I love how they totaly side stepped the issue. All I saw was 15k per server was false, Not actually giving the number that a server could hold and seing the post of the que problems.
More par for the course with no real numbers given.
If they want to shut folks up on the number issue then they should post we got x number of this and this and back it up, instead of pulling random numbers out of a hat.
Because Zorndorf......I mean pragues use the old 1500 per server to make up that preorders number you saw in the earlier post. I just meant to say that the actual preorders number is definitely high than his "estimation", since the as they've said the server cap have been raised higher from 1500 with each betas, also applies to release. And they've doubled the number of initial HS servers.
Rift has around the same number of players as SWG / Champions Online and Warhammer right now.
About 100k, note the huge drop after the free trial was over.
40 servers times 2k players = +/- 100k players.
Honestly all this proves is that less Xfire users are playing rift, and honestly who gives a shit, Xfire is far past its prime (if it ever had one). Basing something off of 126 people is pointless.
Also, there are almost 70 servers right now, and the game has yet to launch.
GW2... Honestly people are hyping this game so much when almost no information is provided, it's fucking retarded people like you guys who buy these games due to hype and then complain when they suck. The exact same thing happened with WAR's promotional video, they showed a ton of ideas, a little bit of game play and some British accents and people went freaking nuts. Wait until we get more information before you start hyping, don't be stupid (again).
They had a pretty comprehensive demo that had half the classes and 2/5th of the races... and that had hundreds and hundreds of people play it (Up to 200 at a time, even...), going in lots of different directions and doing various different things in two big zones and one city. It showed quite a bit of what they've talked about, from the dynamic events to the combat system to the personal story. They're coming out with another demo in the next couple weeks... just how much, exactly, do they have to reveal before people are allowed to be hyped? Does the game actually have to be released?
I'm not sure what 'almost no information' entails exactly. Where is the line drawn?

That's not even the point, trying to assert something based on the fact that it's not in the top 10 on some shitty site that almost no one uses anymore is completely stupid. This is the first time in a while since I've seen someone retarded enough to use Xfire to try and prove something.

Actually, you may have a good point.
As soon as Trion announces figures or the sales figures are up for grabs, it'll become clear how screwed up Xfire is for comparing game player numbers from different games with eachother.
In fact, it becomes pretty obvious already: Rift with 50+ servers in its launch week shows half the Xfire player numbers that a 3 yr old game as AoC with 10-20 servers has.

Once again that tracker is for beta not for the game client which Xfire won't track till release date.

Eh, but their closed beta is supposed to be REAL exclusive, so it won't really change much about how much the average player will know about the game.
I can say exactly why I'm hyped about GW2, and all the reasons seem perfectly reasonable to me.
I like Arenanet. Sure, they might let me down this time, but they haven't yet. Innocent until proven guilty!
The game will be B2P. This is my favorite pricing model. Hey! Can't I be excited and giddy about such petty things as pricing structure?
I like the artists and the music. At least I know this isn't going to change, so it's a reasonable thing to like.
The developers ask the same kind of questions I ask my friends when we're talking about MMOs. Not all their answers are the same, but they ask the same questions. That sort of makes me happy inside! Sure, it might not be the questions everybody else is asking, but maybe the game isn't for the people who dont' have the same questions.
Questions like 'What's up with the huge reliance on healers', 'Isn't classic holy trinity a weird way to do things?', 'Wouldn't it be nice to have PvP where skill matters more than gear/level grind?', 'why does quest text lie a lot' and 'What exactly is the point to a death penalty?'
It's always nice to know a company is basically philosophically in tune with your own beliefs.
I'm not sure why I'm talking about GW2 in a Rift thread. I guess because this thread brought up how if somebody is disappointed in Rift they're not allowed to be excited about GW2, when... at least through what I've seen presented... they're pretty different games.
The point is the games are completely different ebcause the quests are different
Quests in Rift are all KILL X, COLLECT X. And I have played up to level 35 in the beta 6. How is this different from WoW? Shrug.
I usually don't respond to people's postings unless they are responding to mine, however this is just frustrating. I have been playing the game for two days now, and frankly, I like it. But it is not the same game as WoW. It is not WoW 2 or whatever you are trying to say. Yes, it is the same style and approach but to say it is the same game is silly.
It isn't an orignal style of a game but there are tons of new ideas. The game, in itself, is a new story within a genre of MMO's. I don't understand why people say it is the same thing, when clearly, its a completly different game in itself. Sure, there are similarities, but I don't play thinking I'm playing WoW. I liked WoW for what is was, years ago, but now there is are more updated games out there to play, like this. I left WoW because I finished the content, finished raiding, and was tired of many aspects. I am playing RIFT becuase it is new and exciting. They are not the same, or I most likely would go back to WoW, which I am not going to. Sighh..
This thread is kind of all over, but after cleaning it up some, leaving it open for now. The discussion going on is fine; just remember to keep it civil.

Oddly enough, I've had friends who went back to WoW after playing RIFT... and also friends who are now playing both (Nobody I personally know quit WoW to go to RIFT, but I'm sure people like that exist too! )
I think it really depends upon the person.
Some people think they're much alike, some people think they're different enough. None of my friends, so far as I am aware, are being paid by Blizzard to state their opinions, so I'm going to just assume that this is a case where some people feel one way, and some people feel another way, and it's silly for either side to say what the other side REALLY feels.
More people need to realize that just because one person has an opinion, does not mean that other people with an opposing opinion are automatically lying. They might just disagree about something.

