Very understandable decision. I hope Japan recovers soon. Strength to all those who are affected.
My brand new bloggity blog.
Sometimes mother nature remind us how little we are and how our technology cannot protect us from those kind events.
I wish all the best to Japanese players and people.
I suppose some people will find any excuse to take a shot at FFXIV. That was pretty low...
I played the Beta for FFXIV and I didn't really enjoy it all all with all the problems it had, I started playing again yesterday and It was a lot of fun so I'm looking forward to it coming back up, shame that it has to go down the second day I'm playing it but I can see why they did it.
Considering that thousands will have to wait much much longer to recover, one week is just a blink in time. The people of Japan are definately in my family's thoughts and prayers.
Edit: I just /facepalm when people see a thread about FFXIV and can't resist the urge to post, just to take one more stab at the game.
Truly makes me wonder if some exec somewhere was running for his life and had the thought "Maybe it would be very lucky if the Tsunami would take out the server room for FFXIV... we could recoup the loss in insurance and not have to deal with the game any further.... c'mon Tsunami!"
i think toilet humour like that is exactly where it belongs...
i wish them luck.
Square-Enix have absolutely made the right decision to bring the servers offline, however I feel a week is looking a little bit optimistic at the moment. They'll certainly be losing money from suspending the PlayOnline service (ie; FFXI).
Anyway, godspeed to all those affected.
This is in response to Japan asking the people to conserve energy, being Japan,i somehow wonder if they are asking or telling.
So in order to meet the ahem... demands, Square is shutting down servers, probably until their governor or whatever you call the guy in charge deems there is no longer a power shortage/risk.I can only imagine how many millions of Yen are lost by using less power and money ALWAYS talks louder than common sense. This probably won't last any longer than the one week, the only problem i see is that Sqaure has said no cost to the customers for April,so they may very well keep the servers down until May,when they actually will get some money from us.

First off we are talking about a large company here not the Japanese people. As a professional working in the IT and telecom industry this is just a sad excuse to mask their incompetence. Anyone working in the industry knows that if your a big company like SE you should have back up systems and fail safes in place to make sure the service you are providing doesn't go down for prolonged periods. Even though I do see this as evidence that SE really is incompetent I'm not "angry" at SE or leaving the game. They just need to start making better choices. Time to put your big boy pants on SE.
P.S. My best wishes and prayers to the Japanese people.

... unbelievable.
Yes, because being an "IT professional" totally prepares you for how to deal with a 8.9 earthquake - the largest in modern recorded history - multiple aftershocks no lower than 5.9, followed by a tsunami that destroys a huge portion of the region right? Being an IT professional prepares you for the side-effects that impact the entire region, not only the areas directly affected, right?
You do realize we're talking about a major catastrophic event that struck Japan and has effected everyone in the region, not some minor inconvenient flooding due to heavy rainfall, right? You don't have to be an IT Professional to have common sense, and common sense tells me that they're dealing with something far beyond what "having back-up power" would be appropriate for.
They are going to be dealing with the fallout from this for *years* over there. This isn't some minor event that's only going to set that region back a couple weeks.
While it might be difficult for some folks elsewhere in the world to comprehend this: A state of emergency in Japan > People being able to play a fucking video game.

There are parts of the world that do not get hit by natural disasters. Yes there are companies that take such things into consideration. Again. We are talking about a large company. Not the Japanese or Japan. I've got hundreds of games I can go play or books I can read so the fact that their servers are down doesn't really bother me. Just simply pointing out the facts as they are.
My theme song.
I say it again... We're not talking about a minor setback here. We're talking about a major catastrophy over there.
Try watching the news sometime.
You're going on like this is something they prepare for as a matter of routine.
Let me say it again: Largest earthquake in modern recorded history. Millions of homes, businesses and such destroyed. Many, many, many lives lost. The country is clearly taking steps to deal with it in the aftermath. SE may be a big company... but they are still *part of the region that was impacted*.
Again... major catastrophe > people being able to play a game. And I don't even need to be an "IT Professional" to know that.

It's funny seeing people talk about things that they have absolutely no knowledge about. Your assumptions are extremelly comical. Your point of view is flawed.
They have created blackouts to conserve energy. I am not sure they do have much choice. WIth the power plants etc. I can see why. They need the electricity generated by other means for hospitals etc.

They've been frigging devastated over there.

Wow, you made my brain hurt. Seriously, I want to know what exactly would you do if your whole country was in the midst of trying to actually rebuild after a major disaster? I could have sworn the government of Japan said they need to try to conserve power so why would they even want to keep the servers running? Also, I kind of think the employees are more worried about their families instead of trying to keep some servers running (which will only be off for a week! Not months, not years, a week!)
BOOYAKA!
I do watch the news and have been reading up on the current events over there. Who says their back ups and fail safes need to be over there.
My theme song.
Maybe you could tell him how instead of making a post like that. I don't see how yours was better.
Wa min God! Se æx on min heafod is!
Indeed.
Some people in this thread are really showing their true colors... and it's pretty damn pathetic.

There is only one FACT,their government has told the people to cut back on power use because there is a real threat of shortage,so Square is complying. They may very well be demanding less power use,it has nothing whatsoever, not even 1% with Sqaure being incompetent lol.As i am a personal witness, the game servers were running just fine after the earthquake right up until the time ,they announced they would be shutting them down.
There is only one real incompetent thing and that is my constant typing/spelling errors lol,i think i have aged 5 years just fixing typos bleh.
Square is an absolute HUGE game developer,i am sure they use a massive amount of power consumption, probably doing their part before they are actually told to shut down. The only thing i have ever been dissappointed in is Square's inability to give the NA players their own servers, and to listen to the NA player base, they are real homey's in that reguard.

I have had the honour of working among Japanese people for some time, and was..am..still astonished by their culture, their code of conduct, their ethics..so humble,so productive, kind, gentle always with strangers..and as every body with such values, twice as critical and severe in their judgements of their own selves..felt so bad watching/hearing about all this..even more after the meltdown, and the news of a possible second one in the sister plant..horifying..a disaster that will have multiple impacts. Even upon physical recovery,we are talking about a disaster equalling 8% of their national growth,at their estimates. What Square Enix does or does not do in light of such events is far down in the list of importance..so with all that said, shame to the 'comedians' making light of this..i have no words for you..runing around hoping for tsunami huh ("c'mon Tsunami")..imagine your mother being there, with her kid buried alive under cement,or drowned under dirty waters..try visualise it,then consider when we make 'fun',and when we just don't. Regardless of what your originals intentions were-
I guess this is where the real fanboys will get separated from the realists.

Nevermind.
You don't get it. At all.
Pathetic.

Several earthquakes + several Tsunamis + 3 or more possible nuclear meltdowns. In a high populated area.
Sorry if I sound cynical, but one week downtime sounds quite short when looking at all the disasters above.
lol... I seriously hope you don't count yourself as one of the realists. That *would* be a joke.
You have no freaking clue what the real situation over there is. You don't know the circumstances. You don't know the specifics under which SE has made this decision.
You're just sitting there, Mr. smug "IT Professional", making presumptions and arrogant claims about something happening halfway around the world, and arrogantly claiming that somehow "you know better how to deal with the situation than they do".
Get the fuck over yourself.
Then go find some empathy. If you know what that is.
