As of today they have released skill tree. It is a clone copy of the WoW skill tree. Where is the inovation that Biowear is known for? The last great hope for AAA titles has failed to create a new gaming experience.
I will give you a chance to go re-read what was stated...It may visually look like WoW, but mechanic wise is nothing like WoW. It is very similar to Age of Conans though...which is a great PvP strategy. I think you need to play more MMO's, I have 15 years plus in the genre.
You're saying that you played Meridian before it was commecially launched?
I think 15 years is perfectly feasible, but I count MUDs.
I'll see you in court!
In 2008 NWNonAOL won a T&E Emmy for advancing the field of MMORPG's, NWNonAOL came out in 1991.
Island of Kesmai came out in 1985. Again, not my point
Then what is your point? You say someone cant have 15 plus years in the genre, yet if you know about IoKonCompuServe then you know they can. The term itself was created by Garriot for UO, which was after Meridian. However games that preceeded UO (like Meridian) helped create this genere and can be considered MMO's.
It's just one of those things I always see where someone wants the upper edge, in this case, the upper edge on experience, as if it somehow pushes opinion more towards being a fact.
Many games have talent trees. It doesn't necessarily mean they're all like WoW. You can speculate, but why abandon ship so easily?
Point taken though you could have said that instead of the Meridian response.
(A) linear character development. As you level you get 1 choice of a skil to train. At level 50 each character has the same skills
(B) option A plus alterative character tweaks like AA points, or trailts
(C) a skill tree system where you level and get a choice train one of several skills
that''s all folks
So I can get one of 3 strings of staph infection, when I know there's cake and ice cream in another room?
Lazy devs....
There's more choices than that.
really ! Please enlighten us then. I am sure there are a lot of lazy Devs that would love to hear your ideas. Describe you perfect dream of a advancement system. Oh and plese don't pul out the old "open advancement system of Ultima and Asherons Call" there is a reason no has even tried that since Wish cnaceled in beta, and that reason is balance
I was really ok with Rift's tree set. In fact, that might have been, for me, they only thing they had going for them.
I have to agree with you. I liked Rift's art style, but it's character creator left something to be desired. Their skill tree though was about the only thing I found good about the game.
Here is a suggestion for the OP though. How about instead of a "Skill Tree" they do a "Skill List" instead. You can pick from a certain set of skills from the beginning of the list at lower levels AND based on what you pick and how many skill points you spend it opens up other skills on the list. How does that sound? Oh wait, they did that on a lot of games back in the 1990's and it eventually evolved into the "Skill Tree". Nevermind we don't want a clone of a Pre-WoW system either do we. . .
"If half of what you tell me is a lie, how can I believe any of it?"

You need to remember what Bioware said they were doing to try and make SWTOR unique... story. No other MMO will have anywhere near the highly developed story that SWTOR will have. That is what Bioware does, that is what makes them famous.

The King don't work for free.
But a lil' charity.. Even a hybrid of A and C, or B and A would be more interesting. Plus you lumped a trait system in with Alternate Advance cues. Why? A stand alone trait pool progression would be more dynamic feeling than having 3 trees to fill up with a point here and there.
OMG OMG OMG ITS A TOTAL WOW CLONE THEREFORE ITS GOING TO SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh wait its not it has almost nothing to do with wow or wow mechanics
First off NO ONE CARES IF IT DOES OR DOESNT use wow trees, they work just as well, Galaxys had them and that game ROCKED!
Why do people ALWAYS compare every game to WOW? I'm sure that ToR will have part of alot of games that have come before it in the game, if it works and is good HELL YES use it, if it didnt DONT.

Again, people are just tired of the clone model.
The game will probably be great for a current gen title an have a nifty story and some quality acting.
Just would like to see someone put that much investment in game mechanics.
Knights of the Old Republic is an outstanding game because it covers every single angle in terms of audience expectations. It's got enough Star Wars to satisfy the fans and enough pure fun to draw in people who normally wouldn't get into role-playing games. You'll see this on several Game of the Year nomination lists if not at the very top soon enough.
The main difference between ToR and WoW is that ToR's trees change skills making them work better, wow's made them hit harder and whatnot. Read the post, the trees let you get rid of charge times to skills, minimum range, so they are more skill mod trees than a skill or talent tree.

I get the whole sick of cloned games, to many are like WoW but Wow was like other games, it mirrored EQ and EQ2 alot, it had elements of UO in it, it was a mash up of a bunch of games.
These days games are all going to have somethings in them that are from games of the past, its just the new generation.
Look it like people having kids, those kids will have stuff from there parents but they are not there parents.
It's going to sell 1.5-2.0 million boxes and retain 300k subs after 6 months and maybe 100k after 12 months, IMHO of course. I had high hopes when it was announced, especially with Bioware in tow. But, for me at least, themepark, storyline based MMOs don't seem to hold my interest for much time anymore. I seem to be longing for the "good ole days" when we made our own stories...
It’s kinda sad that most people don’t realize that the only difference between pretty much all advancement systems out there is only cosmetic. Even EvEs advancement system isn’t that different. The only true difference is that it is classless, obviously because you don’t level by playing but by time, so you have one giant big skill tree with dependencies and enhancing skills and adding skills just like in any other mmo, of course ultimately you are again limited by your ship instead of you class.
As of today they have released skill tree. It is a clone copy of the WoW skill tree. Where is the inovation that Biowear is known for? The last great hope for AAA titles has failed to create a new gaming experience.
Almost every RPG I have ever played has a skill/ability tree/form/page/whateveryouwanttocallit. Now why the heck did you have to go and bring up WoW again when it has nothing to do specifically with it, but rather RPG's in general. Why arent you people innovative with your whining but go on and on about stuff that WoW did not invent?
A new RPG has a common and well accepted RPG mechanic since last 15 years in gaming and it fails because of that single point, and also is a WoW clone for that? Since when did innovative mean you should revamp everything in a game? Or what the heck are you on about? These kids are getting more and more annoying who think WoW was the first game, not only mmorpg but obviously first game to ever existed and nothing should be even remotely similar to it because of that. Lol.
Hope leads to Fan bois, Fan bois leads to mmorpg.com, mmorpg.com leads to EA, EA leads to Bioware, Bioware leads to bad product, bad product leads to SUFFERING !!!

Horrible anology and I hope it's never used again.
These aren't children of prior generations being birthed, these are pimples on old game's asses. "Look it's a lil' different, it's popped up, red, and infected and sometime it's itchy!"

Use of technical advancements?

Anarchy Online had the best advancement system imho. Beats the shit out of all the other games I've played.
My god has horns.... nah, I don't think he is real either.
Good point actually.
And it's funny that a lot of the systems we see now were innovated with Anarchy, but in the simplest of terms possible.
AO was ahead of its time. Played it for a long bit and not sure what distracte... Oh wait, yeah, I recall. Still not any of the game mechanic's fault.
