@ OP, it's childish to think that cartoon-like graphics are childish. I am not a child and I love cartoon-like graphics as they are more creative and are funnier. Plus they are easier on your computer and age much better than realistic graphics which are crap in about a year or so....
The fact that you are all making some generalisations about the age of someone playing certain games means you're all CHILDISH!
Mate read more carefully. i dont have anything against cartoon-like graphics. I said about cartoon-like graphics COMBINED with childish content and gameplay. And i dont have anything against the WHOLE genre just the rate they keep popping out and their ratings.
On the contrary i like cartoonish graphics. I m certainly going to play Rusty Hearts
It is because not everyone can upgrade there computer or have computer that can handle real looking graphics plus they don't age well they look out dated in about 2-3 years. Stylized graphics age alot better and you don't need a gaming computer to play them. This is why WoW sold so well. You don't even need a graphics card to play the game if you have a newer montherboard.
You 're right about that, but WoW may had those kind of graphics but it was a REAL game, had a great storyline, had much content, and although i do not like it, it's a great game for it's kind. I was reffering to games like
Yohoho! Puzzle pirates, and Wizard 101 , or hello kitty or wonderking. And there are tons others like those. Do you believe they deserve their ratings? I think some of them shouldn't even be on the list. One question that comes in mind though, is who votes so much for these games? are there really so many people playing those? do they have such a big community ? It's just confusing for me
Those games are aimed at kids in the first place and you should rated as such. If you played a game you think is the greatest game for kids you should give it a high score. More than graphics and gameplay go into rating a game. You also have you have to think about who are they trying to get to buy and play the game and how the gameplay fits into that.
in WoW the warchief calls a woman a bit*h. That's for kids? They even have a beer festival event which rewards you for getting as drunk as possible. That's for kids? Hey they even call others a a$$hole.

