Only on mmorpg.com is the fastest selling MMO in history considered a failure.
Well not really, that has been fastest selling MMOs before that have failed, only to get beaten by the next fastest selling MMO in history to fail, so it's like a pattern.
It [might] be broken by this fastest selling MMO in history instead of the others ones, time will tell.
There are other forums that consider it a failure but it's forums you know?

so you consider episode I of star wars the best of the series since it was the fastest grossing film of them all? amazing what corporate marketing can do

You gatta take inflation into account. I mean Harry Potter has passed Star Wars in total gross, but that doesn't change the fact the Star Wars franchise has sold twice as many tickets as Harry Potter has.

Couldn't agree more! MMORPG.org is a weird bunch that make up a small demographic. My non-gaming girlfriend has heard of WoW and SW:TOR but has no idea what guild wars is. I think she is a better representation of what people want/know as opposed to the group of people here.

well you can actually look at boxofficemojo and they show inflation adjusted numbers.. BUT you can just look at episode 2 and see it declined a lot from episode I after all the hate feedback from episode I then after all the great marketing done to promote episode 3 it did a little better than 2 but not as good as one. Either way it just another example something doesn't need to be "good or great" to sell big.. you really just need good marketing or a good IP or even better both:P

Nope ..... but I consider it to be better than Starship Troopers 3 . Since it was faster grossing than that one also.

There is a goood bit of truth in that. I keep seeing "Guild Wars 2, Guild Wars 2" on these boards but no average person that I have spoken with about games has heard of it.
wow? yes. Star Wars? yes.
Not that they play any of these things but they are more in the consciousness of average people than most of the games talked about here.

you really wonder why? it's really not that hard of a concept well for one guild wars 2 isn't even released, two star wars is the biggest IP you could ask for , for a MMO. And last but of course not least advertising.

But even after other games are released they aren't going to have much effect on the average person. They just don't care. And as you say, Star Wars is an IP that people know. WoW has its own thing going for it and is very much its "own thing".
I can easily see non-gamers playing wow and swtor over other games.

I can't see how people wouldn't think a game with the name star wars made from bioware would sell anything less.. For me I thought it would sell close to 4-5 million boxes on its first month.. but I also feel in the coming months server merges are innevitable.
Like Lord of the Rings Online should have? Like Dungeons and Dragons should have? Like Warhammer should have? Need I go on?
Point I'm trying to make is close to 90% of gamers don't like to pay subscription fees for anything other than their xbox/playstation fees.
So you can't compare an MMO sales to a non-MMO sales, ever (an exception can be made for WoW, possibly.)
The Old Republic has sold more games in such a short time than any other MMO ever (I'm not including WoW expansions here.)
So yes, the game is a massive success, and has done wonderful things for the MMO genre.
not to mention the wonders it may do for single player RPGs. Perhaps, soon we wont get any single player RPGs anymore unless they have the MMO tag attached and we have to pay $15 for a basic RPG with some co-op features. dont forget about that wonderful thing as well.
I don't wonder why and I would think that much of what you say has truth in it.

wow has more than its "own thing" it has insane amount of advertising.. i mean cmon you seen the comericals they got the osbournes, Mr T even chuck freakin norris doing commericals. Not to mention its been around forever now. As for people not caring these are the same people who play these games for a few months max and quit. The general population of MMOers who play these games for years sure as hell know of GW2
with the MMO market as large as it is today and with how long its been since the last AAA title and not to mention the super team of bioware + star wars I can't see how anyone would think this game wouldn't sell well off the get go.. does it make it a good game? or a rousing success? i don't think so if it can maintain 1 mill+ subs over the course of a year i'd say its a sure fire hit but i highly doubt it will keep anywhere close to that in a years time.
You don't think The Old Republic will keep close to 1 million subscribers? I can't even begin to imagine how you came to that conclusion.
I predict that after a year The Old Republic will have 1million to 2million active subscribers, easy.
I don't know how people are preicting lower than 1million? Let alone you predicting "anywhere close" to 1million.
With patches, more advertising, free trials and cheaper boxes this game will continue to thrieve for the next year atleast easily.
Anything could happen..but I see this as a very probable future for SWTOR as well. Especially as they do additional fixes...patches..polish and add more content...making it attractive to more people and hopefully drawing back some disgruntled defectors.lol.
only on MMORPG.com and with the "super SWTOR hater club" would 2 million copies sold NOT be a successful launch.
2 million copies of the game sold and 2 million active subscriptions (after the 30 days free) are two different things. Selling 2 million copies and only ending up with a mil or so subs does not make for a successful game. The launch was good, one of the best i took part in. But the game overall, will not keep those 2 mil people. And you can see all the TOR lovers keep using this as an example why their game is so awesome because they dont have anything else to use And within a month or 2, they wont have that 1.7 mil subs either.
I don't wonder why and I would think that much of what you say has truth in it.

