The sad pvp fact confirmed at NYC Comicon

SirBalinSirBalin Member UncommonPosts: 1,300

I know a lot of pvpers that were really looking forward to pvp with this game, me being one.  I had the chance to speak with Ragnar 1 on 1, and found that he's a great guy with a vision.  The sad thing is, to those pvpers that are looking for open world pvp....your not in his vision.  I asked about the fact that we have three factions, so I'm assuming that means we can fight in open world when crossing factions.  The response was, "good question, while the three factions don't like one another, they understand that they need to work together to defeat the forces (npcs) and therefor there is  governing body that sets rules amongst the three factions."  He went on to say that there will be battlegrounds type of pvp, but absolutely no world pvp when I spoked to him after the panel.  I even asked about the opportunity for a pvp server where the factions could fight one another and he said it wouldn't even be considored because it doesn't fit the game.  He did say that if the communty demanded clan war deccing on the forums, then he'd considor that.

So, while a great guy...and probably a great pve game based on what I saw, if you are looking for the open world pvp, whether it be faction based on ffa, its not here.  This was such a heartbreaker for me...

while i dont need massive open world pvp, i do need some form of it. its a shame, was really looking forward to this

Sorry you're heartbroken but I'm thrilled. I hate open world PvP. I might still be playing Aion except for the annoyance of getting ganked by a toon 20 levels above me while questing. No fun imo.

At what point were you expecting this to be an open world pvp game? They said, before now, that this was not an open world PvP game. The world is PvE, where you can group with anyone, regardless of faction, and the PvP happens in the battle grounds or the open pvp zones.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

It's a RP heavy mmo (or at least that is what it appears to be to me), with emphasis on a "hidden conflict" so open world probably does not fit the game in all honesty.

Yea, as I said...I have nothing but respect for Ragnar after speakign to him...just wish we both had the same vision, lol.

I guess I look at it as three factions that don't like one another and I assumed that was the pefect setup for faction based pvp in the open world....oh well, such is life.  (As far as battlegrounds and pvp zones, thats what I mean...thats not open world pvp to me)

I find it lame as well, just saying that it is unsurprising given the game seems more RP/PVE centric. The fact that it has more than two factions does not immediately set it up as an ideal pvp candidate.

While there will be no traditional levels, there will be a progression of skills and powers. And Aion was just an example of why I don't like open world PvP, not a feature by feature comparison to TSW.

Going from memory i always thought this game was PVP arena based as in certain zones where PVP designed for combat and mini games, never thought this was world PVP based, the whole concept is PVE orientated with PVP as a secondary option.

Heh I thought they might drop the ball kind of like in AoC, but wow.. that's exactly like AoC.  and TSW falls another notch on my own personal hype meter.  It's now at: maybe I'll still play it.  depends on what else comes out around the same time- inlcuding SP games.

    When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

  • DragimDragim Member UncommonPosts: 867

So I am confused then...if there is zero world PvP, what is this MMORPG.com story about then?

    http://www.mmorpg.com/newsroom.cfm/read/22235/The-Secret-World-PvP-and-World-Domination.html#comments

Also- The excuse that "These 3 factions don't like each other but know that they need to work together...." is lame.

That is just an easy way out of the situation.

Reminds me of Warhammer Online and the excuses they gave for the factions being allied into a side versus side type thing.

So, why does every gankfester think that every MMO ever published needs to have OPEN world pvp? Some games have it, some games don't. Personally, my game-style doesn't support open world PVP so I don't play games or on servers that offer it and I've never complained. Many games that went the way of supporting griefers I stopped playing...cough...Aion...and yes, OPEN world PVP means gankers and griefers. I understand that the OP would NEVER participate in activities which ruin gameplay for another player...but many will, many can, and many do.

I've never logged into Darkfall or the COUNTLESS games that ONLY offer PVP as their gameplay.
Is it possible to leave ONE game on the market that doesn't cater to gamers who scream and cry the loudest?

If I have to explain it, you wouldn't understand.

  • RohnRohn Member UncommonPosts: 3,730

From my understanding, this was never really planned as an open-world PvP game.  Given the lore, it doesn't appear that open world killing would fit this themepark very well.

It doesn't change the fact that there would still be that significant gap if not by levels then by Skills. Unless they created some balance or fairness in Open World Pvp.

    Gah ..

Confirms my suspicions that the game's intended target groups are the more fashion and social life conscious amongst us who indeed would spend a little cash in a clothing store occasionaly to endulge themselves in toying with their character's looks.

Like GW2 then, where everyone in the open world will be your buddy. V_V

Pretty sad state of affairs that both big upcoming titles flaunting a three faction system shy away from open world pvp, without even catering for those who love it with a specific ruleset so those that abhor it can still have their merry way on pve servers.

Well, the thing is, a person who liked open world pvp wouldn't be dissuaded by this.

Open world pvp is a great feature and can really define the world and how groups interact but it's not something you can convince others to like.

People who don't like open world pvp games probably shouldn't be playign open world pvp games. It's not a bad or good features. It's just a feature.

As for this announcement it makes sense. It's not world war "whatever". There is evil afoot and it makes sense that opposing human interests would not be openly warring with each other when giant calamari is moving in at the mall.

Not that I like the game wow anymore but. I once led a 120 man raid on orgrimar in world pvp. How is that ganking?

Just like Aion refused to create a PvE server. It wasn't their vision for the game. Guess we all can't get what we want all the time.

Derp, what is lame is not letting devs design the game they way they see fit. If it's not for you, play something else. This is a story focused game, while it has PVP that's not what this game is about, if that's the story they wanted to write about their factions, with a need to work together that's they're story.

If you want open world PVP play something that has it, it would be lame to sit around moaning about a game not designed for you.

PVP servers & PVE servers; a solution that has been working wonders in catering for both kind of players for over a decade.

Which is why Anet's and now Funcom's decision to go with a single ruleset pisses me off so much.

Don't deny those who love world pvp their fun, I am not denying you your fun (on pve servers) either.

  • KelthiusKelthius Member UncommonPosts: 298

All the people saying they hate World PvP are mentioning Aion and Darkfall? One is faction vs faction the other is FFA. If anything, you would need to compare this game to DAOC in terms of World PvP. 3 Factions make a huge difference in the way it is set up. Having no World PvP is just stupid imo.