Which is why World of Warcraft is rated Teen.
Despite all the shit it takes from people on these boards, WoW isn't aimed at kids. It's aimed at teens and older. The rating reflects that.
Seriusly. I mean, to a point i get it, gaming industry is evolving and now MMOs can target other ages and genders too, but for gods shake i do not understand where all those childish cartoon games came from, and why are they even getting developed at this rate, and what confuses me more is their ratings. Some of them are REALLY overrated and I do not understand why. Are they so poppular?
I don't get it either, except that maybe because they are FTP. So every kid from here to Timbuktoo can download it without mommy or daddy knowing and then get all their friends playing it at school...or...I don't know, I'm just guessing really.
Might have to do with it being cheaper to make cartoony graphics as opposed to realistic. It's almost to the point, that I wish MMORPG.com would make a FTPguru sight so we can separate the 2 types of games. But then...they would have Lotro over there so...oh well, nevermind. -_-
if you talking about childish games in general, I believe this is due to the effect the Nintendo Wii and the IPhone has had on videogames. Also keep in mind how the media has also changed. When I was younger I remember cartoons were more mature and action packed. Post High School Musical, I notice all cartoons and TV shows on Disney, Nick, and Cartoon have changed culturally. Things are more girly like and cutie cutie babyish. What happen to the 90s Xmen/Spiderman /toonami cartoons that were hardcore? Damn even looney Tunes was more hard core and mature than most of the shows now days. This trend is moving over to video games. The MMORPG genre of gaming, not so much, since its based on D&D. YEAH I KNOW DND HAD A CARTOON, SO DONT GO THERE.
I don't get it either, except that maybe because they are FTP. So every kid from here to Timbuktoo can download it without mommy or daddy knowing and then get all their friends playing it at school...or...I don't know, I'm just guessing really.
If the kids in question are under 13, mommy and daddy are required by law to know what they're downloading:
This is getting kinda off-topic ^^ so i wanna clarrify, I made this topic to express my confusion and concerns not about the existance of cartoon-like childish games(and by that i dont by any chance mean WoW or FF or whatever NORMAL games out there), but about the NUMBER and poppularity of them. More and more of those games keep popping out of nowhere. And i m not just reffering to the completely cartoonish graphics, but to the whole gaming experience that only a child would enjoy (and thats fine by me, at our age children shold probably have their own gaming market), though it's a well known fact that many adults are not only playing but are addicted to those games.
And just so i'm not misunderstood again, i'm reffering to games like Yohoho! Puzzle pirates, and Wizard 101 , or hello kitty or wonderking.
Please list a few of the games you are talking about.
Kyleran: "Now there's the real trick, learning to accept and enjoy a game for what
it offers rather than pass on what might be a great playing experience
because it lacks a few features you prefer."
John Henry Newman: "A man would do nothing if he waited until he could do it so well that no one could find fault."
FreddyNoNose: "A good game needs no defense; a bad game has no defense." "Easily digested content is just as easily forgotten."
LacedOpium: "So the question that begs to be asked is, if you are not interested in
the game mechanics that define the MMORPG genre, then why are you
playing an MMORPG?"
I would rather play something stylized graphic wise than what you see are like sketches of real life.... only that the sketches do not support high polygon count. Technical limitation and attempting to model the game after the real world is just epic fail.
This is the best signature ever. Well, it is really up to you to decide. :x
I would rather play something stylized graphic wise than what you see are like sketches of real life.... only that the sketches do not support high polygon count. Technical limitation and attempting to model the game after the real world is just epic fail.
This. Plus, realism ages very poorly. The first few times we see something that's close to lifelike, we're impressed, but as tec improves and we get even better realism, the old stuff pales in comparison. However, graphics that start out stylized and cartoony may suffer in some areas, they don't fall prey to the fatal comparisons that ultra-realistic ones do.
well it all started with "anime styled" MMOs, which i was down for. They were cool, but probably cause i was 13 or 14 when they started coming out. Now i'm 20, almost 21, and i can't stand them. I hate games with a bunch of kids that cant spell or just ask for free items. It brings down the economy man... lol
Same here, i m about 22. It's not just that I don't stand them, it surprises me how poppular and overrated they are. It seems just few years passed after MMOs birth and not only the gaming industry got f*cked up, but the gaming community turns out to be worse and worse as time passes by
Sorry, but as far as that stuff goes, it's not the games changing as a whole, it's you.
It's just something that happens as you move from your childhood into adulthood. Your perspective changed radically in a short period of time...but all the things you say have happened in the last 10 years, people in their 30s will say happened in the last 20...and people in their 40s in the last 30, etc. etc.
Trust me...I was gaming in EQ, AC, DAOC etc. when you were around 10 - 14 years old, and your generation wasn't any more mature or enlightened than the current ones. Bad spelling, begging, trolling, etc. Things haven't changed, you've just grown up.
I would rather play something stylized graphic wise than what you see are like sketches of real life.... only that the sketches do not support high polygon count. Technical limitation and attempting to model the game after the real world is just epic fail.
Exactly. Trying to aim for hyper-realism when you're ALSO building a game for thousands to play at the same time on the same server = a technical nightmare. Better to have a stylized look that is uniquely yours and which the widest possible number of players can handle than go for super realistic graphics that few could handle.
Super realism really only works in single player games or games where multiplayer is limited to just a few players online at the same time. It also works on console games where everyone playing is using the same exact hardware, enabling the devs to optimize their graphics accordingly. In an MMO? Not really. At that point all it does is show the flaws in the rest of the game. If the graphics are realistic but the game sucks, what does all that time and effort on looks matter?
I don't get it either, except that maybe because they are FTP. So every kid from here to Timbuktoo can download it without mommy or daddy knowing and then get all their friends playing it at school...or...I don't know, I'm just guessing really.
If the kids in question are under 13, mommy and daddy are required by law to know what they're downloading:
Just because it's required by some obscure law somewhere doesn't mean it's happening. I remember getting away with watching R rated movies quite easily without my parents knowledge, growing up. Same can be applied to games.
But that is the point here. My point was pointing at the sheer quantity of these types of games for kids to play in. Not whether they were suitable for kids or not.
The graphics is often so cartoony because it is easier to make than realistic looking games, and it ages somewhat better. In China and South Korea it is also popular since Manhwa is huge there.
Otherwise, it is my impression that it is foy the Yanks that the games don't have much nudity, foul language or blood, particularly nudity. Most game devs are Americans as well so they focus mainly on the US market and making New England reach for it's pitchforks is probably not the best idea unless you are Rockstar, I wish they would make a MMO.
I don't think most players care one way or the other, it is more for parents and religious nutjobs that there are so fw games like AoC. I think I only seen one post about someone who were upset because AoC was immoral and that guy had a crucifix as avatar picture.
Myself, I pick the game that is most fun. I don't care if it is "adult" or not.
I would have to agree.
For me I am not a fan of the Cartoonish looking mmos type games.
More often or not I don't mind if it is on consoles.
LOL for instance I would rather play HON or DOTA. Of course I haven't played it guess I am just being a hater.
Some people just prefer that type of art style. I can understand if someone doesn't like it themselves, I don't care for it much either when it's done to the extreme, but I don't get why some people feel the need to lash out at a graphic style of all things.
Or is it really that mind boggling that a group of people like something you don't?
Realism is much harder to get right than cartoon-like graphics or art style. The more realistic you get the more you start running into the Uncanny Valley effect.
Seriusly. I mean, to a point i get it, gaming industry is evolving and now MMOs can target other ages and genders too, but for gods shake i do not understand where all those childish cartoon games came from, and why are they even getting developed at this rate, and what confuses me more is their ratings.

