't been overstated and refuted before....

Never heard of a promo like that stated...I'd be interested to see it especially if it's an official one.
None of the promo's I've ever seen at game shops ever say anything about WoW or it's developers..
But seriously, not every game is for everyone. Many find this game fun while other's dont. There's really no point in arguing over it we'll have to see how it holds up in the future.

I recall Blizzard's customer service head joining Trion like 2 years ago or something.
If that's their ad, that's pretty dis-honest actually.

I like Rift...I did not like Wow...enough said?
The OP's post is a poorly done clone of many other complaining posts that have come before it with some words moved around to try and seem original. The main gimmick of the post is to try and seem like any of this hasn't been overstated and refuted before....
Pictures or it never happened.
