First off, I preordered the game as well. My wife and I played until the mid 20's and we were bored to tears - even in beta - so we cancelled our preorders.
Second off, I basically share your feelings about the game. It isn't a horrible game, neither is it a great game. It's too little content, too little PvP, too little... everything.
The graphics are one area where I'll say I disagree with you slightly; I did like the graphics in the game. Sadly not enough to make me want to play.
My plans are to pass this game up and check these forums (and the official forums) 3 months after the game has been out. It will be interesting to see how the numbers go down after people run through all the content; which judging by what I've seen won't take very long... unless your idea of fun is doing "random, dynamic Rift" content with random groups all day long, over and over, with the occasional warfront to break the monotony.
In the meantime I will wait for GW2 and SW:TOR, play around in WoW, and occasionally look at gems like Fallen Earth to see if they ever get a player base large enough to support the world.
Did the pre-order on Gamestop.com on the first day Trion announced that pre-orders are available. So I got the Collectors Editon and I will be playing for 6+ months. I really like what I see in Rift and I REALLY like Trion Worlds. So far they have been an awesome company, listening to the players suggestions and feedback on different issues. And they are quick to respond.
Games playing: Lotro,Fallen Earth,Star Trek Online. Games playing casually: CoX,Guild Wars,FFXIV,Champions Online,DDO. Games Played: WoW,DR,L2,RoM,FFXI,Earthrise,EQ2,DAoC,WAR,Rift,Alganon,EVE,G&H Rome Rising. Waiting for: Guild Wars 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic. PC Specs: Intel i7 990x 3.5ghz, 6gb ddr3 Ram,EVGA GTX 570 SC FTW,EVGA x58 Classified 4-way SLI MB, 2TB HDD 7200rpm, 60GB Intel SSD: OS Drive, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, Westinghouse 21 in. 1680x1050.
Im keeping, the game world is great and beautiful... Thats the main reason. I do like how well it's been made too, even tho it lacks innovation it is a nice and solid game. Oh and did i mentioned it has DWARFS!
the best way to kill a troll is to FLAME ON! ...or with acid...
Keep. Got the CE edition pre-ordered via Gamestop. Skipped a beta or two. To keep the game experience fresh. Just more or less used beta to test how my system will run it (even though that's pointless now that I'm getting a new system soon). Rift ran well on my system, even though it's not top of the line. (I7-860, 8gb of ram, Geforce 275GTX 896mb version - High Setting ran at stable 45~50 fps. 24~36 during major rift events). Also gave me a good chance to try Soul combo's to settle in on a path, though I admit at this point still not 100% sure what I want to start as. Overall I'm happy with the game. I'm not one of those people that wants every game to reinvent the wheel. I just want my games to be polished and fun. Rift meets both standards.
In War - Victory. In Peace - Vigilance. In Death - Sacrifice.
Cancelling. Sure it has decent graphics and all, but it really doesn't bring anything profoundly new. It was fun in beta for the first day or so, but then it just felt like every other MMO. Dissapointing
Anyway, after this wall of text you can point out that I am not a developer, nor am I an investor. So what do I know? I'll tell you what I know, every title loses players consistently. WoW is arguably the only title (outside of some Asian titles like Perfect World), that has its ups and downs in population. In other words, mmorpgs have been failing one after the other, and yet, they all make the same mistakes. Terrible pvp concepts, limited class race connectivism, silly or meaningless lore, forgetting the importance of class archetypes, etc. So why not do something different for once, or go back to what we know works. Dark Age of Camelot is my personal example, and those who played it in its glory days will attest that (a) Warhammer is crap (b) Dark Age had the best pvp class culture race combination ever.
Oh well, I wish Rift good luck.
QFT.
I really hope that someday, some developper makes a DAOC 2. No need to do anything except make a true copy suited for todays PC's and vista 7+ and voila, success.
Currently playing browser games. Waiting for Albion Online, Citadel of Sorcery and Camelot Unchained. Played: almost all MMO pre 2007
I, sadly, ordered the Digital CE from trion so i can not cancel my preorder, Dam you jazmine from gamebreaker.tv. If i could I would.
Why, first off the game isnt that bad, but its also not that great. When I see a person, jazmine, get so excited for a game that is to me is so average, then it makes me wonder.
right off the bat the graphics arent that great to me, dont have the best vid card, but i activly play wow, eq2, lotro, allods, and the graphics in those games are much bettter at max settings then max settings in rift.
questing, rifts, invasions, are ok, get real bored about mid 25's, last beta i had all four callings in the mid to high 20's, dont pvp, have pvp with a passion.
