Or you'll have people growing bored in a week or two after the honeymoon period is over when they discover that the game has no substance except the storylines.
If you make an effort and read some of the reviews you'll notice that many are written by beta testers (fanbois by definition otherwise they wouldnt apply for beta) who grew tired of the game quickly.
Personally, I expect the score to go even lower with time.
Dude, seriously, if you don't like the game, why hang out in the forums to keep trashing it? When the next game comes out, the haters here will move on to it in and vicious cycle. I've learned that you take user reviews with a grain of salt.
Easiest way to narrow down reviews to the ones I should read: ignore 1-3, ignore 9-10, and you get roughly unbiased reviews. No fanbois, no haters.
An extreme opinion is still an opinion and "fanbois" and "haters" have as much right to be heard as the "balanced" ones. In fact, I'd argue that impassioned fanbois and haters have much more weight than the "objective balanced reivewers" because they are much more vocal and influential in their immediate circles.
It's basically the same as the "vocal minority" vs "the silent majority" thing in politics. Tho a group may be small in numbers, it can be quite influential because it's loud and impassioned enough.
What I find interesting with metacritic user reviews is that here we have the clash od two "vocal majorities" with an almost non-existent "silent minority." I'm really curious how it will play out and how closely it will reflect the success of the game.
And would you feel this dismissive if the majority of those reviews were positive and praising of TOR?
I'll put $20 on "No, you wouldn't". You'd be affirming them as "valid opinions".
I'd bet a further $20 that every person in this thread slamming the negative reviews and launching ad-hominems at the reviewers for daring to not like TOR and, worse, demonstrating the unmitigated audacity to actually say so, would be praising and holding up those reviews as "proof of how awesome TOR is" if they were positive.
$100 says I would win both of those bets.
Honestly, the responses/reactions of some people in this thread are just as hysterical, biased and predictable as the most critical of those on Metacritic. It doesn't matter what they're saying, how much or how little they've played or what they do and don't like about the game. All they have to do is criticize it and that's it... they're ripped to shreds without a second thought.
Why are some of you people so absolutely engraged when someone expresses a dislike for something you enjoy? Why all the intolerance and hostility toward a differing opinion? Are some of you so insecure in your own point-of-view, that you feel you have to tar, feather and rip apart any who doesn't share it?
Seriously. They're just opinions, folks.
Yeah seriously, don't understand why people are so upset about someone else not liking the game you like. They have the right to their opinion just like you have the right to yours.
Metacritic is after all a bunch of non-professional reviews which means they are mostly subjective opinions. If you can't stand that then dont look at the site.

Absolutely I work in the games industry and I can tell you press are biased but I would also be wary of user reviews 10's and 0's on metacritic are well ridiculous and really just a rally cry or haters/fanbois. I tend to look at the poll's here on MMORPG.com more as they seem a bit more objective you still get the odd 0 and 10 but at least its more diverse in each category. Looking at the released rank now it looks about right to me.

Agree with your opinion on both the 10's and 0's. And yeah it does seem to balance out into a somewhat fair rating for the game. I would say 6-7
I skipped it. Because of money and because I don't love those movies the way some other people do. I am looking for a fantasy mmo to play with my wife like GW2 because even though it may not be the experience that the first months of lotro was, it will be cheap. Right now we are enjoying Borderlands, because we are not fps players. If we were it might seem too easy. Fantasy with greens and blues are where our hearts are though. Too much brown and gray and we don't like it as much.
5.5 user score on metacritic says to me that combined with me not really liking star wars maybe I made the right decision to skip it. I mainly just play Titan Quest and Borderlands anyway for relaxation, but I did enjoy that rush in Warhammer battlegrounds of always moving while dps'ing on the run. When it gets to the point where you are just pre-macroing everything in then where is the game though? Too competitive and there is no fun left.
What we shoudl all do just to piss off people that want to incite such a thing is go and vote one way till the score is perfectly even, and then keep t that way constantly. Everytime someone votes too far one or the other vote it back. it would piss so many off.