RPGs have always had childish cartoony characters and such. Did you ever play the original final fantasies? Chocoboos and Moogles are very childish.
If you ask me, somewhere along the way you picked up the idea that you're too cool for school
Games are meant to be fun, not necessarily realistic. If you want realism play a flight simulator or call of duty.

Bah humbug
And you're only cheating yourself because LOL is superior to HoN (maybe not DOTA but neither is HoN tbh).
I don't get it either, except that maybe because they are FTP. So every kid from here to Timbuktoo can download it without mommy or daddy knowing and then get all their friends playing it at school...or...I don't know, I'm just guessing really.

Obscure law? It's American federal law. Every game developer, every MMO, and every website on the internet that originates in the United States is bound by it. Yes, ALL of them. And it's actually enforced by the FTC.
It's not obscure law just because you've never heard of it. Film ratings? Not a law. Those are entirely voluntary. COPPA? Not so much. AMC, Regal, and all the movie theaters aren't going to get fined and penalized by the government if some theater clerk lets a 14, 15, or 16 year old in to see an R rated movie.
And the quantity of the games is irrelevant. The point is, parents are required by law to know what their kids are downloading, and damn near every website out there refuses to deal with kids under 13 because of the sheer amount of paperwork involved for them. They'd rather deal with the parents, so it doesn't matter how many of those games are out there.
I don't mind cartoony graphic in games, or weir , cute ,etc artstyles. I DO CARE that there is no alternative to it.
Show me any AAA game with realistic graphic that cameout lately. There is none. All are either cartoony or anime-like.
Your charater sooner or later start to glow like Christmas Tree, has oversizedswords, ridiculous looks ,etc.
I dont have nothing against , but I want some diversity! I want some games with cartoonish/anime graphic but also games with realistic graphic! Is that so much to ask?

I guess you mean MMO's because Crysis 2 all of the COD's etc are going for realistic.
Anyway, the reason why so many games look cartoonie is because they are typically more scalable which provides for a larger user base. This is of course what the investors care about. Also, many of the most successful games use this style: WoW, LoL etc.
The child cartoon like graphics is to appeal to the pedo audience.
I mean..Look at how popular dateline with chris hansen is!

I don't think they should be focusing on "pedo audience", not many in numbers , aren't able to afford buying a game or mini-transactions unless their parents pay for it, and after all I dont think kids these days like cartoon-like graphics, they prefer outstanding graphics and spell/skill effects.
Personally I only see problem with games that are explicitly featuring oversexualized characters in their ads just to attract a bunch of horny teenagers (League of Angels, im looking at you)
