This is the wrong place to get a fair assessment of GW and TOR. I am not saying I know exactly where the right place is but MMORPG.com has become so rampant with starry eyed GW2 fans who think pure gold is going to fall out the box when they get it they are not a valid opinion.
Look up the cynical Brit (total Biscut) watch his vids on both games at Gamescon and his summary (which recommends they are both great and to get them both as well) and judge for yourself.
Since one is buy to play and one is pay to play and the release dates are pretty far apart I am taking Totalbiscuts advice and getting both of these solid looking games.
Looking at this constant war bewteen the two games of which is better... I just cannot decide which game to pick. Money wise both will probably be about the same. TOR has $15 a month, while GW2 has B2P with a fluff shop which I will most likely get items from. That being said plus the all known expansions from Areanet will basically even out the price.
Okay so re-read this part for me please.... I will most likely purchase a couple name changes, character slots, and costumes along with other things. It would be around the same price for me.
Lets just say neither game will have DLC for the first year and that there is no such thing as tax?
So the total price for SWTOR is $180 (Monthly fee for a year) + $60 (Cost of Game) = $240
Now from GWs fluff shop (taken right from GW1 the game):
New Character Slot = $9.99 + Costume = $6.99 - $9.99 + Make Over = $9.99 + Character Name Change = $14.99 + Extra Storage = $9.00 All this = 51.95 - 54.95
So take the price of the fluff shop items (I'll use the lowwer price) plus the game itself. 51.95 + 60.00 = 111.95
But you see there is a catch with GW2, I am buying two copies of it. So 111.95 + 60.00 = 171.95
That isnt the end thou, you see the second copy is for my wife, and she will want all the fluff items too so add another 51.95 to 171.95 which is $224
It is safe to say that yes, they are around the same price for me. You see she wont be partaking in TOR because she much rather play GW2.
OK, you do make a fair point that you are clearly refering to yourself and your own spending habits; whereas all I would buy is more character slots (I want one of every profession) and maybe some extra content, depending on what it is (like GW1's Missions).
Lol I would buy more, trust me. The fluff shop is my monthly sub for GW. I'll most likely be buying two fluff items every month, one for me and the other for my wife. I am up for supporting Anet more than EA. Like I stated before I dislike EA. And the fact that I wouldn't want to pay a sub + fluff item of the month comes to play.
@dougmysticey: I have already decided to get both. And I have in fact wacthed most of his videos already.
I would never compare the lord of the rings to the recent star wars movies because thats like comparing apples to a pile of steamy shyte. But I think id get GW2 over TOR and im a big star wars geek. I think that says something because im also a big bioware supporter as well, but maybe its me and im missing something they are doing thats amazing and over my head. As far as new sci fi mmos go I'll just wait for firefall and wildstar and maybe after around year i'll pick up TOR, depending.

Sigh...this is what I meant about not getting a valid opinion here. Starry eyed GW2 rabid fans thinking GW2 will shoot rainbows out of the box and shower players in diamonds.....sigh again.
Seriously, for a valid opinion on both go watch the Cynical Brits (totalbiscut) Gamescon coverage and summary.
Both games look awesome in my opinion and as I said before and as recommended by some, get both. One is P2P and one is B2P and the release dates are far apart.

I'm a starry-eyed GW2 fan and yet I will likely buy SW:TOR and play it for 2-3 months (like I did with Rift). I've seen what SW:TOR is doing and sure it will offer an amazing levelling experience but it will wind up being the same gear grind that I've experienced in Rift and I just don't see myself being able to commit to that, without winding up burnout out after 2 or 3 months.
And there's also the fact that I just despise monthly fees and can't see myself spending that much on them.
But there's really no reason you can't play both. You pay the box price for GW2 and that's it. There's nothing in the cash shop that you need for playin the game. And the argument that GW2 will have expansions isn't really serious money-wise, because SWTOR will have expansions too.
By the time both the games have expansions, you should already know which one's worth pumping more money into.