My favorite analogy to use is that its like buying a new carr (same model) or new pair of shoes. The old model/pair are nice and comfortable. You know how they feel, what to expect, and what they are like. The news one are the same way except they are new and shiny. You expect some minor upgrades but for the most part, its version 2.0 of your old pair/model.
After all, you would not like if your favorite pair/model were completely different.
What you are comparing are somewhat necessities...
Yes, entertainment is neccesary, but i like mine to be a bit more different on occasion.
Rift is not different enough for me to enjoy it, its version 2.0 (as you say), and too similiar to something i have already been doing/have done.
Personal opinion, but it all seems very repetative.....

I agree with that analogy. I haven't played WoW in like 3 years, but playing Rift has that familiar feeling.
I liked WoW but after getting 3 toons to max level (this was before Lich King), it just got old to me.
The thing is I think RIFT is as likly as good as it will get for many years to come . If you don't like it and are bored with the other mmos on the market then perhaps its time to look a little further than dwarves , elves ,orcs and goblins and either try a different genre MMO(maybe scifi) or give up MMOs for the next 5-10 years .
If your unhappy with this its extremly unlikly you will enjoy anything to be released in the next half a decade or so .
there is some kind of contradiction with this lines and your title.... "if you dont like it are bored of other mmos on the market" perhaps its time to look for a different genre of MMO.... that doesnt mean you have to love Rift.... Rift is just one game in the genre.... plus what makes you think all upcoming games will be like Rift? because its similar to WoW, warhammer, and so on? i dont think all upcoming games will be like this (some will, some wont)
When WoW launched it was largely ignored by core MMORPG gamers because it was such a limited game,
And by the way, themeparks are NOT WoW clones. EverQuest was a themepark
Disagree with both statements.
Large numbers of MMORPG gamers went to WoW when it launched, as figures of that time show.
You're being silly. There's a much simpler explanation for the sales figures. While lots of people who had never played MMOs before all went to play WoW, all the people who were currently playing MMOs just stopped and started posting how much they missed the games they just left, on forums.
Somehow, all these companies got the wrong idea watching the change in populations, and thought people were leaving older MMOs for WoW. The whole MMO market has been one hilarious misunderstanding after another that totally fail to reflect the realities of what people actually want.
The only people who play WoW are people who dont' even play MMOs. A good sandbox MMO could get millions and millions of users, but they wouldnt' be the people from WoW, they'd be all the people posting on forums waiting for their game to come along.
Do you think a market research just involves looking at two graphs? To get a good grasp of how a market functions you need to keep up with trends over an extended period of time. It's not a one-off thing.
Do you know why MMOs were a very small niche in the gaming market? Because they were too hardcore and ridiculously time consuming. I am pretty sure if you have a normal life with a 8+ hours per day job you will not have enough time to play a game like EQ. WoW showed us one thing. MMOs can be more than just a niche for a selected few. Make a game available to people who want to spend some of their spare time in an MMO, and you have a much more profitable MMO game. That's what WoW gave to its customers. A game which they can enjoy at their leisure. Oldschool MMOs were a placed where MMO players wanted to live in. A place where they can devote 8+ hours of their day or live in that alternate world etc. That was the reason MMO players were perceived as a basement dwelling folks ^_^
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.

Well for entertainment is still applies. I mean I like it when I start reading one author, he writes the same type of books. For example, if I read Terry Brook's I know what his books we will like. I like it when I buy a CD or download music from one artist that it would be like their earlier music.
It would drive me crazy that everytime I find something I liked or didn't like, it was always different. If all of the sudden U2 did heavy metal and Enya was a rap artist. or if Terry Brooks start writing trashy romances or spy novels.
I guess I am in the minority because I like Rift for being like WOW. It was very approachable to me. And honestly, if I wanted something completely different, there are lots of games out there to play.
I read, and have read more than just Terry Brooks... If i was bound for life just reading Terry Brooks, I think my example would also still apply. That also pertains to listening to U2 everyday for the next some odd years.. I like U2 a lot, but some Pearl Jam, Ozzy, and maybe a bit of Brian Setzer would be a nice change after awhile
The mmo industry is like any other form of entertainment. It needs to truly evolve or it will die. The level of "evolution" we have seen over the past several years in the genre is simply inadeqaute.
Rift is a game that probably would have been better off had it been released a few years back (I'm not saying it won't do well in today's market). There's nothing wrong with well polished mmos that follow the familiar formula, there is obviously still demand for them (for now). However, things have been stagnating for far too long, and we need some studio out there to realize just how ripe the field is with opportunity. I really don't want to watch this genre disintegrate into a small niche, which will inevitably occur if we continue down the road we're on.
This genre, more than any other in the video gaming industry, has the potential to become so much more than what it is now.

You realize there are 50's already? So complaining about questing is sort of null in void
considering the devs said they could care less how fast you level.
Also if you bothered to read the quest they actually have a storyline for each zone. I have
not found just pointless quest really. They have all served a purpose in each zones storyline.

I did not enjoy Rift but do currently enjoy EQ1 and Aion.
Not liking Rift has nothing to do with not liking the entire industry, Rift just wasn't fun for me.
Rift seems familiar yet new.
there is some kind of contradiction with this lines and your title....
Need some variety

Nicely put, well said, whatevers.
