Is this just a "filler" MMO?

GPrestigeGPrestige Member UncommonPosts: 523

After reading a lot of threads not only on this site, but many other sites, I've noticed a trend. A lot of people seem to be playing this game while waiting for another. So, I've decided to ask the majority here who are playing it, how many of you are playing RIFT, fairly enjoying it, but are actually waiting for a different MMO and will jump ship when it is released?

EDIT :

By filler, I mean a game that you do not see yourself sticking with for a long period of time, like you would an MMO you love. Example - I played FFXI for years on end because I absolutely loved it and it had all the right hooks to entertain me and keep me playing. WoW also did the same, but wasn't as strong of a hook for me. Don't come in here just say "oh all games are fillers because you just play it until something better comes out." That is a dumb response, as it is in no way what I'm referring to.

So regarding this argument about simple semantics: filler, in this thread at least and in the way I wanted to portray it, means an MMO that you don't think has what it takes to keep you hooked.

The following poll is for people who are currently playing Rift.

-Computer specs no one cares about: check.

-MMOs played no one cares about: check.

-Xfire stats no one cares about: check.

-Signature no one cares about: check.

------------------------------------------------------------
-Narcissism: check.

As someone who plays almost every new MMO after playing the beta I saw no reason to bother with Rift, it is the definition of filler MMO, it brings almost nothing new to the genre and is such a heavy handed ripoff of WoW that I had no interest.

I like Rift.  I think it's going to be very successful.  However, I can be reasonable at the same time as being a fan of the game.

I might quit sooner but pretty much just playing to kill time before TOR.

it wasnt really filler for me......i just quit after 2 weeks b/c i got bored really quicky.....

    Playing: PO, EVE
    Waiting for: WoD

Im gonna stay with Rift. I dont rush it like others, i enjoy the sites and wonders i can find. I do like the lore too, its nothing much original but still its something of its own. And for the new content already been made i cant see any reason to quit. Maybe i buy GW2 some day and play it along Rift or not.

Played since Beta5, honestly just not into it anymore. Been playing DA2 for a week haven't been on RIFT until tonite. Not to sure I'll resub next month.  I'm excited for TOR and kinda GW2 so I'll see. It's gonna be a long wait.

The following poll is for people who are currently playing Rift.

People treat MMOs like a single player game now.

They play and when they feel they consumed enough content, they unsub.

Even the sub-number king WoW only retains 30% of players. (only 30% gets above level 10 - Blizz CEO)

Is it right or wrong? Doesn't matter, that's market reality.

I played it in the beta but decided not to sub, at least not until an expansion comes out.

I wouldn't call it a filler, it is a new traditional MMO following EQ and Wow. Well known mechanics with a fex exceptions, comptently coded into a new game. The problem is that many of the people who want games like it still play Wow currently, the people who want something different are waiting for other games.

Nothing about Rift is bad but most of it is more of the same. But I don't think the people who will play Rift for a longer time will like the games who try to do something different.

There are 3 kinds of MMO people: The classic themepark crowd, the sandboxers and the people who want to play something new. Rift is a classic themepark even if it is a lot different in difficulrty and have other timesinks than EQ. I don't think most classic themepark players will enjoy games like GW2, WoDO, TOR or TSW. Well, possibly TOR.

I think most Rift players either will quit after their first month or stay for a few years.

For me, this game is complete time-filler. I'm having fun experimenting with the different soul combos, but the second TOR/GW2 drops, I'm done.

I wish you would put more options. Like "I don't know".

I'm not really all that jazzed about SWOR or GW2. There's nothing out right now that really gets me interested, although I do play STO heavily.

So who knows. At face value Rift seems ok at level 15. But what a lot of people are looking for is a game that they can really sink their teeth into. We haven't seen many of those. Make a list of games that you have played and sunk a few years into. Perhaps you can name three?

WoW and EVE are the only games I've played for *years*. So by comparison everything else is "filler".

    Rift? Who knows.

well said, but you are forgetting the 4th, hybrid MMO player, who takes a little bit from each of the 3 you described.

Most players I know while having loyalty to their MMO are waiting for a better game. This is the modern MMO disease, many treat their MMO like a solo adventure game, one or two months and its shelved. Those that don't always think something better is around the corner, until recently that was Rift, now it is 'the next best thing'.

The days or players starting a MMO and deciding 'thats it, I am here for the duration', have long gone.

