Little history one of the first announcements from LOLSEC was they wanted to take down Sony as a company and it's online presence. CCP recently announced that Dust was going to be a PS3 exclusive. Thats why CCP was attacked.
The escapist was attacked probably because they have been publishing articles on every one of LOLSECs' hacks and the escapist community hasn't been overly supportive.
By the way these guys are pretty skilled hackers not 4chan script kiddies. They have broken at least 2 fedral web security companies got data and changed websites. They arn't exactly white hats but they arn't entirly black hats either. Generally they have posted who their target is going to be a week before they do the hack and then still get in. They then post what they did to get in and what they stole so hopefully the companies affected can fix the loophole (the Nintendo and Bethsuda hacks they did this at least). They apparently have also fended off attempts by other hacker including ANNON to close down their server with ease.
I don't neccacarily agree with what they are doing but to pass them over as just script kiddies with nothing better to do would be a huge mistake. These people are seriously skilled and should be taken seriously. Sofar the correct response in my opinion is they are showing us pretty much what the more paranoid amoungst us has been saying for a good long time. Nothing online is safe so trust no one with your personal information not big companies and not the government because if someone with skills wants it they can and will get it.
I can't agree with your interpretation of these peoples motives or moral standing. The way I see it these people are criminals and should be prosecuted to the fullest extent when found. They endanger not only the companies they attack, but the people whose information they steal AND the welfare of the people who invest in these companies. The investors might be the worst part of it since for the most part it is large scale retirement plans that are affected with thousands of people in the retirement plans.
WOUDLN'T IT BE BEST IF WE THE PEOPLE RESPONDED WITH MASS LAWSUITS AGAINST THESE LOLSEC INDIVIDUALS?
there should be an international treaty to make large scale hacking a crime against humanity and punishable by death, that would make childish hackers think twice before they attack
I've said a few times that I don't support their methods, but I do support their motivation. My point was that in the past, several forms of activism were considered against the law, but their intent was for a greater good. I understand the motivation behind their attacks, even though I don't agree with all of their methods or targets.
In the end, they're not causing phsyical harm to anyone, they're just causing mischief.
Firstly my point that methods should reflect your motivation, not end up undermining them, secondly, just because they are not going around assaulting people bodily does not mean people are unharmed by this, how can you know what direct or indirect effect this will have on people? The hacker’s strategy cares little for those caught in the cross-fire, and I guarantee they will not have foreseen or desired all the consequences of this.
Not to mention that their “cause” could just have easily be mere rationalization, we do know these people, and have no reason to trust them. Talk of "greater good" should send shivers down the spine of anyone with common sense, (or have seen Hot Fuzz.)

The internet is owned by the Telecommunications companies that own the hardware it rides on. If at any time they deem it in thier best interests, they could take it away from everyone. You, and I, only pay for the right to have access to the internet, we don't own a single byte on it. These hackers are gaining illegal access to software/hardware which is owned by a particular company, and those who own that hardware are the ones with the right to bring action against them.
Just because you eat at a certain resturant every day, does not mean you have the right to sue someone who breaks in there at night and steals your favorite pie. It never was your pie in the first place.
What they're doing may be criminal, but then again, so was what the American revolutionists did according to British law at the time. What a lot of social activists in the past have done was also criminal at the time, but it brought about change.
While I respect their motivation and goal, I don't fully agree with their methods and general immaturity about how they go about it.
Yeah wait until they manage to give enough excuses for the whole internet to be locked down because progress is bad for business baby!

I don't agree. They are vandals and should face the same charges any vandal would. Add the lawsuits for reparations, not to mention years of community service to repay the damages they have done should be sufficient. I don't like the idea of labeling every crime terrorism or a crime against humanity.