Its what I've been saying in this thread.
The problem is that no big site will give a title like TOR anything worse than a 7 and that would already be pushing it, no matter what the reviewer actually thought.
Why?
Because:
A. Having a good relationship with the pub/dev is crucial to survive in the future and get those sweet beta impressions and exclusives
B. the pub/dev is too much a heavy-weight to ignore the track-record and its fanbase
C. Its a big IP loved by many (if you alienate too many people you loose revenue on your site)
The only way a site will put up a review of SWTOR that is below 7 is either
A. nerdbaiting
B. obscure site nobody ever heard of, or local magazine with no influence whatsoever.
Half the reviews for big titles, by big devs, -never- ever EVER deserved the scores they got (exceptions do occur, but rarely).
Please GTA4 was a great game, but a 10/10 is fucking insane.
I was just looking at the user reviews for SWG. It made me laugh. 5.5 same as SWTOR and only 6 of the reviews came after NGE and 4 of the 6 that came after were higher than 5 so they brought the average up. So maybe the user reviews aren't all that messed up.
Yeasayers are busy playing. Haters are on here crafting fanciful tales of how they could do better. Funny they never do - they just log on here to bitch and whine.
The yesayers just say "game is awesome and so fun"
The naysayers argument with dozens of undeniable truths.

what does that tell you.
since when did "this game blows, its not a sandbox" and outright lies get considered undeniable truths?
the haters are in pure denial mode lately.
We must be reading different things...
I'm still enjoying the game, but the more I play, the more I find wrong with it.
I did some PvPing yesterday and god...there is so much wrong with that.
You can't pick which map to queue for. The matches aren't tiered at all so higher level players have a huge advantage from the skills they have that you don't. And worst of all, you can't even pull up the scoreboard (damage, heals, etc.) during the match! I mean, seriously, WTF!
That word. I don't think it means what you think it means.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
Oh hell, don't blame us please. Most of us are hoping that SWTOR will be great enough that people will finally shut up about it because they are too busy playing.
The fact that you guys are so defensive about a game that isn't in beta yet is an unending source of amusement.
WoW2 is going to be the best game ever, amirite?
The best part is how hypocritical they are and don't even realize it. Reather amusing really.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.
i think i was overly hard on the game in terms of my personal opinion.
i will just say personally, i find it lacking in every aspect. I feel like it's a single player rpg. I know swtor focused on the the story. To be honest , the game really is around a 7. It has a great story, and for what the game is, it is above average.
this game is a hold your hand , linear game. I remember when episodes 1,2,3 came out, i had the same frustration. I grew up on star wars and was hugely put off by the new ones. Lucas was skipping the older generation and trying to get the younger crowd with "jarjar" etc.
i think that swtor is a game reaching out to the younger crows. Us older gamers, want a challenge, a social community, crafting, more of a "thinking" game. More of a "sandbox". Bioware specifically stated that it would never be a sandbox. I blame myself for expecting this to be a "grown up" game. It's appeal is to the younger star wars fans, and the younger crowd in general. Not saying older gamers will not like this, just this older gamer.

So I can choose to trust an average based on the subjective opinion of hundreds of people - or those that are influenced by money and professional relations with the game creators (professional reviews).
I'll take the user reviews thanks - case in point Dragon Age 2.
clearly if a site likes a game you dont they were paid off, theres no other explanation since its impossible anyone actually likes those games.
That goes both ways. A site that doesn't like a game you like is obviously a hate-review because its impossible that someone might not like those games, right?
Get real.
It's not that the sites are paid off. It's that the site's views can be influenced by advertising dollars. User reviews are likely more honest, even if they are more extreme in their ratings.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
I think I saw some outlet giving games 11/10 ????
WTF.
I was just looking at the user reviews for SWG. It made me laugh. 5.5 same as SWTOR and only 6 of the reviews came after NGE and 4 of the 6 that came after were higher than 5 so they brought the average up. So maybe the user reviews aren't all that messed up.
The yesayers just say "game is awesome and so fun"
The naysayers argument with dozens of undeniable truths.
---
what does that tell you.
the best blog of the net
since when did "this game blows, its not a sandbox" and outright lies get considered undeniable truths?
the haters are in pure denial mode lately.
Apparently stating the truth in my sig is "trolling"
Sig typo fixed thanks to an observant stragen001.
Are you team Azeroth, team Tyria, or team Jacob?
"Undeniable!"
That word. I don't think it means what you think it means.
Self-pity imprisons us in the walls of our own self-absorption. The whole world shrinks down to the size of our problem, and the more we dwell on it, the smaller we are and the larger the problem seems to grow.