Needs an 'I don't play Rift but show me the score' option V_V

I don't see why it's so bad for something to be a filler MMO. If Rift manages to keep me entertained for six months, until the new crop of MMOs arrive, it'll be a major accomplishment. If it manages to keep me despite them it'll be a miracle.

In comparison, EVE kept me entertained for about six months. WoW cataclysm for 20 days.

  • Duster505Duster505 Member Posts: 66

Yes - Currently RIFT is just a filler.  BUT the devs have a chance to impress me in the next 1-2 months.   We can all see that the game engine is strugling just like It did with WAR but PVE content is better (so far) and the rift events are intresting and make the world feel alive.

There are alot of things to improve on and who knows... Maybe Trion pulls it off.  But then they have to realise that their real work is just starting now... the future of the game is determined by fixes - improvments - and new content.

Im not to optimistic at this point - but enjoying jumping between souls to keep me intrested instead of the same boring mecanics for 50+ levels like the rest of the MMOs out atm.

WOW kept me intrested few more days that 20.  But its really getting dated and the devs have just stopped trying.  Rewamped dungeons is everything that is infront of WOW and ohh God ppl.. dont even bother with such junk.  THen its better to go into new world and enjoy new story abit.

I like it so far - even tho the story is not complicated or special.  I still read all the quests and try to get immersive cause thats what I need right now after "more of the same" from WOW.

  • I can't wait for GW2 and SWTOR to finally release so we can stop seeing these rediculous posts about a 'filler mmo'. Of course, after that happen there will be another 'next big mmo' from 'huge Company' thats supposed to be awesome. No, Rift is not just filer for me I plan to stick with it as long as it has a healthy population. Oh and I hope SWTOR and GW2 are crap because of all the hype around them. I know the "space combat" is pretty much crap from I've seen LOL.

Hard to say. Not filler for sure but not sure if it is something that will hold my interest longer term (3+ months). I am in my 40s on a couple of toons and its solid, few issues and has a pretty decent graphics system but after a while its kind of same old same old.

I am watching several games though not holding my breath for any of them. *shrug* Time will tell.

While I enjoyed my time in Rift, the one thing I am most thankful for is it became the last theme park MMO for me.  Not because it was bad.  It was just the same thing I have been playing for the last 7 years.

Im not sure what prompted me to do it, but I got into the Darkfall 14-day trial and subbed.  After avoiding this game like the plague, I am actually having a great time.  Really my first sandbox since pre-NGE SWG, but I am glad I made the move.

Here's hoping Rift and it's community enjoy a long and prosperous run.

My plan was to play rift for a while until GW2 comes out.. but I'm having so much fun that I'm not sure I'll be stopping honestly.

The game im ultimatly waiting for is Archeage ATM but it wont be out for 2 years probably.

Haha . Exactly. All games are only good until something you like better comes along.

Had I actually decided to play Rift, it would be the epitome of a filler MMO for me. (if I win the Rift contest on this site I'll play it)  In fact, it was that precise opinion of mine that ultimately made up my mind to not purchase Rift in the first place.

I worked hard to get a VIP key, played the betas and had my opinion made up before it entered open beta.  I enjoyed playing the game, it's fun and has some pretty cool ideas but I realized that it would never amount to anything other than a filler MMO.  Sure, in my opinion, it's one of the top 5 best games out right now but it held no lasting power over me.  As tempting as it would be to buy the game and after all the flops and let downs over the last 5(?) years I came to the conclusion that I just wouldn't be missing that much if I saved myself the box fee.

We really need separate forums for every newly launched game. There can be the anti-<MMO> one and there can be the 'what general discussion should be' one. All the lamenting can happen together where each can find solace in like minded can't-move-on-ers leaving the rest of us to actually move forward and discuss meaningful and relevant topics.

Very bad question... but the best topic so far in this Rift forums.

YES is my answer, why? No freakin'game is eternal, not even almighty one you love for X years. Every game fills until a new one comes out. It's logical.

For myself, I'm waiting for TOR or GW2... but I'm REALLY thinking twice about going to TOR, it looks like more of a "star wars fanboism from movies transported to a online game" than anything else, just like DC universe (NOT TALKING ABOUT CLONING, JUST HYPE... have to say this before anyone thinks I'm speaking about cloning and game comparations.)

Anyway, Rift is nice, but it is until something better comes out.

Until then, go rift, go rift! go go go... go rift!

Rift had a lot of hype around it too, fyi.

Keep in mind I'm not saying as much as those two but Rift still had a significantly large amount of hype, easily #3.(if not surpassing TOR at certain time periods and no I'm not talking about this site's hype meter)
