I'm quite pleased with the Sylvari technically, and I'd like to play one as an alt, but I'm un able because of the ridicilous lore of them, it just makes me facepalm and would haunt me all the time while playing one.

"Nearly two hundred and fifty years ago, a human soldier named Ronan found a strange seed during his journeys and tucked it away to give to his daughter when he returned home. Sadly, by the time he reached his village, it had been destroyed, wiped out by the White Mantle. Ronan planted the seed upon his family’s graves instead. Twenty-five years ago, the first sylvari awakened."

I mean come on... Some random guy founds a "strange seed" and plants it somewhere and a couple of hundreds year later you are born from the tree planted by that lottery winner dude. Just say something like "A strange tree grew 250 years before the first Sylvari awakened from within it." or something along those lines and leave the random guy out of it. Yes it is THAT silly... -.-

I better not read too deep into the lore of other races to not find something like "Jared the mushroom collector coughed a strange hairball into a pond of water and after 370 years the first of a race called Charr had evolved from the hairball and emerged from the pond, eager to wage war with everything that disagrees".

Hmm... if people turn away from the sylvari because of them being too pretty, witty, and fae then that means that they'll likely just end up having more eccentric and interesting peple in general playing them (aside from the youngsters and those who pick them arbitrarily). I'm kind of expecting that of the charr, too. So that's something we'll have in common. If you think that people are being too arbitrarily judgemental based upon appearances alone, stop by the Black Citadel and I'll buy you a whiskey.

Really though, we need to not make arbitrary assumptions about a race based upon their appearance. I'd like to see someone try that and then get snapped in half by an angry sylvari, or get ethically philosophised until your ears fall off by me as a charr. :p

Poor sylvari. Looks like the charr will have some common ground with them, there. >_>

    @Kuinn

The charr were on Tyria first and occupied it millennia before the Forgotten arrived, let alone the humans, it was their land before all these upstarts turned up and started killing them. First the Forgotten who wanted to brainwash everyone into worshipping the Six Gods (good luck brainwashing the charr unless you're also charr), and would commit anything up to and including genocide in order to try to force worship out of people, and then the humans who were apparently sicced on the charr by a bunch of gods who were pissed off because the charr slighted their egos by refusing to believe in them, giving the humans divine, godlike powers so that they might wipe out those 'mindless beasts.'

I actually feel really sorry for the charr. All they wanted was to romp around their homelands and be charr, but noooo~, that's not permitted, is it? It's one bloody war after another for the poor bastards. No wonder they felt they had to become exceedingly militaristic and disciplined just to survive. In fact, I'd be very interested to see how the charr would have turned out if not for the invasions of the Forgotten and humankind. i suspect it would have been quite, quite different. I hope they do some sort of what if quest in Guild Wars 2 to examine that. If not for the setbacks the charr would probably have their own space program by now.

And if I'm angry at any invading forces for anything, it's robbing the charr of their space program. :| Horrible people.

(Yes, this is all tongue in cheek.)

So the charr lore is kind of silly too, actually, but only in the sense of what on Tyria are they going to do to these poor bastards next? The history of the charr has been one of constant strife and a struggle to survive. They've had to overcome more than any other race, including up to having to deal with divine powers, and even brainwashing thanks to the Flame Legion, who were likely in turn brainwashed by the pets of the human god Abaddon, the titans, since it'd be pretty hard to fight against a god in that context. (Something that they've been rightly outcasted for.) So yeah, the charr background is a bit silly too. I mean, hell, why not just throw giant, mountain sized golems at them and meteorites too? Might as well. :P

    Poor bastards.

??? You have me confused.  Dwarves sacrificed themselves to save Tyria in GW1.  So because of this lore point you are uninterested in the game?    I guess LOTR is a much better game for your liking...except that the Dwarven race in that game (books) was under constant pressure and their numbers were dwindling.

