Are those lightsabers or nerf bats?

ChieftanChieftan Member UncommonPosts: 1,188

Watched the Esseles video and I was really disappointed with their implementation of the lightsaber in combat.

I know balancing a powerful weapon is difficult but surely they could have come up with something better than having jedi whale away on bad guys with the lightsaber just kinda bouncing off.

It would make alot more sense if the jedi had to spend most of his time in combat blocking laser blasts and using force powers for defense...and using his attack swings very conservatively and carefully.  That way when he does attack, it hurts.

This just looks like a cartoon where lightsabers are just there to look cool and the lore of the series has no bearing on their implementation at all.

Lightsabers never were all powerfull weapons, in SW lore there is plenty of materail that can hold/block a LS.

that said, how many times have you played a mmo were you shoot someone or swing a sword at a npc head and all it does is dammage it a little.

Its a game, Stop being bored and find someting to do rather then making up complains you already should know the general aswer and reason for.

its a balancing power for sure, for me an Jedi/sith is supposed to be overpowered, but that isnt possible when u allow players to be both force-weilders and no-force-weilders, hence the nerf bat. so for the sake of balancing in a mmo like SW:TOR light sabers gonna be as it is now.

People seem to be pretty flexable about what they will accept so far as the appearance of weapons. Thirteen million people play a game where they carry around a sword the size of a Buick on their back. I am with you though on this. Detail matters. Maybe it is still early.

I may know the least here, but I am the loudest about what I do know.

Too bad Darth didn't have any in his arm :)

The essential issue: The movies show those sabers (ugh how little they resemble sabers) slicing through anything and everything.

Games can't have godmode weapons and still be good games.

Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.

The real problem is that the Dept of Health and Safety were a faction to be dreaded and feared in the time of the Old Republic. That is why all the weapons in SWTOR are toned down because no one wants to end up getting a big fat fine.

Here ya go, they are not the "end all".....from Wiki

The lightsaber's blade cuts through most substances without resistance. It leaves cauterized wounds in flesh, but can be deflected by another lightsaber's blade, or by energy shields. Some exotic saber-proof materials have been introduced in the Expanded Universe

You can hit 20 times and do 10 damage every time for a total of 200 damage, or, as the OP says, mostly defend and block and hit twice and do 100 damage every time.

I guess in a universe where jedi are as common as peanuts it would make sense that force armor that should be rare is also common.

Would work for pve, but would become a disaster for pvp if the spike damage was that out of touch with other classes, every team that only fielded lightsabers would pretty much rule the pvp area. While this might represent SW better it would be disaster for the overall game.

Not that this lack of realism really bothers be but...

I'm guessing that we can explain it away by saying that every single paltry thug or monster in SWTOR just happens to have these "exotic saber-proof materials?"  It kind of reminds me of the old superman cartoon where every thug he encountered just happened to have a piece of kryptonite on them :).

Yeah watching some of the video I had to cringe at how useless lightsabers were... maybe the Mando really sold a lot of their saber resistent iron a long, long, long time ago?

I wouldn't doubt if this was part of why the SWG devs originally didn't want Jedi as a profession, in order to do them justice the entire system is out of balance.

I seem to remember stormtroopers getting shot once from a blaster and dropping dead.  Its a game, and an rpg based game at that.  Numbers and balancing are key, it was the same way in KotOR.  Heck in most FPS games it isnt 1 shot 1 kill, except for maybe headshots.

Kinda strange people cant pull off a little suspention of disbelief

It's called Cortosis. And during the Old Republic era, it was not really super rare.

    http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Cortosis-weave

In fact, a man named Des, who would later become Darth Bane was a miner on a planet that was full of the stuff. The republic bought ship after ship of Cortosis from the mining company specifically for use in armor and weapons to fight the Sith.

That is one of the biggest issues I have with this game, is the fact that there will be so many jedi/sith that it will be almost annoying. But, in the time set this is set in there were litterally thousands of jedi and sith in the lore so it's not all bad. the only thing people don't understand is the time span it is set in. I still wish you had to start with a different class and do some quest line to become jedi.. i miss the old SWG days where jedi were like a rarity.