It's not just about advertising. WoW generated it's own momentumand the sales were helped with advertising. Players always say "advertise, advertise". Well, pick your favorite niche game and advertise the heck out of it and what you will get in the long run is a waste of money.
Advertising is good about placing something in the consciouness of the average person. The people who are actively seeking this type of entertainment, in any genre, already know about this stuff, are already talking about it.
But advertise something to the masses about something that has niche appeal and you aren't going to convince them to play it.
And when I say "it's own thing" that's a pretty big meat ball. It's about everything that contributed to the juggernaut that it is. Advertising is certianly part of that but if Wow was about full loot, ffa pvp, harsh death penalties, most of the people playing it wouldn't be playing it.
And yes, "the general mmo'er who play mmo's know about gw2".
And who are they? Well, they are a smaller group of people than know about games such as WoW. Mmo's aren't as widely talked about and purchased as you might think. Not when compared to the average person.
Heck, for the first time in my life I am actually working a an office with some gamers. How many of them play mmo's? Two. One plays WoW, one plays lotro and none of them know anyting about any of the games we talk about on this site. Oh and Star Wars though only one played it in beta.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."

Should make for some good bouts I suppose.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

and by then several new AAA mmo's will be released or just about to be released... like wow before it SWTOR came out at a prestine time when no other MMOs had been released recently. Only Rift was released in the same year and that was way back in March. Not to mention it was released right near christmas. You really think both these things are coincidence? I bet you the developers would of prefered to polish the game and work on a summer 2012 release but with everything in the works for then I'm sure the corporate guys pushed for the christmas 2011 release.. it's all about the money..

fans of SWTOR posting on a SWTOR ... say it aint so, its a miracle.
at least fanboys posting about how much they love SWTOR makes sense. unlike people who don't play or don't like the game constantly posting how they hate the game instead of getting over it and moving on to a game they are a fanboy of.
like for example lets take someone who is rational and has common sense (Me) i use to post on the rift forums when i was playing the game. I got bored of it and quit ... i quit posting on the forum(maybe I will post on a Rift new story here and there) .. I mean i know its a crazy concept but I don't see the point of posting on a forum of a game that someone obviously doesn't like.

general MMOers is a smaller group but they are also the group who pays and plays for years.. I don't agree when you say if you advertise to the masses you aren't going to convince them to play. It does exactly that, thats what marketing is all about thats why companies pay big bucks for this stuff, thats why sites like this one stay afloat and sites like IGN and gamespot. Advertising is what gets the idea of a game in peoples heads which in turns increases interest which in turns makes sales. All you need to sell something is good advertising. But having a famous IP is just the icing on the cake.
WOW is a whole other monster though because of the time it came out specifically. MMOs were a very small community back then and it was the first real themepark made for the masses.

2 million copies sold is successful. if they retain 1 million it would be the second highest populated MMO in the west. I know those lacking common sense think a new MMO should get 10 million boxes sold and retain ALL 10 million of those subscribers = FAILURE.
fans of SWTOR posting on a SWTOR ... say it aint so, its a miracle.

and is it a crazy concept to think there is nothing else out there to play right now? there's so many reason people post dislike for a game and they have already been discussed many times. But honestly I see it as even more odd for people to sit around in the forums and defend a game other than play it if they are so happy with it.
like for example lets take someone who is rational and has common sense (Me) i use to post on the rift forums when i was playing the game. Why? I don't usually do it either when I'm done with a game unless I'm taking a break but that is my take on it. So what if they do? What makes their opinions or ideas any less worthwhile than those that do or did enjoy the game?
I really don't see what the big deal is or why some take it so personally. Many of these supposed "haters" actually being up some very good points or ideas. Some of which could possibly still make it into this game at a future date.
Not to mention besides those simply on Cloud 9, frankly I find their ability to counteract those saying everything is perfection or defend every single little thing in or going with this game rather refreshing myself.
Well...that and how riled up they get some.
XD

so in your example warhammer online was a very successfull game since it sold plenty of copies to make up for what it cost to make.

Considering that would put TOR at numbers surpassed only by WoW, I'd call that a pretty damn big success.

I know those lacking common sense think a new MMO should get 10 million boxes sold and retain ALL 10 million of those subscribers = FAILURE.
but thats not how this genre works.
and is it a crazy concept to think there is nothing else out there to play right now? there's so many reason people post dislike for a game and they have already been discussed many times. But honestly I see it as even more odd for people to sit around in the forums and defend a game other than play it if they are so happy with it.