Dwarves are stone-cold chillin'. It's been recently confirmed that there are no non-petrified Dwarves out there any more. But hey, it was a heroic death.
Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing.

I like the race design alot, but I do agree the lore is stupid

Oh, I have every intention of playing one. It's just not quite what I wanted.

Obvious inspiration/copy is obvious unfortunately :|. With that said, it's still a much needed graphical overhall.

I believe the inspiration for sylvari came from a far older source than DAoC.

Dwarves apparently exist in the game as NPCs and they are made of living stone.

Thank you for the class, I may sigh in relief now, and know more about the Charr, including there's no strange hairballs involved at the beginning of time, none that we know about anyway.

I'm a girl and Sylvari has been my favorite race since... forever. c: They look amazing! I love races that like nature / water.

I want to reborn as a Sylvari.

I am male, and I really like the Sylvari design. I will not play one as my main, but I will definitely make one and explorer the dream and my new home with the pale tree.

This ain't no science fiction game, it's FANTASY mmorpg. They don't have to base everything on scientific facts, real world biology or how likely to happen some event is.

Sylvari look like homosexual plant elves.  (No offense to homosexuals but elves and plant people are really lame)  That is my honest impression of them.  If I were a homosexual hippy LOTR groupie I would probably be extatic.

Agian, this isn't an insult to homosexuals or even hippies.  LOTR groupies can kiss my *** though.

I give them credit for re designing but over all it is still 'meh'. I will stick to Norn and Charr.

I like their design, much improved from their previous look. I'd like to see how they deal with armor and gear in the game though, if I see a lot of sylvari dressed up in human wear... well... then my opinion might change quite a bit, because I don't see myself liking that look anytime soon.

On the flip side, having only "plantlike" clothing would also get boring over time, though they could maybe make some sort of plant/cloth crossovers, "living suits" or the like. It'll be interesting to see what they do with that.

I might play one, though I always start off with regular old humans...

You dont have to base anything on scientific facts on scifi (science FICTION) games either, and nobody has asked anything like that I believe, so I'm not quite sure I follow.

I hate the look, and will never roll one.

i hate that devs allways have to call their things unique

doubt any of the GW devs played DAoC? they actually had nearly the same name, different origin, similiar look. but sylvan and sylvari aint THAT different after all eh?

i  just wish they'd be more carefull with their "unique" claims ^^

I'm female and the sylvari have gone from my least fave race to my joint favourite (with charr). The only race I dislike now are the norn, and as someone who plays human 99% of the time in other games... I have to say, Arenanet have done a great job with their races.

The lore will probably be elaborated upon in the game.

"Those who stand at the top determine what's wrong and what's right. This very place is neutral ground! Justice will prevail, you say? But of course it will! Whoever wins this war becomes justice!"

I like the Sylvari because of their innocence, like seeing the world with new eyes. The lore behind them is beautiful and I completely am surprised at how well the redesign turned out. I feel they have come into their own rather being leafy-clothed elven folk. (I love elves, but new is good too!)

One concern is how armour will be worn and if they can pick up normal armour drops. I guess this remains to be seen, but I am hopeful.

Arenanet confirmed that they can wear normal armor as well.

Ah, good to hear! I didn't catch that, but I've not read everything yet. Thanks.

Oh really so the Sylvan in DAOC were birthed from a pale tree that is as tall as a skyscraper, and that tree in that game became self aware too? You also mean that the Sylvan in DAOC all shared in a dream while they were being cared for by the pale tree, that gave them knowledge and understanding of the world around them. This dream also in DAOC expanded based on the lives of the Sylvan so each generation born could have different knowledge at birth than the other Sylvan.  Also the Sylvan were born as adults and had dreams and passions that they received from their mother the pale tree?

Yes you are so right not many differences at all between a Sylvari and Sylvan, I am so glad we have the unique police around to take a bird’s eye view on a subject and say things are not unique. After all from a bird’s eye view there is not much difference between a hill and mountain so why do we even have both words, they are not unique!