By the same token, shouldn't shooting a fireball at a rat instantly destroy it ? and maybe start other fires ? Or in a game like Modern Warfare..shouldn't one shot kill instead of give you a little red pulse that you can go hide behind a wall for 3 seconds and be super duper fine again ?

SWtOR is a game, just like every other mmo, or fps, or rpg or whatever. It's not based on realism, don't try to stuff it in a box because you saw it in a movie. Use the same imagnation you do with other games to allow bending the laws of physics..the game already does with space travel! Exceeding 300,000 km/s and all that to travel from planet to planet.

Yeah they've been suspending belief for decades now in order to play rpgs but suddely it's a problem with this game. I don't buy it, people who already dislike this game are just looking for excuses not to like it and to convince others not to as well.

Kotor was no different and I don't recall anybody brining this argument up for that game.

Never had any problems on how lightsabers have been portrayed in other SW games, like Jedi Knight series or KOTOR. This is a non-issue unless you are a person who needs everything to be as ultrarealistic as possible. The same argument could be made to almost any game. Just look at  FPSs which allow your character to recover almost instantly from bullets. Games have to bend the rules of realism to leave room for fun.

I hate having to be the guy who points this out....One of the first NPCs in Knights of the Old Republic tells you how energy shields are used by just about everyone, and how they block energy weapons, and that a vibroblade works best against them. As in almost everyone has lightsaber protection.

I think its more how un-impressive and generic the combat system/engine is. From the video's I have seen I get the feeling like I played games with this combat style/system 8-10 years ago, its very very stale. The combat system being so generic is a good reason not to buy the game for me, since I tend to spend alot of my time in combat. I'm personally tired of the wow-like oldschool combat systems. I also didn't see their "Interactive combat" they were yapping about in another vid either, you know where there is some interactivity? It just was generic 2 chars playing their animations out each turn, which Bioware actually made fun of.. yet they end up doing it in their game. It kinda makes me wonder what else they promised and most likely will fail to deliver on.. Hopefully its not too much.

Being a pessimist is a win-win pattern of thinking. If you're a pessimist (I'll admit that I am!) you're either:

    A. Proven right (if something bad happens)

    or

    B. Pleasantly surprised (if something good happens)

Either way, you can't lose! Try it out sometime!

Yea tell me about it just look at Lightsabers sens then did it bounce on npc armor then you fighting that is so stupid was this best skills animation BW could come up whit that really sucks big time lots of details in game is like that.

talk about making somehting out of nothing... Are we talking about a virtual representation of a fictional weapon from a fictional universe.

But if that is all it takes to bring you slamming in to reality... I think fiction per se is not your cup of tea... My tip.. chess... or checkers....

This have been a good conversation

This really cracks me up...as if you could swing a nice sharp sword and have it bounce off someones neck. Lightsabers, swords, guns, whatever, will never have a realistic effect in these games... they can't. really wouldn't be that much fun. Even in games like conan where you can whack off someones head... you still hit them tens of times with your sword before the fatality.

Of all things to complain about...didn't expect this.

Even with all the technology used in the production of video games combat physics isn't a strong suit in many if any games at all, I don't see what makes this game deserving of special attention for something that every other game on the market does as well (including I'm sure whatever game you are playing currently).

People have a problem with light sabers but hyperdrives are OK? the Mind boggles.

I don't want a game where I get shot once and begin bleeding to death unless i have surgery in the next 10 minutes and spend 6 weeks recovering before returning to combat. Mabye we could have the screen go blank then play weird cut scenes or suddenly have your IFF inverted to simulate PTS.

    This does not sound fun.

In the same vein, Light Sabers will have to wittle away with damage like every other weapon in games. I had to give a mob 2 headshots sometimes when playing borderlands. 2 Headshots? What? it's just the way it is. TOR players will be lucky. They could have made it the Old Old Republic where the light sabers had powercords and were only good for a few swing before draining.

    There is NO miracle patch.

95% of what you see in beta won't change by launch.

    Hope is not a stategy.