Don't be ridiculous. You usually have intelligent things to say but that someone could even think this let alone say it just blows my mind. The only "motivation" for this behavior is pure self-indulgent epeen stroking. To even include such people in the same sentence with a Thomas Jefferson or John Adams is woefully inaccurate. There's no revolution here. No repression. No higher morals. There's just a few kids with an overwhelming desire for more twitter followers. There's not a shred of evidence to suggest otherwise and pointing out what amounts to irrelevant semantic analogies is nothing short of trolling on an epic scale.
As I said, I don't agree with their methods, but I do believe that their is some motivation beyond 'lulz' for some of their members. Sony was hacked being of the whole Geohotz incidicent where Sony basically tried to destroy the guy simply for giving other peopel a method of modifying a phsyical product they purchased. Do I agree with Lulsec hacking and leaking user information? No, but I do agree that Sony did deserve a good kick in the pants for being so overzelous about supressing consumers from being able to alter things they purchased and rightfully own.
What's more ridiculous is the fact that there are people calling for these people to be lynched or executed, even though the worst they've done is caused minor inconvenience. Is that what we've come to as a society? Where if someone else causes a minor inconvenience to our entertainment they deserve to die? Honestly, these kinds of reactions just feed these guys to do even more of what they have been doing.
They're revolting over the attempts of the US and other government's efforts to restrict the Internet, along with corporations and other entities who they believe overstep their bounds and take advantage of and abuse consumers/individuals.
Calling it terrorism is a far cry from what it really is. They've not caused any physical harm, let alone any fatalities, to anyone. Terrorism's Intent is to create terror, where as these guys are using mischief to cause irritation. Trying to proclaim their actions are an "act of war" or "terrorism" just emboldens them, because they think it's funny that some people are blowing it out of proporation.
Again I don't condone their methods, but I do understand their motivation.
Yeah they "said so", but why should I or anybody else believe them?
What if they really ARE the people they are claiming they attacking and they say things just to throw everyone else off, everyone of the unsuspected sheeple, that have much more to lose without internet.
FAT CATS DON'T WANT THE INTERNET! IT GENERATES TOO MUCH INTERFERENCE WITH THEIR WAR PLANS AND ALL.

I have a reasonably good idea why people revolted against Colonial rule in America and elsewhere, remind me what these folks are "fighting" for?
Looks more like simple terrorism to me, and should be put down with the firmest of methods.

In general, terrorists attack targets that have nothing to do with the conflict in question, which is what these folks have done here, unless you feel MMORPG games and other game related websites somehow are involved in the conspiracy to restrict internet freedom. (In fact, I'll bet most of those folks would support the free internet movement).
If you're really at war with someone, you attack them directly, so where are the attacks on the Justice Dept, or some major evil corporate entity that "rules" the Internet?
They're smart, attack those folks and someone might actually take the trouble to track them down and find them, and I do believe if someone wants you found bad enough, they can do it.

They have hacked at least 2 fedral security companies in the last 2 weaks and this latest one also took out the US Senate site. This time it was a DDOS attack. But don't fool yourselves the people that make up lolsec have proved to be pretty skilled in their hacks sofar and also seem quite capable of defending themselves from counter hacking and hiding themselves.

its different for everyone in that scene.
for some its about standing up to the man
for some its about getting a good security job
for some its about fame
for some its about power
for some its about a different frame of thinking. for years, just to be on the internet, you had to have a certain level of technical skills to use it well, let alone to play a game. as the bar has been lowered year after year so has the intelligence level of the average internet user. for a larger percentage of that scene, they really believe poeple that dont have that level of intelligence and technical skill have no business being here and letting the floodgates open has basically destroyed the dialog of the internet. although i feel guilty about it a litle, i tend to agree. i really wish about 80% of the people here today, that werent here 15 years ago, would just go away. the majority of everyone on the net now, is basically worthless imo. i realize thats selfish, but nobody is perfect i guess.
Games i'm playing right now...

Great. So if I start posting on my blog about how irresponsible I think these attacks are, and I start getting a lot of traffic, are they going to hack me too? I honestly don't see how these guys can be considered "activists" given the language they use and the way they flaunt their actions. They think they're untouchable and do whatever they want without any consideration for how it may affect the little guy. It's basically terrorism, and it reeks of arrogance and condescension more than anything else.

... And for the poster right above... Internet is what.. about 20 years old ?... People used to live without it.. "Imagine a world without the internet".. God kid, go play outside..
The lesser of two evils is still evil.
There is nothing more dangerous than a true believer.
great.. a bunch of geeky nutjobs with delusions of grandeur... well.. at least they got their wish.. now everybody hates them... seriously.. these guys have got more chance of getting lynched than ever getting laid..
its different for everyone in that scene.
for some its about standing up to the man
for some its about getting a good security job
for some its about fame
for some its about power
for some its about a different frame of thinking. for years, just to be on the internet, you had to have a certain level of technical skills to use it well, let alone to play a game. as the bar has been lowered year after year so has the intelligence level of the average internet user. for a larger percentage of that scene, they really believe poeple that dont have that level of intelligence and technical skill have no business being here and letting the floodgates open has basically destroyed the dialog of the internet. although i feel guilty about it a litle, i tend to agree. i really wish about 80% of the people here today, that werent here 15 years ago, would just go away. the majority of everyone on the net now, is basically worthless imo. i realize thats selfish, but nobody is perfect i guess.
Games i'm playing right now...
"In short, I thought NGE was a very bad idea" - Raph Koster talking about NGE on his blog at raphkoster.com
Funny that you say that. It's not lulz, but... http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-13762626.
It's basically terrorism, and it reeks of arrogance and condescension more than anything else.
lulzec, do something trully beneficial for society: take down WoW.
lol.. and then they'll have another 11 million people mad at them.. just lynch the wazzocks already..