Though, still the one thing that still keeps me interested in the game is the amount of the npc models and how well i think they did them. and the enviroment is really well done also. Should at least keep me interested until my free month runs out. I of course dont plan to resub,
so tell me what your plans are, be specific, not dudz, the game is phatz, no trolz ples,
Bro,don't pay for this boring clone.
I pre ordered the game from Trion, played the beta till lvl 20,and got bored to tears.
Just send an email to support asking them to cancel your pre order
24 hours later i received this email:
Dear xxx xxx,
On January 26, 2011, we refunded the amount of 49.99 to your account for the following reason:
I like the game and will keep my preordered CE. It is not ideal in many apsects but looking at the work the devs are putting into it, and how polished the game is still in beta I think it is definitely worth a try
Still better crafting, housing/guildhalls, more variety of armour or clothing etc.. would be welcome.. but I will wait a bit and give them a chance.
Keeping....I personally had surprisingly large amounts of fun thus far....does it have true staying power...I can't really say...but a few friends and I are all going to be leveling together and whatnot after playing in the betas, we are all having a great time.
I'm keeping my Collectors Edition preorder and my 6 month subscription. Since I've enjoyed my experience so far in beta, love how the game looks, can't wait to experiment at max level with the soul system, and have been continually impressed by Trion as a whole I see no reason to cancel my preorder...
This is the first game in 5 years that I really felt had a strong community, that was also listened to. I would play the game just for that.
I knew I would like the game but was not sure that all the pieces fit.
They do. They fit better than I could have originally hoped.
I like the crafting since it is very strait forward and not a ball buster like EQ2 or Vanguard was.
I like the graphics. They are detailed enuff to make me believe in the world and what is happening to an extent which is important to me. Yet they are easy enuff on gaming computers to allow huge amounts of stuff to happen on the screen at once.
I like the level of challenge the game presents. There are combos of souls that are very easy and solo friendly and then there are more difficult soul combos that really make you think and test your skill. I really like how the level of difficulty and plot seems to ratchet up a bit after you get past level 16. The pace is very solid, starting you learning things in what amounts to a tutorial and then letting the training wheels fall away thrusting you into more and more challenge and discovery.
I have now played 5 characters and have had different experiances in game with each due to the rifts and rare creatures and trying out different crafting lines and learning and using different skills. The game feels a bit Diablo with the way random events happen making the game feel different similar to how diablo had random maps with different creatures.
The game also has a bit of an Everquest feel to it in a good way. After playing thru a few times I really got used to the pace and locations and techniques and pushed the boundaries with the next character a little further. I really think we will run into "classic" locations in this game whether they are dungeons or areas that I am going to want to play thru many times similar to Everquest locations.
I will be plopping down my money for the game in another week. I just need to decide if I want the Collectors Edition or the regular. The regular seems like a good way to go since I would get a few in game things and the headstart and be able to pay for a chunk of the first 6 month payment since that is very affordable for an MMO.
I've been playing since beta 1 and can't get enough of it. Right now only thing bothering me ingame is the amount of wowers whining about the game. Luckily it's noicy but small group that can be ignored.
right off the bat the graphics arent that great to me, dont have the best vid card, but i activly play wow, eq2, lotro, allods, and the graphics in those games are much bettter at max settings then max settings in rift.
i truly love allods graphics even more than WoW's but i dont compare them to RIFT's graphics because they are simply too different to say one is better than the other, they just arent on the same rank to be compared in terms of graphics........ Rift graphics reminds me of 3D movies like avatar and Beowolf, the others u mentioned are more cartoonish... i like both
Keeping the Collector Editions for both my wife & I, and getting at least a dozen friends into the open beta next week to try and get as many of them into the game as possible! Very much looking forward to more fun in the very near future.
Keeping. I like the game and its NOT WoW lol. It's a new land to explore with cool Rift/Invasions to spruce it up plus an interesting soul system to keep me meta gaming. That's all I ask for as a basis for an MMO at launch. Also, can't wait to see how it grows over time.
I'm sick and tired of running around killing stuff so I can raise my level to go running around killing stuff in another area.
... then why are you here? lol
You basically descirbed about every mmo except maybe Eve.
he got tired of being on the mmorpg road, got lost and ended up on the mmorpg.com neighborhood lol
Rod Sterling voice over:
You have just reached the end of your journey, next stop MMORPG.com (cue Twilight Zone music)
It has much in common with the Hotel Californa... You can check out any time you like, but you can never leave... ^^
But seriously, Rift has been a good game so far. But expecting it to be the Holy Grail, that which we all eternally seek, is asking more than a bit much. ^^

Yeah, I know... I'm having a gaming crisis, I don't know what I want anymore... and that's not a joke.
I've been playing Civ IV for the last 3 months because I can't start playing anything else...
Rant over, continue threading.
