For those of you asking why CCP what did they do?

Little history one of the first announcements from LOLSEC was they wanted to take down Sony as a company and it's online presence.  CCP recently announced that Dust was going to be a PS3 exclusive.  Thats why CCP was attacked.

The escapist was attacked probably because they have been publishing articles on every one of LOLSECs' hacks and the escapist community hasn't been overly supportive.

By the way these guys are pretty skilled hackers not 4chan script kiddies.  They have broken at least 2 fedral web security companies got data and changed websites.  They arn't exactly white hats but they arn't entirly black hats either.  Generally they have posted who their target is going to be a week before they do the hack and then still get in.  They then post what they did to get in and what they stole so hopefully the companies affected can fix the loophole (the Nintendo and Bethsuda hacks they did this at least).  They apparently have also fended off attempts by other hacker including ANNON to close down their server with ease.

I don't neccacarily agree with what they are doing but to pass them over as just script kiddies with nothing better to do would be a huge mistake.  These people are seriously skilled and should be taken seriously.  Sofar the correct response in my opinion is they are showing us pretty much what the more paranoid amoungst us has been saying for a good long time.  Nothing online is safe so trust no one with your personal information not big companies and not the government because if someone with skills wants it they can and will get it.

Why is it so hard to re-trace back or find out who these people are?  The IP address would visible from which ever LuLSec person that owns the Twitter account and facecbook account - right?   What am I missing here?

    proxys

probably not even that.. most common DDOS is using a 'disposable' botnet to carry it out.. sort of a 'fire and forget' method.. back tracking is increasingly difficult... probably not impossible... all it does is highlight that these people are criminals really.. botnets etc.. are the tools of organised crime after all.. image

Organised crime create the botnets then anybody with a paypal account can buy one, though the buyer could be another organised crime group, but bot net attack could be small little nobody to a big group, you just never know.

I can't agree with your interpretation of these peoples motives or moral standing.  The way I see it these people are criminals and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent when found.  They endanger not only the companies they attack, but the people whose information they steal AND the welfare of the people who invest in these companies.  The investors might be the worst part of it since for the most part it is large scale retirement plans that are affected with thousands of people in the retirement plans.

Did you miss the bit where I said I don't neccacarily like what they are doing?

Yes what they are doing is wrong.  I was just pointing out to those who were making useless threats and passing them off as some kind of script kiddie ANON group that these hackers are much more sofisticated than that and pointing out a couple of their more impressive hacks and basic modus operendi.

How long were their previous attacks sustained for?

My queue only lasts for 1 day :(

Someone had suggested 10 days, I sincerely hope it's not that long. I am so damn close to my mach !

What they're doing may be criminal, but then again, so was what the American revolutionists did according to British law at the time. What a lot of social activists in the past have done was also criminal at the time, but it brought about change.

While I respect their motivation and goal, I don't fully agree with their methods and general immaturity about how they go about it.

I am not usually the one to call down evil on someone, but I hope these hackers die. People that get entertainment from hacking into companies just for laughs should be punished. And  they just posted "lol look at how mad the leauge of legends players are". Yea... I hope they die.

Not sure what they have against Sony. Also it's not like CCP didn't want to release Dust on the 360.

I object to the Founding Father comparison, the companies need to be shaken from their complacency sure, but it is unjust to drag the general public into this. Revolutions need to be taken up with solemn, sober and responsible planning and principle, (as it was in America) or it will end up like the Russian, Chinese, or French revolutions, spinning out of control, and playing into the hands of the very kind of people you apposed to begin with. There is a lack of foresight in all this that worries me. History aside, ccp and EVE players do not deserve this.

They're revolting over the attempts of the US and other government's efforts to restrict the Internet, along with corporations and other entities who they believe overstep their bounds and take advantage of and abuse consumers/individuals.

Calling it terrorism is a far cry from what it really is. They've not caused any physical harm, let alone any fatalities, to anyone. Terrorism's Intent is to create terror, where as these guys are using mischief to cause irritation. Trying to proclaim their actions are an "act of war" or "terrorism" just emboldens them, because they think it's funny that some people are blowing it out of proporation.

Again I don't condone their methods, but I do understand their motivation.

Don't be ridiculous.  You usually have intelligent things to say but that someone could even think this let alone say it just blows my mind.  The only "motivation" for this behavior is pure self-indulgent epeen stroking.  To even include such people in the same sentence with a Thomas Jefferson or John Adams is woefully inaccurate.  There's no revolution here.  No repression.  No higher morals.  There's just a few kids with an overwhelming desire for more twitter followers.  There's not a shred of evidence to suggest otherwise and pointing out what amounts to irrelevant semantic analogies is nothing short of trolling on an epic scale.

Terrorism is exactly what it is. Terrorism is the use of violence and threats to intimidate or coerce. Terrorism is not restricted to physical harm and fatalities.

Is it on the same level as a suicide bomber? Probably not, but it's still terrorism because they are trying to intimidate and unsettle, especially if it's for politcal reasons.

I'll be impresed if they take down a real government website (not a privately owned one) or at least Blizzard or something lol.

I've said a few times that I don't support their methods, but I do support their motivation. My point was that in the past, several forms of activism were considered against the law, but their intent was for a greater good. I understand the motivation behind their attacks, even though I don't agree with all of their methods or targets.

In the end, they're not causing phsyical harm to anyone, they're just causing mischief.