I feel like this is Highlander, "There can be only one!" I think WoW was number one so long it infected people into believing somebody has to be number one. Hopefully, they both do well, then maybe devs can feel there are multiple choices to gaming development. I'd love to see Firefall, ArcheAge, TSW and all the other newcomers succeed on some level.
This really comes down to the same nonsense Versus talk between TOR and D3. Personally although I see GW2 just as much of an MMO as TOR there is no subscription for GW2 so even if they released on the same day I would buy both. If they both had subscriptions then I would likely choose one and play it until i decided whether I liked it or not, then buy the other if my decision was that I didn't like the first choice.
I look at GW2 as I look at single player or co-op games without subscriptions. If I buy it, play it a while and am not too keen on it then i'll probably still have had my moneys worth in entertainment value. There are very few games which i've bought and haven't derived any entertainment from whatsoever. To go and watch a movie it generally costs me a similar price to the box value.
Same way I view GW2 which is why I tend to roll my eyes when I see these GW2 vs. TOR topics, though in the op's favor it didn't seem too much of a battle as far as his post went.
I played GW1 and the truth was I really didn't like it and didn't play it beyond a month but truth be told that didn't make me feel like I wasted my money as I did play and enjoy it for a month and at the time I spent alot of time gaming so I'm sure I logged many hours in it.
When it comes to mmorpg's so many of them release in crappy states I tenmd to get a little excited just to play one that works right out of the box therefore I expect the same experience again I'll buy GW2 and maybe play it for a month but since I do respect what ANet tends to do I'll be glad to offer that little bit of support for it and who knows maybe I'll like it enough to play beyond a month but I know I'll be enjoying TOR when it releases.
+1 for truthiness (and a bonus for casting 'melancthon's hideous laughter' on a ridiculous topic)

I wasn't trying to start a fight or pick a side, just saying which has what. As I stated before I will be purchasing both.

Funny how you keep on bringing up TB when he had this to say.
I kid, I kid I know what vid you're talking about and yeah, I certainly agree that people can get both but most people won't, especially Guild Wars 2 fans that just don't buy MMOs with monthly subsciptions. Also why shouldn't I expect my box of GW2 shoot rainbows & shower me with diamonds. If the devs are able to eliminate compulsory grind then they should at least be able to do that much (or maybe just shower me with gold).
These two are very much apples and oranges. Here's my fast pros/cons on both.
GW2:
Pros
-Builds on a successful existing MMO IP
-Appears to be refining a lot of what was good in GW (skills, combat, lore), and expansing the world 1000-fold into a "real" MMO
-Impressive-sounding dynamic events
- Innovative ideas with what you equip defining skillsets, underwater-specific skills, etc.
-Bloody gorgeous-looking
-Combat looks fast and furious; actual tactical options
Cons
-Little talk of crafting so far
-Weaker emphasis on story (but in their defense, they're going against Bioware, and they DO have a focus on story. Just not as much content in that regard)
-F2P with a cash shop? Better not be P2W
-Too many new crazy ideas in one game could scare away players
-No world PVP will be a downside for some (W v W v W does not count)
-In-game housing "coming eventually"
SW: TOR
Pros
-It's Star Wars
-It's Bioware
-Great feeling of personal development as a character
-In game housing (ships) at launch; "huge" guild vessels discussed.
-Presumably HUGE world
-Interestingp PVP ideas with things like Huttball
Cons
-First MMO for this company-big risk
-Fans expecting SWG2 are really, realy going to be disappointed
-Little talk of crafting
-Personal bias: I HATE "branching" class systems (where at level x you have to decide between class 1a and 1b, etc)
-I also hate faction/race locked classes. I should be able to play any class on any race.
-Combat animations look boring. Very stiff and uninspired. No feeling of "BAM!" when someone gets hit.
-Combat...I'm sorry...looks like WoW's. 100% homogenized action bar UI. No original mechanics at all. Cover is a nice addition, but feels weak.
-Lots of talk about huge sprawling areas, haven't seen much footage yet.
-The ship combat. Really?
To be perfectly honest I'm leaning towards GW1, but I still acknowledge that the two games are difficult to compare side by side.
Sigh...this is what I meant about not getting a valid opinion here. Starry eyed GW2 rabid fans thinking GW2 will shoot rainbows out of the box and shower players in diamonds.....sigh again.

I am GW2 fan too and i have no problem with subscriptions. Would be nice if people around here stop speaking for everyone else. I know people do this to give weight to their opinion but it is silly generalisation unless one knows all the GW2 fans world wide.
I'm willing to pay $15.00/month to play SWTOR, because I think it's worth it. I cannot say the same thing about GW2. Over and over again I hear people say the number one feature attracting them to this game is it's payment model. If that's the best that the game has to offer, then that worries me. GW2 will probably be lots of fun, and you'll probably get the appropriate amount of fun for the money.

Sorry, forgot the "the" when I typed that up. Anyway, it is pretty obvious that I'm a GW2 fan and yet I paid for a month in Rift and will likely pay for another, since I'm so freakin' bored right now. When SW:TOR comes out I'll likely do the same. still doesn't stop me from hating on the archaic subsciption model, that's slowly dying out.

Don't worry, the game has a lot more things going for it than just the lack of a monthly fee. It's just that usually is the biggest barrier to entry for your typical MMO, to a potential player.
